The word kincit means “for a little while.” The Queen was completely aware that her husband was not dead, although the symptoms of life — action, intelligence and sense perception — had ceased. As stated in Bhagavad-gita (2.13):

dehino ‘smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati

“As the embodied soul continually passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. The self-realized soul is not bewildered by such a change.” When a living entity transfers from one body to another, a process generally known as death, a sane man does not lament, for he knows that the living entity is not dead but is simply transferred from one body to another. The Queen should have been afraid of being alone in the forest with the body of her husband, but since she was a great wife of a great personality, she lamented for a while but immediately understood that she had many duties to perform. Thus instead of wasting her time in lamentation, she immediately prepared a fiery pyre on top of a hill and then placed the body of her husband on it to be burned.

Maharaja Prthu is described here as dayita, for not only was he the king of the earth, but he treated the earth as his protected child. Similarly, he protected his wife also. It was the duty of the king to give protection to everyone, especially to the earth or land which he ruled, as well as the citizens and his family members. Since Prthu Maharaja was a perfect king, he gave protection to everyone, and therefore he is described here as dayita. [End of Srila Prabhupada’s purport to SB 4.23.22]

HH Candramauli Swami: So after a few days of glorifying the Lord in wonderful festivals we are now back to the text on Maharaja Prthu’s going back home. It is described that they were in the forest performing austerities and penances. Now Prthu Maharaja disappears. He simply leaves his body very naturally full in consciousness of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

His wife who was practically as good as him in that she has all the qualities of a chaste and faithful dutiful wife. Here it mentions and of course try to understand that when some dear one, firstly such a personality that was dear to the whole world such as Maharaja Prthu leaves the body. His wife is his only associate in the time of leaving his body. Of course the affection, the attention and the care that they shared throughout life is very deep. And now he is gone but she is in full consciousness of the difference between the body and the soul. It is not that she is insensitive to feelings but at the same time she knows that her husband is not gone. He has gone to another place. He is not dead.

Materialists lament the condition of the body – death calamities, injuries, loss. So many various types of unexpected things come into people’s life. What is the natural reaction? It is to become overwhelmed, to lament, to feel not only unhappy but feeling like sometimes you can’t go on in life. It becomes so strong in the person’s life that they think, “What is the use of living?” Sometimes people even feel that when a material thing is lost what to speak of a dear one – such as one’s money, one’s possessions.

It is like in the 1920’s in the United States of America. At the end of the 1920’s there was a huge crisis economically and practically the whole country went down. And people who had fortunes lost everything practically overnight. And it is reported that many people were jumping out of windows committing suicide simply for something that really – a devotee understands what the value of such things is. One can live without money. Sometimes you can live without money even happier. It depends on the situation.

Here people are losing their lives over something that is so insignificant and cannot really bring any happiness. It is miserable after you have it and it is miserable after you lose it. That is the nature of everything material. People lament. What to speak of the loss of a relative or a friend or a dear one! Here Queen Arci’s husband is not an ordinary person by all means. He is actually a saktyavesa incarnation. He is empowered to rule the earth by the lord himself and he is also the personification of the teachings of the worship of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the form of His deity. He is outstanding on that path and he is dear to the whole world.

She is in pure spiritual consciousness. We might say she expected him to leave. But still when it does happen there is a feeling of loss. But it says it is natural that she lamented for a little while. She didn’t become overwhelmed with lamentation. soka-moha-bhaya [SB 7.13.34] What is this illusion? Illusion causes lamentation. Illusion is the bodily conception of life. The idea that what happens to the body or the mind happens to me. This is the misconception or the greatest misconception of existence. What happens to the body or the mind or anything in relation to that I am affected by! We might feel some loss. That is natural.

To not feel loss at the departure of a loved one is unnatural but to lament and to become affected by that lamentation in such a way that one becomes unable to live. She lamented for a little while but then she went on with her duties because she was free from illusion. What is that illusion? The bodily concept of life! The whole world as Srila Prabhupada constantly emphasises in his teachings over and over again, “You are not this body.” We hear this so many times but it takes spiritual realisation to actually overcome this illusion.

Theoretical concepts simply mean more half satisfied – not fully satisfied incomplete knowledge. One cannot say eat the theories. The theories cannot be digested. You have to have realisation. What is realisation? Realisation comes by hearing and chanting the glories of the Lord. Prabhupada in so many verses over and over again and how many aspects of the sastras on how the living entity laments. Lamentation simply is destroyed when one hears the glory of the Lord, when one hears transcendental knowledge because transcendental knowledge is actually freedom from illusion. Illusion is what makes up this material existence. Constantly people are lamenting for something that is not worthy.

Arjuna was a pure devotee of the Lord. Of course he was put into a particular situation in order to bring out transcendental knowledge but when he was speaking on the bodily conception of life, when he was talking about the attachment for friends and relatives and the consequences of not fighting – what would that bring in terms of social and political consequences. Krishna listened to all is arguments and he waited until he was finished and then He said, “You fool.” He called him an apandita – not a pandita and apandita.

asocyan anvasocas tvam prajna-vadams ca bhasase gatasun agatasums ca nanusocanti panditah [Bg 2.11] [Falters in quoting the last line and is helped by a member of the audience.] Sorry I became a apandita for a minute!

So Krishna really took issue with his philosophy although Prabhupada in the purport says that a devotee has a soft heart. To have a soft heart means to practice Krishna consciousness correctly the heart becomes soft. Here in the Srimad-Bhagavatam if the heart doesn’t become soft then one is not really chanting the holy names of the Lord. So soft heart means one feels compassion, one feels love in relationship to others but one is not affected by the illusions that go on in the form of compassion and love. That is so con-comitant to the nature of the material world.

Arci is in good consciousness. She is all alone in the forest. She is not even fearful. Imagine being in that situation in a forest all alone and your only companion – one that you have loved for your whole life and served through your whole life is gone. It says that she just lamented a little while and then she went on to her duty and took care of the responsibility of taking care of the body.

We hear in other places in Srimad-Bhagavatam the story of King Citraketu and how much he lamented for the loss of his son His lamentation was so great that he was (we might use a very strong word) a fool. He was just lamenting like a little child with no sensibility. He had a son. Of course that is what he wanted. He wanted a son throughout his whole life. He had all the facilities and everything that a king wanted including many wives but he was totally miserable and unhappy because he did not have any heir.

So finally by the mercy of Angira Muni he was granted a son and his jubilation went way up. The higher you go when you lose it the harder it is when you come down. Sometimes devotees say, “I shouldn’t be too attached to too many things because I know I am going to lose it or things are going to change.” But we should be attached to things in relationship to what are religious principles for devotional service.

King Citraketu wasn’t like that. Of course he had a little element that, “I should have a son so I can have a heir to continue on with the throne.” But he was more concerned with his own happiness because he wanted a son. When that son was there the world was Vaikuntha. He was so happy. He was jubilant! And his queen, Krtadyuti who actually delivered the child by the mercy of Angira Muni, she was also feeling completely special amongst all the other queens. They love for the son, their attention was for the son and their love for each other just increased so much at the expense of everything else.

Then the other queens got unhappy and decided, “We are being neglected. This is too much. We can’t take it any longer. The son is the cause of all our misfortune.” So being overcome by envy they killed the child by giving him poison. When the wife Krtadyuti found out through the maid servant what had happened she was overwhelmed. She couldn’t even believe it. Sometimes it happens like that. When you find yourself in a situation where there is something very unexpected and devastating happens, “It is not true!” It is called denial.

The first symptom when we hear something or we experience something we can actually believe it. She didn’t believe it. Finally when she understood that it actually happened what was her first reaction? She started to curse providence. She said, “Providence you are backwards. You create affection between children and mother. That is your plan but then again you break it and you cause unhappiness. So really you are a bad creator. You don’t know what you are doing.” That is how deep lamentation can go, that one even starts to criticise the way the Lord works. Lamentation due to illusion! When illusion and lamentation is there is no intelligence. There is no sensibility. This is how lamentation works.

Prabhupada actually mentions so many times in the purports that simply by hearing the glories of the Lord and by cultivating spiritual knowledge one can be free from this lamentation. brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati samah sarvesu bhutesu mad-bhaktim labhate param [Bg 18.54]

This is the platform of devotional service. This is the platform of being free from all material attachments. As long as there is still material attachments there will be lamentation when it is lost. So one has to destroy material attachments through the process of bhakti yoga and through the cultivation of spiritual knowledge.

Prabhupada used to say, “Don’t be unhappy about what is expected, what is natural.’ And he used the example of death. Everyone is going to die so you should accept that but when it comes it is a whole different thing. That is the nature of the living entities. Attached and when it comes even though we know it we experience what we say unhappiness. But that unhappiness is simply part of the illusion. So a devotee is free from that. A devotee knows that loss or gain is just the same. Krishna gives and Krishna takes away. There is no need to lament nor to rejoice. Krishna says in the Bhagava-gita one who is in transcendental consciousness – no lamentation, no jubilation.

We see in the material world something happens by what is called standards of acceptability and benefit people rejoice and when they lose the same thing they lament. This is the nature of the bodily concept of life. A devotee knows, a devotee is in full consciousness that loss and gain is all under the full orchestration of the Lord. And one should simply be interested only in how to purify one’s consciousness in devotional service. Simply by chanting the holy names of the Lord, the maha mantra it frees one from all illusion. Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. And hearing the glories of the Lord.

satam prasangan mama virya-samvido bhavanti hrt-karna-rasayanah kathah [SB 3.25.25]

This process of hearing the glories of the Lord is actually the process of destroying all illusion and therefore destroying all possibilities of lamentation because on the transcendental platform we are on the platform of hearing the glories of the Lord. How to hear the glories of the Lord. We have to develop that eagerness to hear the glories of the Lord. Hearing of the glories of the Lord is the first principle for purification. As we hear the glories of the Lord what is the next principle? We want to chant the glories of the Lord and by chanting the glories of the Lord because when one becomes full in hearing it is almost like you hear, you hear, you hear for a long time.

Prabhupada mentions to continually hear then one becomes filled and then one wants to speak those glories to others. By speaking or glorifying the Lord then the process becomes complete. One develops smaran or remembrance. Remembrance is the goal – to always remember Krishna.

sa hanis tan mahac chidram sa mohah sa ca vibhramah yan-muhurtam ksanam vapi vasudevam na cintayet [Visnu Purana]

This is a beautiful verse from the Visnu Purana which describes that to forget the Supreme Personality of Godhead for one moment is the greatest loss. That is the greatest illusion and that is the greatest anomaly. It doesn’t say if you lose your money or if you lose this or whatever one might consider a loss – none of these things are included. To forget the lord is the greatest loss. Just one moment of forgetfulness and in that consciousness of forgetfulness we are in maya. That is how material energy works. Prabhupada said and he quotes that verse:

krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare pasate maya tare japatiya dhare

Krishna is there. As soon as we forget Krishna there we are in maya. It is not like there is an in between stage. It is either there is Krishna or there is maya. Maya is simply forgetfulness of Krishna. That is all! The sum total of maya is to forget Krishna. So this verse from the Visnu Purana really supports all religious principles as a foundation for executing devotional service. Never forget Krishna. When one forgets Krishna then that forgetfulness can cause one to be overwhelmed or put into a situation which may cause one to lament even for a second.

Arci, she is there. She has got all the good qualities of her husband. She is as good as her husband in all sense of the word. It is interesting that he tells his wife to be with him at the time of departure – because she was a pure soul too. There was no material relationship in that relationship. Although she was his beloved wife who had been with him for most of his life still they were both pure devotees. Therefore he left in pure consciousness and she continued on in pure consciousness.

Here it is also mentioned that maharaja Prthu was known as dayita. The verse says dayitasya. That means one who is very beloved, one who is very merciful or one who is very dear. So Maharaja Prthu was dear to everyone. He was dear to the earth. He took care of the earth. He chastised the earth.

If we go back into the early parts of this lila we find that when the earth did not supply necessities for the population he became very angry and he chastised earth and wanted to know why she is holding all the necessities of life. She explained it was due to the presence of so many rogues and demons and other forms of people who were exploiting her.

Maharaj Prthu knowing that in the situation, arranged for the earth to produce various types of necessities, commodities, needs for the people in order for the earth again to produce and function in her natural position and to supply the citizens. So he was very dear – not just dear but very dear to everyone. He was known as daitya.

So this verse is very important to understand that when there is apparent loss there is a birth of lamentation but this lamentation as was mentioned here – she felt some loss. Obviously the closeness of her husband, the quality of that relationship – there was some loss. Then she went on with her duty. The soul is eternal. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg 2.20] As the body is apparently destroyed the soul is unaffected.

In fact Srila Prabhupada mentions this point that the body is never alive and the souls is never not alive. They are always existing. Sometimes we say that the body is dead. That is always the case. It is never independent of the life force. If the life force leaves the body then that is called death. When the life force enters the body that is called life or existence but in either case whether the body has the force or not the body always remains. We might use the word death. There is no life to this body. That is foundational in understanding our relationship with Krishna. That is foundational – to know that I am not this body but to know that I am not this body is not enough. One has to know who you are.

If somebody tell you who you are not, that is nice. I am not this body or another body. Which body am I? You are not anybodies body. This is not nice but I will say it. You are nobody but that is not so transcendental. We are somebody. We are Krishna’s part and parcel eternally. So that is our consciousness. That is our existence. To come to the stage of realising Krishna in pure devotional service it is fundamental to understand that we are not this body. Just like whatever happens to the car does happen to the driver although people when they do have an accident or some calamity that has to do with something material they identify and experience the loss in the same way. But that is illusion. Devotee is in knowledge. A devotee is not overwhelmed by that.

In so many places in the Srimad-Bhagavatam you see this element of lamentation – just like when Vidura when his uncle Dhrtarastra left, he also lamented but only for a little while – only for a while. Devotees are not attached to the impermanent, those things that are temporary. They are always attached to the eternal. So we will stop here. Any questions or comments?

Prabhu: Maharaj it says in the text and the purport that Arci lamented for a little while as she was enlightened by the grace of her husband so what is the nature of enlightened grief? Why do we lament even for a little while…? HH Candramauli Swami: A devotee has a soft heart, has emotions. So there is an attachment there but that attachment is not the attachment that one cannot go on. In material life when someone loses something one feels like it happens to them. Actually she expected it. Obliviously because he was going to leave his body anyway! So there’s affection and love and association so when anyone leaves there is some feeling of loss but she didn’t carry on and then couldn’t function. Prabhupada makes the point that she went on with her duty. If one engages in devotional service if there is some loss then if that interrupts your devotional service that is material. It didn’t interrupt her service. She went on with her service but she had affection. We have affection. We don’t develop affection for devotees, we don’t develop affection for the Lord … We feel some loss if the devotee leaves. In the text it is mentioned that one should experience happiness when others are happy and one should also feel unhappy when others are unhappy. That doesn’t mean you can’t function. If you see someone else is unhappy and you are unhappy what do you do? You try to relieve that unhappiness by preaching. So there is some feeling. Devotees are not without emotions. In the very beginning we used to feel like we shouldn’t have any emotions, we shouldn’t have any feelings and so on and we are all so transcendental and whatever happens, happens and it is all Krishna’s arrangement. That is not human. That is not normal either. There is love. There is affection. There is attachment for what is gone. One goes on without material lamentation. I think we all know that. Prabhu: What about if a devotee is feeling something which he knows is not proper – feeling greed, envy or lust? So the emotion is there, the feeling is there. How does the devotee deal with it at that point? HH Candramauli Swami: By knowledge. Knowledge destroys illusion. That is why when one is in knowledge one can see things as they are. Lust is simply due to material desire. When material desires are not fulfilled one’s lust becomes unsatisfied and one feels anger, one becomes illusioned, one again starts to think in a material way, one falls back into material existence. One has to check these things with transcendental knowledge. The force of our transcendental knowledge has to be strong enough to overcome. In some cases when that is not there then we should go to those who have that knowledge and hear from them – get advice, get direction, get understanding. That is another way to fortify or destroy the illusion. Prabhu: You were speaking before about denial of feelings. So lust, greed and so forth you can’t deny that it is there. So does one try to suppress it and run away from it? When you are talking about dealing with it with transcendental knowledge because that is a natural instinct but hearing something which is not proper and trying to deny or suppress it is that proper or is that counterproductive. HH Candramauli Swami: If you are feeling some of these anarthas? Prabhu: You are trying to perhaps deal with it – the experience – not just in your mind. You are experiencing it and perhaps trying to run away from them? HH Candramauli Swami: You know we have to think that it is external to my existence. Simply due to my material conceptions, my material attachments, lack of clear transcendental knowledge. We have to apply transcendental knowledge. There is no other way. But if it goes on for a long time then that is a problem. Just like just recently there was a very horrible car accident in America. Three devotees died. I knew one of them really good. So in my mind it keeps coming back to me – the thought why but then I realise obviously there was some reason why it happened. We may not know the reason but we have to accept it because we know the verse – Mayadhaksena prakrti suyatte sacara caram. Krishna is completely in control of everything. Everything happens for some reason either materially or spiritually it purifies or teaches some lesson or to bring somebody back to Godhead or something. All these things ultimately are orchestrated by the Lord through his energies. Either He allows it to happen or He wants it to happen.

So transcendental knowledge is really the answer to all our so called lamentation or illusion, anger or envy. Just like if you feel envious toward someone. I give you an example of how to destroy envy. If you feel envious towards someone that means you do not like what Krishna is doing for that person therefore you are fighting with Krishna. Krishna is arranging everything for everyone and if you don’t like something that Krishna has arranged for that person that means that you have a problem with Krishna. So when you think about it in that way you think, “Wow I am not really supposed to have a problem with Krishna because He knows better than I know.” So we can begin to destroy this illusion with transcendental knowledge.

Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita that you destroy illusion with transcendental knowledge – the very last verse in the fourth chapter of Bhagavad-gita. I am not sure of the exact Sanskrit – with the sword of knowledge cut through this illusion. He is talking to Arjuna. He calls knowledge a sword. It cuts away illusion. So we have to … transcendental knowledge until we come to the understanding that there is a reason why everything happens. Mataji? Mataji: Maharaja I have a very small comment to make on the concept of why the human beings are lamenting. We can remember that not only the human beings but Krishna Himself sometimes laments and Ramacandra laments when Sita is taken away. So this is the charm of the Supreme Personality of Godhead that he has all the emotions that we have. If you study the literatures of Jiva Goswami you can see so many instances that Krishna is lamenting. He is very charming. So this is the whole point. If we don’t have these emotions then there is something missing in their makeup. It becomes impersonal. HH Candramauli Swami: But Krishna’s lamentation is not material. Mataji: Of course not. That goes without saying. But at the same time these emotions are there. HH Candramauli Swami: Yes but our emotions should not be emotional either. Mataji: Actually they are not material. HH Candramauli Swami: No if there is a relationship to a devotee then they are not material but what makes it material and what makes them spiritual is that if you go down in your devotional service – if it affects your service. Prabhupada says that. Just like anxiety. He said a devotee is in a lot of anxiety. He said to have anxiety is a really high stage of spiritual practice – those who are in anxiety because others need Krishna consciousness. So I should be in anxiety to try to give them. Or the anxiety that Krishna is hungry and I have to make nice offering for Krishna because if not then He will be unhappy. So that is transcendental anxiety and it increases one’s devotional service – not decreases it. That is the point. Whatever decreases our devotional service – makes it go down, that is material. Thank you. Prabhu: Prabhupada told that when we have lost especially spiritual father or spiritual master – they die or left the body then we must cry. HH Candramauli Swami: That crying is purifying but not for a long time. If you cry all the time it is like Prabhupada mentions there are literally huge oceans of tears due to the lamentation of the condition souls. The oceans on this planet are small compared to the ocean of lamentation committed by people when they go through these situations. But we only want to add a few drops to the ocean and not increase the ocean any more… Devotee has feelings. If you don’t have feelings we are not actually practicing Krishna consciousness… We are supposed to love Krishna. We want to love Krishna and we also love Krishna’s devotees. But for ourselves if there is some loss we understand that there is some reason why therefore:

tat te ‘nukampam su-samiksamano bhunjana evatma-krtam vipakam hrd-vag-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te jiveta yo mukti-pade sa daya-bhak [SB 10.14.8]

When something happens to me that is a reverse, “Thank you Krishna” Prabhupada said that the Hare Krishna maha mantra and this verse should be learnt side by side. It is such a fundamental verse for practicing Krishna consciousness. To understand that everything has been reversed and there is a reason why. The reason is God. Somebody asked Prabhupada, “Does every cloud have a silver lining?” The idea of a cloud being something that is inauspicious and negative. And Prabhupada said, “No.” He said, “For the materialists a cloud is a cloud – one cloud after another. But for a devotee that cloud leads him to act in such a way that one starts to experience the reason why.” One gets some knowledge from this. One gets some purification from this. One gets some devotion from these things if it is seen in that way.

Otherwise if everything when according to how we planned it then we would be the supreme but we are not the supreme. Materialists go on in life thinking someday my plans will be fulfilled but that someday never comes. A devotee always thinks what the plan of the Lord is and tries to execute that. That if I have to go through some difficulty then that is also my – as Bhaktivinode Thakur says difficulties that one encounters in devotional service – he says that is my happiness because it is an opportunity to make advancement, to show devotion.

Anyway I am speaking theoretically. So thank you very much. Srimad-Bhagavatam Ki! Jai! Srila Prabhupada Ki! Jai! Gaura-premanande Hari-haribol.
