Thank you so much for joining us today so we are back here celebrating Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita and we’re so grateful for your active participation for the past so many weeks and we’re going to continue with deep absorption in reading and listening to these beautiful lectures and presentations by so many wonderful exalted devotees that are helping us develop the mood for this upcoming Gaura Purnima festival.
So today it’s our great honor and privilege to have Her Grace Vishaka devi with us. Hare Krishna Vishaka Prabhu please accept my hble obeisances, all glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Thank you so much for joining us Vishaka Prabhu, it’s such an honor to have you on this platform and to be able to welcome you and hear your deep realizations and reflections.
I’m not sure how deep but I enjoy the conversations with you.
Thank you so much! Visakha Prabhu is such a well-known devotee because of her contribution to this movement in her so many various different capacities, as a writer as Srila Prabhupada’s photographer, as a co-producer and co-director for this wonderful movie “The Hare Krishna Movement”, her book “5 years 11 months” is one of my favorite books I like to go back to that it’s so beautiful, her sharing, I actually visualize most of whatever you share there makes me feel so close to Srila Prabhupada. Thank you so much for your lifetime of devotion Vishaka Prabhu, it’s such an honor and such a wonderful example for us to follow, so thank you for joining us and our topic for today is the “Hare Krishna Movement – One person’s vision, explosion into a revolution” so it’s amazing that what should a visioned sitting in a small room in Sri Radha Damodara Temple with the intense prayers has now exploded into this Hare Krishna movement help us reflect and take us back into the time when Srila Prabhupada actually walked the planet, thank you.
Thank you so much Govinda Priya Prabhu for inviting me to join you to converse on this wonderful topic. I was reflecting that in a very real sense the Hare Krishna movement began in 1922 which is 99 years ago now next year it will be a hundred years but that of course is the year that Srila Prabhupada first met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta and receive the instruction from him.

Almost immediately upon meeting this great great sadhu please give Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s message to the english-speaking people of the world and this this is the power of sound this is what we’ve we can gather we can glean from Prabhupada’s life that he took this to the to use the words of Krsnadas Goswami he took this instruction to the innermost chambers of his heart and that became the focal point of his life he had been a follower of Gandhi he left that he saw there was no ultimate meeting in that but rather he gave his life to the words of his spiritual master to the service of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and from that point onward although he didn’t get it officially initiated until 11 years later but his spiritual master’s desire became his focal point and that’s such a lesson for us this is the power of sound that if we take it deep into our consciousness it changes our consciousness which in turn changes our lives our habits our goals our priorities how we use our time that’s the revolution and it happened in all the different people that Prabhupada was able to touch the hearts of to create this incredible movement that’s now throughout the world wow what a beautiful beautiful realization and exactly 99 years back that’s far out 19 1922 is when Srila Prabhupada met Bhaktisiddhanta that instruction and took it to the inner chambers of his heart like you mentioned it’s amazing that you know Srila Prabhupada he received this instruction and at the same time he was a householder he had responsibilities but he kept meditating on this instruction and trying different things you know in our own lives sometimes we see that we receive some instruction but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be doable or how how do we reconcile this you know with what Srila but was able to achieve yeah well of course half the story is receiving these transcendental vibrations from the authentic representative of Krishna and the other half is the recipient of those vibrations namely us in this case we can see from Prabhupada’s life how it transformed the trajectory of his life and then when he spoke there would be different degrees to which his followers would be and are being transformed so that depends really on our eagerness to receive that message there’s no material qualification but it’s the sincerity of the individual who’s the recipient of those messages how much they take them into their innermost core of their hearts and allow those words to transform their lives beautiful how fertile the soil is exactly that’s amazing such a beautiful thought and meditation of course from a guru’s instruction comes empowerment but at the same time the soil needs to be fertile we need to be eager wow the both these aspects are beautiful see here we have sitting in radha damadar temple meditating on having this deep desire to assist his guru maharaj in spreading Krishna consciousness of the message of Lord chaitanya all over the world to the english-speaking people in specific i think there’s a bit of a feedback that and he decides at the ripe age to take a plunge and come to a country he knows nothing about and has no one how and in you know if if I think about this now we it just seems far out you know this is you’re just you know you’re just over doing it take it easy this Krishna consciousness we how was it at that point that even when I see the contrast between devotees now we think a lot what’s practical what’s doable what’s but in those days when Srila Prabhupada was on this planet when I hear devotees like yourself and so many others they they were willing to uproot themselves and just do what was necessary to assist Srila bravo how was that possible for you and how did what what was it that is is kind of if I if I is missing if I may put it that way now well I would say that at least in my cat case yes I did uproot myself I went to to india with very little you know we live very simply but I don’t think that’s at all comparable to sheila brown but doing that at age 65 because when I was 21 and that was the life that I wanted i was looking for a a life that was you could say adventurous you know I was okay with backpacking I was okay with living in a tent that was something adventurous for me that i thought was positive rather than having a comfortable situation with a nice comfortable bed so i think that’s not comparable with somebody who’s 65 who’s who’s leaving his country for the first time to go to a completely different country and starting an international movement that was his vision and the fact that he did that I mean it’s miraculous it’s really miraculous prophet said a miracle is something that we don’t understand if we don’t understand it we call it a miracle and perhaps I use the word miracle because his determination his confidence his fearlessness is beyond my comprehension therefore i use the word miracle but it’s such a source of inspiration such a source of inspiration I mean it’s within our you know such recent history it’s not like something in the pages of the bhagavatam that happened five thousand years ago but this is someone who walked and talked amongst us and the fact that he had these qualities i was reflecting on this beautiful song that Srinivas Acarya wrote about the six Goswamis and how Prabhupada had those qualities and he fulfilled for instance the the desire of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu for the six Goswamis Lord Caitanya said to Rupa Sanatana Goswamis you established temples in Vrndavan Prabhupada established temples throughout the world he told them you write books Srila Prabhupada wrote books so that future generations would have the guidance and the knowledge from the scriptures he scrutinizingly studied the revealed scriptures and though that study is conveyed through his words and he was always engaged constantly in hearing and speaking about Krishna from so many different points of view and he was expert in narrating the pastimes of Lord Caitanya so these qualities that are enunciated you can see that there were six Goswamis but Prabhupada in one person there he was with all these skills all these abilities all these qualities that he could be so successful and through all of that for himself he was such a unassing person which makes it more more miraculous and more attractive and more attractive as well well put yeah beautiful well the sixth Goswami is in chile program what a beautiful comparison you have here there’s someone asking a question it’s a bit of a feedback i’m good at youtube for a second so yeah Rajanita Dasi is mentioning that I want to ask why in our movement we see many gurukula but very few girls why we haven’t seen a spiritual education for vaishnavis with there we have some here in the UK and there’s a very successful school also in Alachua and there have both boys and girls they don’t they’re not limited to one gender i’m not sure of other places but certainly the ones that I at least in the west they accommodate both genders perhaps it’s different in india you know the culture of india may influence a guru cool in that way i think it might have a girls okay great they don’t spend the night there but they do spend the day and they go back home yeah so that is there is education for girls as well and it has evolved is there a feedback your voice is muffled sometimes it’s okay so we’ll switch mics if needed so the shocker would tell us you know when you decided to make this beautiful movie that the Hare Krishna movement what was your thought process what were you trying to achieve by that movie it has touched the hearts of not only the devotees but so many people in general you know that were well wishers I mean I’ve known of so many that were really really touched by the movie and it was such a wonderful contribution what was your thought process well we really wanted prophet is such a unique personality in his story i mean his if you hear his story you’ll think it’s fiction you think someone made it up which makes it so alluring because it’s true so we really wanted to convey that in a powerful way to people and as far as possible our our goal was that Srila Prabhupada himself in his own words would tell his story so for that reason we combed the audio of Srila Prabhupada usually what he spoke about was philosophy i mean 90 of the time but those few times there’d be sentences about him meeting his spiritual master about having having a spiritual master come to him in dreams and say now it’s time to take sannyas so these things were gold for us and we compiled them and chronologically so that in the film as far as possible Srila Prabhupada in his own words tells his own story and for me that was so powerful so touching to hear it from him personally [Music] absolutely it was definitely so powerful and touching and definitely achieved that purpose of you know proper telling the story in his own words it was so beautifully woven in this it’s it’s an amazing contribution like I mentioned so many people have been touched by that movie we had a talented team of young people that helped us we’re very indebted to them my husband and i wonderful and that movie is actually available on amazon prime the Hare Krishna movement is that a full title we can post it for our viewers Hare Krishna the mantra the movement and the swami who started it all Hare Krishna the mantra the movement this had started it all we have sakshi gopal Prabhu post a link on Amazon prime it’s available for free share it with your friends such a beautiful movie such a beautiful docentary so Vishaka Prabhu you know while we are talking about Srila Prabhupada at this ripe age coming to the u.s to the west and amongst a group of youth that considered anyone over the age of 30 not trustworthy develop this intense faith and love and appreciation for Srila Prabhupada who is way beyond the age of 30. Prabhupada’s accent was different he looked different how is it that at that point devotees were able to connect with him in such a deep way that they were willing to give their lives and actually uproot what do you think was your prophet’s secret maybe we could show some of those pictures that I sent to you at this point sure because brahma’s audience the young people of course that wasn’t his initial audience at first he started an ups ups up street new york the upper east side but then by different arrangements of Krishna he wound up in the lower east side in the bowery and that was full at the time of young people who were sincerely seeking sincere seekers although they were misguided in terms of free sex and in terms of drug use and so many ways they had no guidance not just misguided practically no guidance but they were sincerely looking for something better than their parents had something better than they had been exposed to in their education and when they met Prabhupada that need was fulfilled in such a powerful way that here they had a person who embodied the teachings that he was expressing and the teachings went right to the core of who they were right to the core of their identity so they could relate to it so thoroughly and to the culture that he was giving them and to him himself they loved him you know without reservation so this created this transformation the transformation that we saw in Srila Prabhupada in 1922 in turn happened to these young people in 1965 66 and going on to this very day so we have some slides just to show how highly unusual it was for the young men and women to wear sarees and dotis and play murdanga and cartiles in the middle of new york city these slides are from the 60s in new york and the devotees were so convinced and so enthusiastic that they ignored the peer pressure they may have felt the idea of being outside the norms of society they simply wanted to please Srila Prabhupada and develop their bhakti-lata beach the seed of devotion that he had implanted so perfectly in the depths of their hearts beautiful yeah we’re having sakshi paprika pull those images up for us and we will share them there’s some beautiful pictures devotees haven’t seen them before there’s something that had been hidden away in the archives perhaps oh this was before this is before I came i came in 1971 so this is prior to to that here we have sakshi bhagava helping us with these pictures let’s see if he’s going to be able to pull them up okay well you know i’ll show them as banners we’re having some technical difficulties as far as the images are concerned but here’s here’s a beautiful picture oh yes this is a randity burunditi devi dasi she was married to pradimya Prabhu who is Prabhupada sanskrit scholar and she also transcribed sheila Prabhupada’s dictations and she was also his cook she sings beautifully when when Prabhupada was in the Krishna balarama temple she arunditi Prabhu and a small group of others kusa sitala Prabhu’s they would sit in front of the deities and sing for the pleasure of the deities Krishna balarama born italian radisham cinder and she sings today she continues that and this is such a beautiful picture and you can get the idea that these people these young people were so sincere in their search so when they found something genuine something authentic they plunged in without reservation absolutely beautiful there’s another picture here yes again you could see this is such a strange situation you know at this time in the 60s to have young american men and women go through the streets of new york saying words in sanskrit and playing musical instrents but this is the devotees were caught up in Krsna’s magic and Prabhupada’s directives and they created this situation where they had a spiritual bubble right these names come from the spiritual world golokera premadana harinama sankirtan and so they took that consciousness with them and tried to give it to others they didn’t care about any social stigma wow and yeah and accepted something that seemed very foreign even though it’s inherent you know Krishna brain is inherent but i one more striking thing I see here is this rationally playing the mudanga oh yes that’s that’s sharadia that’s the devotee that malati and shamsinja adopted oh okay you may have heard that story they were just a few years older than she was but the judge allowed them to officially adopt her because they could take better care of her than her mother had been taking and i from what I remember prophet asked for malte Prabhu and yes wow amazing it just seems so far out that you know anybody would just go ahead and adopt something it’s it’s just i when I think about that era I just feel how dedicated I wish I had just a drop of that dedication you know when marti Prabhu shares that pastime of Srila Prabhupada saying that I could slit my throat for her and she could slit my throat for me that’s that really gives me goosebps because it’s a fact and it’s that’s how connected the hearts were so beautiful yeah the devotees would go out on harinam all day long for hours and hours and hours and so they would return by the subway and continue the harinama on the subway even though they were exhausted you could see they’re quite tired and on his lap is the bullhorn that they used to use for chanting and for introducing the guests to some of the principles of Krishna consciousness some of the philosophy [Laughter] so like I was mentioning in a little talk before the before this interview began one of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples was mentioning that an indian gentleman came and was speaking with child probably what did you do what’s the magic what magic did you do that anshira Prabhu is referring you know to all my white elephants yes and she said what did you learn that these people were convinced about Krishna and about giving up everything giving up intoxication and so many bad habits what did he do Prabhupada said I just sat under this tree and I chanted Hare Krishna and they got attracted to that and it seems like you know that indian gentleman was looking for something very mystical some mantra or something you did or some magic spell you casted upon them but it was the magic of the holy name and Srila brought but sincerity and I think Prabhupada also he was able to convey the importance of the instructions in the life of the disciple that even when the spiritual master is not there these words of instruction are the pride and the life and soul of the disciple because when his spiritual prompted spiritual master left it’s not that he lost any focus it’s not that he lost any enthusiasm it’s not that he wavered in any way but rather those words that here we come again to the power of sound that those words of instruction guided him and gave him this ability to to touch others this is the one focused attention that we learn about in in bhagavad-gita that it’s not many branched that you’re not distracted but this is your goal and what you do in your life your life activities are focused on achieving that goal pleasing your spiritual master fulfilling his directives [Music] yeah I think sakshika pogba was going to share some of the pictures here they are beautiful next yes we this is bali mardan Prabhu and he was as you can see he was a book distributor enthusiastic book distributor he also was a leader and he took the Hare Krishna movement to different parts of the world was quite an amazing preacher in his own right and in his own right he was also fearless he picked up that quality of abide right from Srila Prabhupada to be fearless and would approach people and boldly express his understanding of Krishna consciousness and that was the enthusiasm that he was ignited within him from Srila Prabhupada’s enthusiasm and here again the power of sound that even in pearl puts absence prop had left to go to san francisco and other places but the devotees would continue to read his books to discuss them as we do today and by churning this knowledge and applying it in their lives they were able to maintain their enthusiasm and their confidence even when pramapod was elsewhere when he wasn’t with them personally to do that I hear from the devotees about you know how they used to eagerly wait for the next translation to come up and here we have books ready and we somehow failed to make the time the devotees at that time were so enthusiastic and eager while Srila Prabhupada was still translating yes definitely and you know we would have the opportunity to go to these places of krsna’s pastimes by Prabhupada’s encouragement we would go actually to vrndavan we would go to mayapur and then the scriptures would come alive this is where Lord Caitanya would have kirtan inside you know this is where he met Lord nityananda Prabhu and so forth and it was extraordinary for us to see these places and then relate them to what we had been reading and see the reality of them wow beautiful yeah let’s look at the next picture again this is the same idea that the devotees are continuing this transmission of authentic sound that can transform the lives and keep the lives transformed if we keep the sound pure and our as hearers our own consciousness receptive to that sound and this makes for a potent transaction where the both the hearer and the speaker are benefited and both are enlivened even we were just reading today in the pastime of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu he was speaking the atmaram explanation of the atmaram verse to sanatan Goswami and he he realized more ways to explain that verse and he said because of your companies and not tango swami therefore I have thought of more ways so there’s this dynamic between the speaker and the hearer when the hearer is eager to hear and the speaker is authentic then these things take place that are transformative not just for the two of them but it goes beyond that to the public who may also be receptive where was that picture from the previous picture and i see like it’s like an altar but there’s doesn’t look like there’s any deities there I think juggernaut is on the top yes on the very top there there’s a bright light there so they’re a bit overexposed the juggernaut on the left clapping is belay davey dassey who was a new york devotee so this is it could be yeah see now belay is in los angeles she would know where it is but this next one certainly is in new york it’s the harinam party you can see in the background the famous empire state building and again the point being that most new yorkers the vast majority just thought it was bizarre and perhaps were critical of it and certainly didn’t understand it but the devotees were infused by this potency from sheila prabha that this will make us satisfied in our lives will help us progress spiritually will help us come closer to Krishna and with this conviction they didn’t care what people thought they wanted to express the holy name and they wanted to do that in public because they knew that was so pleasing to Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu here this is on the right side is damodar he’s being interviewed by these people and you know they hardly knew what to ask it was such a bizarre situation but the devotees would present just the basics and people who heard these recordings very often young people would hear this and their parents would think you know this is so strange this is so irrelevant but the young people would say no I want to know more I want to find out where this temple is and what this chant is and they would investigate and very often become devotees as a result of such interviews by the television by radio it just seems like in those days we were making more news than we are today we were on the news for everything for the saffron robes for you know for everything it’s it’s just amazing how how dedicated devotees were you can see the name it’s actually so here they’re in front of the temple you can see right on the right side of the temple there’s a laundromat at 19 18 pounds was the maxim and the devotees I mean along with the enthusiasm that we’ve been talking about so much and the desire the sincere desire for spiritual life they were feeling such relief you know having the guidance the boundaries of the four regulative principles having Prabhupada there with his profound and very relevant instructions creating this understanding of the culture that he was presenting and they felt really joyful even though very often they would hardly have any money at one point brahmananda Prabhu was saying that they they were so poor they had to eat the rind of the watermelon because they didn’t have money but nonetheless despite these austerities they felt such inner pleasure having found this path and having it be so fulfilling for them and made so much sense and Prabhupada there as the the father who was looking after them and guiding them and encouraging them every step of the way was the personification of encouragement the greatest encourager and people to this day will remember just a few words Prabhupada said to them to encourage them in their service you need to unmute i remember someone was mentioning that his holiness bhakti theater maharaj would write to shula Prabhupada you know different things about how the preaching activities was going and Prabhupada was very very happy to receive these letters he would say this gives me energy and this gives me life even when he was unhealthy at times tell us a little bit about how Prabhupada used to appreciate just recently naruto on the vaishnavi ministry show where she was sharing about the bond of love she was she was talking about the clip from in l.a when Srila Prabhupada was giving a talk for the i believe it was the disappearance of his bhakti sadhanti saraswati and brahmath tears up and he starts to cry and out of gratitude mentioning that you know you young boys and girls are helping me serve my guru maharaj so along with empowerment Prabhupada was so unassing so hble always grateful and at the same time he was so expert even at management and he knew how to weave all of this in such a beautiful way tell us a little bit more about prophet’s gratitude that he had for all of you so much yeah well there’s many aspects to gratitude and certainly one of them is just being aware of what people are doing very often we’re oblivious of what people are doing but Prabhupada that’s I would say that was the first thing that I noticed about him when I first saw him was he was more conscious than any person that I had ever met more aware he knew what was going on you know how many people were in the room and perhaps the different mentalities the different moods of those people at the time and could relate to them accordingly and so this awareness really if we can achieve it then we can be grateful for what people are doing i had an example in my own life that I i wrote a very long disjointed article it was my the very first article that i wrote it was called Srila Prabhupada india’s national hero and it was published in a small magazine called the Hare Krishna monthly and so when I saw Srila Prabhupada next he said oh I’ve seen your article you’ve written so nicely and I was stunned because here he is he’s traveling the world he’s opening up centers all over the world writing letters meeting non-devotees and devotees and he reads this disjointed too long poorly expressed article and then says something nice about it and then he said after he said that he said I’ve read your article you have written nicely then there was a tiny pause and he said of course it is not yet perfect but if you go on writing it will become perfect i mean it was terrible to put it in you know common parlance it was a terrible article but you know he saw past that there was some endeavor there and then there was encouragement and so that’s something that you know it was very sincere on his part and it’s something that the follower doesn’t forget it’s so gracious it’s so endearing and so profound too that if you go on writing it will become perfect whatever you do you do it for Krishna and you keep doing it and Krishna will help you [Music] and it has not not still working still a work in progress beautiful that’s such a beautiful point you’ve made the vishakha Prabhu whatever you do do for Krishna and just continue to do it and Krishna will help you it’s amazing sometimes we become so insecure about our shortcomings and limitations and imperfections to doing something and that we refrain from offering ourselves in service but yeah that’s what I feel in those days devotees did you know if they didn’t know how to cook they didn’t know how to wear a sari or they didn’t know how to do dd worship they just continued to do it and Krishna empowered them in so many wonderful ways you know four young devotees just going to start a temple with nothing but these are just things when we think and spot out it’s it’s beyond understanding really amazing can we see the next so is this oh maybe this is the last picture beautiful there’s all these whole glooms of that era such beautiful pictures yeah I think you can get the flavor a little bit of the enthusiasm the youth the spontaneity the determination of the devotees then from the pictures i picked that up anyway absolutely absolutely so the shocker would tell us you know sometimes we as devotees also have desires in terms of how we want to serve and we want to assist guru maharaj in assisting Srila Prabhupada in in the service of the Lord this movement but when Srila Prabhupada with such dedication and fixed devotion he decided to overcome any obstacles that were placed in his path whether it was not getting a ticket coming by cargo ship you know landing up in new york city not knowing where to boston not knowing where to go so many different obstacles came his path but he did not give up he simply continued how would you what advice would you have for devotees of our movement now how can we imbibe that spirit that Srila Prabhupada had to carry forth this mission that he’s really really sacrificed so much for beautiful question i would preface it by saying it’s not in any way that Prabhupada was rigid in his vision i mean we have the example of junci when prabha was in jensen and he wanted to start something there but when there was this obstacle and that obstacle it’s not that he plowed through but he thought this is not the right place the right time so in that way he waited until he did come you know he had free passage as you said so also I think along the way he would sometimes say to the robotees who had big plans you know on the one hand he would say what’s the use of being american unless you do something big so that way he would poke us for being a westerner one could say but on the other hand sometimes he would say you know you’re you’re planning to do this but it’s over endeavor and over endeavor is not good so there is a balance there it’s not that we you know set our sights on something that will eventually perhaps harm us because we can’t achieve it or we can’t achieve it properly or if we do achieve it we sacrifice our sadhana in the process there has to be a balance and that question was asked of sri kirti Prabhu you know how do we know where to where to make these decisions and Prabhupada’s response was that takes a little intelligence which is a very hbling response I must say but it is with a note of caution that yes we want to have determination yes we want to do these projects for pearl puts pleasure at the same time we want to preserve our own spiritual lives not that we’re overcome by stress you know there was a one week before Prabhupada departed that means november 7th 1977. they were discussing the devotees were discussing the plans for mayapur building the tovp with him and they discussed how high it should be and when they said it should be so many feet high 400 whatever feet he said that’s that will be over endeavor over endeavor is not good you know that’s unparaphrasing but he was very realistic we we shouldn’t forget that about problem he was very practical you want to extend yourself but you don’t want to extend yourself so you sacrifice the quality of your rounds so you sacrifice your sadhana in terms of worshiping the deities in terms of reading we want that balance there at the same time of course we don’t want to become complacent that’s that’s maya’s influence totally so it takes I think association is so important to help us find that very important balance between over-endeavoring and not endeavoring enough stretch zone stretch [Music] i zone that stretch though hearts and activities your desire that he had and the instruction that was given to him was in sync with you know in Caitanya said prithvi nagarathi gram it is mentioned that you know this holy name will spread far and wide his desire was in sync with what was Mahaprabhu’s desire and of course the instruction of Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati sometimes I feel that we need to reevaluate our desires also are they in sync with the previous acharyas are they in sync with can you shed some light on that aspect of you know aligning our services in a way that they’re actually in line with yeah that’s such an important question very profound question and again I must come back to the point of association that we may have so many ideas and others may disagree with our ideas think that we’ve lost our focus you know we’ve lost the plot as they say so to come together with devotees or sincerely following you know they’re not benefiting personally materially from the process they’re not taking advantage of others in any way in the process they just want to nurture the again this bhakti latta beach the seed of devotion and so when we can come together with those type of devotees and they may disagree with us that’s that’s fine that’s that’s good actually and then we can struggle with it you know talk about it we have limited resources unfortunately we’d like to have unlimited resources but our resources are limited so what is our priority you know what is doable what will have the most impact on the public to draw them to attract them to Krishna consciousness and these types of questions and then going forward you know enacting some program and then assessing it measuring it how effective were we not in terms of nbers but in terms of the consciousness of the individuals that we’re reaching have they been touched you know have their habits changed has their direction in their lives changed this is real success and it’s harder to measure than pounds and shillings and pence and dollars and cents but this is really what we want this is what prophet did to us this is what he his guru maharaj did to him we want this transformation of consciousness beautiful yes transformation of consciousness and how it just the nbers so you know like you mentioned Prabhupada was so practical how would he have seen all of this bridge preaching we have you know in effort to provide or facilitate or reach out to more and more people we are you know according to time place and circstances changing the method not I wouldn’t even say changing adjusting how would sheila Prabhupada have what did you experience in his way of preaching according to time place and circstance yeah well I mean I wouldn’t be so presptuous to speak for Srila Prabhupada but he did tell us that we see by the results you see by the results so if someone is teaching yoga and they have a sincere desire to give bhakti yoga through physical yoga then they’ll insert that up into yoga classes where devotees very gracefully introduce the idea of the soul the paramatma service of the soul to the supreme soul and how this really brings inner satisfaction the yoga of inner you know and so it can be done and it really rests on the sincere desire and perhaps to some extent the expertise of the person doing it and they can be giving cooking classes they can be doing all sorts of things self-development very successfully in in terms of transforming the consciousness gradually because we have to start with what people can relate to we can’t start with something that they find unattractive or strange that they don’t want anything to do with you know that they’re going to try to avoid so where are the people now this is up to us to figure out and to apply Krishna consciousness to that interest so that can have this transformative effect and if the if the devotee is determined that yes this is where I want to get them to do to the point of chanting Hare Krishna to the point of having a vegetarian diet to the point of offering their whatever they’re eating to the Lord then gradually through their interests the interests of the public you bring them to that wonderful conclusion and then from there of course they can go on to all sorts of things beautiful yes definitely such a profound answer I often times in your association you highlighted the word association so many times in your talk and I can truly feel that just being in your association is so uplifting you carry Srila Prabhupada’s mood and message very kind to see past the coverings you know so any last thought says tell us a little past time mashiro Prabhupada something that you cherish anything that you would like to share with us and the viewers here well I was traveling as pearl putts photographer I was traveling with him in the u.s on the east coast and when he was lecturing in new york at that time we’re at 55th street in new york in the course of his lecture he said you sing this song do you know the meaning he was challenging us do you know the meaning then we traveled on we went to philadelphia and again in the course of his lecture he said the same thing do you know the meaning this this song he introduced as we remember it was in 1972 prior to that we didn’t sing this song every morning but he introduced it specifically so that we could understand the importance especially this line that he quoted at that time is such a significant line that refers to the consciousness our consciousness and ikea means making it one not in the sense of merging but in the sense of unity of purpose unity of desire so we want our consciousness unified with those words emanating from his lotus mouth and why is his mouth lotus because he’s always talking about the lotus-eyed Lord the Lord with lotus feet who’s sitting on the whirl of a lotus flower so this idea that our consciousness through the mercy of the spiritual master is united with a spiritual master’s desires united with a spiritual master’s consciousness so that our our desires are one our purpose are one our intelligence is focused on one goal and this was so profound for me that the tendency is that we sing it every morning so it kind of is just what we do every morning you know we do so many things every morning so we sing this song but it’s such a meaningful song every line is has so much meaning even that first line that it really woke me up to the potency of naratam dastakhor’s words prophet says they’re in very simple bengali but each and every line is profound it goes to the core of our philosophy and has so much importance for us so profound amazing I just love how you tied that up and so eloquently you know it’s beautiful i’m never going to forget that it’s so deep and it has so much meaning aligning your desires like we’ve been talking about this for the past 50 some minutes you know aligning your desires with the instructions of the guru and that’s the secret of success and that’s what Srila Prabhupada achieved aligning his desires with the instructions of his guru and here we are having this conversation 99 years later when Srila Prabhupada has received this instruction from his guru maharaj thank you so much for shaka Prabhu for this wonderful profound you know realizations and your lifetime of devotion and for
