The event drew over 700 devotees on Saturday and more than 900 on Sunday.

The celebration marked four decades since ISKCON Houston moved to its current location on West 34th Street in 1984. The temple, originally established in 1972 in a Montrose-area home, has grown steadily over the years to become a vibrant spiritual and cultural center for the Houston community.

Saturday’s program featured the Boat Festival of Sri Sri Radha Giridhari. Devotees gathered to witness the Deities placed on a beautifully decorated boat, symbolizing Their divine pastimes on the Yamuna River. The atmosphere was filled with devotional singing and dancing as the boat glided across the waters, captivating the hearts of the devotees.

On Sunday, the temple hosted Jhulan Yatra and Chandan Yatra. During Jhulan Yatra, Sri Sri Radha Giridhari were gently swayed on an ornate swing, recalling the joyful swing pastimes of Lord Krishna and Srimati Radharani. In the Chandan Yatra ceremony, the Deities were adorned with fragrant sandalwood paste, offering a cooling and aromatic tribute during the summer season.

A highlight of the weekend was the presence of kirtan singer Govinda Das, who led soul-stirring Vrindavan-style kirtans that energized and inspired the congregation. His kirtans drew large crowds and created a deeply spiritual atmosphere throughout the temple grounds.

The temple’s history reflects the growth of the ISKCON movement in Houston. After relocating to Rosalie Street in 1974, the Deities Sri Sri Nitai Chandra and Sri Sri Chaitanya Chandra were installed. In 1986, the current temple was renovated from an old church, and Sri Sri Radha Nila Madhava were installed. Sri Sri Giriraj Govardhan followed in 1989, and Sri Sri Radha Giridhari were added in 1992. In 1996, Gauranga Hall was constructed to serve as a cultural and community gathering space. A major milestone came in 2014 with the inauguration of a new temple complex, which drew over 10,000 devotees. This project was inspired by Srila Tamal Krishna Goswami and marked a new chapter in the temple’s service to the community.

The 40th anniversary celebration was not only a tribute to the temple’s past but also a reaffirmation of its mission to serve the spiritual needs of the community. Devotees of all ages participated in the festivities, reflecting the inclusive and intergenerational nature of the congregation.

Temple leaders expressed gratitude for the continued support of the community and emphasized the importance of preserving and expanding the temple’s legacy. The weekend’s events served as a reminder of the temple’s role as a spiritual home for thousands of devotees and well-wishers in the Houston area.

As the temple looks ahead to the future, the 40th anniversary celebration stands as a testament to the enduring power of devotion, community, and service. ISKCON of Houston will be celebrating Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava’s 40th installation anniversary next year.

Temple is located at: 1320 West 34th Street, Houston TX 77018.
Visit: ISKCONHouston.org for more details.
Contact: Communications@ISKCONHouston.org

More photos: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1kdvoqcvHe54_qNPVWM78n_a_AVM6wuMy

ISKCON of Houston – 40-year Anniversary The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) of Houston celebrated the 40th anniversary of its Garden Oaks location with a two-day festival on July 12 and 13, 2025.
