Reading, July 26 – The ISKCON Reading congregation marked a milestone with the celebration of their 12th annual Rathayatra, attracting more than 7,000 visitors throughout the day.

The festivities began in Forbury Gardens, where the beautifully decorated chariot of Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra Devi set off on a joyful procession through Reading’s main high street. Accompanied by lively kirtana and dancing, the colourful parade brought a festive spirit to the heart of the town. There was a separate small chariot for the children.

Special guests included the Honourable Mayor of Reading, Dr Alice Mpofu-Coles, His Holiness Mahavishnu Swami Maharaj, and His Grace Dayal Mora prabhu, Temple President of ISKCON Soho, His Grace Adikarta prabhu, His Grace Tribhangananda prabhu. Along with other dignitaries, they participated in breaking coconuts and sweeping in front of the chariot before it began its journey – a traditional gesture of devotion.

The day offered a rich variety of experiences. Three hours of cultural performances showcased music, dance, and drama inspired by the Vedic tradition. Around 700 attendees took part in chanting one round of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra on japa beads.

Visitors enjoyed henna painting, face painting, sari draping, and a dedicated children’s tent with engaging activities for young festival-goers. The Rathayatra Exhibit Tent provided insights into the festival’s spiritual significance and highlighted ISKCON Reading’s local events and community programs.

Behind the scenes, around 200 dedicated volunteers helped bring the festival to life. More than 80 offerings of bhoga (sanctified food) were lovingly prepared for Lord Jagannath. Over 5,000 plates of prasadam (free vegetarian meals) were distributed, and many books by Srila Prabhupada were shared with the public, spreading the message of Krishna consciousness.

Once again, the Rathayatra transformed the heart of Berkshire into a vibrant celebration of spirituality and joy, touching the lives of all who attended.
