The ISKCON of Guyana Hare Krishna Study Centre in Cummings Lodge, Georgetown, will host the Hare Krishna Legacy Festival 2026 from July 8 to 12. The five-day celebration will mark several important milestones in the history of ISKCON, its mission in Guyana, and the growth of Krishna consciousness in the Georgetown and Demerara region.
The festival will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, 50 years of ISKCON in Guyana, 20 years of preaching service in Georgetown, East Coast Demerara, and East Bank Demerara, 20 years of Ratha-yatra celebrations in the area, and the 10th anniversary of the Hare Krishna Study Centre.
The program is expected to bring together devotees, well-wishers, families, youth, community members, and visiting guests from Guyana and abroad. Activities during the festival will include kirtan, bhajans, spiritual presentations, cultural performances, devotional drama, classical dance, children’s activities, historical reflections, Ratha-yatra, and the free distribution of vegetarian prasadam.
The opening program will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at the Hare Krishna Study Centre. This evening will focus on the 60th anniversary of ISKCON, founded in New York City in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. The program will reflect on how Srila Prabhupada’s mission grew from a small storefront on the Lower East Side of New York into a worldwide spiritual movement dedicated to sharing the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.
On Thursday, July 9, the festival will commemorate 50 years of ISKCON in Guyana while also recognizing Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary. This program will highlight the development of Krishna consciousness in Guyana and the devotional service that has continued across generations through public chanting, festivals, temple worship, educational activities, youth engagement, and community outreach.
On Friday, July 10, the evening program will focus on 20 years of preaching activities in Georgetown, East Coast Demerara, and East Bank Demerara. This milestone recognizes the early efforts that helped develop a steady devotional community in the region and contributed to the establishment and growth of the Hare Krishna Study Centre.
A major highlight of the festival will take place on Saturday, July 11, with the 20th annual Ratha-yatra celebration in the Georgetown and Demerara area. The procession will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Success, East Coast Demerara, and will proceed to Lusignan Tarmac, where a cultural and spiritual stage program will begin at 5:00 p.m.
Ratha-yatra is one of the world’s oldest religious festivals, originating in Jagannatha Puri, Odisha, India. Srila Prabhupada introduced the festival outside India in San Francisco in 1967, and it has since become a major public celebration in ISKCON communities around the world. In Guyana, a decorated chariot carrying Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra Devi will be drawn in procession while devotees and members of the public accompany the chariot with kirtan, dancing, and the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.
The festival will conclude on Sunday, July 12, with the 10th anniversary of the Hare Krishna Study Centre. The temple was inaugurated in July 2016, during the year that also marked ISKCON’s 50th anniversary and Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary. Over the past decade, the temple has developed into a center for deity worship, spiritual education, festivals, youth activities, congregational care, and community service on Guyana’s East Coast.
The Hare Krishna Study Centre continues to serve as a place where devotees and visitors can participate in worship, hear spiritual teachings, learn about Vaishnava culture, engage in devotional service, and experience prasadam distribution. The Legacy Festival is therefore not only a celebration of past achievements, but also an opportunity to strengthen the ongoing mission of sharing Krishna consciousness in Guyana and beyond.
Devotees are expected to attend from Guyana, India, the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Panama, Brazil, Canada, and other countries. Among the expected international guests are Bhakti Vasudeva Swami, Bhakti Sundar Swami, Ajamila Das, Gaura Mani Dasi and family, and Baldev Das.
The organizers hope that the festival will inspire devotees, reconnect families and well-wishers, and encourage the next generation to continue the service begun by Srila Prabhupada and carried forward by devotees in Guyana over the past five decades.
Programs on July 8, 9, 10, and 12 will be held at the Hare Krishna Study Centre, Lot 1, First Street, Cummings Lodge, Georgetown. The July 11 Ratha-yatra procession will begin at Success, East Coast Demerara, and conclude with the evening festival program at Lusignan Tarmac. All programs are free and open to the public.
