In this class, HG Narayani Devi Dasi explores Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 4.29.32, the verse that explains the conditioned soul’s struggle in material existence. The verse describes how the living entity becomes trapped by the forces of time, karma, and repeated suffering, while remaining forgetful of the Supreme Lord.
Building on this verse, the threefold miseries of material life (tāpa-traya) are explored, and how they affect every living being:
• Ādhyātmika — miseries arising from the body and mind
• Ādhibhautika — miseries caused by other living entities
• Ādhidaivika — miseries caused by higher forces such as nature, climate, and destiny
Drawing from the teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda and Nārada Muni (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 7.15.24), the class discusses practical and scriptural methods to counteract each category of suffering:
• How good behavior and freedom from envy counteract adhibhautika miseries
• How meditation and inner absorption address adhidaivika disturbances
• How regulated practices such as prāṇāyāma and discipline of the mind and body help manage adhyātmika suffering
Most importantly, the class emphasizes that real relief from suffering does not come from avoidance, denial, or material solutions, but from Krishna consciousness, surrender, and devotional service, which gradually lift one beyond identification with temporary conditions.
