The process of celibacy as given to us by Srila Prabhupada is rather simple

Hare Krsna!

I have been studying all the helpful notes presented here. Getting absolute control of the potential for sex desire appears to be the goal.

Celibacy should be simple, but I’m afraid that some spiritual aspirants are up against some issues in today’s modern society.

This is not for those who are already married. But, Srila Prabhupada did dissuade male devotees from marrying a woman who was older. The recommendation was that the man should be at least five years older than the woman. The problem here could be the potential for some unnatural emotions regarding sexuality between the couple. Those who are already married like this may have to be careful about associating with each other so as not to be too much involved in sex that may be contrary to the principles of Vaisnavism. But, generally, it may be difficult for some couples to realize a natural control of their sexuality. Educational programs may help.

We may have some karma in the lower modes from previous lives. It is possible to attract the birth of a human being who has better karma through the Garbhadana Samskara. But, otherwise, there is a need for Krsna conscious programming that over-rides any bad karma from previous lives.

The norm in ancient Vedic culture is for the child of five to move into the house of the Gurukula. Good Krsna conscious programming early in life can help when the child becomes an adult. Adults have the inner child of childhood conditioning as well as the inner child of karma from previous lives. The adult that did not get very good Krsna conscious programming early in life, must now use Krsna conscious programming to over-ride any inclination to maha-maya in their adult life.

The majority of society today is supportive of illicit sex it seems. We must be strong enough not to be bewildered by this modern trend. At the same time we can now very easily access the “adult book store” through the internet. For some it is like an alcoholic having access to alcohol with a few clicks of the mouse.

Even Lord Krsna has clearly indicated that lust is a primary obstacle on the path of Bhakti Yoga. Bhagavad Gita 3.37

We must surrender to a Guru and other advanced devotees as much as possible. In the extreme we should practically become a slave to our Guru. The guiding light in this regard is the ancient tradition of the absolute surrender the brahmacaris would demonstrate towards their Guru. But, we should at least surrender to the Guru in his Vani form as he may appear with the Vani of other pure devotees in the authorized Vaisnava Sastra.

See: (Brahmacarya in Krsna Consciousness –
Bhakti Vikas Swami; BIKC 11: Training)

In the beginning work is said to be the means. The idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Srila Prabhupada often said don’t be idle. Try to choose a career according to our Varna and Karmic inclinations. In a situation of employment try to choose work that is not too difficult on our Krsna consciousness and offer the results of our work to Krsna. If you have hopes of being a more full-time preacher, then work part-time and study to be a preacher or move into a Hare Krsna commune if you believe you are qualified. To accept a wife means having one or more children and offering reasonable shelter and living facilities for them. Therefore, we should approach someone for marriage with this in mind and with this promise as well as a vow.

The beginning of Sadhana-Bhakti in Bhakti Yoga is to remember Krsna somehow or other. Keep trying to find ways to remember Krsna.

“This verse is a quotation from the Padma Purana. There are many regulative principles in the sastras and directions given by the spiritual master. These regulative principles should act as servants of the basic principle-that is, one should always remember Krsna and never forget Him.” Madhya 22.113, Purport by Srila Prabhupada

Chanting the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra is recommended and considered the ideal method of always remembering Krsna.

harer nama harer nama
harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha
[Cc. Adi 17.21]

If we are able to then study the Sastra using Vedabase software and other types of media. There are many helpful notes in the Sastra.

Hare Krsna!

Thanks! I hope that I am not stepping outside the topic of this thread too much. There are just so many sastra passages that are helpful in regards to this topic. Perhaps sex problems could be discussed on this bulletin board. I have selected a few interesting passages below.

[The word anta-gatam means "finished." One can engage in devotional service if one has finished with his sinful life. Who can finish with sinful life? Those who engage in pious activities. One must have activities, and if one engages in pious activities one's sinful activities will naturally vanish. On one side, one should voluntarily try to break the pillars of sinful life, and on another side one must engage himself in pious life.]
TQK 13: The Vital Force of the Universe

“One should work hard and worship the Supreme Lord by the fruits of one’s hard labor for existence, and that should be the motto of life. One should be careful to execute occupational service with faith in God in the proper way, and that will lead one gradually on the progressive march back to Godhead.”
SB 1.2.27, Purport by Srila Prabhupada

I have come to believe there are three types of inner child. All sex desire must have to do with the inner child. The first inner child we encounter is that developed during our childhood. The second inner child is conditioning from previous lives. The third inner child is our immortal soul which is child of God. There is a need for counter-programming if we find ourselves prone to any kind of sinful activity.

With modern technology it may seem that we can enjoy so much illicit sex. But, one funny thing about illicit sex is that this so-called pleasure is available not just to animals, but to residents of so many different hellish conditions. With sexual gratification there may be hellish existences where the fear and pain are unbearable. With so many artificial amenities we are temporarily protected from these hellish existences.

Thanks Prabhu!

I ran across this passage in the Teachings of Queen Kunti.

“If one takes to Krsna consciousness, in the beginning there will be many disturbances caused by Mäyä, the material energy of illusion. Mäyä will test us to see how firmly we are fixed in Krsna consciousness. Because she is also an agent of Krsna, she does not allow anyone the freedom to disturb Krsna. Therefore she tests very rigidly to see whether we have taken to Krsna consciousness to disturb Krsna or are actually serious. That is Maya’s business. So in the beginning there will be tests by Mäyä, and we shall feel so many disturbances while making progress in Krsna consciousness. But if we follow the rules and regulations and chant regularly as prescribed, then we shall remain steady. If we neglect these principles, Mäyä will capture us immediately. Mäyä is always ready. We are in the ocean, and at any moment we may be disturbed. Therefore one who is not disturbed at all is called paramahamsa.”
Teachings of Queen Kunti
TQK 3: The Most Intelligent Woman

We can think of so many ways of describing it, but either we turn to Krsna or we turn to Maya. We are only interested in Vaikuntha liberation and higher.

The Brahmacari books tend to suggest some very serious if not extreme standards. These books can be found on the Maha Vedabase. Most should get inspiration about controlling sex desire by studying these Brahmacari books even if they cannot surrender to a Hare Krsna commune for life.

But, the intelligence must be purified of any inclination to turn to maha-maya in any way. The intelligence must completely turn to Krsna. When our intelligence is turned to Krsna then our intelligence is actually intelligence.

“Therefore it is a rigid principle in every temple of our Krsna consciousness movement that there must be a daily class for hearing and chanting. Our movement is meant for training spiritual leaders, but without hearing and chanting it is impossible to become a leader.”
TQK 5: The Vision of Lotuses

This is the note that can get over-looked in Hare Krsna centers where there are so many services needed. The devotees need plenty of opportunity to drill on the scientific details offered in the Sastra.

I believe that controlling all sex desire is a very serious concern deserving all kinds of focus. Some of our greatest leaders in ISKCON have encountered sex desire issues.

I’m afraid I have had to challenge this whole issue. I have started and have been maintaining some related free forums for a number of years. All these forums are censored and moderated for the protection of the subscribers. I can send you more information or perhaps the moderators will allow me to post web addresses regarding this program.

Apparently, at the root of the homosexuality issue is the control of sex desire. It is probably simply due to sex desire that the whole complex of issues regarding homosex has arisen. If we can completely understand and correct all sex desire problems then this should uproot all problems with homosexuality, illicit sex, and the issues of sex in marriage.

Ultimately, controlling all sex desire is one in Bhakti Yoga. And, we see that already Bhakti Yoga engagements have already been recommended. But, in today’s society we cannot take any chances. And, some are involved in engagements or employment that exposes them to temptations.

Of course, we would like to be engaged in Bhakti Yoga 100%. But, many people are still learning the Hare Krsna belief system or may have little or no knowledge of Krsna consciousness. What a lot of people have turned to over the centuries is hard work and prayer to overcome all sex desire. And, we basically see this in the Hare Krsna movement where hard work and prayer is required.

In Krsna consciousness there is feasting, but we know there can be ill side effects from feasting if we are not careful. Similarly, in Krsna consciousness there is a literal feast on transcendental philosophy, but there can be side effects from so much philosophy. In Krsna consciousness we can chant and dance unlimitedly, but will our minds remain free from all other notions and desires?

Perhaps we just need to be engrossed in all three of the above-mentioned items. We should only eat Krsna prasadam, drill on the philosophy of Krsna consciousness, and always chant and dance in ecstasy.

As a teenager I was initially moved by the “Kung Fu” TV show. I was naive to historical notes and whatever private problems Mr. Carradine may have had. I ran across a couple of movies by Mr. Carradine that were kind of raunchy. The death race movie was particularly bad at least in that it suggested too much violence.

Perhaps he did not fully understand the Krsna Conscious Yoga methods on how to control Kama, Krodha, and Lobha. Was he confused in some other way?

Otherwise, we desire the mercy of the Lord upon his soul that he will get better opportunity for spiritual advancement in Krsna consciousness.

I visited San Francisco about 15 years ago and we had Harinama around old Haight-Ashbury. I sensed a need for preaching in that area like the old days.

Yes, this is very nice that you are trying to develop a preaching center. I wish that I was more qualified to help you. I am presently tied down for different reasons. And, the devotees in New Orleans apparently need my help sometimes.

Of course, there is the old way, the ancient way, and that is Hari Nama collecting some donations and inviting people to participate in the programs at the preaching centers. Then, there is dealing with issues of Varnasrama for those who are not ready for full time preaching.

When Srila Prabhupada opened up the new “Matchless Gifts” he simply led Hari Nama and educational programs. He apparently instructed and mentored people day and night. More and more people got convinced. Similarly, perhaps the full-time preachers could also give instruction and guidance day and night.

Urban farming and self-sufficiency

Please accept my humble obeisances!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada
and all pure devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead!

I believe Urban Gardening and Farming is a great idea. Here in New Orleans the devotees from New Orleans ISKCON try to grow some things in what little ground space they have around the Temple at 2936 Esplanade in New Orleans. They also commute to the New Talavan Farm in Mississippi to manage a small piece of ground set aside specifically for New Orleans ISKCON. But, the land in Mississippi will need constant maintenance. They are short-handed and lacking funds in this regard. There is a great need for development at the New Talavan Farm and so it is difficult to consider another alternative. Another alternative would be to purchase suburban land closer to the New Orleans Temple for growing flowers and vegetables. Otherwise, it would seem up to the individual to decide how much they can afford regarding gardening and farming. Isn’t home-grown food a better offering at the feet of Lord Krsna?

Society is putting so much pressure on devotees to surrender to the system. The system today is still predominantly punching a clock and a 40 hour work week. The more money we need the more we are faced with having to accept 40 hour work week and even employment that more or less involves the prohibited activities. This is difficult for young people who may be trying to raise a family. But, it may be possible to own some inexpensive property even near urban areas and hold a part-time job to take care of living expenses. Otherwise, there is simply collecting some donations during Hari Nama to possibly pay the bills.

Annual Varnasrama Seminar “Fulfilling Varnasrama Mission” – 2009 at Sridham Mayapur

Completion of last message posting:

The whole idea of agricultural self-sufficiency is nonprofit in nature. Of course, some kind of marketing program could come out of agrarian self-sufficiency just as the Amish sell their products. But, there are many concerns in making agrarian self-sufficiency happen. In the beginning devotees may not be prepared to live without any and all machinery and artificial amenities. This is going on at New Talavan. They live with certain austerities and inconveniences, but they do turn to machines and artificial amenities. But, we would need a plan of advancement to more and more freedom from machines and artificial amenities in agricultural self-sufficiency.

Of course, Srila Prabhupada was trying all kinds of ways to have everyone fully engaged in Sadhana Bhakti. We have to find some way to maintain basic concerns for the body, the family, country and the world and still keep up with at least minimum standards in Sadhana Bhakti. Those who are spiritually advanced may try to make their career more specifically concerns for full time Sadhana Bhakti.

In conclusion of this message, we need to work out our ideology with ourselves, within ISKCON, and for the whole world. Then, there should be motivation, inspiration, and greater potential for successful plans.

Hare Krsna!
Thanks!

The four legs of Dharma are godly virtues such as self-control, education, mercy, and charity. Apparently, the foundation of Dharma regards all godly virtues. We see so many godly virtues mentioned in the authorized Vaisnava teachings. The twenty-six qualities of a devotee is suggesting godly virtues. Just mentioning the Gita there is Bhagavad-Gita 13.8-12.

Therefore, these godly virtues are sought, developed and maintained throughout our understanding of both Varna and Asrama. Varna is regarding career or employment. Choice of career begins as early as possible. Educated parents carefully ascertain the exact birth time of their child and then an accurate Natal Astrological chart is helpful to get some idea of a child’s inclinations regarding employment. A child could also be tested regularly, at least every year, to discern their potential, aptitude, and inclinations regarding employment and career. If all goes well a young person is convinced about their career before turning eighteen years of age.

Those who did not get too much of the methods mentioned above may have trouble deciding on a career, their Varna. They may have potential that won’t come out without special training and testing programs. It would probably help for people like this to research at libraries and get help from colleges to make a better discernment regarding their Varna or career.

The other issue in this regard is discerning a devotees Varna while living in a ISKCON Hare Krsna commune. Apparently, the management of an ISKCON commune should make every effort to give all necessary direction to devotees surrendered to an ISKCON commune.

We can choose a for-profit career or a nonprofit career. A nonprofit career does not have to be completely within the ISKCON center confines. However, there is much about an ISKCON commune that is normally nonprofit in nature. If a devotee wants to become more and more advanced as a preacher then that is more or less a brahminical path. But, those who choose this path of preaching must understand austerities they will have to endure.

The whole idea of agricultural self-sufficiency is nonprofit in nature. Of course, some kind of marketing program could come out of agrarian self-sufficiency just as the Amish sell their products. But, there are many concerns in making agrarian self-sufficiency happen. In the beginning devotees may not be prepared to live without any and all machinery…

It is wonderful to see the collaborative effort! It would seem wise to be wary of political issues.

The association of the term “Varnasrama” has been associated with Agrarian Self-sufficiency since we have learned that Vedic culture is predominantly Agrarian. Modern industry can be a hazard to the environment, the creatures of the earth, the animals, and human beings as well. Modern industy can be a hazard to employees of industry as well as people living near industrial areas. Government regulation and restriction has been known to be lacking in regards to industry.

Otherwise, it is only those interested in Grhastha life who are normally concerned about career other than simply Sadhana Bhakti. Some people have trouble deciding on a career.

Perhaps you could start your own school not so far from your farm. That is what Srila Prabhupada might as well have been doing. When Srila Prabhupada set up at “Matchless Gifts” he apparently was giving class and guidance day and night. That is how people got convinced. Perhaps regular Hari Nama would turn up some followers and donations.

If not, have you tried cab driving over house painting? Painting is a good business idea. Perhaps some devotees would like to make a business out of something like house painting. There is also yard work which might be compatible with your farm work. Otherwise, a devotee business is a good idea in itself. Some devotees would like to be paying their Social Security tax so that they might have some insurance for retirement. In other circumstances devotees might prefer part-time jobs so that they can focus more on devotional programs.

I have been driving taxi in New Orleans for over four years. I am meeting people all over town. Due to taxi regulations I have trouble talking to people about anything related to Krsna. But, the Taxi bureau does allow me to make flyers available to customers in my cab. There are health and safety hazards to be faced with the cab business. Experience pays off in dealing with health and safety hazards. Tour Guide work might also be a workable idea.

Another idea is to take noncredit classes at these area schools. Perhaps this will be a way to talk to people about what you are trying to do.

I wish I could do more to personally help you with your project. You are not far from New Orleans. I don’t know if my presence there would be of much use to you. But, I will keep you in mind.

The Frog in the Cesspool

A grhastha should be very affectionate toward lower animals……..

“A grhastha should be very much affectionate toward lower animals, birds and bees, treating them exactly like his own children. A grhastha should not indulge in killing animals or birds for sense gratification. He should provide the necessities of life even to the dogs and the lowest creatures and should not exploit others for sense gratification. Factually, according to the instructions of Srimad-Bhagavatam, every grhastha is a great communist who provides the means of living for everyone. Whatever a grhastha may possess he should equally distribute to all living entities, without discrimination. The best process is to distribute prasada.”
SB 7.14: Summary

Hare Krsna Prabhu!

Krsna, the personification of the Supreme Being’s infinite ambrosial love, loves all entities including an insignificant frog. Perhaps that frog was Brahmaji countless yuga-cycles ago. But, it is always about a relationship between all entities and all things. The only reason for the creation of anything, by the Supreme Being, is for the sake of relationships. The Supreme Being is just like the mountain spring that is pure and uncontaminated. From the one Supreme Being flows all existence.

My Daughter, My Teacher

Hare Krsna!
PAMHO AGTSP

Despite so many internet concerns to tend to I could not help but be captivated by your message (despite its length). I cannot claim to be a professional when it comes to literature, but it seems your written presentation here is on the level of prose.

My youngest brother, Joseph, is considered profoundly retarded and has only spoken a few words in his life, such as “Mom”. My Dad tried to take care of him, but it really was too much for him. Joseph has been living in a special home since my Dad became ill and eventually left us. Luckily Joseph rarely has fits as you have described. He just can’t take care of himself at all. He knows how to put food in his mouth and be led around.

Anyway, the passage that comes to mind is found in the Bhagavad Gita As It Is.:

“O best among the Bharatas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me-the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.”
Bhagavad Gita As It Is 7.16

It is certainly devout of your family to continue the struggle despite the severity of the circumstances. If Srila Haridasa had to suffer stoning, Lord Jesus suffered crucifixion, and Srila Prabhupada suffering strokes; then I guess we should not be too shocked when we might have to endure difficulties such as you have described.

I believe we need to keep working on improving our relationship with God, the Supreme Being. The more we can improve our relationship with God, the more we should come under His protection, the protection of Yoga-maya. How else could Arjuna have gotten through the battle of Kuruksetra?

Transforming Your Workplace into the Spiritual World

Please accept my humble obeisances!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada
and all pure devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead!

The world should thank you for your intensive effort to clarify employment issues for devotees. Of course, the issues and concerns regarding employment could expand to include so many thousands of pages. But, you have really put a dent in the whole issue.

Perhaps we could see work as the first step in spiritual advancement.

“For one who is a neophyte in the eightfold yoga system, work is said to be the means; and for one who is already elevated in yoga, cessation of all material activities is said to be the means.” Bhagavad Gita 6.3

Of course, Astanga Yoga must somehow be assimilated into Bhakti Yoga in this age of Kali. But, work is the first step to re-awakening our eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Work or perhaps we could say employment, career, varna, or possibly even “caste” is mentioned by Lord Krsna Himself in the following passage.

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Uddhava, because I desire that human beings may achieve perfection, I have presented three paths of advancement-the path of knowledge, the path of work and the path of devotion. Besides these three there is absolutely no other means of elevation.”
SB 11.20.6

Some jobs are rather difficult on devotees. I drove a taxi for over four years until I developed blood clots in my leg. I had to handle meat products when picking up customers at the grocery. I had prostitutes, pimps, and other sex workers in my cab. Too often my customers were drunk and screaming louder than freight trains. I struggled to keep my mind refreshed with the philosophy of Krsna consciousness. Sometimes, especially after visiting the Hare Krsna center, I would at least temporarily have a more spiritual consciousness that had an apparent affect on my customers. But, generally I wished to God that I had an employment situation that was more helpful to my Krsna consciousness.

A number of devotees in New Orleans now drive taxi. I don’t know how they are doing. But, it does take a lot of work to remain really Krsna conscious driving a taxi. Otherwise, there are a number of thoughts come to mind about all this, but have run out of room here.

Subtle sex; the scourge of the advancing sadhaka

(In continuation from the last post….)

Devotion begins with fear of God. Fear advances to recognition of the Absolute Truth. This recognition of the Absolute Truth turns into “surrender”.

“Some scholars recommend that knowledge and renunciation are important factors for elevating oneself to devotional service. But actually that is not a fact. Actually, the cultivation of knowledge or renunciation, which are favorable for achieving a footing in Krsna consciousness, may be accepted in the beginning, but ultimately they may also come to be rejected, for devotional service is dependent on nothing other than the sentiment or desire for such service. It requires nothing more than sincerity.”
Nectar of Devotion 14
by Srila Prabhupada

The surrender then turns into sincerity and devotion.

Actually it is funny to note that we want the association of someone for sex not just for external fulfillments of the mind and body. We apparently want someone close to us to satisfy a deep rooted longing which probably comes from the platform of our eternal spirit soul. The only problem is we are turning to the wrong thing to satisfy this need to end our condition of loneliness. But, when we turn to Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His association ends all our problems with feeling lonely.

Perhaps some are so intellectually advanced and blessed with faith that they can actually jump over Varnasrama Dharma and even Transcendental Knowledge.

Srimad Bhagavatam 11.20.6

I believe we can discern from this that the first step is the path of work. That must be Varnasrama Dharma. When we can surmise that our state of being is lacking in faith and intelligence then we must fall back on “hands on” experience. When we have a paying job we get to know our job really well if we expect to even just keep it. In a place of employment we have routines and responsibilities that does not allow very much room for even subtle sex. In other words, just employment normally forces us to be strict with ourselves in regards to sex.

Through employment we can set aside money for higher education to improve our employment situation. We may want to improve our employment situation for the sake of our Krsna consciousness. We can also utilize earnings for our Krsna consciousness more directly by purchasing educational materials and getting the association of advanced devotees.

With time and application we may be ready for phase two. That is mentioned by Lord Sri Krsna. That is the path of knowledge. Of course, jnana is mentioned and we know that this has to do with Sankhya also. However, we know that all this philosophical and spiritual knowledge becomes one in transcendental knowledge. Ultimately we have simply the science of Krsna consciousness.

If we have been successful with these two steps of work and knowledge then we should have achieved bodily, mental and intellectual absorption. We are now getting at the root of our lust.

“The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this lust. Through them lust covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him.”
Bhagavad Gita As It Is 3.40

And just how deep does our intelligence go? Who can fathom? That is why we must achieve the next level. That is the path of devotion.

Devotion begins with fear of God. Fear advances to recognition of the Absolute Truth. This recognition of the Absolute Truth turns into “surrender”.

Face to face with death

Hare Krsna!

PAMHO AGTSP!

This is certainly a brave situation. It is so unfortunate these things have to go on in the world. Hopefully your prayers did some good and perhaps the soldier appreciated your efforts. Krsna is all-cognizant so He must always be aware of our prayers. There apparently was no chaplain present and you apparently served in that role.

God must have a special plan to have material nature and human society arranged like this. Therefore, we should not blame God for the difficulties we may encounter. We need to remember that our perception of things may not be accurate. It is a challenge of our human intelligence to conceive of how God Himself perceives things.

Some people may not understand the Krsna concept of God. There is much work to be done to establish a crystal-clear interfaith dialogue. Perhaps this is something behind these wars. In the mean time we need to act according to our heart with faith and sincerity as you have demonstrated.

HARE RAMA HARE RAMA
RAMA RAMA HARE HARE

“The holy name of Krsna is transcendentally blissful. It bestows all spiritual benedictions, for it is Krsna Himself, the reservoir of all pleasure. Krsna’s name is complete, and it is the form of all transcendental mellows. It is not a material name under any condition, and it is no less powerful than Krsna Himself. Since Krsna’s name is not contaminated by the material qualities, there is no question of its being involved with maya. Krsna’s name is always liberated and spiritual; it is never conditioned by the laws of material nature. This is because the name of Krsna and Krsna Himself are identical. -Padma Purana”

Sankirtana Nectar in the Army

Hare Krsna Mataji!

PAMHO AGTSP

That is wonderful you are making progress with them. I was not so successful thirty years ago.

My dad had served in the Army during WWII and I felt some inclination in this regard. But, there were other factors.

I would suggest getting training when and if you can to improve your situation.

The Meaning of Enthusiasm and Its Possible Misuse

Going by the title of your article –

“The Meaning of Enthusiasm and Its Possible Misuse ”

I feel moved to present the Etymology Dictionary explanation regarding the history of this word or term.

enthusiasm
1603, from M.Fr. enthousiasme, from Gk. enthousiasmos, from enthousiazein “be inspired,” from entheos “inspired, possessed by a god,” from en- “in” + theos “god” (see Thea). Acquired a derogatory sense of “excessive religious emotion” (1660) under the Puritans; generalized sense of “fervor, zeal” (the main modern sense) is first recorded 1716. Enthusiastic in the modern sense is from 1764. Earlier derogatory sense especially seems to have colored modern sense of enthusiast (1764). Enthuse is an 1827 back-formation.

If we believe the origins that indicate “possessed by a god” is referring to a mythical “unreal” god then of course, we may wonder at the current utilization of this term “enthusiasm”. However, we could contemplate that “god” could be referring to a demigod which is an acceptable understanding in Vedic culture.

In employment knowledge eventually becomes realized knowledge. Then in employment we act with greater and greater certainty due to having achieved higher and higher states of realized knowledge. Similarly, as we develop our knowledge of Krsna consciousness we act with greater and greater certainty in regards to the execution of the nine processes of devotion beginning with Sravanam, Kirtanam, Visnu, Smaranam.

We gain knowledge of Krsna consciousness through Guru, Sastra and Sadhu. Then, there is simply Guru and Krsna. And finally, there is simply guidance from Caitya Guru, the Lord in the heart, as we chant the Hare Krsna maha mantra and engage in the other nine processes of devotion.

Therefore, as we achieve guidance from Caitya Guru, the Lord in the heart, the more our enthusiasm is on the first class platform. This is due to our eventually getting all enthusiasm directly from the Lord in the heart.

In the beginning enthusiasm begins through developing expertise in employment. We then try to utilize whatever we earn from work, as much as possible, towards our Krsna consciousness. We utilize these designated funds to get the sanga of Guru, Sastra and Sadhu. And eventually it is simply the nine processes of devotion culminating in the achievement of direct guidance from Caitya Guru. Then, therefore, we would then be “enthused” by “God” within.

Does Sex Attraction Bring People to Krishna?

Hare Krsna!

Please accept my humble obeisances!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada and all pure Vaisnava devotees of the Lord!

I would like to comment on this. I do not wish to offend anyone or speak out of place.

I personally believe that modern music with a Krsna conscious theme might be acceptable for some kind of performance. But, that might also depend on time and circumstance. However, the “rasa-lila” is a high risk performance to undertake. It would probably be best to get authorization from the local Temple authorities if not GBC before proceeding with a production like this.

Again I would say this is high-risk. These ladies or whomever is in charge may need help to understand some better way to present Harinam. This is one charge against Krsna consciousness that might be overlooked. Materialistics like to point out any moral discrepancy in Krsna consciousness and probably due to their lack of understanding Lord Krsna’s pastimes. It seems too easy to let our guard down.

My belief is that these ways you mention are the least effective way to spread Lord Caitanya’s message at least in comparison to other types of direct Krsna conscious presentations. The young ladies involved and those in charge may not realize the seriousness of how we present Krsna consciousness. They may not fully understand how we are to take the Rasa dance seriously.

There is a passage about the “meat” comment I would like to add.

[Hansaduta and I were quite amazed to hear this. We must have looked a little shocked because Prabhupada reassured us, "We will never serve meat. But the idea is that if visitors feel too much inconvenience from our rules, then arrangement can be made for tea or coffee, or even betel or bidi. Not exactly in the guest house, but some kind of shop in the front of the Gurukula building where they can get these things. We can even bring them tea into the guest house if need be. But we want that people will come. We want to give them the opportunity for spiritual life, and therefore we have temple and guest house combined."]

Death Penalty: A Potential PR Nightmare?

I have found this passage in the purports of Srila Prabhupada.

“Although the justice of the peace awards capital punishment to a person condemned for murder, the justice of the peace cannot be blamed, because he orders violence to another person according to the codes of justice. In Manu-samhita, the lawbook for mankind, it is supported that a murderer should be condemned to death so that in his next life he will not have to suffer for the great sin he has committed. Therefore, the king’s punishment of hanging a murderer is actually beneficial. ”
Bhagavad Gita As It Is 2.21, Purport by Srila Prabhupada

Wouldn’t someone receiving the death penalty get a better birth in their next life?

I don’t know of torture being authorized by sastra at any time.

Another question is guilt. Is there adequate proof that someone committed a crime such as murder?

If the death penalty is to be passed, then does the prisoner have sufficient opportunity and facility to get themselves right with God before the end?

Dealing with criminals is normally the business of the government. According to what Srila Prabhupada is stating, the government has the right to sentence a prisoner to the death penalty if it is proven they are guilty of murder.

Of course, those in the holy order may want to forgive everyone even the murderer.

Establishing VAD Universities

Hare Krsna!
PAMHO AGTSP

What will be the curriculum?

Of course, some work would have to be done to deal with any maya in text books. Eventually text books could be completely rewritten in accordance with Varnasrama Dharma, Bhagavat Dharma, and Krsna consciousness. There are text books and educational materials for all branches of knowledge.

Who will make up the faculty?

Those who have proven advanced in understanding the principles of Dharma in Krsna consciousness as well as expertise in a particular field of study.

What will they do different from other existing educational institutions?

Initially there is a need for all orders, all career types to fully understand the four legs of Dharma which are godly virtues such as cleanliness, self-control, temperance, honesty, education, charity, and mercy. In other words, some may need special training program just to understand these principles and then how to make them happen at home, at school and at work. Otherwise, the idea is to follow these godly virtues at school and in employment. Ultimately, these godly virtues result in devotion and surrender to Guru, Sastra, Sadhu and Krsna.

Therefore, even the ditch digger and the janitor learn sufficient understanding of Dharma principles to maintain these godly virtues in all these endeavors. And, so on up the ladder we see the other crafts peoples, service workers, financial management, lawyers, law enforcement, teachers, priests. They all need to learn how to develop and maintain the four legs of Dharma.

Even the ditch diggers and garbage collectors can have people over to the house for refreshments and discussion of Dharma in Krsna consciousness. They can also simply turn on some Hare Krsna video or music while enjoying Krsna Prasad.

Whatever kind of work we do we need to learn an understanding that there is a higher purpose for our labors. The higher purpose is not just the selflessness of supporting our family. The higher purpose we need to learn is our relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, there should be a striving for ideals and higher standards of orderliness and cleanliness .

Please accept my humble obeisances!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Actually, this was an issue with slavery. They would sometimes mercilessly beat the slave child for reading. They needed sudras to do the work. The didn’t want slaves to get ideas possibly becoming less respectful, submissive and obedient.

But, we do want to be as obedient as possible to the pure devotees of the Lord. One great Acarya in the Vaisnava Parampara was illiterate, but he was literate in the essentials of the science of Krsna consciousness.

Most schools have a choice of study plans. Normally people get married and need a particular occupation to pay the bills. The choose a career and study accordingly. Then if one become a crafts person then they are always in company with crafts people. A crafts person may be a brick layer or an electrician, for instance. Therefore, they may call themselves a brick layer or an electrician. According to Vedic understanding these occupations are different types of sudra labor. However, even as a crafts person there may be higher and lower levels similar to different Varnas. One crafts person may be more common labor, another crafts person may be more expert with money handling, another crafts person may be good at management, another crafts person may be good at higher intellectual concerns. The devotee crafts person may also be good at being an example of Krsna consciousness to others at work, at home and in society in general.

Over-all, we can see the advancement to godliness related to classifications according to Varna. It takes virtuous behavior just to do sudra and vaisya work. We see virtues more clearly stated for the Ksatriya and then the brahmana. The Paramahamsa has all godly virtues. Godly virtue is the concern because we are seeing different levels of awakening for the all-godly spirit soul that is part and parcel of the All-Godly Supreme Personality of Godhead.

We become godly through the actions of the mind, words and body. We associate with the All-Godly Supreme Personality of Godhead through His pure devotees, and His teachings. We also associate with the Supreme Personality of Godhead through devotional meditations, especially on the Holy Names or simply the Maha-mantra.:

ISKCON and Varnasrama-Dharma: A Mission Unfulfilled

Hare Krsna!

I would say that Varnasrama is a way of bringing all society to Krsna consciousness. Varnasrama Dharma puts us all on the path of Vedic culture which ultimately leads to Brahmanism and then Vaisnavism. But, we do have to be careful about tampering with nature here. Varna might be established according to one’s nature from birth, but where are the competent astrologers? When one is sufficiently advanced in Dharma then one can get on the path of Yoga beginning with Karma Yoga. Through the principles of Krsna consciousness one can make rapid advancement on the path of Yoga culminating in Bhakti Yoga. What I would like to get at is I don’t like the word “class” as in “class of brahmanas”.
