Religious Freedom at Risk? Why It Matters for Every Devotee
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Standing in downtown Washington, D.C., near the U.S. Senate conference buildings, ISKCON leader Anuttama Dasa shared an important message following a conference on religious freedom and the growing threats facing it in the United States.
He reminded devotees that, according to the Vedic tradition, the human form of life is meant for one supreme purpose: to inquire about God. The freedom to practice one’s faith and pursue spiritual realization is therefore one of the greatest freedoms any human being can possess.
“Having acquired the human form of life, it is time to inquire about God,” he said. “The ability to practice one’s faith and inquire about God is the most important of all freedoms.”
Anuttama Dasa noted that religious freedom is under pressure in many parts of the world today, including in the United States. While the circumstances may differ from country to country, the need to protect the right of every person to worship according to their conscience remains universal.
Quoting Srila Prabhupada’s broad vision, he emphasized that genuine religion is measured not by labels but by whether it awakens love for God.

He also stressed the importance of cooperating with people of other faith traditions. Defending the religious freedom of others also helps safeguard the freedom to practice Krishna consciousness.
Religious liberty is not only a legal principle—it is a spiritual necessity. Protecting it ensures that people everywhere have the opportunity to hear about God, chant His holy names, and cultivate devotion without fear or restriction.
