Gold from a ‘dirty’ place – the football field

Hare KrishnaBy Praghosa dasa

I recently read a letter which was eloquently penned by Bhakti Charu Maharaja which really struck me, so much so, I became inspired to write a few words about it. It struck me for a couple reasons, one the simple essence of Maharaja’s letter being the glorification of other devotees, which is always an inspirational meditation to see in action, one devotee glorifying other devotees. The other aspect that I found equally, if not more eye-catching, was an analogy that Maharaja used.

In the 10th century Porbandar was known as “Pauravelakul” and thereafter renamed as “Sudamapuri”.

Reconciling Seemingly Outrageous Figures

Hare KrishnaBy Madhavananda Das

One should not argue that such a large number of cows could not possibly fit into the thirty-two square mile area of Vrindavan, because the dhāma is unlimited by the inconceivable energy of the Lord. Even a small portion of the holy dhāma is sufficient to accommodate billions of universes each measuring fifty million miles in diameter. Krishna showed this to Brahma in a later chapter.

My Children in Mayapur!

By Jai Sita Rani Devi Dasi

I never expected my children to take up Krishna Consciousness so seriously. All I wanted was for them to get a holistic education both spiritually and academically. However, on their own they started chanting 16 rounds and aspiring for their guru. And as an icing on the cake, my 16 year old son got initiated there as well!! It was just amazing.

Exceptional security measures by the police for the huge crowd expected for the Iskcon Rathayatra Sunday in Baroda

By The Times of India

The Yatra organized by ISKCON temple is celebrated with fervour in Vadodara as thousands of Barodians turn up on city roads to offer prayers to the lord. Thousands of kilograms of ‘prasad’ are distributed to devotees en route apart from saplings and fruits. Considering the huge crowd that the Yatra attracts, the city police take additional security measures. “We have already deployed companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the city. Also, our entire police force will be on guard on the day of Yatra,” city police commissioner Satish Sharma said.

The 400 plus devotees bore an incredulous look on their faces when the deities of were taken into the holy waters of Cauvery, wondering if the deities were really enjoying all the splashing around. But the devotees, once they entered the waters, certainly had a swell time like young enthusiastic kids gone wild.

Watch Hare Krishnas Take Over the Streets With Some Massive Chariots

By John Cathcart

Not since the Festival of Colors have we seen anything quite this, well, colorful: on Saturday, the 39th annual Parade of Chariots brought thousands of Hare Krishna devotees — and three giant chariots — into the streets of Fifth Avenue for a parade that ended with a jamboree in Washington Square Park.

WSN May 2014 - World Sankirtan Newsletter

By Vijaya Dasa

While I was giving a book distribution seminar recently in Santiago, Chili, a devotee described an interesting incident that happened many years ago. A devotee was distributing books, and the books were going out much faster than usual. He usually would take a certain amount of books, and they would last a reasonable amount of time. Then he would go back to the temple. But this one day they were going out so quickly that he ran out much earlier than he expected.

Back to Godhead means…

By Patitapavana dasa

Back to Godhead means back to the Head God, Krishna. So says His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada savior of the whole world in a lecture on SB 1.5.29 in Vrindavana (10-8-74) Here is the context: “So we are atma, and Krishna is also atma. But He is Paramatma. We are isvara. Krishna is also isvara. But He’s Paramesvara. Therefore we have named “Godhead” purposefully, not “God.” We don’t say “Back to God.” We say, “Back to Godhead.”"Head” means the chief. Everyone can claim that “I am God,” because everyone has got some power, little power. But not the supreme power. That is Krishna.”

New NV Garden Manager Takes Step Closer to Sustainable Vision

By Madhava Smullen

Local food production was, of course, a major goal for New Vrindaban’s founder Srila Prabhupada, and was emphasized in the community from its inception in 1968 until 1979. But in the 1980s and ‘90s it began to taper off and then all but disappeared, until a smaller scale of farming was re-introduced in 1998 by the Small Farm Training Center.

ISKCON Baroda’s 33rd annual Jagannath Rathayatra festival 2014

By Basu Ghosh Das

The crowd gathered at the beginning of the procession continues to be quite large and impressive. There was a group of thousands that accompanied the Rath from the Railway station, through Sayajiganj, in front of the Maharaja Sayajirao University campus, to the Kala Ghoda (”black horse”) Circle, near the Sayaji Bagh (public garden, named after locally famous Maharaja (King) Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III - who lived from 1863-1939)

Gold Euphoria In Indonesia!

By Bhakti Raghava Swami

One devotee from Bali became so inspired that he committed for 16 Golden Bricks on the spot and paid the full US $ 26,930 the next day. This inspired others to also come forward to make their pledges and payments. As we went from temple to temple in Bali, we also distributed the Rs. 1,000 ToVP Currency Notes. Our first temple program in Klung Kung scored 18 notes, in Gianyar, 9, in Singaraja 28, in Radha Gopinath an astounding 124, in Radha Raseavara, 23, in Jagannath Gauranga, the last 20 notes we had. We exhausted all the ToVP Currency Notes we had.

My First Puri Rathayatra

By Deena Bandhu dasa

The next day was Gundicha Marjana. Many times I have cleaned the temple from top to bottom in whatever temple I was in. But today we all went to do Gundicha Marjana at the very site where Lord Chaitanya had personally done it five hundred years before. We were all very excited. Unfortunately, they don’t allow foreigners inside. So I told Bhadra Charu Prabhu, a very nice devotee who was in charge, to get me a couple of baskets so we could at least clean the front entrance. All around the entrance they were selling brooms and clay pots, but no baskets. But somehow he got a couple.

The Chorus Of One-siders

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

It is known that Srila Prabhupada was not fond of ambiguities like “maybe, perhaps, could be…” and so on, and we often follow suit to express ourselves in absolutist terms, convinced of our infallible statements. The problem with this is that in the face of Srila Prabhupada’s varied and nuanced teachings our utmost one-sided certainties can expose us as certain and total fools who actually expose our political and biased natures.

Waves of Sankirtana

By Sri Ramadasa

Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, The Seventh Goswami, pioneered the spread of Lord Chaitanya’s teachings in the West, sending copies of his works to Ralph Waldo Emerson in the USA and to Reinhold Rost in Europe in 1880. He is the first acarya in our sampradaya to propagate the waves of the nectarean ocean of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s unparalleled divine mission to places outside India. Following in his lead, His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada had translated, printed, and published volumes of sastras to propagate the mission of Lord Chaitanya throughout the world.

We Are Their Good Fortune!

By Parasuram das

Once on a morning walk in St James’ Park in London (1972/3) after passing a hippy sleeping on a park bench, Srila Prabhupada said “By good fortune they can all come to Krsna Consciousness”
Wishing to understand further what His Divine Grace meant by ‘good fortune’ I said: “Srila Prabhupada, we understand from your books and teachings that nothing happens by chance, can you please explain what you mean by ‘good fortune’ After walking on for about a minute, all of a sudden Srila Prabhupada stopped, turned and looked me directly in the face, and stated firmly: “We are their good fortune”

By Mina Sharma

On Sunday 15 June, London’s most famous landmarks were brought to life in a dazzling display of sound, music and colour, as thousands of devotees from across the country came to the streets of London’s West End to celebrate the 46th annual Rathayatra festival. Three beautifully decorated Rathayatra chariots carrying Lord Jagannatha, Lord Baladeva and Lady Subhadra, deities from ISKCON London’s Soho Street temple, began their journey in Hyde Park and were pulled by hand to greet a huge gathering of devotees, visitors and tourists in the city’s iconic Trafalgar Square.

Tamala…

By Deena Bandhu Das

No one imagined our beautiful stout tamala tree would leave us so soon, but one day he fell to the ground and was gone. No one could imagine that our Tamala would leave us so soon, but one day he left us in the Holy Dhama and was gone. Now we sit here and weep with only memories of our Tamalas to keep us alive.
