As we were preparing our presentation on the Kaliya-damana-lila we had some questions we did not know answers to, and we thought of putting them to you. Then, walking by the Giriraj, I got a thought of an answer and I thought of presenting it to you.

Kaliya is used as an example of someone who really got the mercy of Krsna. But Krsna sent him out of Vrndavan, so how was that mercy? Two points came to my mind. One is that Krsna sent him back home, Ramanaka-dvipa, where he took birth. By the mercy of mantra he was able to stay in the Yamuna for many yugas. The other point is that Krsna danced on the heads of Kaliya, leaving His footprints there. So Kaliya became a tirtha.

As we hear in SB 1.13.10: bhavad-vidha bhagavatas tirtha-bhutah svayam vibho tirthi-kurvanti tirthani svantah-sthena gadabhrta My lord, devotees like your good self are verily holy places personified. Because you carry the Personality of Godhead within your heart, you turn all places into places of pilgrimage.

Kaliya has become a moving Vrndavan.

We also come for the retreat and then go back home. We want to make our heart like Vrindavan, but Kaliya is poisoning this Vrndavan, killing its residents. If we want to establish Vrndavan we should learn to love devotees.

One devotee was disturbed when we said this during our seminar in Ukraine, and objected, “Isn’t love only for Krsna?” So we tried to research this question.

SP says:

That is the second platform of devotional life. In the second platform, not only to love God, but to make friendship with devotees who is loving God. That is society. Our Society is devotees. We should not only practice to love God, but we should make friendship and love the devotees also. Ref. VedaBase = Sri Isopanisad, Mantra 1 — Los Angeles, April 30, 1970

We should learn to love devotees, our children, our husbands and wives, to do kirtan and hear katha with them. Then we can establish Vrndavan.

I was worried that I am like Kaliya, so Krsna may drive me out of Vrndavan. But Krsna has marked Kaliya. So wherever we go we should carry these marks of the retreat and of Krsna.

—————— Jagattarini Mataji:

This retreat has been very strenuous to me, to keep ahead of the classes and presentations. I came with the desire to share something that was my own meditation. At the evening at the Krsna-kunda I saw the rippling reflection of a three-dimensional tree and how easy it is to disturb the clarity of the reflection. So I wanted to encourage all to move from the bottom of the tree to the real tree.

At the 1st of Vraja-mandala-parikrama we visited most of Vrndavan forests and then, when some were missed out, it was suggested that all of us Western parikramis should cross the Yamuna, holding our dhotis and saris, to Bhandiravan. Then we had to walk back when it was already dark.

There was the sparkling Yamuna water and darkness and we were walking along the field’s ridge, all I could see were the feet in front of me. And if a person in front of me exclaimed in pain, I would know, don’t step there, there is a thorny patch. And it did not matter whether the devotee in front was big or small, the only thing that mattered was to see the feet of the devotee in front and move quickly, because there is someone following your feet. So we should follow the devotees in front of us, “big” or “small”, and lead on the same path.

Thank you for your patience and encouragement. I hope you will come again
(maybe more often) and we will meet here again.

—————- Bhurijan Prabhu:

When Urmila Mataji was speaking about the “big devotees”, Madhavananda Pr. thought, “It must be the Prabhupada disciples”, Jagattarini M. thought, “It must be the men”, I thought, “It must be the sannyasis”, Sacinanandana Swami thought, “Giriraja Swami is the most senior here”, and Giriraja Swami passed it on to the greatest devotee – Giriraj Govardhan.:)

In 1976 I had a great fortune to be in Sri Mayapur. I put up a little tent right between two trees, I listened to Srila Prabhupada’s lectures very carefully and took notes. My consciousness was focused and therefore I could perceive something that I never noticed before or later – that his words are descending from the spiritual world into my heart. And that SP was so powerful that there could be hundreds and hundreds of devotees and each could experience that SP speaks to him individually. Thanks to the Vedabase I can read a segment from those lectures to you now and answer the question: is it posssible to take a mysterious experience, or the Govardhan retreat with us?

<<Just like Bhagavad-gita. Bhagavad-gita and Bhagavan Krsna, they are identical. There is no difference. Don't think, "When I am reading Bhagavad-gita not with purpose, then I am bereft." But to associate, to..., with a desire that "I shall be able to associate with devotee and Krsna," then Bhagavad-gita is nondifferent from Krsna. There is no difference. ... If you are a devotee, bona fide devotee, when you read Bhagavad-gita, you must know Krsna is there. If you are a pure devotee, when you chant Hare Krsna, Krsna is there on your tongue, dancing. Don't think otherwise. Krsna is there. Nama-cintamani-krsnah. Nama. Anyone who is chanting Hare Krsna without any offense... Ten kinds of offenses, you know that. By avoiding offense, if you chant Hare Krsna, then you must know Krsna is there.

Nama-cintamani-krsnah caitanya-rasa-vigrahah purnah suddho nitya-mukto abhinnatvan nama-naminoh [Cc. Madhya 17.133]

[-So this is very much what Sacinandana Maharaj emphasized: Ksna is already there, but we must be there. I have to add my amazement, that despite Maharja's health condition HE WAS THERE, so that others did not even notice his illness-]

Similarly, when we read literature, lila-katha... Lila-katha. Just like we are reading now Srimad-Bhagavatam. This is lila-katha of Krsna and His devotee, Prahlada Maharaja. This is lila, exchange of dealings between devotee and the Lord. The whole Bhagavata, it is called Bhagavata, why? The only subject matter is Bhagavan and bhakta. That's all. Bhagavan is the Lord, and bhakta is devotee. It has no other. You won't find any newspaper item, that "There was earthquake in London," and this and that. You don't find all these things. It is not like that, tad vayasa-tirtham, not for the enjoyment of the crowslike men. It must be swan, hamsa. Hamsa. ... Let us be engaged always chanting the, or reading the pastimes of the Lord, lila-katha. If you read Srimad-Bhagavatam, then it is full of lila-katha, the pastimes of Lord Krsna. So that is the only way to get out of the miserable condition of this material world. ... When you read or hear or chant about the pastimes of the Lord, that is also kirtana. And if you chant Hare Krsna mantra with instrument, that is also kirtana. There is no difference. So we must engage kirtaniyah sada harih. Either we should chant Hare Krsna mantra or we should read our books. This is wanted. Then we'll be safe from maya. Otherwise, at any time, we'll be victimized. Thank you very much. (end) Ref. VedaBase = Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.9.18 -- Mayapur, February 25, 1976

SP is saying this to the devotees in Mayapur - young devotees, how we can always be with Krsna! And he ends with caution.

GRS: Yesterday I read from my initiation, "My dear Giriraj" -- the first time I heard my name.

Before I met devotees I was very proud with my family name, we thought that there are only us 12 Tetons. There is a mountain range called Teton. In a TV show, a person who got $1,000,000 was shown to go to the Teton mountains. Then I found out that Alfred Ford was living in the Teton mountains. So that identification was very strong. So when I read that "Giriraja is the name of the Govardhana Hill" I saw that SP really knew my heart, that I am attached to the "mountain" name.

Our process is not to negate, like the impersonalists are trying to do, but to replace a lower thing with a better thing. So Govardhan Giriraj is better than Teton mountain.

I was Giriraja das brahmacari and we visited some favorite person in Madhya Pradesh. A few times that person mentioned "Giriraj" but SP corrected, "Not Giriraj - Giriraj DAS". I was little rankled, why was I singled out for this obvious correction. Such is the problem of us in this world. But that is our actual identity.

As already mentioned, Govardhan is a servant not only of Krsna but also of the cows, the boys and others. That is our real identity - gopi-bhartuh-dasadasanudasah. The false ego is very entrenched in us, and for me one of the purifying effects of the retreat was becoming aware of this better. We have such elaborate arrangements to control and enjoy, I thought it is almost impossible to make it go away. But I am happy to say that the strength of the false ego is loosening, like Kaliya becoming tired by Krsna's dancing. In the same way the false ego is losening by all the Krsna-katha, the dramas, the Govardhana. I had that experience that at our kirtan at Krsna-kund
-- our heart is like a vessel, if we keep exposing ourselves to the flow of nectar, it will flush out all the poison and dirt. But we have to keep ourselves open. We have to go to the place where Krsna is there in one form or another and keep ourselves exposed and this nectar will dissolve or flush out.

So when we go back - not "home" - where we disembark the airplane isn't our home, this is my home. Before, I thought "Let me see if these retreats fit in my schedule", now I think, "This is my home, I don't know if those other things will fit into my schedule:-)". Well, of course, they will, they are service, but I want to come here, especially to the retreats. So I am very thankful to Bhurijan Prabhu and Sacinandana Maharaj for starting the retreat and to all of you who as the audience are like a golden setting to it.

----------------- Sacinandana Swami:

This has been the 11th Govardhan Retreat and it is like coming to the end of the journey. I feel, "This was something. (Das war was...)"

I would like to give you a small point which I would like to think about deeply. This morning I heard a lecture by SP which was very relevant to my life and thoughts. It was in LA, probably to a general audience, and he starts it in a very interesting way. He says a friend asked why not call the society "International society for GOD consciousness" in America, but SP considered and said that Krsna fits the definition of God the best. Krsna in Vrindavan is the most attractive. So SP said, No, it is a society for Krsna consciousness, and not for God consciousness.

....

So I want to provoke you with a question: How much are you attracted to the personal form of Krsna in Vrndavan? Nowadays if in lecture you say "Krsna has lips red like bimba fruits" people look at you funny and almost think that you must have a sexual disorder to speak of such things. Our movement has somehow fallen asleep to Krsna.

...

If you want to reach Krsna you must engage your mind with Krsna, His name, His land, the Yamuna river.

My dear devotee, you must understand that we must fill the mind with Krsna. It is not in the second place, or third or some other -- it is in the first place. SP hurried to translate SB and saying that he did not know if he will live long enough, he gave devotees the 10th canto in the form of "Krsna" book. He broke the rule of authorship and jumped ahead with the story! This shows how important it is to inject Krsna in our dull minds, even though the preceding nine cantos prepare us very carefully.

I want to stop people on the street, I want to storm into the GBC room, uninvited, jump onto the table and shout, "Prabhujis! Krsna! Krsna! Krsna!" And leave. They are very intelligent devotees, they will understand what I mean.

Our movement is not for establishing the philosophical principles about the philosophical principles of establishing God. It is about Krsna, the cowherd boy in Vrindavan.

The Gosvamis researched all the Vedic literatures, and this "Manah-siksa" is one of the fruits of their research.

My dear devotees, please focus on Krsna, otherwise you will be like that old lady. Once there was an old lady, who cried at every session of Ramayana katha. After a few days, the flattered speaker asked her, "Why do you cry so much? Which point moves you so much?" She replied, "I had a goat, who died 8 days ago, and when I look at you, you have exactly same beard and I cannot help remembering her and crying". My dear devotees, very often we are in the same goat consciousness. This is all about loving Krsna, about getting Krsna back into our hearts. If we don't get it, we join the universal ranks of spiritual failures.

Who can help us? The rivers of Vrindavan. When Krsna plays the flute, the rivers stop, they so much wanted to embrace Krsna's lotus feet, but they could not. They would move closer to the shore, but Krsna would often be further away. They thought, "We are confined, we cannot go all the way to Krsna. Who can help us to get a touch of Krsna? We have to go to the follower of Krsna. The wind always caresses Krsnas body, carries His fragrance". So they prayed to the wind and the wind took the dust of Krsna, imbued with rati, and blew it to the rivers.

When we want to develop Krsna consciousness, we have to know, we are also somewhat stuck in our consciousness, where we can get help. In India it is said that it is easier to move the Himalaya mountains than to change a person's character. When I was in Badrinath I tried, just to be prepared for this talk. My shoulders still pain. It is very difficult to move a mountain but it is more difficult to move you.

And it is more difficult to move me.

...

Yes, we need to go to the "big devotees". We need to serve devotees who are here and Krsna will be satisfied. We need to establish loving communities and Krsna will be very satisfied. But we need to read "Krsna" book, descriptions of Krsna by the gopis in the Bhagavatam, we need to read books like "Manah-siksa" and get our ego bashing there, we need to connect with Krsna.

If this Govardhan Retreat has helped you with this awareness, if it gave you some deep impression, if it gave you some desire, then it is successful. If you understood that there is "still some room for improvement":), it is also somewhat successful.

Now I want to switch off this intensity and request you: My dear devotees, as you return, marked with hearing about Krsna, don't rub that mark off your mind, don't put all those other things back in it, don't put all your anxieties in it. Please return to Govardhan. Please come back the next year, again and again, and inspire others. This is not just a geographical spot, it is a place where love of Krsna is most easily available.

Don't remain an eternal neophyte in KC, remember Krsna and never forget about Him... speak with other devotees about Krsna... ...

Finally, I want to thank you and excuse myself, I may be annoying at times, I must say things to make an impression but in my heart I really know that all of you are better than me. Before leaving, please turn to Giriraj now and communicate your prayer.

Home

Meeting in a Doctor’s Disguise

Drama at the Govardhana Retreat

November 28th, 2011

Invoking auspiciousness before the drama with kirtan and a cow.

Sacinandana Swami describes the history of Govardhana Retreat dramas and explains the significance of dramas that depict Krishna Lila.
Then the director, Bhagavati introduces the drama.

(Available in HD)

Scene 6 of the drama will be posted in 24 hours (provided our internet holds out).

Scene 1

An invocation.
