Correcting a Bengali Poem’s Refrain

Recently, I took the initiative to encourage the BBT trustees to correct the translation of the refrain in Srila Prabhupada’s Bengali poem written on the Jaladuta as he arrived in America. On September 13, 1965, he wrote: “Today I have disclosed my mind to my companion, Lord Sri Krishna. There is a Bengali poem made by me in this connection.”

Coincidentally – precisely fifty-one years later – on September 13, 2016, the BBT trustees discussed the proposed correction. During a Skype meeting, they decided to get the revision’s accuracy endorsed by three qualified Bengali speakers. By early December, three endorsements were obtained. So the trustees accepted the correction and passed this correspondence resolution (CP16-01):

I thank and commend Tattvavit Prabhu for being bold enough to make this case to the BBT trustees. Correcting the refrain’s translation helps enhance our appreciation of the confidential glimpse this poem gives into Srila Prabhupada’s depth of Srila Prabhupada’s heart and the depth of his surrender. A number of us have been sharing our insights into his “Prayer to the Lotus Feet of Lord Krishna” for years. It’s hard to express how happy I am that his own publishing arm will now make a more accurate translation of the refrain more widely available.
