By HH Bhakti Purusottama Swami

Dear devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

We request worldwide devotees to pray to Sri Nrsimhadeva for our dear Guru Maharaja, HH Jayapataka Swami, to come out of his critical health situation. Maharaja is in Mumbai attending GBC meetings. On 23rd early morning, he was found in the bed unconscious around 3.30 a.m.Devotees rushed him to the Hinduja hospital, thinking that Maharaja may had a heart attack. He was admitted in ICU. But later doctors diagnosed that it is brain hemorrhage. We request all the devotees to pray and chant for his quick recovery.

Thank you. Your humble servant

Bhakti Purusottama Swami

05-Nov-08, afternoon, HH Jayapataka Maharaj’s status report

by Dr Madhavananda das, Director of Bhaktivedanta Hospital, Mumbai

Maharaj is stable, even today. His consciousness is better. Dr PP Ashok, the neurologist was happy with Maharaj’s alertness. His blood pressure, blood sugar and other parameters are stable.

Today onwards, they are gradually taking him off the ventilator. This process is gradual.

Maharaj remains stable but critical. The prayers should continue intensely. It is the most helpful thing that can be done.

PS: Madhavananda Prabhu mentioned that the report would be sent around 3pm everyday after the main doctors come and check Maharaja.

H. H. JAYAPATAKA MAHARAJ’S STATUS REPORT, 04-Nov-08, afternoon

By Dr Madhavananda das, Director of Bhaktivedanta Hospital

Maharaj’s consciousness has been stable and he responds to verbal commands by opening his eyes or by facial expression. This has been up and down and sometimes he is responsive and sometimes he is unresponsive.

He has been moving his left hand, the other limbs are not moving and is a matter of concern.

The neurologist Dr PP Ashok and the itensivist Dr Hegde are monitoring him closely. According to them things are taking their natural course and recovery is a lengthy process.

Even though a decline in consciousness is observed since the last 3 days and Maharaj remains critical, and he is in a state where things may go wrong, there is no reason to believe that he will not recover. The prayers must go on and that is the only factor which will change the course of events.

Overall it can be summarized that

• Maharaj’s condition is critical but stable
• There is no further deterioration
• He still responds to commands but not as much as 4 days back.
• His blood pressure and other parameters like blood sugar, potassium levels, platelets are stable.
• Tomorrow they will again try to wean him from the ventilator.
• The doctors from Bhaktivedanta Hospital are constantly in touch with the treating doctors.
• Prayers must continue.

Ratnavali dd:

Jayapayaka Maharaja’s consciousness level is fluctuating. The whole day yesterday Maharaja was only in the sleeping state, no response until 6.15pm. At 6.15pm when a devotee was reading Caitanya Caritamrta he opened his eye and upon the instruction of the nurse when the devotee asked him to lift his left hand he slowly lifted but he couldn’t move his other limbs although he was trying. Soon after that Maharaja again went to the sleeping state. As per the doctor Maharaja’s general body conditions like BP, sugar level, pulse rate etc are stable except he has some chest pain.

At 2.30 am there was another devotee who was reciting Caitanya Caritamrta to Maharaja saw him opening his eye for 10min without any movement of eyelids and also no other bodily movements.

Like this there is fluctuation of consciousness level. The different doctors are going to meet today and later we will be sending it to you their report.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

Ratnavali dd:

Yesterday around 12am (midnight) by the mercy of Sri Sri Radha Rasabihariji, Jayapataka Maharaja opened his eyes. The nurse went and informed the servant of Maharaja who is usually in the waiting room. No attendant is allowed to be inside after 11pm in the night. During the day only one attendant is allowed to be besides Maharaja. The attendant is generally reading Caitanya Caritamrta to Maharaja (even if conscious or not conscious) or he is chanting his japa along with Srila Prabhupada’s japa which is constantly being played. So the servant rushed inside and opened the Caitanya Caritamrta and showed Srila Prabhupada’s picture in the book to him. Maharaja looked at the picture for a while and he wanted to say something but he was unable.

The nurse wanted to test the level of consciousness of Maharaja. She asked him to raise the left hand and Maharaja slowly lifted his left hand. When he was asked to lift the right hand because of the swelling he wasn’t able to. Then she asked to lift the right and left legs. Maharaja was trying but he was unable to. Since for the three days he hasn’t been conscious and there were no movements so he his weak right now.

He is only 5% conscious right now. As long as Maharaja is with life support and in ICU it is very critical. The conscious level keeps fluctuating therefore we should keep praying and chanting for Jayapataka Maharaja intensely until he comes out of the ICU.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

Ratnavali dd:

Dr. P. P Ashok visited Maharaja and he wasn’t happy with his situation. Maharaja is not conscious and doesn’t respond to any commands. Brain haemorrage is very unpredictable. Any moment anything can happen. Blood preassure is also on the higher side and keeps fluctuating. The doctor says Maharaja can remain like this for a longer period of time. He is still in ICU and with ventilator.

Let us all pray intensely to Krsna. Only Krsna can do something. It is all in His hands. May Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari cast their most merciful glance upon our beloved Jayapataka Maharaja so that he can come out of this horrifying situation and be with us all again.

Your humble servant,

(31-Oct-08, 6:30 p.m. report)

Ratnavali dd:

I have been informed that many devotees are worried as they didn’t hear any reports today. We are sorry for that. The reason is, the Mumbai Management has asked the devotees’ and servants to shift from the Guest rooms as all their rooms have been booked in advance for 3 to 4 months. Actually the Mumbai Management is not encouraging any one to visit without advance booking.

After the tracheostomy yesterday, Maharaja is not fully conscious. He is resting.

Only once this morning he opened his eyes and after that he is resting again. At 1.30pm they have turned off the ventilator system. Maharaja was able to breathe by himself until 7.30pm. They didn’t want to strain Maharaja and therefore they have turned on the ventilator system again.

The blood preassure is on the higher side but the doctors say it is alright. The sugar level is normal. The platelet count is 98,000 today.

Subhag Maharaja and all the senior devotees are asking us to chant and pray more for Jayapataka Maharaja’s recovery. Only Lord Krishna can perform miracles and without his blessings nothing can happen. As long as Maharaja is in the ICU his situation is still critical. Maharaja appeared in a dream to a devotee yesterday and said, “Please keep on chanting. That gives me strength.”

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

(30-Oct-08, 8:30 p.m. report)

Ratnavali dd:

This afternoon the doctors did Tracheostomy. Tracheostomy is a surgical opening in the trachea (windpipe) that forms a temporary opening to make breathing easier. They have inserted the ventilator tube into this hole instead of sending the tube through the mouth.

Since Jayapataka Maharaja is unable to breathe by himself they cannot remove the ventilator. They cannot keep the tubes through the mouth for a long time and it can catch infection. Guru Maharaja also feels uncomfortable with the tubes. Therefore the panel of doctors decided to go for tracheostomy.

Compared to yesterday the consciousness level is down today. There could be different factors. They will wait and see tomorrow. Apart from this the other parameters are stable.

We do not know how many more days it might take for Maharaja to breathe by himself and to be out of ventilator. It is all up to Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna now. Whatever happened so far is a miracle and we need more miracles for Maharaja to completely come out of this situation successfully.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

(30-Oct-08, 12:30 p.m. report)

Ratnavali dd:

CT scan report is positive. The report shows the same situation as the day one and nothing new. Guru Maharaja is coming back to consciousness again like yesterday. When Gopal Krishna Maharaja came to visit him, Maharaja took Gopal Krishna Maharaja’s hand and put it on his head and had tears in his eyes.

The only biggest hurdle right now is his respiratory system. If that functions well then they could remove the ventilator.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

(30-Oct-08, 10:00 a.m. report)

Ratnavali dd:

Maharaja was given sedatives yesterday in the night as he wants the tubes to be removed. The tubes can be removed only until he is able to breathe normally.

Today in the morning his conscious level is down a bit. They are taking him to the CT scan and then we could have some clear picture.

Devotees are asked to keep on praying especially at this most critical moment.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

—————————–

(29-Oct-08, 6:00 p.m. report)

Ratnavali dd:

Maharaja had to be put on sedatives yesterday evening because when he is conscious he asks the doctors to remove the tubes as it is uncomfortable for him. The doctor’s plan was to start removing the ventilator today.

Today early in the morning Maharaja came to awakeness from his sleeping state. He asked again for clicker to chant mentally and chanted few mantras on it after that he became tired and slept for a while. Since his condition was stable the doctors put the ventilation off without removing the tubes to check how Maharaja was responding. For 2 hours Maharaja was able to breathe by himself but later felt uncomfortable therefore the ventilator was turned on again. Since then Maharaja is exhausted and is taking rest.

Jayapataka Maharaja’s sugar level is normal. His platelet count is 82,000 today. Although his blood preassure is fluctuating still nothing alarming.

The doctors will continue this process until he is able to breathe normally without the help of ventilator. Let us keep intensely praying and chanting. May Lord Krishna and Lord Narasimhadeva empower the doctors and nurses in this process as well as to give strength to Maharaja to cross over these difficult moments.

Your humble servant,

Today in Mayapur, HH Bhakti Charu Swami spoke on HH Jayapataka Swami’s health situation and how Lord Krsna always protects His devotees. Click to listen here. Continuous prayers and chanting are going on in Mayapur for HH Jayapataka Swami. A Nrsimha Homa was performed on 28th October. Today Panca Tattva Astottara Nama is recited pleading the most merciful incarnations to help Maharaja come out of this situation. You can download all these prayers in our Kirtan Downloads section.

(28-Oct-08, 12:30 p.m. report) Ratnavali dd:

Dr Hegde came to check Maharaja today and the doctor said he looks better than yesterday and there is no need to panic. Jayapataka Maharaja is feeling very uncomfortable with the tubes and asking everyone to remove them. So the doctor has given instructions to the nurses and local duty doctors to remove the ventilator. They are planning how to do it. The process usually takes between 24 to 48 hours. They are praying that everything would go smoothly.

The cardiologist also came to see Maharaja and he said it is natural for the blood preassure to fluctuate. They are giving the blood preassure medicines under his guidance.

Jayapataka Maharaja asked one senior disciple signaling to get him a clicker to chant. Since that devotee had his and Maharaja took it from him and he is chanting mentally the maha mantra on the clicker slowly.

Your humble servant,

Bhakti Purusottama Swami:

Doctors at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai where HH Jayapataka Maharaj is warded have instructed ISKCON to discourage devotees from visiting Maharaj. They fear that Guru Maharaj’s health condition may worsen due to possible infection from visitors. We request devotees not to come to Mumbai because nobody is allowed to go inside the ICU ward as the Hospital authorities are very strict now. Only way devotees can help is by chanting and praying to Lord Nrsimhadev. Devotees can do Congregational chanting. They can take sankalpa to offer the extra rounds to Gurudev.

Some senior devotees (GBCs) have stayed on in Mumbai to be with Maharaja but they also do not have open access to Maharaja. Devotees like Gopal Krsna Maharaja, Sivarama Maharaja, Madhu Sevita prabhu and Virabahu prabhu etc. Bhakti Charu Swami and Praghosa prabhu are on their way to Mayapur to be with the devotees there, the vast majority of whom are disciples of HH Jayapataka Maharaja.

The medical team at the moment is only observing the developments on the condition of HH Jayapataka Maharaj and something more could only be said in the next 24 hours. An information office has been set up in the Juhu temple to attend to the queries of devotees. Devotees interested can call +91 22 26244500 (06 am to 09 pm) or see the updates in http://www.mayapur.com/ or http://www.jpsoffice.com/

There are also two Doctors of the ISKCON Bhaktivedanta Hospital who are at the Hinduja Hospital and who are monitoring HH Jayapataka Maharaj health developments round the clock.

Thank you.

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Last night Kavicandra Maharaja and I visited HH Jayapataka Maharaja. As we walked into the room Kavicandra Maharaja called out to Jayapataka Maharaja, Jayapataka Maharaja turned his head towards us, briefly opening his eyes and raised his arm in response.

After we spent a short amount of time with Jayapataka Maharaja, Kavicandra Maharaja and I spoke with one of the doctors (not one of the specialists but a doctor from Bhaktivedanta Hospital).

The following are notes I took and the doctor read to confirm that they were accurate:

- Platelet count is 74000 - this is safe level. It needs to improve more. (Platelets are what cause the blood to clot)
- Electrolyte is in good condition
- He is responding to verbal communication
- He his semi-conscious
- Recovery after 2-3 days (this means he will be taken off the ventilator)
- Still on ventilator
- Right side is weak - he may have suffered a right side stroke. Had a pontine haemorrhage
- All other things are good
- Has hepatitis C
- Hepatitis C has caused the spleen to enlarge. This is causing low platelet count
- Blood pressure is almost 150/90 - near normal
- Diabetes is in control
- Has hypertension

The doctors affirm that he is on the road to recovery.

Hope this meets you all in Krsna consciousness and best of health.

Your servant,
Nrsimha Kavaca dasa

Purusottama Swami:

Dear Maharaja/Prabhu, Please accept my humble obeisance . All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

This morning the doctor said he may remove ventilator and all tubes within the next 24 hours if every things goes as it is now.

Maharaja is now more conscious but very emotional. By seeing devotees tears come from his eyes. The doctor said we have to completely stop any devotees going to meet maharaj including senior devotees because as soon as devotees go to meet him due to excitement his blood preassure increases. If devotees will not stop visiting Maharaj, the doctor said, they will not be able to make him free from ventilator. His blood pressure is ok now. Bloolet count is no more decreasing even without medecine. He seems to be more reciprocative. By seeing all these symptoms the doctors feel more satisfied.

Few astrologers have said HH’s condition will reman critical to some extend untill 28th Oct. because of tithi is Amavasya. After that things will go better. But still untill Nov. 14th we have to be careful.

We are very thankfull to the devotees around the world who are praying for HH’s quick recovery. Only prayers of devotees around the world and their chanting of the holy name is our hope.

We disciples of Jayapataka Maharaja are very gratefull to GBCs for their kind help and support. Specially HH. Gopala Krishna Maharaj and HH. Radhanatha Swami as also HH Bhakti Charu Swami who are constantly supervising the treatment. Mnay GBC members accompanyed Maharaja to the hospital. Some GBC memebrs like HH. Kavicandra Swami and Virabahu pr. are still here in Mumbai to see the recovery of Maharaj. Iskcon Mumbai, Juhu temple management has extended their topmost help in every aspect. We are very much indebted to Iskcon Mumbai management.

Please pray for Maharaj’s quick recovery so that he can again join with you all to participate actively in his service to Srila Prabhupada and his ISKCON.

(27 Oct - 9.30 a.m. report) Ratnavali dd:

Jayapataka Maharaja’s health is progressing very nicely and the doctors are happy with his improvement. Yesterday the doctor saw him coughing and said it is a good symptom. This means the bodily system has started to function.

A visiting doctor asked Maharaja to first lift the left hand which he did. Not only that, he also articulated all his fingers very well. The doctor then asked him to lift the right hand, he wasn’t able to lift it well. He said some physiotheraphy would be required.

Later Dr. P.P Ashok came and asked Maharaja to lift his legs. Maharaja lifted both the legs and started to move them in the air 3 to 4 times. Maharaja also pointed to the tube in the mouth indicating he wants to speak. Therefore the doctor said that Maharaja is showing excellent responses and that he understands everything 100%.

Maharaja had good eye contact with the doctors the whole time. The doctor gave instruction to the nurses that they could start removing the tubes one by one.

—————————–

(26 Oct - 9.30 p.m. report) Ratnavali dd:

There is a gradual improvement of Maharaja’s consciousness but he is not yet out of danger. Jayapataka Maharaja is able to recognize some people and understand some commands but he is not totally conscious. He still feels drowzy.

Dr. Hegde came at 9.15 pm and said that neurologically Maharaja is improving. BP and Sugar level is under control. The platelets count is 79,000 now and it is gradually increasing which is a good sign.

As per Bhanu Maharaja the next couple of days is not auspicious as New Moon day is approaching. There is a general chance for disease to be aggravated during this time. Therefore Bhakti Purushottama Maharaja requests that devotees continue to pray intensely.

Your humble servant,

(26 Oct - 10.30 a.m. report) Ratnavali dd:

Dr.Syamalal Prabhu from the Bhaktivedanta hospital asked Jayapataka Maharaja to give his right hand and he responded to it. The doctor asked Maharaja to squeeze his hand and Maharaja squeezed his hand. The doctor asked Jayapataka Maharaja to move his legs then he started shaking the legs vigourously.

Even the bed started to shake. Therefore the doctor wanted him to stop and Guru Maharaja immediately stopped. Whenever the doctor speaks to Maharaja he opens his eyes and looks at the doctor.

Jayapataka Maharaja is still in a delicate situation and the hospital has strictly ordered not to disturb him.

(26 Oct - 07 a.m. report) Ratnavali dd:

Dear Devotees, Hare Krsna. Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Revati Raman prabhu, the Temple President of Tirupati, AP, India one of the senior disciples of Jayapataka Maharaja is rendering a very important service for the care and safety of Maharaja in the hospital by the ICU. Today under the supervision of the doctors and nurses he approached Maharaja to the pavitram of Tirupati Balaji Deity.

While tying the pavitram on Maharaja’s hand Revati Raman prabhu spoke, “We love you so much. Every one around the world wants you. They are all praying for you and sending so many emails.”

As Maharaja heard this he opened his eyes looking at Revati Raman prabhu for 2 minutes and raised his left hand pointing to his mouth. The doctors and nurses were amazed and said that Maharaja perfectly understood what Prabhu said and indicated that he was unable to speak because of the tubes in his mouth. This is the most wonderful information for all of us.

Thanks to all the prayers of the devotees. The main doctors will be making soon a decision if the ventilator could be removed.

Your humble servant, Ratnavali dd

(25 Oct - 6.35 p.m. report) Ratnavali dd:

Doctor Hegde, the incharge of ICU Unit said that Guru Maharaja is in a stable condition. They have diagnosed that Guru Maharaja has a chronic liver disease and that could be the cause of the decrease in platelets count.

Previously they were not able to identify the reason for the decrease in platelet count. He also said that there is a good chance of removing the ventilator tomorrow.

(25 Oct - 11.10 a.m. report) Simhesvara dasa:

Received the following update from Dr. Madhavananda of the Bhaktivedanta Hospital who is stationed at the Hinduja Medical Centre: HH Jayapataka Maharaj consciousness is a few percent better than yesterday but not out of danger as yet. His blood pressure and sugar level are under control within desirable range. However his blood platelets are still going down. But medicines are being continued to boost his blood platelets. He is still on the ventilator but there is a likelihood that the ventilator may be taken off in about 1 or 2 days.

—————————–

(24 Oct Evening ) Ratnavali dd:

Just now a neuro surgeon doctor by name Mishra had checked Maharaja’s body and he has given a positive statement saying he is slightly improving, he is responding better to some commands. If further haemorrage didn’t take place or if there is no infection then there is a hope of him coming into good shape.

Doctor Radharaja Murari Prabhu, Braja Hari prabhu (the TP of Mumbai), HH Bhakti Purushottama Swami Maharaja and all the other senior devotees are humbly requesting everyone to stay wherever you are and not crowd the hospital so that Jayapataka Maharaja doesn’t get infected. No devotees are allowed to enter into ICCU.

We are receiving messages from all over the world like China, Russia, Middle East, North America, South America, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, different temples in India that they are doing constant kirtan and chanting for the recovery of Maharaja. We are thankful to everyone and let us keep praying in a positive way for Maharaja to regain consciousness and become healthy.

Dear Devotees,

PAMHO. AGTSG. AGTSP.

This evening (23rd) Dr. Anita Goel from Boston, USA had specially visited the Hinduja hospital to see Guru Maharaja’s situation. She then contacted Dr. P. P. Ashok and Madhavananda prabhu and had arranged for a conference call with a Neurologist in America. Their main concern is to increase the bloodlets of Guru Maharaja so that another haemorrage wouldn’t happen. After the conference call they have already put into enaction. One good news is the blood pressure of Guru Maharaja is reducing now as the haemorrage happens only when the blood pressure is high.

Tomorrow they have invited a best Neurologist doctor from Lilavati hospital to check Guru Maharaja. All devotees should keep intensely praying for Guru Maharaja’s recovery.

The senior devotees like Bhakti Purushottam Maharaja and Braja Hari prabhu they have asked the devotees to be patient and to not bombard the devotees here by your phone calls. You can watch the website jpsoffice. com and mayapur. com for the updates. We will also keep you updated in the JPSO Communications.

We have received information that devotees worldwide are doing various special pujas, yajnas, chanting etc for Guru Maharaja. We thank you all and please keep continuing your prayers.

Your humble servant,

Health situation of HH. Jayapataka swami (From Mumbai at 5.15 pm)

It was found at two places in his head there was internal bleeding. Bleeding has stoped. The place is delicate and doctors cannot do any operation. They are trying to treat by medicine. Till now Maharaja is in unconscious state. Devotees saw one time HH moving his hands and leg. Now it looks like he is sleeping peacefully . Before he was breathing heavily with lot of sound which has stoped now.

Please pray and do some Sankirtana for recovery of His Holiness’s health

Thank you very much. Bhakti Purusottama Swami

Continous Chanting in Mayapur:

Devotees in Mayapur are constantly chanting and kirtan is continously going on in the temple. In the morning, Astottara archana or chanting of 108 names of Lord Nrismhadeva and lamp offering was performed for Guru Maharaja.Though there are some signs of improvement since morning, we request all the devotees to pray continously so that He is back in good health to lead all of us in Preaching mission.

—————————–

Aniruddha prabhu: Positive development in Jayapataka Swami’s condition

Devakinandana Prabhu has just come from the hospital and he reports that Maharaja is showing some signs of improvement. He is now resting. His position is still critical but before taking rest he opened his eyes and moved his arm towards his head. These are positive signs.

Doctors are unable to operate or do more than observe his condition but these movements are encouraging signs of improvement.

Please offer a prayer on Maharaja’s behalf.

—————————–

Sivarama Swami:

I stayed at the hospital from 7-11am. After IC scan and tests the neuro surgeon gave a complete health update.

Maharaja had a stroke and brain bleeding in 2 places. One of the areas of bleeding is the root of the brain, a most sensitive area. A place where surgery cannot take place. The condition is critical, the surgeon’s opinion that Maharaja’s chance for survival slim. It’s in Krsna’s hands, absolutely. Please pray. SRS.

—————————–

Ratnavali devi dasi:

Doctor P.P Ashok has reviewed the case thouroughly there is a haemorrage in the brain stem and therefore it is a critical situation. The brain stem contains all our vital centers of function like breathing, consciousness etc. Therefore a slight increase in Haemorrage can cause a life and death situation.

The doctor has said that anything can go wrong anytime without much notice. If it doesn’t, the process of recovery is very slow and any predictions at this time are not possible. He is already on a ventilator to support his vital function.

The doctors who are handling the case are some of the best in India. The treatment which is going on in Hinduja is internationally the same. Our doctor devotees in Bhaktivedanta hospital are in constant touch with the doctor’s in Hinduja.

—————————–

Aniruddha prabhu:

Latest update from Radhanatha Swami who has just returned from the hospital and spoke to the doctor a few minutes ago.

Jayapataka Swami is in an extremely serious situation after suffering a major stroke. He has just received a large blood transfusion since his own was extremely thin due to medication he has been taking for high blood pressure. The bleeding in the brain stem is in a highly sensitive location with an intricate network of nerves which are connected to almost all parts of the body.

Any further damage could have serious consequences. The doctors are now focused on saving his life. The prognosis is not clear at the moment.

There are three doctors from Bhaktivedanta Hospital with Jayapataka Swami at the moment. A few minutes ago one of them asked Maharaja to squeeze his left hand which he did. This means he is conscious but his condition is still tenuous. He is in a highly risky condition where any further damage will be critical and healing will be slow.

The GBC is offering their prayers of support to His Holiness and his disciples in this difficult time.

—————————–

Aniruddha prabhu:

Bir Krsna Das Goswami just returned from Hinduja Hospital one of the top hospitals in Mumbai with a report to the GBC on Jayapataka Swami’s condition.

Maharaja is in intensive care. He has been in a coma since this morning when he was taken to the hospital from the ISKCON Juhu temple. The results of a scan indicate his heart is good but he has suffered a stroke and has bleeding in two locations in the brain. The most serious is in the brain stem which is very delicate and difficult to operate on. His blood pressure is extremely high.

The specialist’s advice is that Maharaja’s condition is extremely serious. There are some positive signs in that he can move his legs and his eyes respond to stimuli indicating nervous activity. At the same time his condition is extremely critical. Radhanatha Swami, Kavicandra Swami, Sivarama Swami, Bhakti Purusottama Swami and others are in the hospital with him.

The GBC held kirtana this morning on behalf of Jayapataka Swami and asks all devotees around the world to offer prayers on his behalf.

—————————–

Aniruddha prabhu:

I generally don’t like to be the bearer of bad news but in this case I feel obliged to get the word out. I am currently in Mumbai attending the GBC meetings.

It appears that some time last night HH Jayapataka Swami suffered a stroke in his sleep. When his servant tried to wake him this morning he couldn’t rise and appeared to be calling for help. He couldn’t articulate his words.

As I went to mangala-arati I came across the devotees carrying Maharaja down to an ambulance so he could be driven to the Hinduja Hospital.

I just heard from Ramai Swami that his condition is critical. He is in a coma and indications are he has suffered a hemorrhage at the back of his neck. The devotees are awaiting the advice of the specialist who is reviewing his condition as I write.

Sivarama Swami, Radhanatha Swami, Gopala Krsna Goswami and Bhakti-vijnana Swami, Bhakti-caru Swami and Bir Krsna Goswami are with him in the hospital and the most recent report from Sivarama Swami is not good news.

I suggest everyone start offering prayers for such a stalwart preacher and ISKCON general. Let us pray that if Krsna so desires that his great servant be allowed to stay with us to help push on the sankirtan mission for the pleasure of Srila Prabhupada.

Mahaguna devi dasi: My dear Devotee Community, pamho, agtsp.

About 3 hours ago, my dearest GuruMaharaj went unconsicous and had to be rushed to the hospital. He is in intensive care unit in Bombay, India.

In the evening eastern time, HH Jayapataka Swami woke up at around 3:30 a. m. and was calling out to his servant but was unable to speak and then he collapsed. At that moment, he was rushed to the Hindu Jha Hospital in Bombay, India. At the present moment, he is in a coma and is unable to speak but he is breathing. However he is in an unconscous state. His blood pressure and sugar was checked but since he was unconscious he was sent to the ICU because the doctors assume that he suffered a cardiac arrest but they are unsure as the exact cause of his unconsciousness. He is currently in the ICU and the doctors are monitoring him. No one is allowed to see him,

Please please pray for HH Jayapataka Swami. I am requesting that all disciples and wellwishers do a 24 hour kirtan and pray to Lord Narasimhadev for the speedy recovery of a great soul and pure devotee of the Supreme Lord and near and dear servant of Srila Prabhupada.

In the case of brain hemorrhages, the first 72 hours are the critical time. If the physicians are able to prevent the brain from swelling, then with time he may recover, hopefully. It is ultimately in Sri Krishna’s divine will. His Holiness Jayapataka Maharaj is a repository of godly qualities and humility. Indeed, I pray to Srila Prabhupad to embrace the divine person of His Holiness. If it is Sri Krishna’s will, then please allow Maharaj’s fate with us be strong again so that his expression and example of devotional service remain a beacon for his millions of well-wishers. And, if it is Sri Krishna’s desire to take Maharaj to His divine Home, may Sri Krishna protect him, comfort him, and bestow His merciful loving glance upon our Godbrother. Hare Krishna. With hope, Pusta Krishna das

I have fond memories of Jayapataka Maharaj from 1978 and 82. He instructed me to contact all the media for the 1982 Mayapur festival and when a local TV station came to interview him, he froze and whispered in my ear ‘I camera shy’. At the time, it was quite hilarious but eventually he did a brilliant interview.

What impressed me was his humility and total dedication to Prabhupada. Actually, it is because of devotes like him a fallen soul like me is still around and desires to somehow, someway, always serve ISKCON.

Death is certain for all of us. Today or tomorrow, there is no escape for any of us. This tragic event again reminds us that the bodily vessel we are in is fragile and can break down at any moment. Are we ready for death? Do we really understand that the material body is not who we really are? And that it is only a temporary container that carries the soul or life force that is our factual identity?

Now is the time to remember that the self is not the material body but rather an eternal servant of Krishna.

All glorious to Jayapataka Maharaj, from your fallen servant Gauragopala dasa

Over the years, what has impressed me the most is Maharaj’s wonderful humility and total dedication to Srila Prabhupada’s mission to preach the glorious of Lord Caitanya all over the world.

All glorious to Jayapataka Maharaj, yes, a great devotee only wants too please his Spiritual Master and Krishna, and what pleases Krishna the most is encouraging the fallen souls in the material creation to also begin their journey back home, back to Godhead.

I am praying that Krishna will protect H.H Jayapataka Maharaj

Maha Varaha prabhu just informed me that Dr. Ashok in his latest observation of Srila Guru Maharaj (about 3PM) informed that progress is good and chances are very positive for recovery. But he gave the same instruction again “No more visits”. Visitors could pass infections to Srila Guru Maharaj and thus endanger his immune system.

As at 25 October 11.10am

Hare Krishna.
Received the following update from Dr. Madhavananda of the Bhaktivedanta Hospital who is stationed at the Hinduja Medical Centre:

HH Jayapataka Maharaj consciousness is a few percent better than yesterday but not out of danger as yet. His blood pressure and sugar level are under control within desirable range. However his blood platelets are still going down. But medicines are being continued to boost his blood platelets. He is still on the ventilator but there is a likelihood that the ventilator may be taken off in about 1 or2 days.

Dear Bhaktas and especially disciples of His Holiness Jayapataka Maharaj,
Please do not despair. I have just now seen that tracheostomy has been done, and this is a wise decision on the part of his physicians. Here in the San Jose, California area, our pulmonary specialists recommend this relatively early also since it protects the injury to the vocal cords that occurs with prolonged intubation, and it facilitates suctioning of secretions from the airways. Thus, it helps to prevent infections of the lungs or pneumonia which is very dangerous when one is on a ventilator.
The injury to the part of the brain where hemorrhage occurred can play a role in breathing, and so that part of the brain will hopefully recover with time so that our dear Jayapataka Maharaj will recover more and more his capacity to breathe, speak, and interact with his disciples and well-wishers. Please be patient as this may take some time. It may also play a role in wakefulness as well. So, Maharaj resting is part of the injury to that part of the brain.
But, remember, he is the atma within the body. His service is under the internal potency of Sri Krishna, so whatever situation he may be placed in, that is the grace of the Supreme Lord. I have noted in some of the reports that a clicker is being used for Maharaj to chant the Mahamantra internally. There are small tulasi japa malas that have 27 beads. If you can arrange that, and if Maharaj possesses the dexterity to use it, please give him a small tulasi mala to use when he wishes to chant to himself.
I am thinking about my Godbrother frequently in these days, and I am grateful for the updates on his condition. We must be able to see his divine self through this, as he is also feeling the urgency and necessity to take profound shelter of Sri Krishna. Krishna is our dearmost Friend, and so we must believe that all is for the very best. And, I pray too that this unexpected health emergency will bring out the very best in his disciples as well.
Hare Krishna.

Sincerely,

Pusta Krishna das

Messages from Godbrothers of HH Jayapataka Swami

Posted below are messages from HH Jayapataka Maharaj’s godbrothers.(compiled by Suvarna Krsna Lila dd)

HH Radhanath Maharaj (25 October 2008):

“4000 devotees are going to pray in Vrindavan. And in Vrindavan to whichever holy place they go, they will be praying for Jayapataka Maharaj. And they are going to dedicate the whole yatra for HH Jayapataka Maharaj.”
Maharaj also mentioned that he is with all of us (all the disciples).Maharaj instructed the Chowpatty temple that the 24hrs kirtan praying for the recovery of HH Jayapataka Maharaj should continue.

HH Ramai Swami Maharaj

“I really do not know exactly what plans the Supreme Personality Sri Krsna and Srila Prabhupada have for HH Jayapataka Swami. As far as we are concerned, we hope that he recovers and stays with us and gives us his association. And helps push on the preaching all around the world as he has always done. My heart goes to him and my heart goes to all the disciples of Jayapataka Swami. And we are continually praying. I have asked, as a GBC chairman, that some GBCs stay here in Mumbai just to follow the developments as for as his health is concerned. So some are staying on extra, they have changed their timings and everything like that so that four, five or six GBCs will stay on like that. We are feeling positive by the indications given by the doctors there. Of course everything is in Krsna’s hands!! It could improve by His will and be happy.”

HH Sivaram Swami Maharaj

“Hare Krsna! Very often in medical history, there is a thing that doctors say are medically inexplicable, doesn’t make sense to medical science. And that’s because in the ultimate issue it is not the medical science that determines whether someone becomes healthy or unhealthy because they deal with a very immediate cause and effect but as devotees we know that beyond the immediate movement of organs the reaction to some kind of medication, medicine, treatment is the underlying spiritual energy upon which all matter functions. And that spiritual energy is directly under spiritual control, which then subsequently controls the material energy. And our faith in regards to the conditions of HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaj is that in that way, he is in Krsna’s hands and Krsna is the controller. Whatever apparent medical indications areican be overridden by the underlying spiritual potency which directs everything. And spiritual potency to cure and direct the material energy can be invoked by the devotees’ desire. Therefore devotees pray. We pray for the wellbeing of Vaisnavas, we pray that Jayapataka Swami Maharaj may be cured. But we always pray in a certain mood.
Just like Srila Prabhupad taught us to prayi ‘My dear Lord Krsna if you so desire..’. Because we don’t want to voice any type of intention that would appear to be separate from Krsna’s desire. So if it is Krsna’s desire, then we request that ‘You please cure Jayapataka Maharaj’. And the quality of our faith that is parallel and in harmony with Krsna’s desire and quantity of our faith is that we know actually Krsna can do anything. Atheistic people, materialistic people may have a different vision but as Vaisnavas we know that if Krsna wants ‘mukam karoti vacalam, pangum langhayate girim..’, He can make lame people walk across mountains and make dumb people speak and bring any person of any type of sickness and He can make them completely healthy, against so called medical evidence and medical science because Krsna is the ultimate doctor! Krsna is the ultimate mystic and He is the ultimate controller!. So we should have faith in that and we should pray in that way and know that certainly Jayapataka Maharaj is not a victim of material energy but he is directly under Krsna’s hands. He is been in Krsna’s hands all this time and now he is also in Krsna’s hands. So we will pray to Krsna ’so if you want to fulfill the desires of so many disciples, devotees and well wishers of His Divine Grace’. Hare Krsna.”

HG Badrinarayan prabhu

“Jayapataka Maharaj is one of the generals in Lord Caitanya’s army and it is very hard for me to accept that he does not have further duties and battles to win for Krsna. At our meeting yesterday, at the GBC meeting, repeatedly we thought ‘Jayapataka Maharaj would know the answer’. If Jayapataka Maharaj was here… as far as spirit of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, relationships with Gaudiya Math, how to develop Mayapur, Prabhupada’s instructions and vision for the future temple, he is an irreplaceable storehouse of practical experience and transcendental knowledge and an ocean of Prabhupada’s instructions. So just like Nrsimha brahmachari, his mind could not go beyond a certain point on the path I cannot picture going on without our Jayapataka Maharaj. Still Krsna has his plan. We don’t have that vision so we simply fold our hands and pray that whatever Krsna wants may it become manifest and we understand it. Hare Krsna.

HG Anuttama Prabhu

“I had the honor of visiting Jayapataka Maharaj in his hospital room, the day after he was taken to the hospital in the morning. And his color was very good. Obviously he was unconscious and in the hospital he was getting treatment of many different fluids, tubes and things like that. He was in the corner room of the intensive care with windows on both sides. I noticed that sunlight was coming in and sun is always an auspicious and helpful sign. And I spoke into Maharaja’s ear. I understand often times people in this situation, they can still hear and I told him how much the devotees around the world loved him and devotees around the world are praying for him and I told him that I am praying that Krsna restores his full strength and full health so that we can preach together and serve Prabhupada together for many more years. And I told him that we are very grateful for his very sweet nature and his loving compassion mood towards so many devotees all over the world. And I offer my obeisances to all the disciples of HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaj and I pray that Krsna will give them strength in this difficult time and they offer their most sincere prayers to Lord Krsna. Srila Prabhupada, when he had serious health crisis he instructed his disciples to pray ‘My dear Lord Krsna, if you so desire, then please let our spiritual master stay for he has not finished his work’. So ultimately situations like this are in the hands of the Lord. But the signs are good. We are keeping our hope and prayers up and we are praying to Krsna understanding that Krsna has, in the recent years, Prabhupada has called back some of his senior most preachers to help him wherever his mission may be at this time. And that been very painful but we are hoping this time our prayers will be heard by the Lord and he may bless us and allow us to have more of Jayapataka Maharaja’s association in this world for few more years so we can relish his association in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krsna. All my prayers and best wishes are to his disciples and well wishers around the world. May we get the strength in each other’s association and remember this and our appreciation for Maharaj for his love and service.

Hare Krsna!

I emailed Ratnavali dd but got no acknowledgement. I think there must be too much for her absorb and she is naturally distressed. However, Sripad Jayapataka Maharaj will need several things. First, who is making decisions for His Grace. His doctors by now must be very concerned with his nutritional status. This will require a J-Peg, gastric tube to provide liquid nutrition and fluids into the stomach. Maharaj will become dehydrated and starve to death if he is not given nutrition promptly. It has been over one week now. A general surgeon can easily place a tube percutaneously through the abdominal wall into the stomach…it is a routine procedure for them to do. This will provide nourishment and fluid to his body. If he tries to eat, assuming he were sufficiently awake, and if the fluid went into the airway, such aspiration of food and fluid can be fatal. The doctors caring for Jayapataka Maharaj need to address this, and the bhaktas who are making decisions need to agree to this. You must give Jayapataka Maharaj sufficient time to recover brain function.
Secondly, bedsores or pressure sores are a common complication of prolonged bed rest. It is important to prevent these by logrolling Maharaj from side to side and propping him with pillows to prevent prolonged pressure on his back and sacrum/’pelvic area. These are preventable with excellent nursing care. Also, place pillows under Maharaj’s calves to keep pressure off of his heels, another area of potential pressure and skin break down.
Sri Krishna is the Cause of all causes but “ekam yo vidadhati kaman”, he is satisfying our desires for service. I do not expect the bhaktas to know all of these things regarding Maharaj’s care, but you must take advice to avoid hastening an unfavorable outcome. If you give Maharaj’s brain sufficient time to recover, and it will not be overnight, then we may be able to keep him with us. Pusta Krishna das(Paul Dossick, MD)

Yesterday at my hospital, I was discussing the condition of HH Jayapataka Maharaj with one of my colleague neurologists in San Jose, California. We discussed the difficult prognosis of brainstem or pontine hemorrhages. He told me the story of one of his patients who had a similar stoke at age 24. She had two small children. She survived (now 17 years), has seen her children graduate from high school. She regained her ability to breathe and even speak somewhat. She cannot eat, lacking the mechanical control to swallow, and hence she is fed through her gastric tube. But, there is some hope for improvement over time. Her cognitive abilities (higher brain functions) are normal.
The brainstem is the origin of some of the lower cranial nerves, nerves that control swallowing, taste, tongue control (hence speaking may be difficult). Thus, we may have a Jayapataka Maharaj who, if he recovers, will have significant physical disabilities, possibly confined to wheelchair, not be able to swallow, but who is able to think normally. This is a successful outcome with such stokes, if not miraculous in itself. We must be able to conceive of His Holiness as the Jiva soul who has and will continue to serve Sri Sri Guru Gauranga with whatever is in his hands. We have experience of severely disabled people who have performed glorious service to Krishna. Our friend Radhanath Prabhu of San Diego who passed away from pneumonia, having lived with ankylosing spondylitis for over 25 years, performed book distribution from his wheelchair, preached, started newsletters, etc. and was an inspiring and always positive and hopeful example of vaishnavism. His faith in Srila Prabhupad was exemplary. There is one deaf woman in Santa Cruz who is a happy vaishnava.
Thus, we must be prepared to re-define what we knew of the vibrant physical service of Jayapataka Maharaj, and WELCOME him to serve in whatever capacity. In fact, we should be happy to serve him, as he is now in need of so much help, and may continue to need care into the future, if Krishna wills him to remain here with us. It is ok to be physically disabled and to continue the service of Sri Gurudeva as possible. Whatever capacity Krishna gives one, that can be dovetailed in the service of the Lord. It is a scenario that will be repeated again and again, and bhaktas must be able to accept the prasad of Sri Krishna. Hare Krishna…Pusta Krishna das
