Festival of Chariots Brings Joy and Unity to the City Chelmsford, 14 June 2026 – The second annual Chelmsford Rathayatra, also known as the Festival of Chariots, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and community spirit on Sunday, 14 June 2026.
The event attracted over 1,200 attendees and marked a historic occasion for the city as the Rathayatra procession took place on Chelmsford High Street for the first time.
The festival was honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Chelmsford and her husband, along with Chelmsford MP Marie Goldman and her husband, Simon Goldman. The celebrations commenced with a traditional coconut-breaking ceremony performed by the Mayor and MP as an auspicious offering to inaugurate the festival.
The procession was filled with vibrant music, devotional kirtan singing, and joyful dancing. Participants of all ages joined in the celebrations, creating a lively and uplifting atmosphere throughout the route. The distinguished guests also actively participated in the procession and shared in the festive spirit alongside the community.
People from diverse cultural backgrounds, faiths, and age groups attended the event. Families, children, local residents, and visitors all came together to celebrate, reflecting the rich diversity and unity of Chelmsford.
The festival programme also featured a variety of stage performances, including traditional dances, cultural presentations, and dramatic performances.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their appreciation for the vibrant atmosphere, cultural experiences, and sense of community. Chelmsford City Council also welcomed the event, recognising its significance as the first Rathayatra procession ever held on the city’s High Street.
A major highlight of the festival was the free distribution of vegetarian food to more than 1,200 attendees. Visitors also enjoyed a refreshing traditional drink known as Nannari juice, which proved popular throughout the day.
Several community and cultural tents complemented the celebrations, offering activities and experiences for visitors. These included a snacks tent, henna art and face painting, mantra meditation sessions, and the distribution of Vedic literature and books.
The success of Chelmsford Rathayatra 2026 demonstrated the growing popularity of the Festival of Chariots in the city and highlighted the power of cultural celebrations to bring people together in friendship, harmony, and joy. Organisers and attendees alike look forward to building on this success in the years to come.
