i was previously thinking that the present design is not a good idea but this statement from Ambarsih prabhu has changed my feelings:
“Since we practically require a larger Temple now, and since architectural, structural engineering is nearly completed, and since I’m giving the major lead gift and the GBC Body has already approved it, where is the Krishna conscious logic to delay the construction and virtually stop it?”
there are 2 sayings that come to mind
1-dont look a gift horse in the mouth
2-make hay while the sun shines
build build build and stop bickering!

Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur states in his Nabadwip dham Mahatmya that all the holy dhamas in kali yuga are becoming “gupta” or hidden and that only Sri Mayapur will alone remain visible to the fallen conditioned souls.
So, how is the dham to remain visible?
Under Srila Prabhupadas umbrella everything is BIG and outstanding so therefore as a trancendentalist, Prabhupada is empowered to embrace everything wether it be so called vedic or american just to attract people.
Srila Prabhupada authorised Vishnujana Maharaj to use western melodies to accompany the Mahamantra so that this too could attract people.
One devotee said a while ago that Prabhupada never said that everything should be vedic, but on the other hand, Sri Nandanandana Prabhu has a book called “proof of vedic cultures global existance”, therefore it is likely that American and European architectural design derives some of its inspiration from the original vedic?
Nonetheless, Sri Mayapur is the most merciful abode of Lord Gauranga and His initimate associates therefore mercy accomodates everyone and in this spirit the Mayapur project is the most important one of all Iskcons projects and instead of whining and finding apparent faults, devotees should get on board somehow or another and help fullfil this most great desire of Srila Prabhupadas.
Every temple and leader should now be encouraging its devotees to assist somehow or at least by imbibing the consciousness that this project is now imminent and sending wellwishes and sharing information.
Speaking of which, can someone please inform us when exactly construction will begin?
Thanks for sharing with us Hari Sauri prabhu!

This is a very interesting discussion. I do not however agree that iskcon owes its members nothing.
Let us think first how a person feels when they give 100% of their time to the society and doesnt get all their basic necessities met and sees others getting thousands of dollars and a comfortable life for considerably much less time because their value is somehow higher due to social reasons?
Iskcon is a society that is coming to terms with the social/economic/health and other multifarious needs of its members. In some temples devotees who are engaged in at least 40 hours a week service get some wage and yet some devotees disagree with this. However, if that person were to “get a job” would that actually be a better thing? After all, they are then paying taxes to a corrupt government and somehow supporting even indirectly sense gratification and other things that devotees should not be involved in.
That is not to say that having a job is wrong, in many cases it is quite alright especially if a devotee is self employed.
But if someone is given the option to work in Iskcon then that is a far worthier cause and it will help not only keep the devotee engaged but also keeps the money within Iskcon as well as the labor.
Many devotees have left after not having even their basic healthcare needs met. Sometimes we see very surrendered devotees getting next to nothing and sometimes managers will visit india 3 times a year, have nice cars and so on. So many people are getting very nice lifestyles from being in Iskcon while many are getting nil.
Srila Prabhupada built a house in which the whole world can live in, its buildings, projects and even more important its members all need maintaining.
If someone is giving all of their time then Iskcon owes them their care, to say Iskcon owes its members nothing is a very cultish statement and I hope no non devotees see it for they will think we are abusive.
Times are changing, for many , they will make some agreement before joining a temple of living in a community of vaisnavas as to how their needs will be met in exchange for many hours of surrender. This is a practical arrangement and quite bonafide.
I think the question is- How much should we get in return? Some actually get much more than what they need while others get next to nothing and in some cases nothing.
The conclusion is to find the balance between the material and spiritual just as Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura said in Caitanya Siksamrita.
Devotees are growing up and becoming more realistic.
It is healthy to help devotees be steady in their basic needs even if it means financially also. As long as it is not a burden to the temple. Many temples have lots of money, one temple advertised a salary of $60 000 a year for a temple presidents position…
Please let us discuss how to create an interdependancy between iskcon and its members not a mindset of give and expect (and sometimes get) nothing.

we should take the example of bhaktin christina as one of the utmost courage and compassion. at the risk of her own life, she wishes to try to make it through the pregnancy in order to save the life of her child. I am pained to hear of this extremely complex and painful situation and i appeal to all devotees that have some spare funds to please please help out this couple with their struggles.
for those of us that cannot help financially, we must pray regularly to the Lord for help and protection and those that live in the vicinity of Baladeva and Christina to please offer friendship and emotional care through this most difficult time.
we are all a family and as such it is our duty to support each other despite our status.

iskcon soho street is really showing the way for the rest of europe how to be enthusiastic in the discharge of Prabhupadas basic instructions for preaching. having being the first temple i visited with the guidance of Bhakta Robert (now Radha Raman dasa), it was truly a trancendental experience.
Please continue to share wonderful adventures and developments with us
