Dear Hari-sauri Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Thank you so much for reminding us of that most incredible marathon. I was on the Radha-Damodhara Party at that time and I remember that specific day when we went out at 7:00am and returned at midnight. We all broke our personal records that day, but the report from the Chicago Airport made all sankirtan devotees hairs stand on end. It brought tears to my eyes today, 31 years later, and hearing it today is even sweeter than when I first read this letter back then.

The pure bliss that Srila Prabhupada gave us by allowing us to perform the greatest service to humanity, the distribution of his transcendental devotional ecstasies was inconceivable. We were soldiers then, in Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhus army. Our mission was to take out the enemy, the agents of Kali, anger, lust and greed. The battlefield was the hearts of all living beings. Indeed as we tried to touch the hearts of the conditioned souls, our own hearts also became purified. So was, and is the magic of distributing the transcendental literatures of the Maha Bhagavat Jagat Guru Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada wrote to Ramesvara Prabhu, “The temple is a place not for eating and sleeping, but as a base from which we send out our soldiers to fight with maya. Fight with maya means to drop thousand and millions of books into the lap of the conditioned souls. Just like during war time the Bombs are raining from the sky like anything.” (letter to Ramesvara Aug. 3, 1973)

Though I reflect nostalgically about the wonder years of those days of uninterrupted meditation on book distribution, I know there are great heroes of today compassionately sacrificing their time and energy to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books. I pray to Sri Sri Gour Nitai, Srila Prabhupada and all sankirtan devotees past and present, that I may have their blessings to become disentangled from my material attachments and once again become a simple foot soldiers in the special forces of Srila Prabhupada’s book distribution militia.

Your servant,
Udayananda dasa

Be Bold

Dear Vaisesikha Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

This is your old friend Udayananda dasa. You and Praghosa Prabhu are my heroes. Srila Prabhupada once wrote, “Your letter is very much pleasing to me with the report of the book distribution. Whenever I get report of my book selling, I feel strength. Even now in this weakened condition I have got strength from your report. You should know that in this work you have Krishna’s blessings.” (letter to Satsvarupa Sept. 8, 1974)

Thank you so much for giving our Srila Prabhupada so much strength for the past 33 years. When we were on the Radha Damodhara Party one devotee asked Srila Prabhupada if we died out on book distribution would we go back to Godhead. Srila Prabhupada responded, “Yam yam vapi smaran bhavam; tyajaty ante kalevaram; tam tam evaiti kaunteya; sada tad-bhava-bhavitah.” Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, that state he will attain without fail.” Srila Prabhuupada elaborated that we must keep our minds fixed on Krsna always praying for His mercy.

We were collectively dissappointed, we were hoping for the proverbial “Get out of jail free card”. Srila Prabhupada could see our dissappointment so he said, “But if you dedicate your whole life to distributing my books, then I guarantee you that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu will personally come and take you back to Godhead in this very life time!”

Prabhuji, both you and Praghosa Prabhu are still distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books almost every day after all these years. You are very intelligent and fortunate. There is no doubt in my mind that you will again be with Srila Prabhupada at the end of this life. Please bless me that I might once again become freed from the shackles of thinking there is something more important than book distribution, and once again assist Srila Prabhupada in this most intimate service.

Your servant,
Udayananda dasa

Constant Practice and Detachment

Dear Phalini devi dasi,

Excellent letter. I know how hard both you and your husband have worked at your wonderful marriage. You both are exemplary householders and disciples of Srila Prabhupada. Those who would see this letter in any other light are simply flies, and Srila Prabhupada has taught us to be like the honey bees. I was personally in Srila Prabhupada’s room in October 1977 when he was very ill and he spoke the following, “There is nothing that has caused me more pain during my preaching then the fact that the householders have not stayed together in Krsna Consciousness.”

To encourage the world of devotees, both old and new, to follow the science of a spiritual Krsna Conscious marriage and family life, is GREAT service to Srila Prabhupada. There is no doubt this is pleasing to Srila Prabhupada. Thank you for removing some of the pain from the heart of our beloved Srila Prabhupada by your dedication to each other and your dedication to our Guru Maharaja.

Your servant,
Udayananda dasa
