ISKCON GBC Executive Committee’s Letter to Ukrainian Devotee Refugees

Hare KrishnaBy the GBC Executive Committee

On behalf of the Governing Body Commission of ISKCON, please accept our prayers to Lord Krishna for your protection, as well as our deepest affection and concern for your well being. We are following the events in Ukraine in the media with heavy hearts. We have heard directly from Niranjana Maharaja about some of the great challenges, dangers and threats that you have undergone. By the Lord’s mercy many of you have survived close encounters with bomb blasts, militia attacks, and other terrible effects of living with war at your doorsteps. We know that the leaders of ISKCON in Ukraine are doing all that they can to assist you and to offer you spiritual guidance in this difficult time. Many of you have relocated, and have had to leave behind your homes, jobs and temple communities.

By Mina Sharma Dasi

Praghosa Dasa, GBC Head of UK and Ireland, who was attending the event said: “we are operating in a world where communication is king, and where anyone with a mobile phone can generate a news story - this is unprecedented in our history, which is why it has never been more important to know how to work with the media. Given the upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations, we want 2016 to be a standout year for ISKCON and one of the ways we can have the most impact is through effective communications. We want the UK and Ireland to be a leading light and make the next fifty years of ISKCON even better.”

For the pleasure of Srila Prabhupada this article contains the following North American results for the month of April

Sri Ramananda Raya and Rajahmundry Yatra

By Chandan Yatra Das

‘Srila Ramananda Raya was an incarnation of the gopi Visakha. Since Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was Lord Krishna Himself, there was naturally an awakening of love between Visakha and Krishna. Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the combination of Srimati Radharani and Krishna, and the gopi Visakha is a principal gopi assisting Srimati Radharani. Thus the natural love between Ramananda Raya and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu awakened and they embraced.’

Resting The Jiva-Fall / No-Fall Case

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

Is this a daring and overconfident claim? It seems to be an assertion of finality on the fall / no-fall issue. Does this risk jumping over Srila Prabhupada and our previous acaryas? The discussions on this matter continue to produce no outright winners of the debate. Such finality may ‘bore’ the philosopher within us, but we cannot deny its profoundness. Who does not want to know their true origin? Ancestry firms help people trace their family lineage and possible place of origin through birth-given names. By providing one’s DNA sample one might learn of more interesting information involving genetic links to ancestors going back thousands of years. We can be forgiven if this natural curiosity spills over onto the spiritual frontier.

WSN March 2014 - World Sankirtan Newsletter

Here’s some big news from the world of book distribution. For the first time Cuba has reported a book distribution score! I have been hearing about devotees from Miami going there to hold programs with favorable people and even going out on book distribution. Now they have reported scores. This is very auspicious. People of Spanish decent are generally quite pious, as Srila Prabhupada noted when he visited Mexico and Venezuela. Cubans are no exception. Some very nice devotees in Miami are Cuban.

The Importance of Vaishnava Seva

By Madhavananda Das

Obtaining the mercy of a pure devotee is an absolute necessity for those who aspire for the service and association of the Supreme Lord in the spiritual world. Srila Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami writes in madhya-līlā 22.51. One may doubt whether the servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead will attain perfection, but there is absolutely no doubt that those who are attached to serving his devotees will attain perfection.

Should Women be Called “Prabhu”, “Mataji”, or “Devi”?

By the Governing Body Commission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

Whereas in ISKCON men had generally been taught to see all women other than their wives as mother; Whereas in more recent times a practice has gained momentum that women should not be called “Mataji,” but “Prabhu;” Whereas the word “Prabhu” is traditionally used to address men; Whereas one section of ISKCON considers addressing women as “Prabhu” to have no cultural or linguistic backing, or any evidentiary or experiential support from Srila Prabhupada’s teachings; Whereas another section of ISKCON cites conversational or correspondence-based evidence that Srila Prabhupada addressed female disciples as “Prabhu;” Whereas there is increasing discord among the proponents of these two opinions; Whereas all initiated women also have the title “Devi” as part of their spiritual name, an address that could also apply to the non-initiated

Srila Prabhupada Slokas - Tracing the Unknown

By Hari Parshad Das

Most of us have seen the book named ‘Śrīla Prabhupāda Ślokas’, compiled by The Bhaktivedanta Archives. Many devotees carry this book as a reference for quoting verses that Srila Prabhupada would often like to cite. The sources for most of the quotes in the book have been specified. At the end of the book, however, is a section named ‘Quotes from Unknown Sources’. Here is a small attempt to trace most of those quotes to their original sources:

The Son of the Sun

By Chaitanya Charan das

The Mahabharata is a fascinating book with many of its characters not clearly black or clearly white, but multiple shades of grey. Karna is an intriguing character – virtuous, yet choosing the side of the vicious Kauravas; born as a warrior, but treated lifelong as charioteer’s son; great archer, but defeated and killed in a fight with another great archer. Let’s see where he falls on the spectrum of black to white through a series of question-answers.

Who is “The mother of all padayatras?

By Lokanatha Swami

Padayatra India is often affectionately referred to as “the mother of all padayatras.”This is because it has provided inspiration for devotees and leaders alike since its inception in 1976, and more especially since the phenomenal 1984 walk from Dwaraka to Mayapur. Padayatra India has nurtured and encouraged many devotees to organize walks in their own countries or to eagerly participate in them, making padayatra a worldwide phenomenon. The use of bullock carts has also served as a motivation, particularly in Western countries, where the idea was initially thought to be impractical and impossible.

A Little Background to Guideline 315: Chanting of the Holy Names of Srimati Radharani

By Praghosa dasa

“So our request is. Everyone who is present here. Today is Radhastami. So pray to Radharani. And She is hare, hara. This hare, this word, is Radharani. Hara, Radharani. Radha or hara the same thing. So Hare Krsna. So we are praying to Radharani, “My Mother, Radharani, and Krsna.” Hare Krsna. “O Krsna, O the Lord.” Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, the same thing, repetition. “O Radharani, O Krsna.” “O Radha-Krsna.” “Radhe-Krsna” or “Hare Krsna,” the same thing. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare. Again addressing, “O Krsna, O Krsna, O Radharani.” Hare Rama. The same thing, again. Hare Rama. Rama is also Krsna. Rama is Rama, Rama is Balarama. They are all Krsna. Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. So this repetition of addressing Radha and Krsna or Hare Krsna is to pray, “My dear Lord, the, and the energy, the spiritual energy of the Lord, kindly engage me in Your service.” That’s all. “I am now embarrassed with this material service. Please engage me in Your service.”
