Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare? Hare Rama, Hare Rama? Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Kirtana means glorification of Lord Krishna. All activities in the Hare Krishna movement are meant for Krishna-kirtana-glorification of Lord Krishna. Although this glorification takes many forms, kirtana is particularly understood to mean chanting Krishna’s holy names. This is also called sankirtana. The prefix “san” means “complete” or “in association.” So Sankirtana means “complete glorification” or “congregational chanting.” Some say that Hare Krishna Kirtan is the integral part of the Hare Krishna Movement – WRONG !!!!

The Hare Krishna Kirtan is the Hare Krishna Movement.

Kirtana is our first duty. (Srila Prabhupada Letter to: Palika, 13 November, 1975)

hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare? hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare? iti sodasakam namnam kali-kalmasa-nasanam? natah parataropayah sarva-vedesu drsyate

The sixteen names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra: hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare, hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare destroy all the inauspiciousness of the kaliyuga. This is the conclusion of all the Vedas. (Kali-santarana Upanisad from Krishna Yajur Veda)

Kirtana is central to Gaudiya Vaisnava culture. Many of Lord Caitanya’s associates, such as Svarupa Damodara, Sanjaya, Mukunda and Vasudeva Ghosa, and Paramananda Kirtaniya, were reputed singers and musicians. The Gaudiya Vaisnavas have composed thousands of songs in praise of the name, fame, form, qualities, pastimes and associates of Lord Krsna and Lord Caitanya. Acaryas such as Narottama Dasa Thakura and others developed the science of kirtana to perfectly express rasa through music, and thus transport the participants and hearers to the ecstasy of Krsna consciousness.

Vrindavan Das describes the Lord’s instructions to Tapana Misra in the Caitanya Bhagavata
(1.14.143-147) as follows:

“Everything is accomplished by Hari-nama sankirtana, including the goal of life (sadhya) and the means for its attainment (sadhana). In this age of Kali, the only means for deliverance is the chanting of the names of Hari. There is no other way, there is no other way, there is no other way. ‘Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.’ This verse of names is called the maha-mantra. It contains sixteen names of the Lord, consisting of thirty-two syllables. Chanting this mantra again and again will awaken the sprout of prema within the heart, and thus the goal of life and the means for its attainment is understood.”

Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya states in his Caitanya Satakam (64)

“Seeing the people of the world afraid of the sins of the age of Kali and dejected at heart, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu personally gave them the hari-nama mantra and also ordered them to do loud sankirtana of this mahamantra while dancing and playing musical instruments.”

The following famous instructions of Sri Caitanya are related in the Caitanya Bhagavata
(2.23.75-78):

“The Lord ordered everyone in great joy: ‘Listen to the Krishna-nama mahamantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.’ The Lord said: ‘I have spoken the mahamantra. Perform japa of this mantra a prescribed number of times. All perfection will be attained through this. Chant this mantra every moment – there is no other rule.'”

The following statement on the congregational chanting of the Hari-nama mahamantra found in the Padma Purana:

“Anyone who dances in front of Sri Hari and loudly chants the Hari Nama maha-mantra will destroy all witches of sin. Just as the water of sacred rivers like the Ganga purify the universe, similarly those who circumambulate Sri Hari and loudly perform Nama Sankirtana of the 16-word maha-mantra with sweet voices and while clapping the hands, purify the entire universe.”

Ananta-samhita, one among the voluminous pancaratra-agamas, states: “‘Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Rama Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare’ — This sixteen-name, thirty-two syllable mantra is the maha-mantra in the age of Kali by which all living beings can be delivered. One should never abandon chanting this maha-mantra and take to other so-called purificatory processes which are practiced by rascals, or engage in chanting other metrical compositions of the name of Krishna that are against the pure conclusions of the scriptures, or are filled with rasabhasa. About this divinely spiritual maha-mantra, which delivers one from material existence, the original guru, Lord Brahma, has said, kali-santararadi srutite, ‘The srutis have declared this mantra to be the best means of deliverance in the age of Kali’. Having all heard this from Brahma, the sons and disciples of Brahma, beginning with Narada, all accepted the Hare Krishna maha- mantra and, having meditated on it, attained perfection.”

The dearmost spiritual master of Srila Prabhupada His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Sarswati Thakur explained –

" To make us wholly devoted to Krsna’s name, Sri Gaurangadeva, the combined form of Sri Radha-Govinda, came to this world. But if we disregard His teachings and show no interest

in Sri-Nama-seva, we will never attain auspiciousness. Sri-Nama-Sankirtana is the best sadhana. If other sadhanas help us in krsna-sankirtana, then they deserve to be called sadhana; otherwise they are simply impediments to sadhana.?? Sri-krsna-nama-sankirtana is the emperor of sadhanas. It is the only infallible sadhana capable of bringing us to siddhi. Sriman Mahaprabhu did not speak of teaching archana, but in Sikshastakam he taught nama-bhajana. Although in Kali-yuga other limbs of bhakti should be performed, they should be accompanied by bhakti denoted by kirtana."

We can keep on quoting sastras endlessly – Why Hare Krishna Kirtan is so important in our devotional lives ?? But we need to do something practical. As Srila Prabhupada once told his disciple in Vrindavan – “Do something practical.”

Srila Prabhupada himself exemplified doing what is practical. He sat in Tompkins Square Park, New York alone and started chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra resulting in the modern day – The Hare Krishna Revolution. Soon thereafter Hare Krishna was a household name not only in America but in the whole world. Later, the sincere followers of Srila Prabhupada took the Hari Nama Sankirtana to every nook and corner of the world. The inspiration

It was summer 1973. It was 8am, and already Washington, DC was bustling with activity, as everyone hurried to work. A group of ISKCON devotees left their temple, crossed Q Street and headed towards Connecticut Avenue, a heavily populated business district. But their job is different: as they walked, they sang the Hare Krishna kirtan. Suddenly, a young fellow appeared out of nowhere, a flute tucked under his arm and long red hair streaming out behind him as he ran as fast as he could, trying to catch up with them. The devotees were surprised and delighted. Then, just as he’s almost reached them, the young man lost one of his flip-flops (A backless sandal held to the foot by a thong between the big toe and the second toe). The devotees indicated to him that he should go back and get it, they’ll wait for him. But he refused. There’s no way he would risk losing them or miss out on even a few seconds of kirtan. He joins the kirtan party, and that very day, he moves into the temple. The young fellow’s name was Eddie-better known to ISKCON devotees all over the world as Aindra Dasa-and from that day on, he never stopped chanting Hare Krishna.

Inaugurating the 24-Hour Kirtan

Later, Aindra became a priest for Radha-Madhan Mohan and Gaura Nitai, and would play around with the harmonium in between services, soon working out his first melody: Bhaktivinode Thakura’s short song Jaya Radha Madhava. He continued to practice, and his skill and love for kirtan grew. Moving to New York City, he converted a truck that would open out into an ornate golden temple. He acquired sound permits and would drive to different parts of the city where he would set up his truck and perform kirtan for eight hours a day. His performances were impactful, inspiring several people to join ISKCON.

Eventually Aindra decided he would like to try organizing a kirtan program in India. Travelling to Lord Krishna’s birthplace of Vrindavana in 1986, he learned the story of the Krishna Balarama Mandir’s 24-Hour Kirtan program. It had first been introduced in 1975 by ISKCON founder Srila Prabhupada-but without proper management, it began to fade, and by 1978, a year after Prabhupada passed on, it had ground to a halt. Aindra decided to dedicate himself to the project. He began to soak up the atmosphere of Vrindavana, connect with other kirtaniyas, and learn Indian classical music or ragas, teaching himself the traditional melodies by ear. And eight years after the 24-Hour Kirtan had faded away, he reconstituted it as its own department, organizing a core group of kirtan enthusiasts to ensure its continuance. Krishna Balarama Mandir’s 24-Hour Kirtan has been running non-stop, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, ever since.

It was the sheer dedication and determination of HG Aindra Prabhu that led to the fulfillment of Srila Prabhupada’s desire. Now carrying the baton passed on from him his followers are trying their best to fulfill his (Aindra Prabhu’s) desire to take the Nama Sankirtan Festivals to various parts of the world.

In line with that endeavor we are extremely happy to announce the Holy Name Festival in Pune to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ISKCON NVCC (Sri Sri Radha Vrindavanchandra, Sri Sri Jagannath Baladeva Subhadra, Sri Sri Gaur Nitai, Sri Balaji and Srila Prabhupada). So we on behalf of our beloved Aindra Prabhu, GBC’s (HH Gopal Krsna Goswami Maharaj, HH Radhanath Swami Maharaj & HH Lokanath Swami Maharaj), Temple President (HG Radheshyam Prabhu), Temple Management Committee and all the kirtanaiyas of the world we humbly request everyone to participate in the congregational chanting of the Holy Names whole heartedly and give your blessings to this auspicious event.

Please come and join us on 2 nd Feb to 5 th Feb 2023 in the ‘Punya Nagri’, Pune and lets do the ‘best of all the Punyas’ together, the very essence of all the scriptural knowledge – Harinaam Sankirtan !!!

And remember – The proof of pudding is in eating.

Do the Right Thing, Perform Nama Sankirtan.

Param Vijayate Sri Krishna Sankirtanam !!!

Your servants @ 24-hour kirtan party ISKCON NVCC Pune India

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna?
