Southend-on-Sea Jagannath Ratha-yatra Festival 2026

Date: July 12, 2026
Location: Southend-on-Sea, Essex

Sunday, July 12 was a very special day as the Southend Hare Krishna Community had the opportunity to organize the 3rd Jagannath Ratha-yatra Chariot Festival in Southend-on-Sea.

This annual Chariot Festival is the sacred occasion when the Lord of the Universe, Lord Jagannatha, bestows His mercy upon everyone. More than three weeks of careful planning and dedicated teamwork went into making this festival a joyful and memorable experience for all who attended.

The festival was honored by the presence of Member of Parliament Mr. David Burton-Sampson, HG Dayal Mora Dasa, Temple President of ISKCON London, HG Parasuram Dasa, HG Tribhangananda Dasa, and several other monks from the temple.

The Sacred Procession

The Ratha-yatra procession began at 12:00 pm from Victoria Circus and concluded around 2:00 pm at Royal Square, near the Southend-on-Sea beach.

Before the chariot began its journey, the honored guests performed the traditional ceremonies of breaking coconuts, offering arati (worship) to Lord Jagannatha, and ceremonially sweeping the road before the Lord’s chariot.

As the Lord of the Universe traveled through the streets, devotees joyfully danced and sang the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. The atmosphere was filled with happiness, enthusiasm, and spiritual energy. Many participants shared that it was one of the most uplifting and unforgettable days of their lives—a celebration filled with positivity, exactly what today’s world needs.

A Festival for Everyone

After the chariot arrived at Royal Square, a variety of activities continued from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm. Numerous tents were arranged to provide educational, cultural, and family-friendly experiences for visitors of all ages.

Southend High Street was transformed into a vibrant spiritual festival where people experienced genuine happiness through devotional music, dancing, and delicious sanctified vegetarian food.

Royal Square became the cultural heart of the celebration, featuring:

  • Henna Art
  • Face Painting
  • Gita in 18 Days
  • Snacks Tent
  • Kids’ Corner
  • Bhakti Life with Kirtan Yoga
  • Ancient Wisdom Books
  • Kirtan Yoga & Meditation

The Kirtan Yoga and Meditation tent offered newcomers practical introductions to mantra meditation, Bhakti-yoga, and timeless spiritual wisdom.

Cultural Performances & Prasadam

No Ratha-yatra celebration is complete without a grand vegetarian feast, and this year was no exception. A sumptuous prasadam feast formed an essential part of the festival, delighting all visitors.

HG Parasuram Prabhu captivated the audience with wonderful magic performances and later led an energetic and inspiring kirtan together with his team of devotees. The organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to him for his enthusiastic support throughout the festival.

A Day of Mercy

By the blessings of the Supreme Lord, more than 1,200 people participated in this wonderful Ratha-yatra. The congregation lovingly served approximately 1,200 plates of prasadam (sanctified vegetarian food) to all attendees.

The organizers also expressed sincere appreciation to the Southend Council for their support in making the festival possible, as well as to all the distinguished guests who generously took time from their busy schedules to participate in this auspicious event.

Looking Ahead

We pray to Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Universe, that the Southend-on-Sea Ratha-yatra Festival may continue for many years to come, with each year bringing fresh inspiration, greater participation, and ever-increasing spiritual joy.

Jai Jagannatha!

All glories to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada,
Founder-Acharya of ISKCON.
