Gold from a ‘dirty’ place – the football field

Hare KrishnaBy Praghosa dasa

I recently read a letter which was eloquently penned by Bhakti Charu Maharaja which really struck me, so much so, I became inspired to write a few words about it. It struck me for a couple reasons, one the simple essence of Maharaja’s letter being the glorification of other devotees, which is always an inspirational meditation to see in action, one devotee glorifying other devotees. The other aspect that I found equally, if not more eye-catching, was an analogy that Maharaja used.

Thousands visit ISKCON Leicester for Kirtan Fest and Heritage Open Days

Hare KrishnaBy Nimai Devi Dasi

The cream of mostly British kirtan leaders including Amala Harinama Das, Nadiya Mani Devi Dasi, Nama Rasa Das and Tulasi Sutaria, Radha Londonisvara Dasa, Kavi, Nimai Gadhvi and many others lead participants in chanting Hare Krishna at Leicester’s newly acquired property. The highlight of the weekend was a maha street harinama on the Saturday night, where the devotees practically danced out of the temple and around the City Centre. A local Police Sergeant even joined in the dancing and commented that he wished they could be on harinama all night.

Ghee (mother)

Hare KrishnaBy Dusyanta dasa

If there is one food that represents the fullness of the mode of goodness, the Earth, the Moon and our mother cow it has to be Ghee or mother Ghee. Many of us who experience ghee just do so by opening a tin of ghee purchased at the market store. But how many of us really think about this product and how it came to be in this tin in this form. For devotees who are aspiring to live the “simple” lifestyle influenced as much as possible by the mode of goodness then our food becomes of prime importance to healthy living. And the way it is grown and manufactured or processed even more important.

The Governing Body Commission (GBC) of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has recently increased its focus on succession; on the need to identify and develop new leaders. As a result the GBC has asked three of its committees to focus on ways to speed up the selection and development process without compromising the quality of the training. These three committees are the GBC Succession Committee, the GBC Organizational Development Committee, and the GBC Appointments Committee.

Astrology

Hare KrishnaBy Bhakti Vikas Swami

“Regarding astrology, you should not listen to any of these so-called astrologers—strictly avoid. Don’t even see them. What is the use of seeing them? Astrology is meant for the materialist, but a spiritualist does not care for the future. Everything is dependent upon Krishna. So where is the necessity of astrology? ”

World Holy Name Week - Starts with a Splash

Hare KrishnaBy Ekalavya Das

This year, World Holy Name Week, which began in 1996 as a one day celebration as part of ISKCON’s Centennial Celebration of Srila Prabhupada’s birth, is bigger and better then ever before. Social media and internet have allowed us to access a large portion of the world of ISKCON. Never before has there been this capacity to spread a message to the world in such a short amount of time.

The last instructions of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

Hare KrishnaBy Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

No matter whenever and wherever I happen to take birth, let my loving affection and attachment remain unshaken throughout each and every lifetime for the following things: for my divine spiritual master, for Sri Gauranga, for the detailed topics of pure devotional service (and the methods of its execution) as personally instructed by Him, for the holy places of pilgrimage such as Sri Navadvipa, Sri Kshetra, Sri Vrndavana, etc. , which are all blooming with divine sanctity due to His performance of wonderful pastimes therein, for the diksa mantra bestowed upon me by the divine grace of my spiritual master, for the holy name of Sri Hari, for the most beloved eternal associates of the Lord…

Spiritual Communism, Organized Religion, Varnasrama-Dharma, and Self-Reliance

Hare KrishnaBy Akruranatha dasa

Srila Prabhupada wanted us to set up ISKCON as an almost self-contained, devotional society, with our own schools, farms, economy, and social system. So far we have not completely realized that ambition, though there are some very good schools and options for those who want to live a life of ‘full-time’ engagement in ISKCON. But we also have large ‘outside congregations’ of devotee (like myself) who have our own jobs, careers, and community engagements. Now there is even a member of the U.S. Congress who is a Hare Krishna devotee.

Margarine Spreads vs. Butter

Hare KrishnaBy Dusyanta dasa

If this were a boxing contest in a fight between the two opponents “margarine” and “butter” it would not be a fair contest. It’s like trying to compare a little girl or boy fighting against Muhammad Ali. In this example “butter” is Muhammad Ali because butter is a natural food product. Not only is butter a natural food product but more importantly the body recognises butter when butter is ingested. Because margarine spreads are not natural, when it is ingested into the body it is not recognised as a natural product by the body.

An Alternative to Forces that Drive Our Lives

Hare KrishnaBy Advaita Chandra das

Our modern lives and the decisions we take on a daily basis are typically driven by three major forces - DATA (D), MONEY (M) and RIGHTS (R) - which influence and move us sometimes in very subtle ways. We search for happiness by manipulating these forces to get material sense enjoyment. Unfortunately, the happiness we experience is fleeting and disappointingly unsubstantial. Consequently, many are frustrated and angry with the status quo. And, well-being, at both individual and collective levels, has been severely compromised. What’s amiss? Where did we go wrong?

Theodicy on Fallen

Hare KrishnaBy Patita Pavana das

“If there were no one to control, there would be no meaning to the conception of the supreme controller (isvara), just as there is no meaning to a king without his subjects. If all the subjects became king, there would be no distinction between the king and an ordinary citizen.. Someone may argue, “Why is there a need to create the spiritual sparks?” The answer can be given in this way: Since the Absolute Personality of Godhead is omnipotent, He has both unlimited and limited potencies. This is the meaning of omnipotent. To be omnipotent, He must have not only unlimited potencies but limited potencies also. Thus to exhibit His omnipotency He displays both. The living entities are endowed with limited potency although they are part of the Lord.. If the Personality of Godhead did not possess both limited and unlimited energies, He could not be called omnipotent.

Detroit 3 Day Harinama at Jazz Fest 2014

Hare KrishnaBy Deva Madhava Das

After trying our luck a few times in different spots within the limits of the 35th annual Detroit Jazz festival, we were finally forced by security (read ‘lead by the benevolent will of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu) to sit just outside the festival, at the corner of Woodward and Jefferson Ave. (Read ‘The busiest intersection in the whole city.’) The sun was beating down on the spot so direct the word ‘hot’ might have been applicable. The cold hardy Detroit devotees were a little apprehensive, but once they were reminded that in 2 months we’d all be begging Sri Sri Radha Kunjabihari to send even a few moments of such sun…. we all settled down and began the yajna.

ISKCON Namahatta in Mayapur reaches 15 Million

Hare KrishnaBy Iksvaku das

On the auspicious day of Radhastami, His Holiness Jayapataka Swami, co-minister of the Congregational Development in ISKCON, congratulated the Namahatta devotees from Sridhama Mayapur for having reached out to a record number of 15 million people in their last 35 years of preaching Krishna Consciousness. This is the result of continuous preaching initiatives aimed at encouraging congregations in their spiritual advancement. From innumerable home programs to large pandals, these preachers have successfully been able to attract this large number of souls to the process of Bhakti by following the instructions of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu: “talk about Krishna, worship Krishna and teach others about Krishna.”

Some No-No’s For ISKCON Management

Hare KrishnaBy Kesava Krsna Dasa

When unwanted types of management are perpetuated, no matter how qualified ISKCON managers might be with people skills and other necessary qualities, their attempts at trying to undo these will be difficult. There are reasons for this. We have seen the ISKCON Strategic forum enthusiastically asking for assistance from able devotees, but this needed assistance will be frustrated if these perpetuations persist.

Ukraine Update

Hare KrishnaBy Niranjana Swami

We have good news and bad news from Ukraine. The good news is that practically all devotees from the Lugansk region have been safely accommodated elsewhere. Meanwhile, the bad news is that as of today, August 29, 2014, it appears that the conflict could very soon be moving into Mariupol, a seaport of 500,000 and home to a very large devotee community. We must be prepared to assist these devotees should the battlegrounds extend into Mariupol and therefore different options for them are already being considered.
