Character versus reputation (5 min video)
Mahatma Das: Your character is who you really are. Your reputation is who people think you are.
You may go somewhere with your reputation, but only character will keep you there.

We have this problem that we want people to see us in a certain way and in our humility workshop we do an exercise and we make a question “what do you want people to believe about you” so when you show up, when you go somewhere, what are you thinking that you would like people to think about you.

Oh here is a great devotee, there’s a humble devotee, is a serious devotee, here’s a pure devotee, here’s a devotee who’s good at this or that – what do we want people to think about us.

Well people think about this, it’s what we call reputation, which really has nothing to do with who we are, and especially if you’re a good pretender then you could take everybody up and you could get everyone to think you’re much different than you really are.

The character is what are concerned with in Krishna consciousness. In a sense we are concerned about what people think of us because we want to set a good example but we’re not concerned in the false ego way…
