MUKTA KESA PRABHU DEPARTS

Monday, 09 April 2007 / Published in Announcements, In Memoriam / 6,659 views

By Lokavarnotamma Dasa

On Friday night at 9:36PM, my twin brother, our beloved Godbrother and most cherished friend, Mukta Kesa dasa prabhu (pictured with son, Chediraja in 1986) , left this world. Mukta was surrounded by no less than thirty Godbrothers and Godsisters, who chanted the holy name in loving ecstasy bidding him a safe journey to his next destination. His dear friend Varsana Swami was in attendance, and he frequently spoke to all of us, providing us with the most beautiful Krsna conscious perspective to what we witnessed. Mukta was loved by all. His personality and association was so humerous and unique.

He joined our Hare Krsna movement in 1969. He was a samkirtan devotee for so many years, and was a devotee member of our movement when we were indeed still a very small family. For the last few years, Mukta worked tirelessly sending out Srila Prabhupada’s books and personal letters to inmates, encouraging them to take shelter in Krsna consciousness.

The vacuum devotees in New Vrndavana and throughout the world are feeling in Mukta’s absence is devastating. We pray that he has rejoined Srila Prabhupada and other Godbrothers, who have left previously.. to continue chanting and dancing and taking part in Lord Caitanya’s samkirtan movement somewhere in the universe.

Hari Bol Mukta Kesa Prabhu. We will always feel your separation.

I have fond memories of sitting an talking with Mukta Kesa Prabhu in his office in New Vrndaban during the last Festival of Inspiration. He was so friendly, and at the same time serious, especially regarding his service in the prison minisrty. We will be missing you there this year Mukta. Please put in a good word for us with Srila Prabhupada.

    Dear Lokavarnotamma Prabhu.

Please, accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I have heard the recent news of the passing away of your loved twin brother,
Mukta Kesa Prabhu. Rest assured that Krishnna took care of him. Lord Krishna
promisses that his devotees never perish. Muktakesa Prabhu was so devoted to
Prabhupada and his mission, there is no way that he did not get a wonderfull
destiny. I am praying for his wellbeing, as well as yours.

    Sincerely yours,

and Krsna thought now my lela’s drawing to a close, What about the
Yadava’s. They too must return with me.
Arjuna wondered what happens to the yogi who may not reach
perfection. Krsna explained in takes birth in comfortable jewish
dentists family with a devoted brother. After realizing the emptiness
of the material world he finds himself endlessly attracted to the
sadhus. Hearing the message of the pure devotee, Srila Prabhupada he
spends the greater part of his life in serving the mission of the guru.
I have known Muktakesa since I have been 16 years old. Working a job
in downtown Buffalo I would look forward to my afternoon breaks, to
go out on Main street, listen to the Hari Nam and get prasadam from
the devotees. It was probably six months later riding home the #8
Main Street bus on some cold rainy early spring Buffalo afternoon.
The bus was half full. A few stops after I got on I recognize a
familiar face get on the bus in civilian costume. Looking a little
tired, book bag hanging off his shoulder I watched as this devotee
dutifully approach the passengers with books and magazines. Finally
reaching the back of the bus he sat down next to me and shared the
great gift of Sri Isopanisad. I already had a hard back Gita I had
gotten from his brother Loka six months earlier at the Allentown art
festival. I took another book and relished the exchange of love and
    this guy’s commitment .
Nine months later after moving into the Buffalo temple this special
devotee would be wearing my socks and using my towel without even
asking. Usually cause he needed to do that so, he could get out on
    sankirtan.
That is Muktakesa, someone whose foremost and constant concern,
through all the distractions and upheavals we a meet in life, was
trying to help Srila Prabhupada in his mission. It seems a life well
lived. When ever I think of Muktakesa, I think of someone whose
major activity in this life was, to help Srila Prabhupada spread the
    mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Loka, you are sweet brother and I am happy to know you. I relished
deeply your messages on the chakra site. I was happy to have an
opportunity to remember two very special friends and god brothers. I
only hope to catch up to Mukta, in my desire to love Krsna.

MUKTAKESA PRABHU THE SANKIRTAN WARRIOR-BY HARI DASA
    ——————————————————————————————
It has been 2 days since the passing of HG Muktakesa prabhu. I only
knew him for about a year but I saw a lot of him during my daily existance
    at New Vrindaban.
He engaged me in a few services for the Prison Ministry he was running
as well as a few personal errands. It was to my misfortune that I did not
take more advantage of his association while it was available. Like
everything else a conditioned neophyte devotee does, I took his assoc-
iation for granted. It is only in his leaving us and my meditating in retrospect
that I can appreciate his true glories which are many.

Muktakesa Prabhu was one of the very few devotees that were guaranteed
to be at Mangala Arotik day after day, week after week. After some time, my
attendance slackened due to ill heath. Mukta prabhu was the only one (apart
from my wife) who made an issue of this. Indeed , many times I would hear
him chastise many devotees who were not attending the morning programme.
After all, he was there. You could see, or should I say hear Mukta prabhu
chanting his rounds dutifully day in and day out. His sadhana was exemplerary.

During the day, you could see Mukta prabhu’s office door wide open and inside
you would hear the keyboard of his computer as he passionatly wrote countless
letters to the 500+ prisoners he was ministering to. 500 people is a lot of people!
To those 500+ he was like a siksa guru, a guide, a friend and most of all, a
sincere link to Srila Prabhupada and Iskcon. 7 days a week, Mukta prabhu
would write letters and mail out hundreds of books and BTG’s to these fortunate
souls locked up in prison and he would shed light where there would be the
darkest of darkness. Mukta Prabhu would give these prisoners hope.

He had many prisoners chanting and studying Srila Prabhupadas books as well
as those of Satsvarupa Maharaja and Bhakti tirtha Swami. This is no mean feat,
it is remarkable and glorious. To be able to convince someone in a most degraded
position of Krsna consciousness is a sign of being empowered by Lord Nityananda
    Himself, Mukta prabhu
was tireless , enthusiastic and did his service with full conviction.

Indeed, in most encounters I had with Mukta prabhu, 2 things were prominent:

1)The sheer importance of 16 rounds and good morning programme attendance

    2)Preaching, in particular book distribution

What is outstanding is that these 2 items are the most primary expectations given
by Srila Prabhupada for all Iskcon members, Mukta prabhu indeed practiced
    what he preached.

Muktakesa prabhu was also very respectful to all his sanyassi godbrothers, in fact
he was never disrespectful to any devotee. He was only full of praise, if he
spoke intensly about someone, it was only because he was concerned with the
deviation. A few times he was intense with me and it was very hard to deal with,
but I can see that these were very important instructions and observations.
I beg Mukta prabhus forgiveness for not appreciating his concern and taking it
    the wrong way.

I could see that his health was breaking down rapidly and his admission into
intensive care was somewhat of a shock and then next thing we knew, he was
brain dead and then he departed. All in a matter of a few weeks. I did not know
how to take this but as he was leaving his body he was surrounded by 20 devotees
who were there giving him the support and love to assist with the departure by
chanting the Lords holy names. It is clear to me that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was
reciprocating with his dear servant by sending so many wonderful devotees from
all age groups to help him leave in a most auspicious way.

Sastra says that one must leave the body in a holy dhama. Some take this to the
extreme and say that you must travel to India and leave there despite your
condition. However, in many cases we see that this is not possible or practical.
Sometimes, devotees will leave in their Prabhu datta desha and we have recently
seen wonderfully auspicious departures in places such as Gita Nagari in America and
    New Vraja Dhama in Hungary.
Now Muktakesha prabhu has shown us that the love devotees have for one another
will transform even a nasty place such as a hospital into Vrindaban! There was
talk of bringing Mukta prabhu to New Vrindaban to leave but this was not practical,
therefore by the mercy of Mahaprabhu and the vaisnavas-New Vrindaban came
    to him!

Therefore, it is most fitting to conclude by saying that in living and dying-Muktakesa
prabhu has set a wonderful example for us all. May he always be remembered by
    sincere and loving devotees.

Mukakesa prabhu the sankirtan warrior ki jaya!

Radhanath Swami called my from India this morning. I gave him as many details that I could regarding Mukta’s departure. He wished for me to express to you his sincere feelings of sorrow at Muktakesh’s departure and his deep support for both of you. He glorified Mukta as someone who didn’t give up the struggle for Krishna Conciousness. In spite of difficulty due to previous conditioning, he always kept trying. He called him an integral part of NV. Someone who was deeply attached to chanting the Holy Name, to Srila Prabhupada, and the devotees. His kindness towards devotees was exceptional ( many of us have commented on this point).

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist at this time. I return Monday evening and will be with you Tuesday.

    AGTSP PAMHO
Dear Loka, Obeisances. You are lucky to have had a brother like Mukta, and he lucky to have a brother like you. Who knows how many lifetimes you have been together-the important fact is that you both became devotees in this lifetime and helped each other on the path back home- back to Godhead. The sorrow has to be there after so many years of close and intimate Krishna Conscious ssociation. Also, there has to be joy in knowing that you did the job well of caring for him right up until the last moment. You made sure he had devotees by his bedside, and saw how all the devotees were caring for him and praying for Krishna’s will to be done. He is blissful now, unencumbered by a gross physical body-how fortunate for him not to have to endure all the pains of old age. As for all that will so dearly miss him…I remember when Sunita (Tosan KRishna’s wife) left her body. Tosan’s son, Navine, who must have been six or seven said to me, “Everyone is saying what a great devotee my mom was and how she went back to Godhead. I just want to become a good devotee like her and go back to Godhead, too.” So there you have it. In order for us to return and associate with the great souls we need to continue on the path increasing our bhakti. All Glories to the All Auspicious Path of Bhakti where there is no loss or diminution-due to Gaura Nitai’s mercy-just advancement on the path of pure devotional service.

    All glories to Muktakesa Prabhu,

I was moved to hear the departure of H.G. Muktakesa Prabhu on phone. Srila Prabhupada will be proud of such a disciple, who was sincere and had a high caliber, distributing Srila Prabhupada books.

I will always miss the loud chanting of Hare Krishna mantra and loud calling of “shyam pandey” from next door office.

Such devotee should be glorified for his devotional activities. May Sri Sri Radha Vrindabanchandra engage him eternally at their lotus feet.

    Loka,
Please accept my humble obeisances. I’m sorry we did not get the chance to talk at the hospital. Mukta’s son said there would be a festival at NV in a month for Mukta, I will be saving to come for it. I want you to know that sometimes I thought Mukta a pain.. However he was my best friend and Teacher who cared more for me than my own parents. He cared not only for my physical well being but for my spirit soul. He will be with me the rest of my days, and there will not be a day that I chant my rounds I do not think of him. I want you to know I have been married twice yet did not know love like the love I had for Mukta. I know there will always be someone to help me fight Maya, but never in the way he did. Sometimes he treated me like I was his child and although Krishna is my father her on earth Mukta filled this position well. I know that life in its self is a lesson but I learned more in the short time I knew him than in the 40 yrs preceding. I do feel privileged to have known and had the association of such a great Vaisnava as Mukta Kesa Das. I will pursue Krishna and I hope someday to be learned enough to take it to the next level. I know that it was Krishna that made arraingement for our meeting the way we did. I only hope that I can be the devotee that Mukta tried so hard for me to be.
Please keep in touch I can always ues a little kick in the butt to keep me on the right track. Also you should know if you ever visit the Detroit temple you have a place to stay.

Of course, while we understand that for a Vaisnava one’s departure is glorious, still we experience the sadness and loss of a beloved god-brother, what to speak of one’s actual brother.

I didn’t know Mukta Kesa well, but did have the opportunity to speak with him a few times in New Vrndavana. He was a very sincere, very blissful, and very enlivened devotee. It seems that he left his body in the most auspicious circumstances, surrounded by the Holy Name. I am sure that Srila Prabhupada wiill give him His full mercy and take him back to Krsna.

    PAMHO AGTHDGSP!
The day before Mukta left us for Krsna I thought he was going to be disconnected so I had a Kirtan next to Srila Prabhupada in the temple room for two hours. It seemed like fifteen minutes.I experienced myself being in his room and moved the sheets off his feet so I could place my head there. The dust of the Vaisnava’s feet are my six kinds of foodstuffs.Mukta was a real Vaisnava because he did Krsna’s work here, delivering the forgetful souls.Krsna says no one can be more dear to him!Material inebrities are overlooked when one’s heart is full of compassion for others.Love conquers reason when it it comes to evaluating a devotees record for determining their next destination.Pock marks on the moon do not inhibit its shining.I never doubted his glory and was saddened to see others judgements of him

I also took his hand and placed it on my heart and took mine and placed it on his. These things happened spontaneously and demonstrate our eternal connection in service to Srila Prabhupada and the love we had for each other.

Veda Mata shared a beautiful thought with me about Mukta. She said that Krsna took him because his heart was pure and he had an innocence that made him practically unable to put his consciousness into political matters and infighting so he was used by Krsna to bring sobriety into the atmosphere in NV to help us all realize what is important in this life and how we should act towards each other.

I’m so glad to hear you are finding solace somewhere in the midst of this great loss for you, and for all the devotees; everytime a godbrother leaves this world a little of the Prabhupada mood goes with him. So many dear devotees are leaving their bodies at a relatively young age I think Prabhupada must be needing their service somewhere else now. Something exciting is going on somewhere else in the universe and devotees are gathering there to preach. I know that in honor of your brother, who was always encouraging you to give more and complain less, you will be able to serve Krsna and the devotees more and more. It is the only shelter, you already know that, and now you will really have to take it.
I’m glad you are being strong for Cediraj, he will really need you and he is lucky to have close family like that, it will help him so much.

Prabhu, Chandra just called me last night and informed me about your condition. For some reason I was not surprised because I emailed you about a week ago and had not heard a response. When you don’t reply within 24 hours either I offended you, as the usual case, or, as in this case, something is wrong.

The first time I saw you in your office at NV you had two matajis doing service and you immediately put me to service. I was hoping you would spend time glorifying me, a newly released bhakta from prison now a temple resident. But you saw through that and got right to the essence of devotional service: SERVICE!!

I will never forget the day I unexpectantly walked to the mailroom at Dominquez State Jail and recieved a Bhrad Bhagavartma. What a surprise!! I never deserved this just like I never deserved your mercy.

Prabhu, I don’t know what to say. We need you here but Krsna has his plan. Maybe Srila Prabhupada is calling you to distribute his books again. Whatever the outcome, I am honored to know you. I will be in NV for the FofI in May. If possible, I would love to do some service for you then. Just let me know whatever you need.

PAMHO. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!!!

Please read the following to Mukta.

    Dear Muktakesha prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!!

I’m very sorry to hear of your temporary suffering. I pray that you will continue to rest comfortably safe in the hands of Lord Krishna.

Not being a native brijbasi, I don’t have memories of your service in New Vrandavan from many years ago. But I warmly remember our conversation last spring when you explained your success with the Prison Ministry preaching service. This service alone has resulted in saving thousands of souls. Personally, I experienced, with joy, your excitement for telling the stories of Krishna’s life.

You enthusiasm for sankirtan and Krishna-katha is infectious. Everyone is attracted to your association to hear alternately about preaching to thousands of prisoners or directly about Krishna’s wonderful pastimes.

Your life has been spent in wonderful service to Srila Prabhupada. Surely, he is now at your side waiting for Krishna’s final word on whether you continue your service here or perhaps join Prabhupada in his current engagement. Fortunately, as Prabhupada’s faithful follower, you always have been and always will be protected by him.

I’ve heard that many devotees visit regularly and that you constantly have the nectar sound of Prabhupada chanting the holy name in your ears. So I’m certain that you have all the protection that you need to make the most important transition of your life (if Krishna says that now is the time). Your future is certain since you have such a deep attachment only for hearing Krishna’s names and pastimes, activities which you have done your entire life as Prabhupada’s servant.

Although you already have all blessings in full, I offer my earnest prayers and blessings that you will pass quickly and comfortably if Krishna prefers that. Simultaneously, I pray that Krishna will benedict us, your friends, and benefit your many bhaktas in prison by allowing you to stay.

For you, it doesn’t matter whether you stay or go, since either way your life is full of heart-felt affectionate service for Prabhupada and Sri Sri Radha Vrndavanacandra. Personally, I hope you will be allowed to stay so once again we can remember and discuss Krishna’s ecstatic pastimes both in Goloka with His friends and family, and here in bhuloka where He engages us in His preaching service.

This is difficult to accept. I just talked to Loka and heard the
complications of your health. It made me cry. I pray and hope that everyone
is wrong (Doctors) and we will chant and dance and do japa together. I have
spent many years with you and liked your association very much. Whenever you
pass by my office door you will shout “RUPA”!!! We will argue over rent
and other bill just to have fun. Many devotees thought that why is he
yelling, but I liked it and I always thought that you are doing it out of
love. One time we had some arguments and we did not speak with each other
for sometime but than I could not tolerated and came to say hello to you and
our relationship became normal. You have always asked me to come for
morning program and we encouraged each other to follow the program. Your
love for Srila Prabhupada is clearly manifest on your office wall. You are
known to be very charitable among devotees. You liked to give. We are
missing all this. Please do not leave us. We are in hand of Krishna and he

Please accept my humble obeisances; all glories to Srila Prabhupada.
It was with great anxiety that I heard of your physical condition.

I pray to the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada, Radha Vrindaban Chandra, and Caitanya Mahaprabhu that They watch carefully over you so your passing is smooth and peaceful.

I remember so clearly our days together serving our beloved spiritual master when we were all in Buffalo temple. I developed great love for you and your brother from those early days, and remember them fondly.
I also remember you telling about the “only” instruction you received from Srila Prabhupada. He was visiting one temple here in USA, and one morning you were outside the house, chanting in your normal boisterous way. Suddenly Prabhupada’s servant came down to deliver you a message from His Divine Grace: “Tell that crazy boy to go chant somewhere else”.
I’m sure you also recognize this as proof that Prabhupada can see all our hearts and minds!

You have done a tremendous amount of service for our spiritual master, all the parampara, Lord Caitanya and Krsna Himself, by selflessly distributing SO many books.
Plus, your sense of humor gave great pleasure to many, many Vaishnavas.
These, plus all the services you have rendered that I am not aware of, are eternally to your great credit.
Please remember me when you arrive back Home.

I’m sorry I didn’t get more of your association.

Please know that Srila Prabhupada and Krsna are watching over you now, and always.

I will miss your association, laughter and sense of humor.

    – Dear Lokavarnotam prabhu and Muktakesha Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

You may not remember us. We were visitng New Vrndavan Dhama in the summer of 2005 from Vancouver BC. My husband is your God Brother, Kripanidhi Das and we were there for 10 days to visit (and accept initiation) from my spiritual master and rathyatra. We also had the good fortune to witness true community love by being invited to Mukta’s welcome home party at Nityodita prabhu’s asrama.

Also, when my wallet turned up gone, you and your brother got very busy trying to find out where it was. (THANK YOU!) I remember you sharing with us that you had been married to a Guyanese woman, I believe? My husband is from there. I also have a recording of you singing to Lord Jagannatha after bringing Them back onto the altar.

What I know about you and your brother is by seeing the love that went into the party to welcome mukta prabhu home. Sincerely, I was touched. We wanted to move there right then. THIS was community and we wanted a piece of it. Obviously, you both are well-loved and appreciated there. Politics aside.

I’m sorry I don’t have much else to offer, other than you and your brother are in my prayers and in my heart. Deeply.

Please take care of yourself, Prabhu. he needs you to be well, also.

This is Sahadeva writing from Vrindavan and I want to express how shocked and saddened I am to hear the news about dear old Mukta Kesh. He’s one of my old sankirtan buddies that I’ve never forgotten. I’ve loved and respected him for his determination to serve Krsna to the best of his ability, through thick and thin he’s always been there… and his seva for the prison ministries was something I just recently wanted to write and thank him for after reading one of your articles. As I didn’t get the chance to do that I hope that if he regains consciousness you can relay to him that his old friend saha loves him and is really happy that he had an opportunity to get his association.

    Prayers for Muktakesh Prabhu

    Dearest Brijabasis,

I just had the opportunity of visiting Muktakesh at
the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Montefiore
Hospital Intensive Care Unit for about an hour
yesterday afternoon. I was not very happy to see him
at first, considering his suffering condition.

He is unconscious and doesn’t seem to be aware of his
surroundings. His breathing is regulated by a
respirator which is connected to his trachea through a
hole in his throat. He is fed continuously from a
bottle of tan-colored foodstuff which hangs from a
rack by his bed and enters his stomach through a tube
passing through his mouth and esophagus. The product
consists of primarily liquid soybeans and vitamins, as
I read on the ingredients label. His vital signs are
continuously monitored by computer and nurses. He
appears to be in stable condition. The nurse told me
they tried this morning to allow him to breathe on his
own, but they thought his breath rate was too high, so
they put him back on the ventilator. He is wearing a
neck brace, on account of the recent operation in his
neck-spine to remove a tumor. While I was there the
nurses had to move his head to reposition a tube which
helps drain the wound in his trachea. When they were
finished and laid his head back down on the bed, he
seemed visibly disturbed and agitated for about ten
minutes. Truly my heart was sore to see Mukta in this
    miserable condition.

Then gradually I began remembering my joyful personal
pastimes with Mukta. One of my first memories of him
was 28-some years ago when we, along with dozens of
other New Vrindaban devotees, worked the Pope Pick in
Chicago in October 1979. We all hawked Pope buttons
before, during, and after John Paul II’s outdoor mass
at Brighton Park. There must have been a million
people there, and we worked the crowd all day long
until late at night. After the crowd had dissipated,
and the pick was over, I sat in Dharmatma’s van
counting my collection. It was about 10 or 11 p.m. All
our scores were counted, and Mukta was shocked that I,
a brand-new sankirtan devotee, had collected $1643 and
I had beaten his impressive score. Mukta was highly
competitive to please Krishna, to be the biggest for
Krishna, so he had some challenging words with me and
promptly picked up his button bag and ran out back
into the dark to try to find a few more people to buy
    a few more buttons.

A few months later, Dharmatma sent a few teams of
devotees to work a big concert at Pittsburgh’s Civic
Arena. I think we were distributing paperback books,
probably Easy Journey To Other Planets, on the
sidewalks. I could not get the hand of this type of
sankirtan, so I just followed Mukta around to see how
he did so big. Although I was shy at approaching
people, Mukta was fearless and I tried to follow in
his footsteps. But what big footsteps they were!

However, before I knew it, we were all picked up by
the police and we spent a few hours in the Allegheny
County Jail. Mukta was incensed that these ignorant
cops would try to stop Lord Chaitanya’s sankirtan
movement, and he told them so in no uncertain terms. I
was surprised by his audacity. After things quieted
down, Mukta rallied the devotees by starting a raucous
kirtan in the jail holding cell, and we all passed the
time chanting the Holy Name until we were released an
    hour or two later.

During the intervening years from 1979 until the
present I have had other opportunities to serve with
Mukta in one way or another; most recently in his
ISKCON PRISON MINISTRY by helping edit and publish
five books written by Tirtha in Prison. I always
thought that Muktakesh was constantly thinking “How
    can I best serve Krishna?”

As I indicated earlier, I was sorely aggrieved when I
first saw Mukta’s condition in Intensive Care, but
little by little, I began to understand more clearly
that Mukta was completely in Krishna’s hands. He was
being served by the hospital staff, and by his son and
brother Loka, and by the prayers of all the beloved
Brijabasis. Earlier Loka had brought a small cassette
player into the room and placed it on a shelf on some
machinery near Mukta’s head. Minute after minute and
hour after hour a self-repeating tape of Srila
Prabhupada chanting “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna
Krishna Hare Hare; Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare
Hare” constantly bathed the room with the pleasing
sound vibration of the Holy Names. Next to the tape
player was placed a small photograph of a Lord
Nrsimhadev Deity; the protector of the devotees.

The nurse was friendly and we chatted for a while. She
was especially curious about the chanting on the
cassette tape, and told me that Mukta’s brother had
telephoned that morning to make sure the tape was
playing. She wanted to know what were the words on the
tape, and she attentively and respectively listened to
my explanation of Mukta’s religious beliefs, the power
of the Holy Names of Hare, Krishna and Rama, and
Krishna’s statement in Bhagavad-gita: “Whoever, at the
time of death, quits his body, remembering Me alone,
at once attains My nature.” I explained to her, “Most
of Ronald’s friends call him Mukta; I don’t know how
many people actually call him Ronald, so perhaps he
may not clearly recognize the name. So I suggest when
you talk to him to see if he is responsive, to see if
he can consciously follow a direction to move his toe,
perhaps you should address him by the name Mukta.” She
    laughed and agreed.

I also had some quality time alone with Mukta.
Although he did not appear responsive, I thought
perhaps he might be able to hear my voice, so I spoke
with him for ten or fifteen minutes; I introduced
myself, and expressed my appreciation for his
association during the years. I told him all the
Brijabasis were keeping him in their prayers. I told
him that he was in Krishna’s hands (indeed at every
moment of our lives we are in Krishna’s hands, but
sometimes when we are particularly helpless, we become
more aware of our dependency), and I told him that we
all love him. He is very dear to us, as I am sure he
is dear to Prabhupada and Krishna. I also told him he
sometimes can be a big rascal, but I said so out of
affection and half-joking. I think he appreciated my
    visit.

I finally left the hospital feeling great inspiration
in my heart; believing that Krishna is taking care of
Mukta, as He is taking care of us all. Is this not the
quality of a Vaishnava; that he makes us remember
Krishna in any condition of life?

    My Dear Lokavarnotamma Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

When I first joined Srila Prabhupada’s movement in the ISKCON Buffalo Temple in 1972, I was a mental and emotional wreck, having been chewed up and spit out by a dysfunctional family and a drug-crazed hippie culture. Thus, I found it difficult to engage in Srila Prabhupada’s simple and sublime process of Krishna consciousness, although I always tried my best.

I can remember that you and your wonderful brother, Mukta Kesa, while sincerely engaged in working hard to spread Srila Prabhupada’s mission, always had time to joke and laugh with me and this, more than anything else, made the process of Krishna consciousness so much easier for me.

Sometimes you and Mukta would make me laugh so hard that my sides would nearly split. You thought I was “goofy” and you told me so, but it was your combined sense of humor that made me like this.

I don’t think that I would have ever remained in Krishna consiousness if not for the wonderful association of yourself and Mukta Kesa and devotees like Mother Sita, Madhava, Gunagrahi, and all of the other wonderful devotees in the Buffalo ISKCON Temple.

I felt, for the first time in my life, that people really loved me and cared about me, and I could perceive Srila Prabhupada’s love and compassion coming through all of you.

I am eternally indebted to your wonderful brother, Mukta Kesa, for helping me surmount insurmountable odds and enabling me to remain in Krishna consciousness for so many years.

I hope that you and good ol’ Mukta Kesa keep me situated in a tiny corner of your hearts. I’m sure that you both have a place in Lord Krishna’s merciful heart and that He is embracing you both.

Please forgive me if I sound too sentimental and not philosophical enough. That is just who I am. I can’t change who I am.

Hrsikesa’s story of Mukta’s passing brought tears to our eyes. Just see how Krsna arranges for His devotee to leave this place. How fortunate Mukta was to have all of you there to assist him. His kindness, enthusiasm and determination certainly won the hearts of so many.

I remember the years that I was fortunate to work with him on New Vrindavan SKP. He always found a way to make us laugh even though sometimes we wanted to wring his neck. He was always the first out and the last to come back and was a great source of enthusiasm for the other SKP devotees.

He had such a soft heart. Recently after seeing the photo of my son and his new wife he cried being so happy for Drdha. He always saw the good side of devotees and wouldn’t entertain gossip.

One picture is frozen in my mind of Mukta walking back and forth in front of Krsna Balarama temple in Vrndavana, holding his bead-bag high on his chest like he did and literally yelling Krsna’s holy names almost at the top of his voice so that every living entity nearby would be benedicted.

My heart is broken upon hearing of the passing of our beloved friend and Godbrother, Mukta Kesh Prabhu.

I was really hoping to spend quality time in his association this coming summer. I send to you my sincerest sympathies on the occasion of the passing away of your beloved father. Please know that hundreds of devotees in various parts of the world share your feeling of mourning. For the last couple weeks he has been prominently in my heart, my prayers and my dreams.
Your father is a very special soul. I have known him for over thirty years and have nothing but affection for him.
We all know how much he struggled to overcome conditionings that were deep rooted from his past. He struggled more than most of us will ever know. At times he fell in his battles, but he never gave up. He strived to pick himself up again and again. But through it all, his faith in Krishna and Srila Prabhupada was always shining. Through his victories and defeats, he was everyone’s well-wisher. I never saw him bear envy or hatred to anyone. He blamed no one but himself for his troubles and inside that rough and restless exterior there was a gentleness and humility that was real and rare.
I have seen many devotees give up their practice and faith or become cynics for a fraction of the difficulties your father passed through. He is a shining example for all the world of a great soul who would never give up his beloved Lord.

Your father is a soft hearted and compassionate soul who genuinely strived for pure love. His love has touched many hearts; from devotees and friends to destitute prisoners who he granted the highest meaning of life to live for. His life will bring hope, courage and joy to all who knew him and many who will hear of him. Please, Chedi Raj, be proud to have had such a rare soul as your father. Learn from him to not be implicated in vices that only lead to torment. Learn from him the beauty of faith, compassion and goodness, which he fought battles every day to achieve.
Your father had an amazing attachment to the Holy Names of Krishna. The scriptures tell us that such an attachment will surely bring us to Krishna. In the end, he was surrounded by exalted personalities who sang the Holy Names as a tribute of love and gratitude to his life of devotion.
With tears in my heart, I have to come to grips with the reality that I have lost a dear friend and Godbrother. But behind the cloud of my sorrow I feel the sunlight of joy. For Srila Prabhupada and Krishna have liberated their dear devotee, Mukta Kesha Prabhu from his worldly challenges and surely brought him to a higher destination.
Your father lovingly named you after his dearest friend and traveling partner, who was a saint in every way. It was his hope that the divine qualities and blessings of His Grace Chedi Raja Prabhu would always be there to guide and protect you.
Thank you Cedi Raja. My heartfelt prayers are always with you.
    Your servant,

    Dear Lokavarnottama Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

He was always very kind and friendly to me. I’ll miss him!

I’m sure you must be feeling his separation keenly. But Krsna is
always kind and always remembers a devotee’s service. And a devotee
like Mukta is hard to forget. Surely Krsna’s mercy must be with him.

Hoping this finds you in good health,

    Dear Loka Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Below is a letter sent by Bhakta Carl, one of the inmates Mukta Prabhu was
preaching to. I thought you might want to add it to the letters on
    Dandavats.

Also, although you may be tiring of hearing this by now, my husband and I
both wanted to express how deeply we are missing Muktakesa Prabhu’s love,
kindness, and encouragement. He was one of our best friends and well-wishers
in New Vrindavan and it just isn’t the same without him. He always made it a
point to stand up for us, encourage us, and share so many wonderful tokens
of his kindness, especially giving us books and sweet photos of Srila
    Prabhupada and Radhanath Maharaj.

My husband was saying yesterday that he realizes now how much he misses the
fact that Muktakesa Prabhu was the only one who would chastize him if he
    didn’t attend mangala-arati.

I can’t believe that he isn’t going to come through the door to ask me (a
few times a day sometimes!) to attach a photo or file to an email he’s
    sending you.

We really miss him. We can’t begin to imagine what the void must be like for
you and Chediraj. However, his departure was a really eye-opener, too, a
reminder that we have to develop REAL attachment to Krsna’s holy name and
serving Prabhupada’s mission. Just see how Prabhupada, through you and the
other devotees, prepared such an auspicious departure for him. Thank you for
allowing us to be a part of this glorious part of our Vaisnava history. We
are forever indebted to Muktakesa Prabhu for leaving us with such a clear
message of what it really means to prepare for the moment of death.

Thank you, Prabhu. We don’t have much to offer, but if we can serve you in
any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

I hope this meets you well.

    Hare Krsna.

    From Bhakta Carl:

    My fellow devotees,

I am just one of the many inmates incarcerated across America who relied on
Muktakesa das for support, guidance, and friendship. He was fully dedicated
to his work with the ISKCON Prison Ministry and the news of his recetn
passing was both shocking adn heart wrenching, and yet, as I reflected on
the event I began to see it’s glorious side. Thus, I wrote this triumphant
tribute to help me direct my focus to the joyful aspects of his passing,
rather than dwelling on my own personal sadness at the loss of a true
friend. I hope that perhaps, by sharing my work with others, I might be able
to both offer them some comfort in their grieving, and at the same time,
help them to sing a song in honor of our brother Muktakesa das.

    KRSNA matir astu,

    Bhakta Carl

A CAROL FOR THE PASSING OF A FRIEND
(Sung to the tune of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”)

    “HARK!” the Visnudutas said,
“Look who’s lying in that bed
    Muktakesa, our Lord’s servant
LISTEN! Hear his friends all chant

“Let’s take wing to guide his soul
    To his final heartfelt goal
    His life’s journey now complete
We’ll lead him to KRSNA’s feet

    “Joyful all devotees rise
Join the trumpets in the skies
    Prabhupada suceeds again
Praise the passing of a friend”

In the last couple of weeks I’ve lost three old friends and colleagues: Suhotra Dasa Tapovanacari, Puru Dasa, and Muktakesa Dasa. All three have now, as we say, left this world. (The prosaic world just usually says “died.”)

Some time back, Muktakesa, always generous, had seen I wasn’t wearing a watch, so he gave me one (a pretty fancy Seiko). And since sannyasis are sometimes known for not holding on to things, he made me promise not to give it away. I used to see him in New Vrindaban, where he was running a program to offer spiritual help to prisoners in different parts of America who’d turned towards Krishna.

This past January, Suhotra and I had shared a pleasant lunch together in Mayapur (we’d had a lovely little debate over Semantics or something or other), and some days later he came to visit me—really just wanting to get together—at the flat where I was staying. Dressed in saffron, with a bag of—whatever—slung from his shoulder, he resembled a large-framed Buddhist monk. But instead of contemplating koans and seeking a void, he was always intent on the transcendent person Krishna.

And also in Mayapur in December-January I met my old friend Puru Dasa again, after a long while. I think he’d expected me to be cross with him (we had our differences on more issues than one), but I was truly delighted to see him, and we spent a short but warm time together. He reintroduced me to his daughters, whom I hadn’t seen since they were kids: “This is your spiritual uncle, Jayadvaita Swami.” And we enjoyed talking together about things concerning Krishna.

I had affection for all three of these godbrothers, and I’ll miss them.

That’s how it is. You watch your friends go, one by one. Then those who are left watch you go.

    Hare Krishna.

New Vrndavan, USA : Lokavarnatamma Prabhu, His brother, Mukta Kesa, and their Power of Persuasion
    By Srila Jiva Goswami dasa

Different Devotees manifest different miraculous potencies. Devotees who exhibit yoga seem to me either not aware You are flying, floating, appearing in more than one place simultaneously, or You take it as normal behavior.

An example of this latter circumstance is the gift of superb Powers of Persuasion, regularly manifested by the owner of the beautiful name: Loka Vahrna Tama Prabhu. This week I offer a few examples of Loka displaying that facility.

It was a warm, quiet afternoon one day at the Simply Wonderful Restaurant in Columbus. On High Street, cars moved back and forth like blue, red and green rays of light.

Business was slow, that summer day. I was looking at the steam table, particularly at the stainless steel tray which was filled with Lord Caitanya’s Remnants in the form of Chakra Pani’s fabulous Cauliflower Pakoras.

It was beginning to look like time for a mid day break. The sandwich, drink and salad bars were stocked. The serving line was clean. Across High Street, on the lawn of Ohio State, Chakra Pani sat in the Lotus Position, as he did at the same time every day. He was reading Srila Prabhupada’s Books.

Loka appeared, wearing a kurta and a pair of dungarees. “I’m going out to drum up a little business,” he announced, as he wiped his hands in his heavy kitchen apron, untied it and tossed it to me.

“Go ahead,” I called. I didn’t see how anything was to be done which would generate customers. I was swimming in Pakoras.

The front door opened, Loka stepped out and ushered a couple directly in. The new comers came along the chute formed between the beautiful lattice and the right hand wall. When they turned the corner and saw me waiting to serve them, another guy entered. More people followed along quickly. Before long, I had to move up the line to the register. Narasingha Guru came out and worked the steam tables.

Guests were starting to stack up. We served them and moved them along. Another Devotee had to come on from upstairs to clear the tables. Suddenly, we were humming. We started to call to each other; “Avocado Delite!” and, “Strawberry Smoothee!”

Customers, mostly new ones, seemed to be enjoying themselves. From their point of view, the food was great and the price was right. The cash register was ringing, but it was Prasadama we were distributing.

Perplexed but happy with the sudden influx, I came away from my post to see if I could find out what was causing our sudden good fortune. Moving upstream, against the burgeoning line, I side stepped and “excused me” until I was at the front door.

I could see Chakra Pani, still across the street in the Lotus, with the Bhagavada Gita As It Is in his lap. I glanced to my left, and there was Loka, with his broad, white shirted back to me, just in the act of guiding more new customers in. I stood close to him to see if I could hear what he was saying. I wondered how it was that he was channeling practically any and everyone he chose. The people he spoke to were laughing and smiling. I listened carefully. I heard the words, “Big, big,” but I could not tarry. The line was stacking up. I had to go back to the register.

The afternoon sailed by. We did record business. More importantly, we distributed huge amounts of Prasadama. At the end of the day, I asked Loka what he had been doing to get such results. “I just talk to the people,” he said. He saw nothing unusual.

I heard you say, “Big, big …” I prompted. “What was that about?”

“Oh,” Loka smiled at me. “I was just telling them about the drinks. You know, big big.” He laughed.

The next day, I tried the same approach. People avoided me. I was self conscious. Loka came along and once again took up what he called “drumming up a little business.” Again, the restaurant filled quickly with happy delighted customers. Loka did not seem to think of his gift as unusual or extraordinary.

I thought deeds such as these came from On High. The key to success, to me, is in somehow making the objective in accordance with the precepts of Krsna Consciousness. To do that, one needs to understand those principles, and getting to that place is done by a lot of chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!

Another instance of Loka’s Powers of Persuasion occurred down at the Dodge Dealership on Route 2, just north of Moundsville. I had occasion to bring my car in for maintenance, and I wanted a loaner. Loka was with me. I asked the service manager about a loaner. I was turned down flat. “We don’t provide loaners, the service manager declared.”

Loka saw my agitation. “What’s the matter?” he asked. He always had a certain friendly happy grounded demeanor.

“I have to leave my car, but I can’t get a loaner,” I reported.

“They’ll give you a loaner,” Loka said.

    “I already asked. They won’t,” I responded.

Loka beckoned and I followed him upstairs. There he stood a moment, with me beside him, at the owner’s door. Presently the owner looked up. “What?” he said.

Loka gave him a smile and pointed at me with his thumb, as if he was hitchhiking. “He wants you to give him a loaner,” Loka said. That was all there was to it. No song and dance, no long sad story, just “He wants it, let him have it.” I was presented as a solution.

The loaner was pretty good too; a used police cruiser.

“How’d you do that?” I asked. Although my body is older than Loka’s I felt like a boy at his side.

“You just have to show them they can do what they want to do,” he replied.

Loka was known as one of the very physically strongest of the Brijabasis at New Vrindabana. I’m talking about muscles. I was fascinated with arm wrestling. A couple of times I challenged Loka to arm wrestle. He beat me with the smiling ease of a kid who blows the tendrils from a dandelion.

I screwed my will and built my strength, exercising and harboring physical resources. My body is taller than Loka’s, I weigh more, I should be able to beat him at arm wrestling, I thought. I spent a few weeks preparing. I just had to beat him, I thought. At last, I felt ready. I approached Loka at Bahulabhana.

“Let’s arm wrestle again,” I said. I moved my elbows back and forth and stuck my hand out on the hood of Dodge Rama dasa. This time, I knew I had a chance.

Previously, Loka had always quickly accepted. This time he did not proffer his hand in return. He eyed me quizzically, then laughed and declined. He’d seen something.

    “Why not?” I asked.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” he responded.

I thought about that. I considered the way I’d built my strength and the determination I had not to get beaten again. Loka was right, to beat me, he would have hurt me.

I am sure that is part of how Loka does this communication facility. He sees and relates to the other person. Perhaps the feat is unconscious, but the effect is never the less real. That insight comes from the Ultimate Connection.

I think of Loka and the New Vrindabana Brijabasis like the brightest of shining Spirit Souls, burnished by years of Service and pure in their causeless actions. Lokavarnatamma Prabhu is to me the epitome of Denizens there.

Hare Krsna, having just read over the 50 mesages about Muktakesa prabhu i just want to share the one & only time i can remember Muktakesa speaking with me at New Vrindaban because perhaps those that knew him will be interested. I was fasinated by his little grey car packed with LP’s in the back seat & trunk, all one space . He would cruise thru various places selling the LP’s from the vehecle. So one day he comes up to me at NV, shaking, perhaps he knew that i liked him,and tells me what had happened yesterday. He tells me that he had been sitting in his car counting the laksmi he earned, when some once comes directly up to his window and smashes it in with a baseball bat. This person had seen Muktakesa prabhu counting the laksmi in the drivers seat. Then this person demanded the laksmi & took it, about $300 something Muktakesa said. Although this occured yesterday Muktakesa prabhu was still shaking. Although i sort of only knew Muktakesa prabhu from a distance,i liked him a lot. He was all heart .
