ISKCON Navi Mumbai Launches India’s First Vedic Integrative Oncology Programme — Swastha NavJeevan
Inaugurated by the Governor of Maharashtra with 200+ participants, the Holistic Cancer Healing Retreat (HCHR) unites AYUSH wisdom with evidence-based integrative oncology — offered entirely free of charge
On the morning of 30th May 2026, more than 200 cancer patients, caregivers, and survivors gathered at ISKCON Navi Mumbai — the Glory of Maharashtra, the second largest ISKCON temple in the world — for an event that marked a quiet but historic milestone in Indian healthcare.
The Holistic Cancer Healing Retreat (HCHR) — the inaugural programme of Swastha NavJeevan (SNJ), a new initiative of the Bhaktivedanta College of Vedic Education (BVCE) & Bhaktivedant Ayurvedic Healing and Research Centre, the educational and healthcare wing of ISKCON Navi Mumbai — was inaugurated by His Excellency the Governor of Maharashtra. Its purpose: to bring the full power of India’s Vedic healing traditions, integrated with the latest evidence-based integrative oncology science, to people fighting one of the hardest battles a human being can face — and to do so entirely free of charge.

HCHR is not an alternative medicine programme. It is something the global medical establishment is only now beginning to systematically embrace: integrative oncology — the structured, evidence-based use of non-pharmacological interventions alongside conventional cancer treatment, designed to improve quality of life, reduce symptom burden, support mental resilience, and strengthen the body’s own healing capacity.

The programme is anchored by a shloka from the Sushruta Samhita— the ancient Vedic surgical text — which defines a truly healthy person not merely as one free from disease, but as one whose doshas, agni, dhatu, mala, and soul are in harmonious equilibrium. It is a definition of health that modern medicine is only now beginning to rediscover.
Swastha NavJeevan’s operational framework — the 2H·2R·2L model — is built on exactly this expanded understanding of healing. HCHR addresses the full personhood of every patient, not merely their pathology.
The science supporting this approach is robust. Multiple randomised controlled trials published in JAMA Oncology, The Lancet Oncology, and Journal of Clinical Oncology have demonstrated that yoga, meditation, evidence-based nutrition, and mind-body practices reduce anxiety and depression in cancer patients, lower fatigue severity, improve sleep quality, and — in preliminary studies — modulate biomarkers of inflammation and immune function. Institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, and The Royal Marsden now prescribe these interventions as an integrated component of standard oncology care.
HCHR aligns its programme design with guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) — the same guidelines that govern care at the world’s foremost cancer institutions.

The HCHR initiative is a natural expression of ISKCON’s deepest values. HH Sura Das Pr, Temple President of ISKCON Navi Mumbai and the institutional sponsor of HCHR, set the tone from the outset: this programme would be offered unconditionally, at zero cost, as an act of seva to those in most need.

The programme also carries the formal partnership of ACTREC — Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (part of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai) — India’s foremost cancer research institution. ACTREC’s AYUSH In-Charge Dr. Vikram Gota and Medical Oncology Head Dr. Amit Joshi are collaborating on a prospective randomised controlled trial to rigorously measure HCHR’s outcomes against validated clinical instruments.
What HCHR Delivers: Four Sessions, One Whole Person
The inaugural HCHR retreat was structured across four transformative sessions, each addressing a dimension that cancer profoundly disrupts:
Body: Evidence-based nutrition for oncology, yoga asanas adapted for cancer patients, breathwork, and movement therapy
Mind: Guided meditation, stress reduction techniques rooted in both modern psychoneuroimmunology and Vedic practice, anxiety and depression management
Intelligence: Understanding cancer — removing fear through knowledge, navigating treatment decisions with clarity, building health literacy
Soul: Consciousness-based healing, the Bhagavad-gita’s teachings on the nature of the self beyond the body, finding purpose and meaning in the face of illness
Participants are enrolled in the Swastha NavJeevan 30-Day Challenge — a structured, app-supported post-retreat programme that extends and deepens the retreat’s practices into daily life, with daily guided practices, self-monitoring tools, and validated outcome assessments at Day 0, Day 15, and Day 30.
Outcome measurement employs internationally validated instruments including the FACT-G (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy — General), HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), FACIT-Fatigue, FACIT-Sp (Spiritual Well-Being), PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), FCRI-SF (Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory), and the Charlson Comorbidity Index — tools used in publications in JCO, The Lancet, and comparable journals.

For those familiar with Srila Prabhupada’s vision, there is nothing surprising about ISKCON standing at this frontier. The inaugural event drew the presence and support of prominent dignitaries, including the late Shri Ramseth Thakur (Former Member of Parliament), whose personal commitment to this initiative — including a founding endowment — has made HCHR’s permanent institutional establishment possible.
