Powerful Food For Thought

Sri Gopal das – Part 5

Conclusion is Sri Krishna is attracted to Prema only not jnana and vairagya. Bhagavan is always attracted to something He does not possess that is love for Him. So if anyone is interested in making the Supreme Lord notice that person then only Love for Him can attract Him. So those who are naturally disposed or possessed with this love kindly divert it towards Sri Krishna make your life successful. Please remember this Jnana and Vairagya Sri Krishna possesses in abundance however this love for Him, hmm it is not His asset and He confirms this in Srimad Bhagavad Gita.

Sri Krishna says in Srimad Bhagavad Gita:

ananyas cintayanto mam
ye janah paryupasate
tesam nityabhiyuktanam
yoga-ksemam vahamy aham

“But those worship Me with devotion, meditation on My transcendental form – to them I carry what they lack and preserve what they have.” (BG 9.22)

What do we really have, nothing in terms of spiritual asset. Here Sri Krishna says that He will carry what His devotees lack and preserve (protect) what they have. Sri Krishna is not guaranteeing protection of material assets that we have, the family, house, cars, relationships, etc. they are product of this material world, all these belongs to Him. Everything in this universe belongs to Him except devotion to Him, that asset does not belong to Him, so Sri Krishna is guaranteeing the protection of that bhakti asset that we have for Him, if we have any at all. And when Sri Krishna says that He will carry what we lack He means He will provide all the facilities to remove the deficits and make us complete by providing us sadhu sanga, shastras, gurus, temple worship, archa vigrahas and tirthas. We very well know that unless we have this prema bhakti asset Sri Krishna will not look at us nor would be interested in giving us protection.

Sri Gopal das – Part 4

Mother Bhakti Devi who is female had two sons Gyana and Vairagya this means Gyana and Vairagya are male where as Bhakti is feminine in nature. We can see that during treta yuga, the rishis of Dandakaranya forest who were personification of gyana and vairagya they saw their purusha ego disappear and feminine nature invoked when they saw Lord Rama the Supreme Purusha and they all choose to become gopis in Krishna Leela. We all know that Prema is the trait of the prakriti (feminine nature) and gyan and vairagya is the nature of purusha (male). Another example of that feminine nature’s potency in spiritual perfection is our own Sriman Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Sri Vrindavan Chandra the Supreme Enjoyer – Bhogaisvara, Who is always surrounded by females however when He assumes the mood of Srimati Radhika He ends up being the Greatest Renunciant Sriman Gauranga Mahaprabhu of Gambhira. Those who want to keep up their sannyasa vows must worship Sriman Mahaprabhu of Gambhira Puri Who is in Sannyasa Vesha otherwise it is very difficult to follow sannyasa dharma in Kaliyuga especially in the current situation. Prema bhakti jaha hoite avidya vinasa jate. When you have love for your beloved (Krishna) then the focus is on Him. It is pure self-annihilation, no, I didn’t mean suicide rather the devotee is so much absorbed in her beloved Krishna that she forgets about herself and when she forgets about herself and her focus is always on Krishna then how it is possible for maya to disturb that devotee. That is why prema bhakti jaha hoite avidya vinasa jate vede gay jahara charito. The Great Transcendental Supreme Enjoyer became a Great Sannyasi Sriman Gouranga Mahaprabhu of Gambhira by just assuming the mood of Srimati Radharani. Because of Srimati Radharani’s Krishna Prema Sri Krishna Himself end up renouncing His desire to enjoy. Those who are Sri Gauranugas they are actually Sri Radhanugas and only those people cannot be touched by Vishnu Maya because Vishnu Maya is also prakrti – feminine.

Sri Gopal das – Part 3

Love is for the pleasure of the Lord and jnana and vairagya is for our own selves. We do ourselves a favor by being vairagi – renunciant, if we possess some anarthas by getting rid of those anarthas we rid ourselves of the burden of what the anarthas are doing to our consciousness. For example, if we are constipated by getting rid of our waste from the body we are doing ourselves a favor and save ourselves from being diseased. So here we did favor to ourselves not others. On the other hand love means doing favor to others and if we display true love and compassion it attracts even worse human being and gives him hope to transform. Even the Supreme Lord Sri Hari is attracted to that person because He is attracted to that love that person possess and not knowledge or renunciation because He possess all these opulences except love.

That is why in our Gaudiya Vaishnava line starting from Mother Yashodha upto Srimati Radharani and the Gopis are given topmost position. This means Sri Krishna favors prema bhakti over gyana and vairagya because through Jnana and Vairagya; knowledge and renunciation is for personal purification while bhakti or prema bhakti is for the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. Jnana means to know and bhakti means to accept the conclusion of the knowledge and apply it in one’s daily lives. Jnana and Vairagya are automatically included in the bhakti, if a devotee is fortunate enough to get the seed of prema bhakti by another premi bhakta then as a result of that prema bhakti one will simultaneously develop jnana and vairagya. The definition of knowledge in the eyes of vrajavasis are different, here in Vraja mood is to love Sri Krishna and serve Him with all your heart and please Him in any way you can. Because of this love the devotee has no interest in anyone and anything including himself except Sri Krishna the object of His love, so here again because of that love for Sri Krishna, he/she lost interest in their own selves so where is the possibility of maya coming and disturbing them. Maya means choice, either Sri Krishna or your own enjoyment but here it is only Sri Krishna so maya cannot disturb us. Maya means something other than Sri Krishna.

Sri Gopal das – Part 2

Woman being prakriti (feminine) by nature is full of love and this love is the natural disposition of woman, whereas jnana and vairagya is the activity of Purusha and is the natural disposition of purusha, of course real purusha. Where there is love there is a simultaneous mood of renunciation and spontaneity meaning if a woman who loves her husband very much will do everything that is pleasing to that person including any sacrifice that is warranted. She can do this because she loves that person, of course, in Kaliyuga it is not possible because vedically trained women are rare personalities and kaliyuga men are not purushas who will bring out that feminine nature in women. Lotus blooms only in the Sun, lotus being female and Sun being Purusha. A purusha does not mean, husband, he can be father, brother, son, uncle, etc. Sri Krishna the Supreme Purusha is well loved by everyone from His wives, mothers, aunts, sisters, etc. and looked up to for guidance and help. Purushatva does not depend on age either, Sri Kapila Muni, Sri Prahlad, Sri Dhruva and Sri Sukadeva Goswami and of course our own Srila Prabhupada who all the young ladies and men at that time and still today consider Him to be their hero the Purusha because of the Supreme Purusha Sri Krishna present in Him. Because of this love we have for Srila Prabhupada we are still continuing His mission in ISKCON and try our utmost best to follow His divine teachings and sacrifice our desires wherever it is possible. Of course, there are others who loves Srila Prabhupada more than I do but nevertheless you get my point.

Mother’s greatness or should I say a woman’s greatness can be measured in scientific way. A human body can bear only 45 units of pain on dolorimeter. But at the time of giving birth,a mother feels upto 57 units of pain… This is similar to 20 bones getting fractured, all at the same time. This is just to tell you the extent to which a mother goes through to bring the child in this world and if she didn’t have love why would she do it. Love your mom, sister, daughter till the end of your life. See the motherly aspect in every ladies, the mother with whom you fight almost every day suffered so much pain just to give you a beautiful life. When you possess that much love for your mother, wife, daughters and children the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna will definitely notice you because He is attracted by love not jnana and vairagya.

Hare Krishna. All glories to His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

Ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha–davagni-nirvapanam

anandambudhi-vardhanam prati-padam purnamrtasvadanam
sarvatma-snapanam param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam

vidya-vadhu-jivanam — vedic culture or transcendental knowledge, bride, girl, mature woman, the life or soul.

“*A lady whose life endowed with vedic culture and whose life and soul is the principles of vedic culture that is prescribed for women. Of course, this is the comparison Sriman Mahaprabhu is giving how one should be in relation to Sri Krishna Who is the Supreme Husband of all the living entities.”

A woman who is brought up in vedic culture as prescribed by shastra and trained by another female who was also brought up in similar environment is considered vidhya vadhu – vedically trained woman; vidhya means vedic knowledge. The result of the training is that the Vadhu – Bride/lady is well behaved, very humble and tolerant, never selfish, never self-centered and she is always blissful and happy because she lives the life of vedically educated woman. The practice of vedic culture prescribed for woman brings out the feminine nature of woman which is full of love and because of this love, the woman, whether she is a mother, daughter, wife or sister, they are always tolerant and bear the pain like no one else can. That is why the Supreme Lord has given them the responsibility of bearing children and their love manifest in the form of milk during pregnancy which nourishes the child and prepares that child throughout his/her life to properly behave. We are aware of the fact that when a child whose life is not nourished by mother’s love and father’s discipline is always in trouble, one way or another.

What Do We Mean By “Maturity”?

Part Two

Mac-cittah sarva-durgani

“If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditional life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be lost.” (BG 18.58)

“The Guru is not an erring mortal whose activities can be understood by the fallible reason of unreclaimed humanity. There is an eternally impassable line of demarcation between the Saviour and the saved. Those who are really saved can alone know this.” ( Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Srila Prabhupada)

We sing the following prayers everyday in front of Srila Prabhupada. It is related to the same verse that is in Srimad Bhagavad Gita 10.11.

Cakshu dana dilo jei janme janme prabhu sei
divya jnana hrdaya prakasito

“Only unto those great souls who simultaneously have implicit faith in both the Lord and the Spiritual Master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed.” Svetsvatara Upanisad 6.23

Unless we live the life that is being prescribed by Sri Krishna in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita and realize the statement of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Srila Prabhupada and the meaning of above prayer and verses, we will always end up disturbing someone in our day to day ordinary dealings whether it is spiritual or material. I guess if we don’t follow what the Supreme Lord is ordering us to do in the above 18.58 verse; I guess that qualifies us as immature.

Hare Krishna. All glories to His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

Maturity word is overrated because it’s true meaning is not realized properly. No one can be matured materially or spiritually other than one who is perfectly in union with the mood of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna Paramatma. Whether it is material activities or spiritual activities one is bound to make mistakes or not do it right in terms of relating to ordinary people or devotees including advanced vaishnavas. We can see in the spiritual institutions gurus, sannyasis, etc. who were considered very advanced or mature end up doing something that is very immature and lower themselves in the eyes of those who looked up to them. Same thing with the powerful materially motivated leaders who seem to be riding the horse of success who seem to make all the right decision suddenly thrown off that horse and end up having serious problems. The reason,

Daivi hy esa gunamayi
Mama maya duratyaya
Mam eva ye prapadyante
Mayam etam taranti te

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult* to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.” BG 7.14

*Actually for conditioned souls like us it is totally impossible unless Srila Prabhupada showers His Divine Mercy on us, of course, this is something the direct disciples of Srila Prabhupada has experienced it and can vouch for it.

The Divine Energy of Sri Krishna, Vishnu Maya is the reason no one can consider themselves as mature unless of course that person is connected to the Supreme Lord within his/her heart.

“tesam evanukampartham aham ajnana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhava-stho jnana-dipena bhasvata”

“To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.” (BG 10.11).

Unless the above mentioned verse becomes our reality there is no way one can be considered mature as that person will tend to make mistake in dealing with ordinary people and spiritual personalities. In the following verse Sri Krishna is telling Sri Arjuna how to become spiritually and materially mature.

Women Gurus In Kali Yuga?

Continued – Part 5

“…Without serving Krsna according to the vidhi-marga regulative principles of the pancaratrika-vidhi, unscrupulous persons want to jump immediately to the raga-marga principles. Such persons are called sahajiya. There are also demons who enjoy depicting Krsna and His pastimes with the gopis, taking advantage of Krsna by their licentious character. These demons who print books and write lyrics on the raga-marga principles are surely on the way to hell. Unfortunately, they lead others down with them. Devotees in Krsna consciousness should be very careful to avoid such demons. One should strictly follow the vidhi-marga regulative principles in the worship of Laksmi-Narayana, although the Lord is present in the temple as Radha-Krsna. Radha-Krsna includes Laksmi-Narayana; therefore when one worships the Lord according to the regulative principles, the Lord accepts the service in the role of Laksmi-Narayana. In The Nectar of Devotion full instructions are given about the vidhi-marga worship of Radha-Krsna, or Laksmi Narayana. Although there are sixty-four kinds of offenses one can commit in vidhi-marga worship, in raga-marga worship there is no consideration of such offenses because the devotees on that platform are very much elevated, and there is no question of offense. But if we do not follow the regulative principles on the vidhi-marga platform and keep our eyes trained to spot offenses, we will not make progress. (Sri Brahma Samhita 5.30)

akaitava krsna-prema, yena jambunada-hema,

“Pure love for Krishna, just like gold from the Jambu River, does not exist in human society. If it existed, there could not be separation. If separation were there, one could not live.” (CCM 2.43)

Srila Prabhupada’s purport from Brahma Samhita

“….Generally the worship of the Lord begins with the worship of Narayana or Visnu, whereas the worship of Lord Krsna and Radha is most confidential. Lord Narayana is worshipable by the pancaratrika-vidhi, or regulative principles, whereas Lord Krsna is worshipable by the bhagavata-vidhi. No one can worship the Lord in the bhagavata-vidhi without going through the regulations of the pancaratrika-vidhi. Actually, neophyte devotees worship the Lord according to the pancaratrika-vidhi, or the regulative principles enjoined in the Narada-pancaratra. Radha-Krsna cannot be approached by the neophyte devotees; therefore temple worship according to regulative principles is offered to Laksmi-Narayana. Although there may be a Radha-Krsna vigraha, or form, the worship of the neophyte devotees is acceptable as Laksmi-Narayana worship. Worship according to the pancaratrika-vidhi is called vidhi-marga, and worship according to the bhagavata-vidhi principles is called raga-marga. The principles of raga-marga are especially meant for devotees who are elevated to the Vrndavana platform.

The following cut and paste quotes all give us guidance towards attaining the goal that is Srimati Radharani’s love for Sri Krishna which Sriman Mahaprabhu came to give.

“….The other acaryas who appeared before Thakura Bhaktivinoda did not address their discourses so directly to the empiric thinkers. They had been more merciful to those who are naturally disposed to listen to discourses on the absolute without being dissuaded by the specious arguments of avowed oppo¬nents of Godhead. Srila Thakura Bhaktivinoda has taken the trouble of meeting the perverse arguments of mental speculationists by the superior transcendental logic of the absolute truth. It is thus possible for the average modern read¬ers to profit by the perusal of his writ¬ings.” (Thakura Bhaktivinoda by Srila Prabhupada (SBSST)

The following letter written by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura to Srila bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Srila Prabhupada marks the change in Gaudiya Vaishnava approach to spread the mercy of Sriman Mahaprabhu.

“Sarasvati!

“People of this world who are proud of their own aristocratic birth cannot attain real aristocracy. Therefore they attack the pure Vaishnavas, saying, “They have taken birth in low class families because of their sins.” Thus they commit offenses. The solution to this problem is to establish the order of Daivi-Varnashrama-Dharma something you have started doing; you should know that to be the real service to the Vaishnavas. Because pure devotional conclusions are not being preached, all kinds of superstitions and bad concepts are being called devotion by such pseudo-sampradayas as sahajiya atibari. Please always crush these anti-devotional concepts by preaching pure devotional conclusions and by setting an example through your personal conduct.”

Sruti-smrti-puranadi-
pancaratra-vidhim vina
Aikantiki harer bhaktir
Utpatayaiva kalpate

“Devotional service of the Lord that ignores the authorized Vedic literatures like the Upanisads, Puranas and Narada-pancaratra is simply an unnecessary disturbance in society.” (Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.101)

Hare Krishna. All glories to His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

BBD prabhu, in #17 & 18 you quoted Sri Ramananda Raya Samvada with Sriman Mahaprabhu in that Sriman Mahaprabhu rejected everything else except Pure Bhakti which is Prema Bhakti. Are you aware that Sriman Mahaprabhu had this conversation with Sri Ramananda Raya after taking Sannyasa when He is (was) in Radha Bhava. Sri Radha Bhava is pure prema bhakti beyond all rules and regulations and that is every living entity’s goal that is to attain Krsna Prema that Srimati Radharani possesses for Sri Krsna. This is what Sriman Mahaprabhu appeared to give to one and all. The vaidhi bhakti, varnasrama was already existing and people have been practicing time immemorial, but Krishna Prema bhakti this is something new which no one had until the arrival of Sriman Mahaprabhu. Are we liberated souls like Sri Ramananda Raya and others where we can just take off from the ground like the Swans and fly high. If not we should follow what Srila Prabhupada has given us to practice and wait for His Divine Mercy to manifest within our heart rather than quoting Divine Personalities who are beyond our material senses. Srila Prabhupada in order for everyone to receive this Krishna Prema, gave us some rules and regulations to purify ourselves in order to elevate ourselves to the platform that is required to receive this Pure Love for Sri Krishna. If we want to receive Sri Krishna Prema Bhakti then we should follow Sri Guru Srila Prabhupada’s divine instruction Who is none other than the Authorized External Manifestation of Chaittya Guru Sri Krishna Paramatma. Whether Sri Krishna says it or His Divine Representative says it the effect is same and this Sri Krishna confirms in Srimad Bhagavad Gita:

“mac-citta mad-gata-prana bodha yantah parasparam
kathayantas ca mam nityam tusyanti ca ramanti ca”

“The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.” (BG 10.9)

“tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam yena mam upayanti te”

“To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.” (BG 10.10)

Were There Two Buddhas?

Part -3

There is an ongoing debate and comments on dandavats regarding this type of behavior. http://www.dandavats.com/?p=10919

Our disease is that we forget what we were before coming to Krishna consciousness and we end up commenting on great personalities who were pure devotees from birth and call them on first name basis like they are our next door neighbors or someone who knew from high school and deride them like they are nothing. Vedic etiquette requires to address elders with respect what to speak of great personalities. If we don’t follow vedic etiquettes i guess then we are impersonal even though we profess to follow personalism.

If we are not the saved rather the Savior then i guess we may call the other advanced devotees on first name basis and comment on their work and teachings but if we are not the Savior rather the saved then i guess a humble approach is in order. We should remember, a millionaire or a billionaire can criticize another millionaire vice versa however, a beggar cannot criticize the millionaire rather the beggar should beg for mercy. Sriman Mahaprabhu’s teaching clearly points this out and we should make a garland of the following verse and chant the Holy name constantly. Lord Caitanya advises:

tṛnad api sunicena
taror api sahisnuna
amanina manadena
kirtaniyah sada harih

“One can chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking himself lower than the straw in the street. One should be more tolerant than the tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige and ready to offer all respects to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.” (Siksastaka 3)

Every Acarya who manifest in this world they come with single purpose to establish some form of transcendental truth on the order of the Supreme Lord and they operate within that boundary. And this is true with Avataras also They appear with specific task in mind. In similar fashion, Sripad Shankaracharya also appeared by the order of the Supreme Lord to establish specifically the Brahman tattva and make it easier for the other Acaryas to carry further on the foundation he laid. If Sripad Shankaracharya was impersonal then he would not have composed so many personal verses on the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna including the famous Bhaja Govindam and Sri Jagannathastakam, etc. Sripad Shankaracharya was a Titan during his time and it is natural the followers of Sripada Shankaracharya will consider him as the absolute authority in that field just like we hold onto Srila Prabhupada’s teachings and refuse to see or hear any other explanation on the Sastras by anybody else even though they also speak about the same Sri Krishna. If people would criticize Srila Prabhupada based on His disciples’ behavior then it would be very unfortunate as we all know how great Srila Prabhupada is but not the disciples. i think we should also view the followers of Sripada Shankaracharya in that same angle of vision.

There is an ongoing debate and comments on dandavats regarding this type of behavior. http://www.dandavats.com/?p=10919

Hare Krishna. All glories to His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

vadanti tat tattva-vidas
tattvam yaj jnanam advayam
brahmeti paramatmeti
bhagavan iti sabdyate

Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this non-dual substance Brahman, Paramatma or Bhagavan. (SB 1.2.11)

“The Absolute Truth is both subject and object, and there is no qualitative difference there. Therefore, Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan are qualitatively one and the same. The same substance is realized as impersonal Brahman by the students of the Upanishads, as localized Paramatma by the Hiranyagarbhas or the yogis, and as Bhagavan by the devotees. In other words, Bhagavan, or the Personality of Godhead, is the last word of the Absolute Truth. Paramatma is the partial representation of the Personality of Godhead, and impersonal Brahman is the glowing effulgence of the Personality of Godhead, as the sun rays are to the sun-god. Less intelligent students of either of the above schools sometimes argue in favor of their own respective realization, but those who are perfect seers of the Absolute Truth know well that the above three features of the one Absolute Truth are different perspective views seen from different angles of vision.”

The above purport by Srila Prabhupada clearly states that Brahman tattva is the first aspect of Absolute Truth. So we can see it is not the imagined philosophy of Sripada Shankaracharya rather it is the first aspect of Absolute Truth. Sripada Shakaracharya is the Acarya of Brahman Tattva, Sripada Ramanujacharya the Parmatma tattva and Sripad Madhavacharya the Bhagavan Tattva and our own Sriman Mahaprabhu is the Transcendental Giver of Krishna Prema to realize and love the The Absolute Truth Sri Krishna Chandra and the Acaryas in Sriman Mahaprabhu’s sampradaya also follows the same. Yes, due to our association with Srila Prabhupada and if we become the recipient of His Divine Mercy then we have the opportunity to receive the whole truth.
Before we comment on great personalities like we have to know that Sripad Shankaracharya expounded on the Impersonal Brahman aspect to drive out the 72 other religion including buddhism which had a large following to pave way for the other Acaryas to expand on his exploit. Every Acarya who manifest in this world they come with single purpose to establish some form of transcendental truth on the order of the Supreme Lord and they operate within that boundary.

Hare Krishna. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am wondering what is the purpose of Madhavananda das prabhu’s quoting from Narayan Maharaj’s books especially when Narayana Maharaj has been known to encourage devotees of ISKCON to leave the shelter of Srila Prabhupada and take shelter of him to become rasik bhakthas and reinitiated some of them. MD quoting Narayana Maharaj also shows that he has been very busy reading Maharaj’s literature. Obviously, MD couldn’t find anything in Srila Prabhupada’s books to quote and strengthen our faith in Srila Prabhupada rather he is quoting from Narayan Maharaj’s books to do what? Pls read Spiritual Master and Disciple book there you can find many quotes from Srila Prabhupada’s books on devotion to the Spiritual Master. MD prabhu did you read the title of the article before commenting or you just read only Pusta Krishna prabhu’s comments. Maybe you are not aware of Srila Prabhupada’s greatness as Sri Guru, if you did, you wouldn’t be mentioning anyone’s writings unless that person is on the stature of Sri Guru. Srila Prabhupada is Sri Guru and He is eternally present as Sri Guru within this ISKCON and Universe. The Chaittya Guru and Srila Prabhupada are non-different as such just mentioning anyone else within ISKCON especially who tried to undermine the glory of Srila Prabhupada is pretty offensive. Since Srila Prabhupada’s Manifested Leelas and till now every preacher from India including Gaudiya Matha is living off Srila Prabhupada’s preaching arena. No one has made any devotee on their own, everyone is running on and off of Srila Prabhupada’s mercy in the form of His books, His teachings and His institution. It is pretty insulting to Srila Prabhupada and His ISKCON to mention Narayan Maharaja’s statement especially he is one of the main person who said, “Swamiji gave abcd only, for higher teachings you all need to come to Gaudiya Math.” No offense to anyone but everyone knows what Narayana Maharaj and his followers did to ISKCON. There is atonement for every sin in the scripture however there is none for ungratefulness. Expressing gratitude to the Savior is bhakti and our Savior is His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

OPEN LETTER TO Bhakti Vikasa Swami

Hare Krishna. Jai Srila Prabhupada.

Let us be practical, Srila Prabhupada says that the tongue has two activities. To chant the Mahamantra and to eat Mahaprasada. These two combination have Presiding Personalities and They are Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Jagannatha Mahaprabhu of Puri. A common man may not be inclined to chant however, he/she will be inclined to taste Mahaprasada. Especially if we want to make children devotee from young age, they are the one who benefits most from this Mahaprasada distribution. Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna appeared in the form of Lord Jagannatha and as Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to deliver the fallen conditioned souls. Out of these two forms of Divine Mercy, One is more merciful than other. Mahaprasad is definitely lot easier to give out to everyone compared to requesting everyone to chant. Unless, of course the chanter is a very pure devotee of Krishna like Srila Prabhupada. Of course, while Mahaprasada distribution is going on it should be accompanied by Harinama Sankirtan. A person eating Mahaprasada will automatically start feeling the transcendental vibration of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra as the Mahaprasada purifies his/her body, mind and tongue (kaya, mana, vakya) and as a result that person will appreciate the Holy Name better while eating. There are devotees in ISKCON who can vouch for the effect of eating Mahaprasada because that’s what attracted them to Krishna Consciousness in the first place. A Sannyasi may not be able to appreciate this Mahaprasada distribution because he has already taken sannyasa from eating but that doesn’t mean the general populace has taken sannyasa from eating. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came to Sri Jagannatha Puri for a reason, to glorify Sri Krishna’s Holy Name and His Mahaprasada. Sri Krishna through Sri Jagannatha introduced His Mahaprasada and through Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu His Transcendental Name and this we can see in the activities of our Srila Prabhupada, He also introduced this Sankirtan Yajna and celebration of Sri Jagannatha Ratha Yatra where tons of Mahaprasada is distributed all over the world. I don’t think there exist a movement which is like ISKCON who has both. Srila Prabhupada followed Sriman Mahaprabhu’s mood of Sri Jagannatha Puri as it is and that is why He has been very successful.

The following I copied from Dandavats’ comment section. I thank the devotee who posted this conversation with Srila Prabhuupada.

Prabhupada was giving a talk in which he said that in order to go back home, back to Godhead, one must be cent percent pure, cent percent free of material desires and attachments. When Prabhupada saw that the devotees were discouraged, he said, “All right, 90%.” Still they were dejected. Then he said, “All right, 80%.” Still they were crestfallen. Then he said, “All right, 75%—but not less.”

After the talk, Srila Prabhupada commented, “If you just hold on to my lotus feet, I will take you back to Godhead. I have the key to the back door.”

Once, I heard that Srila Prabhupada had said, “Your qualification is that I give an instruction . . .” I thought the rest of the sentence would be “and you follow it,” but the statement was “Your qualification is that I give you an instruction and you try to follow it.” Not even that we follow it—just that we try to follow it.

Since, we live in internet age, we can consider Sri Guru within our heart as Modem just like without the modem we cannot connect to the outside world same way we cannot connect to Krishna’s spiritual world unless of course, one is Nityasiddha who has direct connection otherwise conditioned soul like us we will have to rely on Sri Guru Krishna Paramatma and His Divine Grace in the form of His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

“The personal service of the pure devotee is essential for understanding the spiritual meaning of the words of Thakura Bhaktivinoda. The editor of this journal, origi¬nally started by Thakura Bhaktivinoda, has been trying to draw the attention of all followers of Thakura Bhaktivinoda to this all-important point of his teach¬ings. It is not necessary to try to place ourselves on a foot¬ing of equality with Thakura Bhaktivinoda or (Srila Prabhupada). We are not likely to benefit by a me¬chanical imitation of any practices of Thakura Bhaktivinoda (or Srila Prabhupada) on the oppor¬tunist principle that they may be convenient for us to adopt. The guru is not an erring mortal whose activities can be understood by the fallible reason of unreclaimed humanity. There is an eter¬nally impassable line of demarcation between the savior and the saved. Those who are really saved can alone know this. Thakura Bhaktivinoda (or Srila Prabhupada) belongs to the category of the spiritual world teachers who eternally occupy the superior position.” Thakura Bhaktivinoda by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarsawati Thakura Srila Prabhupada.

“…Without serving Krishna according to the vidhi-marga regulative principles of the pancaratrika-vidhi, unscrupulous persons want to jump immediately to the raga-marga principles. Such persons are called sahajiya. There are also demons who enjoy depicting Krishna and His pastimes with the gopis, taking advantage of Krishna by their licentious character. These demons who print books and write lyrics on the raga-marga principles are surely on the way to hell. Unfortunately, they lead others down with them. Devotees in Krishna consciousness should be very careful to avoid such demons. One should strictly follow the vidhi-marga regulative principles in the worship of Lakshmi-Narayana, although the Lord is present in the temple as Radha-Krishna. Radha-Krishna includes Lakshmi-Narayana; therefore when one worships the Lord according to the regulative principles, the Lord accepts the service in the role of Lakshmi-Narayana. In The Nectar of Devotion full instructions are given about the vidhi-marga worship of Radha-Krishna or Lakshmi-Narayana. “ (end Srila Prabhupada’s commentary)

Varnashrama and vaidhi bhakti go side by side for us conditioned souls and it will greatly help us to understand Srimad Bhagavad Gita which is full of Sri Guru tattva because it is spoken by Sri Guru Krishna Himself.

Sri Guru Krishna Paramatma is expansion of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna Who eternally resides in Goloka dham and to connect with Him in the spiritual world one has to connect within their heart first. We have to establish connection here first then we can see what Sri Guru wants to show us.

“…When there is active willing assent to such association on the part of both then it is possible for the individual soul to attain to the service of the Divinity in the really conscious form.” (Assoc. of Lord Chaitanya by SBSSTSP)

It is the same situation with the Incarnation of the Supreme Lord and He personally says in Srimad Bhagavad Gita, “yada yada hi adharmasya…” once He establishes the principles of religion then He lets it run its course until some interruption appears. Some interruptions have automatic corrections, others through specific Avataras and sometimes Lord Personally have to appear and correct the situations. This time Sri Krishna did it through His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON.

However, we should not take it for granted that because we are in ISKCON we will be automatically transferred to the spiritual world regardless of our present condition. We should guard against complacency and try to follow the Acarya’s instruction to the letter so Sri Guru becomes pleased within the heart and help us achieve the spiritual goal within this lifetime. In the following commentary Srila Prabhupada very nicely explains how to understand spiritual life and how to progress.

“…Generally the worship of the Lord begins with the worship of Narayana or Vishnu, whereas the worship of Lord Krishna and Radha is most confidential. Lord Narayana is worshipable by the pancaratrika-vidhi, or regulative principles, whereas Lord Krishna is worshipable by the bhagvata-vidhi. No one can worship the Lord in the bhagavata-vidhi without going through the regulations of the pancaratrika-vidhi. Actually, neophyte devotees worship the Lord according to the pancaratrika-vidhi, or the regulative principles enjoined in the Narada-pancaratra. Radha-Krsna cannot be approached by the neophyte devotees; therefore temple worship according to regulative principles is offered to Lakñhmi-Narayana. Although there may be a Radha-Krishna vigraha, or form, the worship of the neophyte devotees is acceptable as Lakñhmi-Narayana worship. Worship according to the pancaratrika-vidhi is called vidhi-marga, and worship according to the bhagavata-vidhi principles is called raga-marga. The principles of raga-marga are especially meant for devotees who are elevated to the Våndavana platform.”

During Srila Prabhupada’s physical presence the kripa siddha program was in full effect and unfortunately, out of sight out of mind type of situation currently minimized the effect of it. The mercy is there but maya is overwhelmingly very powerful and She blows us out like a fly in the hurricane.

Daivi hy esa gunamayi
Mama maya duratyaya
Mam eva ye prapadyante
Mayam etam taranti te

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult* to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.” BG 7.14 (*actually impossible)

“miche māyā-baddha jīva āśā-pāśe phire’
tava icchā binā kichu korite nā pāre

5) The tiny soul bound up by Maya vainly struggles in the fetters of worldly desire. Without Your sanction he is unable to do anything.” (Thakura Bhaktivinoda)

Srila Prabhupada’s ISKCON is Kripa movement meaning it is a mercy movement and we all live by Srila Prabhupada’s mercy alone. ISKCON in its truest form runs on the mercy of Srila Prabhupada Who is a Divine Mercy Incarnation of both Sri Nityananda Prabhu and Sriman Gauranga Mahaprabhu. We should understand this ISKCON is manifested by Sri Nityananda Prabhu through Srila Prabhupada for the pleasure of Sriman Mahaprabhu and Sri Krishna. Srila Prabhupada to deliver the conditioned souls created very wonderful rules and regulations which when applied will bring us to the desired goal. Srila Prabhupada replaced some of the prescribed sadhana practices for spiritual perfection with book distribution, ratha yatras, Hari Nama sankirtan, Sunday programs, festivals, etc. These practices are only for ISKCON and not for other sampradayas so it will be effective in ISKCON only and that too if we worship Srila Prabhupada because the Founder-Acarya of ISKCON is Srila Prabhupada and He put all His Divine Mercy in the foundation of ISKCON. Just like in traffic or an accident or calamity, the police officer can override the traffic light signals and personally direct the traffic until a satisfactory flow of vehicle gets started and once everything is rectified again the traffic signals are activated.

There is a nice example from Srimad Bhagavad Gita where the Supreme Lord Sri Hari Mukunda Murari Sri Krishna says:

Yo yo yam yam tanum bhaktah
Sraddhayarcitum icchati
Tasya tasyacalam sraddham
Tam eva vidadhamy aham

I am in everyone’s heart as the Supersoul. As soon as one desires to worship the demigods, I make his faith steady so that he can devote himself to some particular deity.” (BG 7.21)

Sa taya sradhaya yuktas
Tasyaradhanam ihate
Labhate ca tatah Kaman
Mayaiva vihitan hi tan

Endowed with such a faith, he seeks favors of a particular demigod and obtains his desires. But in actuality these benefits are bestowed by Me alone.” (BG 7.22)

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Srila Prabhupada simplified this Prapatti or Saranagati and incorporated in His Divine Mission. The actual full-fledge effectiveness was seen and still being seen is in Srila Prabhupada’s ISKCON. In the 60s western disciples who had no idea about Krishna consciousness or Varnashrama dharma by simply surrendering to Srila Prabhupada and by pleasing Him in whatever way they can, they attained the top-most platform of Krishna Consciousness. Unfortunately, after Srila Prabhupada’s physical departure and by maya’s influence, the presence of Srila Prabhupada’s mercy is not felt on that scale directly even though we all read His books and does guru puja in the morning. The Divine Flow of Mercy of Sri Guru is now comes via medium of His disciples who carry the mercy on a small scale not like the torrential rain that we experienced during Srila Prabhupada’s divine physical presence. Alas, the Divine Mercy during the Divine Physical Presence of Srila Prabhupada which was forceful like the floods where you have no choice but to get swept away is no longer present rather I would say it is not invoked. Out of sight out of mind, we are experiencing that right now. As long the devotees were maintaining that attitude of pleasing Srila Prabhupada constantly the devotees were connected uninterruptedly within their heart to Sri Guru Krishna Paramatma as result they experienced Krishna Consciousness on highest platform like the liberated souls. Those devotees who were sincerely connected to Srila Prabhupada are testimony to the fact that what is impossible meaning Krishna Conscious on the highest platform was easily practiced by even hippies like us who were accustomed to breaking all the regulative principles.

His Master’s Voice (HMV) record has a picture of dog sitting and staring into the gramophone and it shows that the dog is only interested in hearing His Master’s Voice. We should be like that dog practicing faithfulness and loyalty only hearing from our Sri Guru Master within our heart and when we do we can easily realize all the statements of Srimad Bhagavad Gita that our Eternal Supreme Master Sri Krishna has spoken for our benefit.

Prapatti is like working for a very gentlemanly wealthy individual who is very kind to his loyal and faithful servants. Even in our lifetime we may have seen certain wealthy individuals are very favorably disposed towards their servants and servants will give their life for that type of master. During Treta Yuga Lord Ramachandra displayed this pastime where the subjects were ready to follow Him to jungle and Vanaras and Bears ready to lay down their life for Lord Ramachandra. Under Lord Ramachandra the people of Ayodhya and others lived without any anxiety because they knew Lord Ramachandra would take care of them.

There are many examples like that even within our lifetime and especially with Srila Prabhupada. Those who lived during the physical presence of Srila Prabhupada can give the first hand experience of serving and pleasing Srila Prabhupada. They were practicing Prapatti in reality and experiencing the wonderful bliss and spiritual happiness of serving Srila Prabhupada which is directly manifesting from their heart by the mercy of Sri Guru Krishna Paramatma.

“tesam evanukampartham aham ajnana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhava-stho jnana-dipena bhasvata”

“To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.” (BG 10.11).

catur-varnyam maya srstam
guna-karma-vibhagasah
tasya kartaram api mam
viddhy akartaram avyayam

“According to the three modes of material nature and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions of human society were created by Me. And, although I am the Creator of this system, you should know that I am yet then non-doer, being unchangeable.” (BG 4.13)

Sri Krishna in Srimad Bhagavad Gita says that this Varnashrama system was created by Him to help jivas to act in a systematical way that will help them surrender to Him. In another words, a system of surrender to Supreme Lord where the Lord can decide when and how to give results for the action performed by the jivas.

Karmany evadhikaras te
Ma phalesu kadacana
Ma karma-phala-hetur bhur
Ma te sango’stv akarmani

“You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.” (BG 2.47)

This is what Sri Krishna wants from us the conditioned jivas to follow Varnashrama dharma enunciated by Him and this way go home back to Godhead. When we follow Sri Krishna’s instruction cent-percent meaning not expecting any result but totally absorbed in pleasing Him in our own capacity using the material body that is structured according to guna and karma only then it can be considered Daivi Varnashrama Dharma otherwise it will be just Varnashrama Dharma.

So the Supreme Beneficiary of this Varnashrama Dharma is Sri Krishna Paramatma and He resides in our heart as four-handed form Sri Vishnu, Sriman Narayana. Varnashrama Dharma is part of this Prapatti system and is centered on surrendered to Sriman Narayana as Sri Vishnu is the worshippable Lord for Sri Sampradaya whereas we are focused on Sri Krishna. Based on the above instructions of Sri Krishna in Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Sripada Ramanujacharya a system of surrender which is called Prapatti was manifested by Sripada Ramanujacharya for the benefit of humanity. In this system, a disciple who is not capable of doing sadhana or does not have brahminical background or absence of any other qualifications the disciple if he/she is sincere in his/her desire to surrender to the Supreme Lord then the Sri Guru like Srila Prabhupada can accept the disciple based on this surrender principle and give them a bhajan path that is easier and beneficial to that disciple.

2. The following is a letter written by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati:
Saraswati!
People of this world who are proud of their own aristocratic birth attack the pure vaisnava… Thus they commit offences. The solution to the problem is to establish the order of daiva-varnasrama-dharma – something you started doing; you should know that to be the real service to the Vaisnava. Because pure devotional conclusions are not being preached, all kinds of superstition and bad concepts are being called devotion by such pseudo sampradayas as sahajiya and ativadi.
Please always crush these ant-devotional concepts by preaching pure devotional conclusion and by setting an example… Please try very hard to make sure that the service to sri mayapur will become a permanent thing. The real service to Sri Mayapur can be done by acquiring printing presses, distributing devotional books, and sankirtana – preaching. Please do not neglect to serve Sri Mayapur or to preach for the sake of your own reclusive bhajana. When I am not present any more, please take care to serve Sri Mayapur dhama which is so dear to you. This is my special instruction to you.
I had a special desire to preach the significance of such books as Srimad-Bhagavatam, Sat-Sandarbha, and Vedanta Darshana. You have to accept that responsibility. Sri Mayapur will prosper if you will establish an educational institution there. Never make any effort to collect knowledge or money for your own enjoyment. Only to serve Lord will you collect these things.

The guidance of the guru is no curtailment of one’s spiritual freedom who are eternally free also follow his guid¬ance by the spontaneous undeviating impulse of their perfectly pure nature. Guidance of the guru is the only divine guid¬ance. Only atheists who are by their choice opposed to the service of Godhead, can be consistent opponents of the obligation to serve the guru in the same uncondi¬tional way as one should be prepared to serve God¬head Himself. There is no difference between the two functions. If the claim of the one is denied it necessarily involves the denial of the claim of the other. Nityananda and His companions form one of the five groups of the associates of Sri Krsna Caitanya, whose distinctive function is that of the guru. (Associates of Lord Chaitanya by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Srila Prabhupada)

This article was written by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Who introduced this prapatti system of total submission to Sri Guru and His Divine Blessing to become a perfect servant. Srila Prabhupada (SBSST) introduced this system after getting instruction from Thakura Bhaktivinoda to design a system to deliver Sriman Mahaprabhu’s Krishna Prema Bhakti to entire humanity. The reasons are given below to set up this Prapatti (Surrender to Sri Guru) system :

1. It is thus possible for the average modern read¬ers to profit by the perusal of his writ¬ings.” (Thakura Bhaktivinoda by Srila Prabhupada (SBSST)

continued from previous comment:

“…Nityänanda is the Primary Manifestive Constituent of the Divinity. Nityananda alone possesses the distinctive function of the guru. In Nityananda the function is embodied. Nityananda is the servant-God. He serves Sri Gaurasundar by the distinctive method of reverential servitude. He is identical with Sri Balarama of krsna-lila Sri Balarama is not the chum of Krsna, but His re¬spected elder brother. It is intimate relationship charac¬terized by becoming reserved on one side and of respectful deference on the other. Individual souls are under the direction of Nityananda. They receive their service of Sri Gaurasundar i.e. of Krsna, at his hands. Nityananda is not a jiva. He is Divinity He is the ultimate source of the jiva. The jiva is a potency of Nityananda. No jiva can be the medium of the service of the Absolute to another jiva. The Absolute alone may communicate His service to the separable constituents of Himself. This is the real nature of the function of the guru.

NEVER TOUCHED BY MAYA

But all jivas are not liable to be eclipsed by the deluding potency. Those who are so liable are again distinct from the eternally free jivas. The eternally free jivas are inseparable associates of Nityananda. They an integrated part and parcel of Himself. They never fall into the clutches of maya. When Nityananda manifests His appearance on the mundane plane His inseparable constituents also appear in His company. They some¬times manifest their function on this lower place in a visible form on the errands of Nityananda. They are Vaisnavas whose subordination to Nityananda is natural and ingrained in their nature. It is not neces¬sary for such souls to undergo the process of enlighten¬ment for being restored to the spiritual plane. Unless this fact is borne in mind the conditioned soul may be tempted to undervalue the constant guidance of the guru on the hypocritical plea of following in the foot¬steps of the eternally free pure devotees. Those, there¬fore, who suppose that deliverance from the bondage of this world should be practicable without the con¬stant guidance of the spiritual preceptor, confound the conditioned state with the free.

Sri Guru Srila Prabhupada Kripa, , this is what everyone needs now in Kali Yuga. There are no nitya-siddhas, no sadhana-siddhas only candidates for kripa-siddhas and this perfection can only come from Sri Guru Who is within our heart. Of course, we need a via medium through which we can invoke the Sri Guru within our heart. He is the Supreme Master Who is in our heart and Who has been with us life after life Who if invoked will open our inner eyes meaning Who will connect our vision with His vision so we can see what He sees in this world and beyond. Caksu Dana Dilo Yei Janme Janme Prabhu Sei. To invoke the Real Guru Who is within our heart we need an external medium meaning an external authorized form of Chaittya Guru Sri Guru Krishna Paramatma Himself manifested to carry out His mission. Because it is Sri Krishna Himself Who will conduct His Divine Activities through that Divine Form.

GUIDE TO THE ABSOLUTE
The guru is the embodiment of the manifestation of the divinity to the pure receptive spiritual essence of the disciple. The guru is the real and original recipient of the Truth. He communicates his knowledge to the disciple. The disciple is too small a particle to be able by himself to receive the whole truth. He is enabled to receive Him through the power of the guru. The guru, as it were, takes the disciple by the hand and guides his every step on the plane of the Absolute. It is perpetual tutelage on the part of the disciple. This fact may be expressed in another way. The cognitive faculty of the individual soul can have no ground to stand upon unless the Divinity Himself condescends to be the legs as well as the ground on which he is to stand to func¬tion at all. This function of the divinity is performed by the guru. As a matter of fact the Divinity actually reveals Him only to Himself. The individual soul is a separable constituent of the guru. it is only when he happens to be associated by his own free choice with the guru in a completely dependent manner that he can be on the plane of the guru’s service of the Divinity. He may or may not choose to be so associated. The guru may or may not choose to admit him to his association. When there is active willing assent to such association on the part of both then it is possible for the individual soul to attain to the service of the Divinity in the really conscious form.

GUIDE TO THE ABSOLUTE (Associates of Lord Chaitanya – By Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Srila Prabhupada)
