ISKCON GBC Executive Committee’s Letter to Ukrainian Devotee Refugees

Hare KrishnaBy the GBC Executive Committee

On behalf of the Governing Body Commission of ISKCON, please accept our prayers to Lord Krishna for your protection, as well as our deepest affection and concern for your well being. We are following the events in Ukraine in the media with heavy hearts. We have heard directly from Niranjana Maharaja about some of the great challenges, dangers and threats that you have undergone. By the Lord’s mercy many of you have survived close encounters with bomb blasts, militia attacks, and other terrible effects of living with war at your doorsteps. We know that the leaders of ISKCON in Ukraine are doing all that they can to assist you and to offer you spiritual guidance in this difficult time. Many of you have relocated, and have had to leave behind your homes, jobs and temple communities.

Juvenile crime, Dry asceticism and Oppressive elders represented by Vatsasura

By Shyamananda Dasa

The hordes of demons killed by the Lord during His pastimes on the earthly realm represent the different anarthas we have stock piled in our hearts during our long sojourn in the material world in different species of life. The demon named Vatsasura who took the form of a calf and tried to kill Sri Krishna was killed by the Lord during His boyhood pastimes in Vrndavana. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura in an article titled ‘Vatsaura’ reveals an esoteric meaning of the Lord’s killing of this calf-demon

Sound Systems Guideline

By the Governing Body Commission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

The GBC Body hereby encourages ISKCON managers to monitor the levels of the sound systems in use at their centers. The sound system should be adjusted so that it sounds clear, sweet and attractive as opposed to overly loud, distorted or painful. Whenever possible, the sound pressure levels should regularly be measured using sound pressure level meters to make sure that dangerous sound pressure levels are prevented. Such meters are available on mobile devices.

Seed Of Frustration

By Srila Prabhupada

So therefore the real thing is that everything belongs to Krsna. We are artificially enjoying the stolen property. Therefore if you go on enjoying like that, then this frustration will come. But before coming to that frustration, if we return this property to Krsna, then we become happy. So best thing is to return everything to Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness. And you will not be a loser. You will be gainer, just like Bali Maharaja. Actually, if you think, everything belongs to Krsna. Nothing belongs to you. This is maya. Krsna’s property you are thinking, “mine.”

“Back to Godhead” means Back to Godhead

By Sita Rama dasa

The original home of the living entity and the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the spiritual world. In the spiritual world both the Lord and the living entities live together very peacefully. Since the living entity remains engaged in the service of the Lord, they both share a blissful life in the spiritual world. However, when the living entity, misusing his tiny independence, wants to enjoy himself, he falls down into the material world

Understanding the difference between science and scientism

By Chaitanya Charan das

Consider the experience of seeing a beautiful sunset. We can directly experience the beauty of the sunset. But can any scientific experiment measure that beauty? Science could perhaps measure some parameters like the intensity of the sunlight, but such measurements would do little to convey or explain the actual experience of the beauty.

Sri Sri Tota Gopinatha Temple And Sri Gadadhara Pandita

By Chandan Yatra Das

Sri Tota Gopinatha is exquisitely beautiful self-manifested Deity of Lord Sri Krishna. Sri Tota Gopinatha is also a most unique Deity because He is the only Krishna Deity in the world “sitting down” and playing His flute. Sri Tota Gopinatha has such a charismatic bewitching quality that draws one to His darshana over and over again. Srila Vrindavana Thakura extols His power: “Even an extreme atheist will be changed upon seeing the Deity of Gopinatha.”

What is the difference between the past ages and the present age?

By Chaitanya Charan das

Lord Chaitanya, the Kali-yuga incarnation of Krishna, inaugurated this golden age and Srila Prabhupada expanded its golden influence all over the world by his tireless outreach efforts. Each one of us has the fortune to receive and share this divine legacy and thereby become models and messengers of integrity amidst this age of perversity.

Female Diksa Gurus

By the Governing Body Commission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

The subject of Vaisnavis initiating in ISKCON is further tabled until additional discussion at the 2014 GBC Midterm Meeting. In the meantime the GBC Eexecutive Committee will work on the following process:
1. Creating a committee of devotees who have no pre-determined view on this topic who will gather documents from all sources on the subject of female diksa-gurus.
2. The committee will sort, summarize, and categorize all documentation. Categories could include Srila Prabhupada’s quotations, varnasrama-dharma, history within our sampradaya and other Vaisnava sampradayas, etc.

Lenin would be proud of us!

By Ghanashyam das

On wednesday as part of our initiative to distribute prasadam at least once a week to the residents Navadwipa we set out to the village on the other side of the Jalangi river named Lenin colony. West Bengal for so many years was governed by the communist party hence the reference to one of its icons - Lenin. Not sure if he ever had piping hot kitchari for lunch but all the residents of the village named after him certainly relished it with great enthusiasm.

Why I am not vegan

By Priyavrata Das

Consuming dairy from a loved, respected and protected cow is perfectly in line with the essential ideology of veganism — non-violence. But if you’re a fanatical vegan, you won’t bring yourself to accept such a possibility. So it is best to avoid trying to press that ideal into a new form of the ideology, but rather accept the fact that veganism in the strictest sense of the term is flawed.

For him, Back to Godhead was both the means and the end

By Chaitanya Charan das

Lokanath Swami: Baladeva Das was not just a tireless BTG distributor; he was also a prominent supporter and fundraiser for the Prabhupada Ghat project in Pandharpur and an active preacher in the Alandi-Pandharpur Dindi yatra (an annual mass pilgrimage of tens of thousands that lasts for nearly a fortnight). By his exemplary devotion, I am sure that he returned back to godhead.

Finding Brahminical Candidates to Teach Four Legs of Dharma

By Mayesvara Dasa

At the present moment, society is in a chaotic condition, and everyone has given up the cultivation of spiritual life, which is especially meant for the brāhmaṇas. Because spiritual culture has been stopped all over the world, there is now an emergency, and therefore it is now time to train those who are considered lower and condemned, so that they may become brāhmaṇas and take up the work of spiritual progress. The spiritual progress of human society has been stopped, and this should be considered an emergency.

Plans for Increasing Book Distribution

By the Governing Body Commission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

While ISKCON, the GBC, and the BBT are independent entities and thus the GBC cannot instruct the BBT trustees, the GBC humbly appeals to the BBT trustees to kindly get involved in pushing this process forward and making sure that the development of these plans actually happens. The Indian BBT and Indian GBCs are exempted from this resolution as they are already doing such powerful book distribution. Of course, they are welcomed and encouraged to present a plan for the coming year if they wish.

The preaching has already begun in the Temple of Vedic Planetarium

By Sadbhuja Das

Stories of preaching the glories of the TOVP usually conjure images of sannyasis speaking to crowds of devotees, or Ambarisha prabhu addressing rooms full of eager donors. How often does the audience think of Bengali laborers? Interestingly, it is this section of the Mayapur community who are often overlooked. Beyond the glories of artistic creations, architectural marvels and engineering feats beat the hearts of a population of Indian workers who put together the pieces of this amazing puzzle.

The Iskcon Cow Protection Culture

By Dusyanta dasa

Because Iskcon is a spiritual holistic society it means Iskcon can demonstrate the alternative to capitalism. When defining the original and conclusive purposes of Iskcon Srila Prabhupada also included a lifestyle principle as well as many other spiritual practices. The 6th purpose of Iskcon is aimed and directed to all members of Iskcon towards their lifestyle so that the whole of Iskcon is single pointedly and united to gaining these goals of life.

Ratha Yatra in Tallahssee 2014

By Ananga Manjari Devi

Our colorful presentation was very well received by the audience of thousands who enthusiastically waved, danced and gave us many smiles and thumbs-up as we danced by. The float that pulled the Lords’ Chariot was covered in a beautiful bouquet of leaves and flowers and featured a huge 9 foot high Lord Chaitanya, all designed by Luz Marina. The whole Rathyatra presentation was awe inspiring for the participants as well as the observers.

The Qualification to Hear

By Madhavananda Das

In this age of instant communication, we expect immediate answers to our questions. From nearly anywhere in the world we can google from our cell phones and in seconds find out whatever facts we are interested in. Moreover, there are hundreds of translations of vaiṣṇava literatures available today, including descriptions of intimate and esoteric pastimes of Krishna and the gopīs.

The Iskcon non violence myth

By Dusyanta Dasa

The whole subject of violence within the dairy industry was the basis for spawning the alternate diet of vegans. Rather than embracing the positive instructions of cow protection by following the universal aspects of the definitions and goals of cow protection an alternative diet was sought. Bearing in mind the rather narrow criteria of considering violence in the dairy industry as an exclusive situation that is not applicable to any other type of farming, food production and horticultural enterprise the Iskcon conclusions are debated practically on a yearly basis.

These are the tests

By Srila Prabhupada

This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. You don’t require to attempt for political reason and make Kṛṣṇa consciousness secondary. Therefore we say that if people, not all, if some percentage of the whole population of the world become Kṛṣṇa conscious, then all the problems of the world will be solved.

Visit to Angkor Wat in Cambodia

By Basu Ghosh Das

A thousand years ago, the Hindu Raja (King) Jayavarman II, built numerous large elaborately decorated stone temples of Lord Vishnu, in the area that today is known internationally as Angkor Wat. Angkor is a dissimilation of the Samskrita word “nagar”, that is “city” in English. From nagar came “nakor” and then “Angkor” in modern Khmer, the language of Cambodia. Raja Jayavarman II constructed his capitol in this place a thousand years ago, and now the ruins of nearly 250 Hindu temples remain, in various stages of deterioration, after a millennium.
