Bh Tim Mc Evitt: Ten devotees in Ireland have been cooperating with a UK and US based company over the past three years. Around Christmas time the company sells seasonal products in Shopping Centres and Malls. The experience lasts about 11 weeks and the ‘operator’ makes 10% of the total income into the till. So if your shop makes 100,000 pounds sterling, you make 10K sterling during this time. The operator is a self-employed business person, so both legally and in practise you are not actually employed by this company. Once you follow basic good behavior (as devotees do!) they leave you to your own devices.
Basically you are managing and manning your shop in the lead up to Christmas and for
2 to 3 weeks after the 25th, during the Sales. During the quieter times in the morning you can stick a Krishna Book on the counter and have a read. Later on in the day it’s busier and you need to tidy the shelves and deal with customers. As you sell seasonal products the closer it gets to the big day (Christmas), the busier the shop gets. In between dealing with people when you’re on the till, you are also dealing with the paper-work of the business. The company supplies all the products and all the fixtures and fittings… they just need reasonable decent people to look after the shops. You can work 7 days a week, or you can employ people yourself also, but that comes out of your percentage. The devotees in Ireland made 9 to 16K euro each (profit) last Christmas, depending on the size and location of the shop. There are 15 vacancies in the UK this coming Christmas, mostly in the South of England. The people in the company are polite and pleasant. One of their key people even came on one of our retreats on Inis Rath Island last season and took part in yoga, kirtan and japa, and bought chanting beads and a Srila Prabhupada book just before she left.
In December you actually do work long hard hours to get the money you’re getting, so it’s not something that’s some easy scheme to make a few bob. It’s doable by one person, but in 95% of cases you’ll need help from others, at least for some things. It’s an ideal thing for a husband and wife team. As in my case, it’s a convenient opportunity for people who had lived in a temple and have recently begun working ‘outside’! Even if you don’t live in England it may be worth investigating i. e. stay in local hostels. If you’d like to find out more please email me.
N. B. You need to act write now, if you’re interested. They normally know who is manning the shops by or before September.
