Gold from a ‘dirty’ place – the football field

Hare KrishnaBy Praghosa dasa

I recently read a letter which was eloquently penned by Bhakti Charu Maharaja which really struck me, so much so, I became inspired to write a few words about it. It struck me for a couple reasons, one the simple essence of Maharaja’s letter being the glorification of other devotees, which is always an inspirational meditation to see in action, one devotee glorifying other devotees. The other aspect that I found equally, if not more eye-catching, was an analogy that Maharaja used.

Who went West - Srila Prabhupada or the Holy Name?

Hare KrishnaBy Antardwip das

Some people hold that, having been prophesied by scripture, by Lord Chaitanya and by the previous acharyas, if Srila Prabhupada had not spread Krishna Consciousness, some other devotee, or some group of devotees, would have been empowered to do so in Srila Prabhupada’s place. In other words, the prophecy to spread Krishna Consciousness around the world relied on empowerment, rather than an empowered individual, for its fulfillment. It is similar to saying that if we were empowered like Hanuman, we could also jump to Lanka. But is empowerment all that is needed? Can anyone by empowerment do any prophesied task as well as anyone else?

Sri Radha—the Feminine Divine

Hare KrishnaBy Nagaraja dasa

Radha and Krishna are one, yet They have assumed two separate forms to enjoy loving pastimes. Numerous theological texts explain how this is so, but most thorough are the writings of Krishnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami and Rupa Gosvami, great masters in the Vaishnava tradition whose books have been translated and commented upon by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. To understand Sri Radha, then, English readers would do well to turn to Srila Prabhupada’s books.

Hare KrishnaBy Lilasuka dasi

Doing service together in co-operation with other devotees and friends towards a common goal is truly the key to surcharging both the atmosphere and our own souls with spiritual bliss. That was the scene on the days before Janmastami 2014. As people worked together, the air was surcharged with inspiration and creativity for the Lord.

Srila Prabhupada—Vani and Vapuh

Hare KrishnaBy Giriraj Swami

After Srila Prabhupada left us on November 14, 1977, I came across a section in Srimad-Bhagavatam—Canto 4, Chapter 28—in which he explicitly discusses the disappearance of the spiritual master and how the disciple is to serve him—even in separation. The following paragraph summarizes the essence of his instructions

Honoring Srila Prabhupada

Hare KrishnaBy Radhanatha Swami

When Srila Prabhupada began his book distribution he was the only distributor. He would take his magazines and just go from tea shop to store at his old age trying to convince people to accept the message of Krishna in the form of Back To Godhead Magazine. And in a few years he created the largest publisher in Indian literature in the history of the world. Hundreds, of millions of books have been distributed. Sometimes tens and thousands of Bhagavad-Gita distributed in one day, by those who are touched by his spirit of compassion. We can speak on this subject for many many hours, days, weeks, months, years and life times. What was Srila Prabhupada’s motivation? Selfless, unconditional love for Krishna.

How to Celebrate Janmashtami

Hare KrishnaBy Krishna das

Where Vaishnava temples exist, festivities begin before dawn and extend all day until midnight, the exact moment of the anniversary of Krishna’s appearance. Events include kirtan, singing the Lord’s name along with other devotees; and japa, private, more intimate prayer. Some devotees cook a feast of over one hundred dishes, while others perform drama and dance. Some clothe and decorate the deity of Krishna while others string enormous flower garlands and other decorations for the temple. Incense burns, scriptures are read, and all but the young and the infirm fast all day. The deities are also bathed with a variety of auspicious liquids in a kind of ablution ceremony called abhisheka. Sometimes taking over two hours, this is performed with great pomp.

Margarine Spreads vs. Butter

Hare KrishnaBy Dusyanta dasa

If this were a boxing contest in a fight between the two opponents “margarine” and “butter” it would not be a fair contest. It’s like trying to compare a little girl or boy fighting against Muhammad Ali. In this example “butter” is Muhammad Ali because butter is a natural food product. Not only is butter a natural food product but more importantly the body recognises butter when butter is ingested. Because margarine spreads are not natural, when it is ingested into the body it is not recognised as a natural product by the body.

Glimpse of Goloka at ISKCON Convention Centre, Bangalore

Hare KrishnaBy Sugopi Sakhi Devi Dasi

Visitors had a glimpse of the enthralling spiritual world this Janmashtami at ISKCON Convention Centre, Bangalore. Walking in through the main gates of the temple, one had a wonderful sight of an awesome towering deity of Krishna. Close by was an equally tall deity of Vishnu resplendent with Anantasesha. The waters of the fountain at His lotus feet reminded everyone of the causal ocean, though it was a miniature version with gently flowing waters.

There were bhajans, songs and a dance by different students as well as rememberances of Srila Prabhupada by his disciples. This was followed by an abhisek organised by the ashram boys and a large feast which the students helped prepare.

Forever Your Servant

Hare KrishnaBy Indradyumna Swami

Srila Prabhupada, I’ve never known your words to be untrue. It is one of the reasons that I have full faith in you and that my desire to assist your mission in this world becomes stronger day by day. You once wrote to me that you felt your spiritual master was always “watching over and protecting you.” Please also watch over and protect me as I assist you with your service in this world. Then at a suitable time, when you see fit, please grant me eternal service to you in the transcendental abode.

The Descent of God

Hare KrishnaBy Ravindra-svarupa Dasa

All over the world we find the kind of literature we call scripture. These works tell us a particular kind of tale. They report those extraordinary occasions on which the divine penetrated into our world, and our tiny space and time housed for a while the eternal and infinite. Witnesses to these incursions, utterly changed by what they had seen, found themselves compelled to pour into the world’s indifferent and disbelieving ear their strange and powerful tales. And just because these witnesses were so changed, others listened, and they were changed in turn.
