Gold from a ‘dirty’ place – the football field

Hare KrishnaBy Praghosa dasa

I recently read a letter which was eloquently penned by Bhakti Charu Maharaja which really struck me, so much so, I became inspired to write a few words about it. It struck me for a couple reasons, one the simple essence of Maharaja’s letter being the glorification of other devotees, which is always an inspirational meditation to see in action, one devotee glorifying other devotees. The other aspect that I found equally, if not more eye-catching, was an analogy that Maharaja used.

The ToVP Moon is Ever Rising!

Hare KrishnaBy Praghosa dasa

The world we experience often seems so insane and thus the desire for shelter, protection and love is present in all living entities. To perceive the world differently and avail of that protection and shelter, we simply need to accept our dependence on that supreme being who has most recently advented as Sri Krishna Caitanya. Please enjoy this video and allow your insecurities to simply slip away and dissolve into the bliss of loving meditation on our supreme lord.

2014 Vyasa-puja book download now available

Hare KrishnaBy Manorama dasa

Each year, the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust publishes a limited number of copies of a Vyasa-puja book—a collection of homages to Srila Prabhupada from devotees and temples all over the world. Srila Prabhupada’s unique position as the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is significant in numerous ways. Essentially, he is the instructing spiritual master for everyone within ISKCON.

Hell’s Angels

Hare KrishnaBy Prabhupada priya devi dasi

On one of Srila Prabhupada’s visits to London, a young women had inquired, “Srila Prabhupada, do they preach Bhagavad-gita in Hell?” His face was serious as he replied with a rhetorical question, “This London is not Hell?” The woman was puzzled and thought perhaps Srila Prabhupada had not understood her question so she repeated it. Srila Prabhupada responded even more emphatically, “I am saying, this London is not Hell?”

Appreciation of Madhudvisa Das by the ISKCON GBC Executive Committee

Hare KrishnaBy ISKCON GBC Executive Committee

On behalf of the ISKCON Governing Body Commission and the entire International Society for Krishna Consciousness we, the Executive Committee of the GBC, join the chorus of tributes from around the world to honor His Grace Madhudvisa Prabhu, who departed from this world on August 5, 2014. Madhudvisa Prabhu was one of the earliest disciples of His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada and immediately applied his enthusiastic nature to the Sankirtana Movement. As a prominent figure of the original Hari-nama sankirtana groups of devotees in the United States, he would often lead the public chanting and would play the drum for up to ten hours daily. Later, after being chosen by Srila Prabhupada to accompany him when he first toured India with his Western disciples, Srila Prabhupada appreciated his contributions and named him the “Emperor of Sankirtana” [or “kirtan-samart” - the monarch of kirtans].

A Thousand Lectures on the Absolute Truth

Hare KrishnaBy Indradyumna Swami

“Last year,” the young man continued, “I went to Woodstock and met you people there. I went to the Questions and Answers tent and listened attentively. Suddenly I had all the answers to the questions of life that I had been asking. It was as if a light had been turned on. Seriously. I wanted to buy the book that the speaker was quoting from, the Bhagavad Gita, but I had no money. I have been waiting all year to buy the Bhagavad Gita. I was so surprised to find you people in town today. In fact I just walked into this festival by chance.”

My dear Godbrother Madhu-dvisa Prabhu

Hare KrishnaBy Hridayananda das Goswami

One evening, the Berkeley devotees were on the third floor of our center, chanting in the temple room. Suddenly the house began to shake as if there was an earthquake. Our president asked me to go downstairs and see what was happening. I found the cause: Madhu-dvisa Prabhu and the all-brahmacari San Francisco temple had come to visit us and they were doing kirtana downstairs. Among these devotees was the famous Jayananda. The kirtana, led by Madhu-dvisa, was literally shaking a three story house.

Hare Krishna Devotees Celebrate Festival Of Chariots In Leicester, UK

Hare KrishnaBy pukaarnews

Thousands of festival-goers from all over the country pulled a massive 90ft chariot carrying the Deities of Lord Jagannatha (Krishna), his sister Subhadra, and Lord Balarama from the City Centre to Cossington Park, accompanied with music, singing, and dancing. The annual festival organised by ISKCON is the second largest festival of this type in country and has been running for 17 years. For the first time in its history the festival began at the newly acquired Hare Krishna Centre on Granby Street. To start off the procession Sir Peter Soulsby and community leaders smashed coconuts.

Montly Sankirtana Festival (MSF) of Get Sets & GO @ ISV

Hare KrishnaBy Balimardana Dasa

It is not by working hard or by accumulating wealth that one may find satisfaction in this life or the next. Rather, it is one’s purity of purpose and diligence in repeating the transcendental mantra received from the bona fide spiritual master that fulfills all of one’s desires. “O Brahma, do thou practice spiritual association by means of this mantra; then all your desires will be fulfilled.” Sri Brahma-samhita 5.25

An Appointment with Mr. Death

Hare KrishnaBy Vraja Vihari Dasa

As the evening arati started and the deities were greeted amidst loud chanting and the blowing of conch shells, indicating auspiciousness, Rohini Tanaya cast his last loving glance at the devotees and, while prayerfully looking upon the deities, departed from his body. Devotees cried and rejoiced simultaneously, for this was an extraordinary, inspirational departure. Devotees had witnessed that Krishna consciousness is not simply a theory but a practical science. Rohini Tanaya had just shown by his example how a devotee fixed in Krishna consciousness receives Mr. Death cheerfully

Black Holes And Gaping Mouths

Hare KrishnaBy Kesava Krsna Dasa

The famed Time Machine is now a serious inevitability, according to many. One scientist says that he wants to go back to the past to see his deceased father and possibly help him with present-day medicine. If Krishna says that He is Time and is the destroyer of all things, including our karma, then what type of power or technology can oppose this? Going back into the past means to undo karma and to undo history.

ISKCON Boston Hosts Interfaith “Field Trip”

Hare KrishnaBy Bhaktin Elle Mitchell

Dr. Catherine Cornille, Chair of the Department of Theology and Professor of Comparative Theology in Boston College, and author of numerous books on inter-religious dialogue, phoned ISKCON Boston with a request: Could she bring a large group of theologians to the temple on a site visit to experience a non-Western religious tradition? The answer was a strong “Yes!” The devotees were also thrilled to know that Prof. Diana L. Eck, a long-time friend of ISKCON and co-director of the conference, would be among the visiting scholars. Dr. Eck is a leading scholar specializing in religious diversity and inter-faith relations, serves as Professor of Comparative Religions at Harvard University, and is author of several texts exploring India and its bhakti traditions.

Thirteenth Padyatra Winds through Slovenia

Hare KrishnaBy Lomancita Dasa

We just successfuly completed this year’s padayatra. It was our thirteenth. It lasted eighteen blissful days: chanting, dancing, feasting, and serving all the time. Full samadhi! We distributed the holy names, prasada cookies, and books. About thirty participated full time, and the highest peak of devotees was fifty-seven. People in general appreciated the padayatra very much.

Boston’s Mayor Issues “Sri Krishna Janmastami Day” Proclamation

Hare KrishnaBy Bhaktin Elle Mitchell

The Boston center of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, established in 1968 and now known as New Gundica Dham, was one of the most prominent temples in the early years of the Hare Krishna movement. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada set a number of milestones in Boston, distinguishing the yatra’s position as a significant center for the development of Lord Caitanya’s Sankirtana movement in the west. It was at Boston’s Commonwealth Pier in 1965 that Srila Prabhupada first set foot on Western soil, and where he composed his prayer “Markine Bhagavata-dharma”, entreating Lord Krishna for the spiritual deliverance of the western countries. Boston was also where Srila Prabhupada performed the first Brahmanical initiations of western men and women, either in or outside of ISKCON.

TOVP e-Newsletter #3

Hare KrishnaBy TOVP staff

The Mayapur city, Prabhupada said, would be the fulfillment of the desires of the previous acaryas. The city would grow to a population of fifty thousand and would become the spiritual capital of the world. With its gigantic temple in the center and separate quarters for brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisyas, and sudras, the city would be a model for all other cities. The day would come when the world’s cities would be ruined, and humanity would take refuge in cities modeled after Mayapur. The development of Mayapur would mark the beginning of a Krsna conscious world. Thus the influence of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would increase, and His prediction would manifest: “In every town and village My name will be chanted.”

Czech Padayatra 2014

Hare KrishnaBy Nrsimha Caitanya das

Then, a historical moment occurred - after 10 years, our Czech Padayatra was visited by His Holiness Lokanath Swami, the minister for Padayatra! His holy presence was so transcendental and sweet, that we were immediately transferred directly to the spiritual world! He also participated in two evening programs for public, where he addressed people with a talk and he lead lively kirtan. Altogether, we held 121st Czech Padayatra completed! Again it was such a blissful and unforgettable event!

His Grace Madhudvisa das

Hare KrishnaBy Pusta Krishna das

He was honest and admitted how little he knew of Krishna consciousness at the time, but he served in his own infectiously happy mood. He and I spoke rather honestly and openly about our own frailties in life. He never tried to portray himself as a “big, big” self-important person. Rather, he was a salt of the earth kind of person. Very simple hearted. His place in the history of sankirtan is very well established by his own peculiar style of sankirtan chanting of the Holy Names. He was the first to chant the Holy Names very rapidly in a style that became more common throughout the world with the passage of time. I witnessed in Melbourne when I accompanied Srila Prabhupad there that during 1976 that some of those kirtans, Srila Prabhupad would smile gently and pleasingly.

Madhudvisa Prabhu: A Letter in Separation

Hare KrishnaBy Giriraj Swami

All the circumstances surrounding your departure were auspicious. As was your desire, you lived through Ratha-yatra in Los Angeles and sang before all three carts. Then, just two days later, while your caregiver chanted Hare Krishna by your side, you departed—with a smile on your face. You were a great pioneer and champion of Ratha-yatra. During last year’s procession we discussed the importance of following Srila Prabhupada’s instructions in regard to Ratha-yatras, and in our last meeting in your room at New Dvaraka, six weeks ago, you told me how Srila Prabhupada sent you from Juhu to Australia and you introduced Ratha-yatra there.

Stunned by the news and tel. call I just received that he just left his body- that greatest kirtan and book distribution general and beloved son of Srila Prabhupada has retuned to be with Srila Prabhupada. His attendant was chanting Hare Krsna to him as he passed from this world

Alone but not lonely

Hare KrishnaBy Vraja Bihari Das

As a preacher/counsellor, I meet many who are disappointed in life and desperately need emotional healing. Most emotional problems in life originate in feeling a lack of deep, fulfilling relationship and a desperate want for a loving companion. Even in our temple which is over flooded with thousands of devotees, it’s possible to feel lonely; I know a few devotees who have felt lonely at some point of time in life. Besides, I myself when I stay at Borivalli for a few days in a week to write my articles, or when I travel for my preaching services, I feel lonely and am desperate to come back to temple.

Prosperity of the Earth Culture

Hare KrishnaBy Varsana Swami

Cow protection, as set forth by Srila Prabhupada was not merely that the cow and the bull lead a full and natural life, but that they also be jolly, as a member of a family would feel. Cows and bulls are happy to be fed and brushed. While cows like to be milked, the main source of pleasure for the ox has been obscured by the tractor. An ox is a bull who has surrendered his procreative potential, transforming that energy into a submissive and manageable temperament capable of being trained and utilized for agricultural and transportation services. As a father figure he loves to provide for his family of humans by pursuing his occupation in the field which assures a source of income and prosperity to mankind.

Tomatoes from Heaven

Hare KrishnaBy Nityananda Ram Das

ISKCON farms have some great successes, and some great failures too, but with the money ISKCON now has, and the large congregation of young devotees, it has tremendous opportunity for self-sufficient farms. The idea that the modern age has changed the opportunity for simple living and high thinking on farms is not true. Self-sufficiency as it was on 1950’s farms could be easily replicated today by any young and very hard working devotee couple.
