In this seminar on “Jaiva Dharma,” Bhanu Swami delves into the concept of nithya karma, or eternal duty, which is synonymous with bhakti (devotion) in relation to society. He explains how some devotees disconnect from societal obligations, especially in India, where the traditional varna and ashrama systems are present. He contrasts the roles of different levels of devotees—kanishtha (beginner), madhyama (intermediate), and uttama (advanced)—highlighting their varying understanding of devotion, knowledge, and social conduct. Bhakti’s true essence, according to Bhanu Swami, transcends mere ritualistic worship, requiring deeper philosophical knowledge and respect for other devotees. Without progressing beyond the kanishtha stage, one cannot achieve the ultimate goal of prema (pure love of God). The importance of association with knowledgeable devotees for spiritual advancement is emphasized, as well as the role of pure bhakti in achieving higher spiritual states.
