Jul 28 2014 Black Holes And Gaping Mouths

Hare KrishnaBy Kesava Krsna Dasa

The famed Time Machine is now a serious inevitability, according to many. One scientist says that he wants to go back to the past to see his deceased father and possibly help him with present-day medicine. If Krishna says that He is Time and is the destroyer of all things, including our karma, then what type of power or technology can oppose this? Going back into the past means to undo karma and to undo history.

Hare KrishnaBy the GBC Executive Committee

On behalf of the Governing Body Commission of ISKCON, please accept our prayers to Lord Krishna for your protection, as well as our deepest affection and concern for your well being. We are following the events in Ukraine in the media with heavy hearts. We have heard directly from Niranjana Maharaja about some of the great challenges, dangers and threats that you have undergone. By the Lord's mercy many of you have survived close encounters with bomb blasts, militia attacks, and other terrible effects of living with war at your doorsteps. We know that the leaders of ISKCON in Ukraine are doing all that they can to assist you and to offer you spiritual guidance in this difficult time. Many of you have relocated, and have had to leave behind your homes, jobs and temple communities.

Jun 29 2014 My First Puri Rathayatra

By Deena Bandhu dasa

The next day was Gundicha Marjana. Many times I have cleaned the temple from top to bottom in whatever temple I was in. But today we all went to do Gundicha Marjana at the very site where Lord Chaitanya had personally done it five hundred years before. We were all very excited. Unfortunately, they don't allow foreigners inside. So I told Bhadra Charu Prabhu, a very nice devotee who was in charge, to get me a couple of baskets so we could at least clean the front entrance. All around the entrance they were selling brooms and clay pots, but no baskets. But somehow he got a couple.

Jun 28 2014 The Chorus Of One-siders

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

It is known that Srila Prabhupada was not fond of ambiguities like “maybe, perhaps, could be…” and so on, and we often follow suit to express ourselves in absolutist terms, convinced of our infallible statements. The problem with this is that in the face of Srila Prabhupada’s varied and nuanced teachings our utmost one-sided certainties can expose us as certain and total fools who actually expose our political and biased natures.

Jun 25 2014 Japa Affirmations

By Mahatma das

I happily and enthusiastically welcome the holy names every japa session. I easily chant my prescribed number of rounds with focus and attention. When I chant, I chant. I get to chant, I want to chant, and I love to chant. I treat the maha-mantra as Radha and Krsna, fully present in sound. I receive and feel Krsna's presence, mercy and love in His holy names. I chant in full awareness that the holy name is my greatest treasure.

Jun 17 2014 ‘Whose Fault is Divorce?’: Mahatma Prabhu’s Response to Bhakti Vikasa Swami, Part 2

By Mahatma das

Prabhupada says that generally divorce is the woman's fault. Chastity is one of a woman's most important virtues, so husband and wife should not divorce. The premise of my article ‘Husband as Guru’ was that men are rarely entirely innocent. Some said this contradicts Prabhupada. I still stand by my statement. Yet, I do not agree I have contradicted Prabhupada, for by saying "generally," Prabhupada doesn't deny that men can have their share of responsibility in a divorce.

Jun 17 2014 ” Is Self Compassion Bonafide”

By Mahatma das

The Nectar of Devotion asks us to be patient, or dhairyat (verse 3). And Prabhupada talks much about the necessity of patience to be successful. Who must we be patient with? This verse is referring to being patient with ourselves. Why? Because we often fail, and if we give up, we lose. Prabhupada said that if we lose enthusiasm, everything is finished. So self-hate can cause one to lose patience with oneself and thus feel like giving up. We need to patience with ourselves to remain encouraged to go on enthusiastically with our bhakti. Sometimes devotees lack enough self-forgiveness to have the patience needed to progress well in devotional service.

So I am glad to have raised a few eyebrows and that I thus received the opportunity to address, in depth, the roles of men and women and their effects on marriage.

Jun 1 2014 Serving Krishna With Sleep Deprivation

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

How can we practice Krishna consciousness properly if, each time we pick up a book to read, we nod off after a few minutes? How are we going to be freed from offences if we sleep during chanting of japa? How are we going to hear realised insights from speakers and learn if we perform artificial meditation (sleep) during class? Being amongst the devotees and wanting to please and impress with our selfless services, it will be a climb-down of sorts if we have to withdraw for some sleep. Yes, it is ignorance, but it is better than ignorant devotion. We need to be honest with ourselves.

May 18 2014 Should Women be Called “Prabhu”, “Mataji”, or “Devi”?

Whereas in ISKCON men had generally been taught to see all women other than their wives as mother; Whereas in more recent times a practice has gained momentum that women should not be called "Mataji," but "Prabhu;" Whereas the word "Prabhu" is traditionally used to address men; Whereas one section of ISKCON considers addressing women as "Prabhu" to have no cultural or linguistic backing, or any evidentiary or experiential support from Srila Prabhupada's teachings; Whereas another section of ISKCON cites conversational or correspondence-based evidence that Srila Prabhupada addressed female disciples as "Prabhu;" Whereas there is increasing discord among the proponents of these two opinions; Whereas all initiated women also have the title "Devi" as part of their spiritual name, an address that could also apply to the non-initiated

May 11 2014 The Hare Krsna Maha-mantra Should be the Primary Mantra in all ISKCON Kirtans

By the Governing Body Commission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

“In our temple, strictly Hare Krishna chanting should be given more importance. There is no harm in this mantra you have heard, but it is not very important. There are many such common songs composed by common devotees out of sentiment. But our principle is to stick to the authorities, and always remember that Hare Krishna is the prime authorized mantra.” (Letter to Malati Dasi, 28 January 1969); Note: This is for kirtans, but does not apply to bhajans such as Jaya Radha Madhava, Nrsimha prayers, etc.

May 4 2014 Resting The Jiva-Fall / No-Fall Case

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

Is this a daring and overconfident claim? It seems to be an assertion of finality on the fall / no-fall issue. Does this risk jumping over Srila Prabhupada and our previous acaryas? The discussions on this matter continue to produce no outright winners of the debate. Such finality may ‘bore’ the philosopher within us, but we cannot deny its profoundness. Who does not want to know their true origin? Ancestry firms help people trace their family lineage and possible place of origin through birth-given names. By providing one’s DNA sample one might learn of more interesting information involving genetic links to ancestors going back thousands of years. We can be forgiven if this natural curiosity spills over onto the spiritual frontier.

People of Spanish decent are generally quite pious, as Srila Prabhupada noted when he visited Mexico and Venezuela. Cubans are no exception. Some very nice devotees in Miami are Cuban.

Apr 28 2014 A Little Background to Guideline 315: Chanting of the Holy Names of Srimati Radharani

By Praghosa dasa

"So our request is. Everyone who is present here. Today is Radhastami. So pray to Radharani. And She is hare, hara. This hare, this word, is Radharani. Hara, Radharani. Radha or hara the same thing. So Hare Krsna. So we are praying to Radharani, "My Mother, Radharani, and Krsna." Hare Krsna. "O Krsna, O the Lord." Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, the same thing, repetition. "O Radharani, O Krsna." "O Radha-Krsna." "Radhe-Krsna" or "Hare Krsna," the same thing. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare. Again addressing, "O Krsna, O Krsna, O Radharani." Hare Rama. The same thing, again. Hare Rama. Rama is also Krsna. Rama is Rama, Rama is Balarama. They are all Krsna. Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. So this repetition of addressing Radha and Krsna or Hare Krsna is to pray, "My dear Lord, the, and the energy, the spiritual energy of the Lord, kindly engage me in Your service." That's all. "I am now embarrassed with this material service. Please engage me in Your service."

Apr 21 2014 Seed Of Frustration

By Srila Prabhupada

So therefore the real thing is that everything belongs to Krsna. We are artificially enjoying the stolen property. Therefore if you go on enjoying like that, then this frustration will come. But before coming to that frustration, if we return this property to Krsna, then we become happy. So best thing is to return everything to Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness. And you will not be a loser. You will be gainer, just like Bali Maharaja. Actually, if you think, everything belongs to Krsna. Nothing belongs to you. This is maya. Krsna's property you are thinking, "mine."

Apr 16 2014 Surrender

By Srila Prabhupada

If I am thinking, "I am suffering," it is also Krsna's grace. We should take like that. Even in my consideration, I am in a position which is apparently suffering, we must accept as Krsna's grace: "All right, I have surrendered to Krsna. If Krsna is giving me suffering, that's all right." That is surrender. "Oh, I have surrendered to Krsna, and now Krsna is giving me suffering? Oh, leave Krsna consciousness." That is not surrender. Surrender means in any condition you'll remain surrendered.

Apr 15 2014 Real Self or Iskcon Self

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

For instance, a ‘strict’ brahmacari gets into managerial positions and manages for the betterment of ISKCON, but in doing so also polarises a number of devotees and congregation members with his ‘take-it-or-leave-it approach. Later, the brahmacari is awarded the sannyasa order. At his sannyasa ceremony, he apologises for any hurt he might have caused. Would that apology be an institutional apology or a self-apology? It is an institutional apology. Are we to expect that this type of apology will absolve him of all offences committed on a personal self-level? In the meantime he might feel safe knowing he is ‘exonerated’, but Vaisnava realisations teach us that the offences will remain until they are forgiven on a person-to-person self-level.

So this is also going to their credit. When they offer their respect to a Vaisnava, that goes to their credit. When one comes in this temple, offers his obeisances, it goes to their credit.
