Dear Maharajas and Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

In honor of World Holy Name Week, ISKCON Pune had set a goal for their Japathon: 1 Billion Names!

Every evening, in front of the temple a Japathon table was set up with beads, pledge forms, and score cards. A devotee was there at the table to encourage people to participate in the Japathon, teach them to chant, and answer their questions.

Yesterday, on Sunday, at the conclusion of the Japathon, the congregation and brahmacharis submitted their personal score cards. Everyone who submitted their card got a free delux Maha Mantra sticker as a gift.

The score cards are still being tallied, but it looks like yes, the goal of
1 Billion Names has been reached.

The first cards submitted were from a husband and wife who both chanted around 64 rounds a day during the Japathon.

This morning I was met by Rajshekhar Prabhu, who is assisting in compiling the Japathon scores of ISKCON Pune.

Rajshekhar Prabhu reported that during the Japathon, 300 – 400 new people have started chanting on beads (1-5 rnds).

On Sunday, two cards received reporting 1200 rounds of japa chanted in 14 days. That is around 85 rounds per day.

40 to 50 cards were above 800 rounds. That is more than 55 rounds per day.

More than 100 people increased their rounds and became 16 rounders. They were chanting 4, 5. 8 rounds, and many of them would now like to continue.

I personally met a group of kids around 7 or 8 years old. They boosted their japa from 7 to 10 rounds during the japathon.

One of the brahmachari pujaris was chanting his 16 rounds, plus an additional 50 rounds per day for the Japathon (66). He told me his experience was that he maintained his intense service schedule and reduced his sleep in order to complete his increased vow during the Japathon. He was very happy with the experience, and confided in me that he felt some increased taste for the chanting of the Holy Names.

Some devotees requested a 1 month Japathon, next year.

“Every day 400 – 500 people visit the temple, including 100 new people”, Rajshekhar Prabhu explained.

“If we continue promoting our japathon for 1 month, many new people will take up the chanting.”

He wanted me to get his realization across that this japathon is a powerful means of both spreading Krishna consciousness to new people as well as promoting purity in our movement.

He exclaimed, “This Japathon should be a Marathon all over the world!”

During our daily World Holy Name Week street Harinama Processions, we engaged in book distribution, and gave out invitation cards to our temple. Now many of those people who received the invitation cards and BTGs on the street are coming here and visiting the temple and appreciating ISKCON.

We will get exact statistics on the Japathon in Pune as all the cards are tallied within a few days.
