[Note: The following project is sponsored by ISKCON Mayapur with support from Friends of the BBT.]

ISKCON’s flagship center in Sridhama Mayapur will soon be home to the “A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada Reading Room”, bringing together in one facility all of Srila Prabhupada’s books. This may be the only library in the world where all of Srila Prabhupada’s books will be available in all languages.

Srila Prabhupada used to keep a display in his room in Mayapur where he would showcase copies of his recently published books from around the world. He was very keen on making his books available in as many languages as possible, and was always eager to display them.Today the BBT produces books in over 80 languages.

The Prabhupada Reading Room in Mayapur will serve many purposes. For one thing, pilgrims to the holy Dhama who want to take advantage of the pure atmosphere by studying Srila Prabhupada’s books will not have to carry many books with them. All of the books will be available in a comfortable, quiet library setting with good facilities for contemplative study.

The Reading Room will also introduce Srila Prabhupada’s books to Mayapur’s many international visitors who are not yet familiar with them.

Importantly, the Reading Room will serve as a living, visible monument to the central role Srila Prabhupada’s international book publication and distribution plays in ISKCON. Countless thousands of visitors each year learn about ISKCON by visiting the Mayapur campus. They see kirtans, classes, Deity worship and beautiful buildings, and now they will also see how devotees are deriving satisfaction and real spiritual benefit by studying Prabhupada’s books in many languages. The Reading Room will thus convey the important message that “Books are the basis.”

Books are already being gathered, so there will be a collection available in time for this year’s Gaura Purnima festival. The collection is currently housed next to the Mayapur Academy of Deity Worship, but the official home of the Reading Room, at least initially, will be upstairs from the newly constructed brahmacari prasadam hall.

Eventually, with the financial support of devotees worldwide, we hope the A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada Reading Room will occupy its own, stand-alone building in a prominent place on the ISKCON Mayapur campus within the next year or two.

Please do not miss this opportunity to serve Srila Prabhupada, the Holy Dhama and all the Vaisnavas who will use this great facility.

There are many important projects to support, but this one is very special. By contributing to this Reading Room project, we can at once serve the Holy Dhama, the pilgrims to the Holy Dhama, the cause of introducing Srila Prabhupada’s books to the public, and glorifying Srila Prabhupada’s books generally.

It is amazing how many people visit Mayapur every year. The ISKCON we want them to see is the ISKCON that is invigorated by regular study of Srila Prabhupada’s books. We want them to see that ISKCON, because we want to really be that ISKCON. We really are that ISKCON. Where would any of us be without Srila Prabhupada’s books?

The A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada Reading Room will remind us of the importance of Prabhupada’s books, and thus will keep us on the right track. It will also convey this message of the central importance of Srila Prabhupada’s books to the public.

When we go on pilgrimage, we should take advantage and get in some real quality time studying Srila Prabhupada’s books. Those who distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books know how important it is to regularly read them. And those who study Prabhupada’s books are inspired to distribute them.

As the article mentions, Srila Prabhupada was very fond of displaying his books. We should have nice displays of Srila Prabhupada’s books at every public function. In Mayapur, though, a little display rack in a glass case is not enough. There should be a whole building dedicated to housing Srila Prabhupada’s books in all languages, which provides a nice, comfortable atmosphere for serious study.

Mayapur is Srila Prabhupada’s home. A stand alone library at ISKCON Mayapur will be a living temple to Srila Prabhupada’s eternal instructions. He lives forever in his books. We worship Srila Prabhupada in his puspa samadhi, but when we read his books we are also directly in his presence. That process of hearing is very important.

One who studies Bhagavad Gita worships Krishna by his intelligence. Such worship is needed. When devotees read and discuss Prabhupada’s books, we know we are pleasing him. The Reading Room will manifest our understanding of this important fact.

Let’s make this happen. This should be a broad-based, international effort. If 500 or 1,000 devotees could just give $50 or $100 each, the goal could easily be met, and a nice building could be constructed for the purpose.
