Thus it is the head-quarters and spiritual home of the Hare Krishna movement, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness ( ISKCON ).

ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, visualized, over thirty years ago, life-size metal deities of the Pancha-tattva for installing in the large main temple at Mayapur, the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, in the center of a grand spiritual city that he wanted his followers to build.

In accordance with the desire of Srila Prabhupada, the Sri Mayapur Development Committee decided a number of years ago that ISKCON should install the Pancha-tattva Deities, just as had been previously installed, Radha Madhava and the eight gopis, even before the Vedic Planetarium Temple was completed. Therefore, an extension temple was made for accommodating the Pancha-tattva.

Models of the Pancha-tattva were made after researching the scriptures on the exact dimensions, proportions and qualities of each member, who were made in accordance to the descriptions found. It was decided that each deity should have an individual pose. Thus each is holding His hands differently. Lord Chaitanya with His hands wide open worships Lord Krishna to teach all the conditioned souls how to take shelter of Him. Nityananda and Gadadhara are dancing, and at the same time encouraging the conditioned souls to take shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Advaitacharya is dancing in ecstasy for Lord Chaitanya, who appeared because of his ardent calls. Srivasa, in his humble mood as a pure devotee, is worshipping the Lord with his folded hands. Everyone is dancing in ecstasy in the sankirtana movement. The models were then approved by the various senior devotees and the members of the Sri Mayapur Development Committee.

Starting in 1997, research was done to find out who would be best qualified to cast the deities, as they were to be of over seven feet in height, and required experienced craftsmen. After searching throughout India, artisans (sthapatis), from Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, South India were found to be the most suitable. These capable craftsmen were convinced that Lord Chaitanya was a form of the Supreme Lord after hearing quotations from the Srimad-Bhagavatam and other authorized scriptures, and took up the work with devotion. In due course of time, the fiberglass models were made by Bharat Maharaja Dasa and after GBC inspection and approval, the order for making Pancha-tattva was fixed by Mayapur Head Pujari Jananivasa Prabhu on July 19, 2002.
The models were sent to South India and the work commenced under Bharat Maharaja Dasa’s supervision.

Bharat Maharaja and the Sthapati.

Mayapur Head Pujari Jananivasa offering prayers and doing puja
before the commencement of the melting.

The process of making metal deities is very ancient and is still done today by hand according to the ancient Shilpa Shastra. First, from the fiberglass model one reverse model is made in plaster of Paris in two halves. Each half is filled with wax and then joined together. Thus a complete deity model in wax is produced, which is very easy to carve or modify. After the wax models were worked to as much perfection as possible, they were enclosed in mud cocoons reinforced by steel rods and set to dry for two months. The wax was then drained out from allocated holes. The cocoons were then baked to become as hard as brick. By this process, inside the cocoons were imprints of the deities made of wax, which were then ready for casting. The first casting, that of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, commenced on April 15, 2003. The deities are made of eight metals called ashta dhatu: copper, brass, tin, lead, iron, gold, silver, and steel. However, Lord Chaitanya is described as reddish golden color; Gadadhara has a similar complexion as Lord Chaitanya; and Advaita Acharya is said to be light in color. In this way each deity needed a unique mixture of metals, according to the complexion of each personality. The metals in proper proportions were put into fifty special containers, which are fire resistant up to 2000 degrees, and melted down. This process is usually done in the night, since the daytime temperature in South India is sometimes 45 degrees. Dealing with five pits with blowers and coals was not an easy task. Each pit held ten containers.

Special laborers had to continuously bring portions of the 3000 kilograms of molten metal and pour them into the cocoons, which were buried underground. After all the metals were poured, the deities were left to cool for seven days. The cocoons were broken open and the unfinished deities emerged into the light. After this the final carving and polishing work began.
The Sthapatis explained that making a deity is like having a baby. It is true, for only with much anxiety and love these deities have become manifest. The amazing beauty of these Deities became more and more manifest as the work progressed to the finish. It appeared as if the Deities apparently sculptured themselves.

The finished deities of the Pancha-tattva, each weighing about 3 tons, left Kumbakonam in South India on January 31, 2004. The huge truck carrying the deities left the compound of the Stapathis at 6 PM, the calculated auspicious time. It first carried the Deities to the Sri Swaminathar Swami temple, the main temple in town, where it circumambulated the temple then went on to the main highway leading to Chennai. It was a rough road and required experienced and professional drivers. The ISKCON Mayapur sankirtan van containing 8 devotees and broadcasting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra over loudspeakers, followed in tow. The next morning they reached the outskirts of Chennai, and met by devotees from the local ISKCON temple who gave a quick but nice reception, with prasadam.

The next day, Feb 1st, they reached the first interstate crossing, the Tamil Nadu border. Generally, it is extremely time consuming going through all the bureaucratic paperwork and monetary demands at such a border crossings, especially considering the size and value of the cargo. The devotees technique was to directly go to the top man and unload some prasadam. The effect was immediate…they would allow the Pancha-tattva to go through in record time… and all the government officers at the check posts were very pleased to render this service to the Lord.
Andhra Pradesh was the longest stretch crossed. Many ISKCON devotees from Vijaywada, Rajamundry, Nellur and Vishakapatnam came to receive Pancha-tattva and brought sumptuous prasadam which kept the party going and saved time since the drivers did not have to stop to cook for themselves – and who had started to prefer prasadam anyway. By February 3rd, they had crossed into Orissa without incident, the remembrance of Lord Jagannath there giving them spiritual strength. The party halted in Orissa for the late night hours, as there were tales of dacoits and robbery during the dead of night.
On the night of the 4th, they approached the Bengal border and rested waiting for the morning. When the time came to cross this final border, the devotees could understand why the drivers were so afraid of it. There was a pandemonium with trucks trying to get through in both directions, each pouring over into the opposite lanes and causing an unmovable jam. The devotees had never seen so many trucks in one place at one time, and after being stuck in this situation for over an hour they themselves physically stopped the entangling flow of traffic and moved the main obstacle-causing trucks to the side of the road, all the while quickly explaining that these were Deities, “Thakur“, who could not wait as they had to be installed in the Mayapur Temple at the auspicious time! Thus, after just barely managing to squeeze through; they entered Bengal on the 5th – with the blaring of the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra from the loud speakers stimulating everyone on the road to chant along! The Karagpur-Calcutta road was under construction and the traffic, even at midnight, was unbelievable. By 1 am, 6th February, they were in the Calcutta by-pass road, which leads to highway 34, the main road to Mayapur. At Mayapur, devotees came to decorate the vehicles and formed a procession to bring the Pancha-tattva home. I noticed, devotees were greatly enjoying the kirtana with such exuberance that some devotees actually cried in happiness just to see the procession! Jananivasa Prabhu said that he had not seen the devotees so enthusiastic in devotional service since the time of Srila Prabhupada’s manifest presence!

Clearly, this year the festival wasn’t going to be like other Gaura-purnima festivals, nor was the installation of Sri Sri Panca-tattva going to be like any other Deity installation ceremony.
On the 21st at the temple, through the loud speakers I could hear the raging kirtana being led by HH BB Govinda Maharaja and HH Niranjana Maharaja. There was a small platform for the kirtana performers, while the entire Pancha-tattva Hall was packed with devotees. The kirtana was powerful. I suddenly realized that I was also singing and dancing! I then noticed that everybody that I saw was singing the maha-mantra! What was going on here? How did this sudden taste for Krsna’s holy names come to us?
Behind the Pancha-tattva Hall was an extension, the construction of which was still being finished. There are stairways leading to a balcony and you can have a nice view of whatever is happening at the Panca-tattva Hall. So, I thought, let me go there and see just how many are joyously singing Krishna’s holy names in the kirtana. I noticed that at the balcony too, to my amazement, the devotees were also singing!

I saw that devotees were just overwhelmed by an overpowering spiritual potency to sing Hare Krishna continuously in a happy mood! Honestly, as far as my memory goes, this is the first time in the last 15 years or so that I had ever noticed such a phenomenon. From the balcony I saw that the devotees in the hall sometimes stood up to dance in kirtana. I then came downstairs, wonder struck at what was happening.
Just before I re-entered the Pancha-tattva Hall, I met a devotee friend. I asked him, ‘What’s happening here? How come everyone is actually happy and overwhelmed in kirtana?’ His realization was, ‘This Pancha-tattva Deity installation is causing the movement to enter a new phase. Govinda Maharaja and Niranjana
Maharaja were singing Hare Krishna in two tunes, again and again. I saw some GBC members also singing Hare Krishna in great happiness. I also saw some gurukuli devotees, some small children too, sitting along with the Maharajas participating in the kirtana. One boy was blowing a horn every now and then. Many devotees had climbed up the platform to show Sri Pancha-tattva Their favorite items with which the Krishna consciousness movement worships Them:- mrdangas, karatalas, Srimad-Bhagavatams and other books of Srila Prabhupada, etc.
What joy! How sincerely the devotees were prayerfully singing Hare Krishna! How can I express the great happiness the assembled devotees were feeling then? I remembered that in Teachings of Lord Caitanya, Srila Prabhupada describes how Lord Caitanya had led kirtana at Varanasi with thousands of people and they were in great happiness. I could get a glimpse of what that must have been. Actually, I am simply unable to explain it, though by the blessings of Their Lordships and Their devotees, I was able to have a minute experience of kirtana-rasa and darshana-rasa, as were hundreds of devotees there.
The Deities are gorgeously beautiful. They were dressed in simple white dhotis and chadars. One by one, different senior devotees performed each aspect of the netra-unmilinam (eye-opening) ceremony, showing auspicious items that are placed in front of the altar so they are the first things the Deities see such as rice, gold, silver, Ganga-jal, and so on. The devotees’ happiness in the kirtana hall continued unabated. The devotees present started to dance. I saw several devotees crying in happiness. I then went to join the devotees in the kirtanas, the dancing, and the great happiness of kirtana-rasa. The kirtanas and dancing went on and on and on.
This movement is going to expand wildly after this. The Supreme ‘In-charge’ has come to take over the world. Now this roar, as far as I’m concerned, was totally disproportionate even to the number of people in that room. It was my conviction that we weren’t alone in that room. I was feeling the presence of the disciplic succession, especially Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, and Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur. When the Panca-tattva appeared, the din of the kirtan was already deafening but when those curtains opened, the sound vibration appeared to lift up to the point where I felt we were all going to ascend right through the coverings of the universe back to Godhead. That was the power of that vibration. The roar when the curtains opened was absolutely out of this world. I felt as though we were all ascending with the transcendental thunder: ‘GAURANGA!‘ You felt pulled up to where it was wild.
