By Radhanath SwamiPatanjali writes in the Yoga Sutras that attachment arises from remembering past pleasant activities. As we remember the pleasure of these activities, we become attached to doing them again. Detachment works in a similar way: we remember the pain of past activities and we thus detach from them. If your brain links pain with activity in the past, as well as in the present and the future, you will give it up. It then becomes a neural response because you feel the pain in your nervous system. It is no longer information; you simply can't act that way again.

By Srutadeva dasThe kirtana was uproarious as Prabhupada entered the airport with the devotees. He was leaving New York after their first, wonderful Ratha-yatra (July 1976). The kirtana grew more intense as he went through the security check. Hari Sauri, Guru dasa, and I followed behind. In the waiting lounge, Srila Prabhupada took a seat and kindly motioned for Guru dasa to sit next to him. A well-dressed man seated on Prabhupada's other side, noticing that there were others with Srila Prabhupada, very politely moved to another seat. Prabhupada again very...

By Indradyumna SwamiThe captain eventually announced that we were approaching Irkutsk but would have to circle the airport until some fog had dispersed. Some time later the two stewardesses approached me. "The captain is asking you to pray to God for all of us," one of them said. "We are running out of fuel," said the other, "and we can't circle the airport much longer." They stood waiting. "Well," said one of them, "are you going to pray?" I hesitated. Then I joined my palms, closed my eyes, and said a short prayer. When I finished, they left to tell the captain. Suddenly the plane v...

By Urmila Devi DasiCan one find happiness in this world? For most of us what we call “happiness” is the temporary mitigation of distress, or sadness. Without sadness, there is practically no meaning to happiness in a material conception of life. First, all that we term "happiness" depends on some sort of prior suffering. We enjoy eating because we feel the pain of hunger; without any hunger or appetite, eating will bring us no pleasure, no matter how tasty and well prepared the food. We find ...

By Sutapa dasWith a sparkle in his eye and a look of disbelief the man replied: “Amazing! I’ve been looking for you guys!” He went on to explain how he had received one of our books, read it cover to cover, and begun practicing mantra meditation… all by himself. He has never had any contact with a Hare Krishna community, temple, or practicing devotee. He simply read the book, became convinced and proceeded to string his own beads. Now he carries those beads with him everywhere he goes, quietly whispering t...

By Ravindra Svarupa dasaSelves are beings that experience, centers of consciousness, subjects. Matter does not experience; it is without subjectivity, it is completely an object. Selves live; matter is lifeless. When the selves enter the alien, material energy, they acquire and animate bodies ma& out of lifeless matter. Driven by a desire to forget Krishna and their relation to Him, they identify themselves with bodies of matter- In this way the self becomes a divided being.

By Vijaya das Look what New Delhi did: 641,898 book points! And look what Juhu did: 453,396 book points! Incredible. And Mayapur: 325,423 book points. And look what the simple temple, Sri Sri Radha-Gopinath in Chowpatti, did: 309,661 book points--amazing. All of these temples increased by 999% above their monthly average. I think the book distributors in these temples were in samadhi, especially Madhusundara Prabhu in New Delhi who did 31,410 book points. He should be in the book distributors hall of fame if such a hall ever manifests.

By Prabhupada priya ddWho will not steer a small child away from a fire? Any sane person will do it, even if he is a complete stranger. No one will just sit there and watch him get burnt, especially not someone who considers himself religious. So who will not jump up to steer these ignorant people away from hell. It is so easy; just give them a book, some prasada, the holy name.
