Shyamasundara Dasa: Dear Vaisnavas,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Considering that almost daily we are reading about the passing of some exalted Vaisnavas and that this trend will only continue, I thought it might be wise to publish the Antyesti Samskara — the Vedic funeral rights — as transmitted by Srila Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, so that devotees would know what to do in such inevitable circumstances.

Attached is a copy of Gopala Bhatta Gosvami’s directions on how to perform Antyesti Samskara in PDF format.

Thanks for posting this useful information. However it is misleading to say that it is presented from Sat Kriya Sar Dipika attributed to Gopal Bhatta Goswami. The document itself clearly explains that it is not. Actually the Gaudiya Maths have printed books on Vaisnava sraddha (which is mentioned in Hari Bhakti Vilasa) and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati re-instituted the performance of sraddha rites by his devotees according to those procedures.

I didn’t say it was from Sat-kriya-sara-dipika, I also read the introduction which said that Gopala Bhatta Gosvami didn’t include it in that text because it is customary in most sampradaya’s not to include Antyesti Samskara along with other samskaras.

This text is based on elements of Gopala Bhatta’s Samskara-dipika that would be applicable to non-sannyasis along with common funeral practices mentioned in the sastras compiled by Srila Kesava Maharaja, disciple of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.
