On the occasion of the acceptance of the renounced order of life by Badrinarayan Swami\u2014some relishable instructions from Srila Prabhupada.<\/em><\/p>\n

In a conversation in Hyderabad, India, recorded on April 12, 1975, Srila Prabhupada spoke about the true spirit of sannyasa<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

He began, \u201cYou should submit, and you should feel, \u2018I am worthless. My guru maharaja<\/i> has given this chance to serve Krsna, to offer to Krsna: \u201cMy Lord, I am worthless. I have no capacity to serve You. But on the order of my guru maharaja, I am trying to serve You. Please do not take any offense. Accept whatever I can do. That\u2019s all. That is my request.\u201d \u2019<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThat mantra is sufficient,\u201d Prabhupada continued. \u201cKrsna says in the Bhagavad-gita<\/i>, yo me bhaktya prayacchati<\/i>. Krsna never said, \u2018One who offers Me with Sanskrit mantras.\u2019 Yo me bhaktya prayacchati<\/i>\u2014the real thing is bhakti<\/i>, feeling, \u2018How to serve Krsna? How to please Him?\u2019 That is wanted. Not to see that you are a very good scholar in speaking in Sanskrit or English. Always feel, \u2018I am worthless, but I have, by the grace of my guru maharaja, been given the chance. So kindly accept whatever little service I can give. I am offensive. So kindly excuse me.\u2019 In this way be humble, meek, and offer your feeling, and Krsna will be satisfied. Not that you have to show how you can speak in Sanskrit language.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

A guest interjected with a sloka<\/i> from the Siksastaka<\/i> (3): \u201cTrnad api sunicena taror api sahisnuna amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih<\/i>.\u201d (\u201cOne who thinks himself lower than the grass, who is more tolerant than a tree, and who does not expect personal honor yet is always prepared to give all respect to others can very easily always chant the holy name of the Lord.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

Prabhupada explained further, \u201cAnasritah karma-phalam karyam karma karoti yah, sa sannyasi<\/i> [\u2018One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who works as he is obligated is in the renounced order of life\u2019 (Bg<\/i> 6.1).] Everyone is expecting some good result for his sense gratification. That is asritah karma-phalam<\/i>. He has taken the shelter of good result. But one who does not take shelter of the result of activities . . . \u2018It is my duty, karyam<\/i>.\u2019 Karyam<\/i> means \u2018It is my duty. It doesn\u2019t matter what is the result. I must do it sincerely to my best capacity. Then I don\u2019t care for the result. The result is in Krsna\u2019s hand.\u2019 Karyam<\/i>: \u2018It is my duty. My guru maharaja said it, so it is my duty. It doesn\u2019t matter whether it is successful or not successful. That depends on Krsna.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who works in this way is a sannyasi<\/i>\u2014not the dress, but the attitude of working. That is sannyasa<\/i>. Karyam<\/i>: \u2018It is my duty.\u2019 Sa sannyasi ca yogi ca<\/i>. He is a yogi, first-class yogi. Just like Arjuna. Arjuna did not officially take sannyasa<\/i>. He was a grhastha<\/i>, a soldier. But he took it very seriously, karyam<\/i>\u2014\u2018Krsna wants this fight. Never mind that I have to kill my relatives. I must do it\u2019\u2014that is sannyasa<\/i>. First he argued with Krsna, \u2018This kind of fighting is not good, family killing,\u2019 and so on. He argued. But after hearing the Bhagavad-gita<\/i>, when he understood, \u2018It is my duty. Krsna wants me to do it\u2019\u2014karyam<\/i>\u2014in spite of his being a householder, a soldier, he\u2019s a sannyasi<\/i>. He took it as karyam<\/i>: \u2018It is my duty.\u2019 That is real sannyasa<\/i>. \u2018Krsna wants that this Krsna consciousness movement must be spread, so this is my karyam<\/i>. This is my duty. And the direction is coming from my spiritual master, so I must do it.\u2019 This is sannyasa<\/i>, sannyasa<\/i> mentality. But there is formality. That may be accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThat has got some psychological effect,\u201d a guest added.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIn India especially,\u201d Prabhupada continued, \u201cpeople like. A sannyasi<\/i> may preach. Otherwise, the formula of sannyasa<\/i> is given\u2014karyam<\/i>: \u2018This is my only duty. That\u2019s all. The Krsna consciousness movement should be pushed. This is my only duty.\u2019 He\u2019s a sannyasi<\/i>. Because Krsna personally comes, He demands, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja<\/i> [\u2018Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me\u2019 (Bg<\/i> 18.66).]. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Krsna, says, yei krsna-tattva-vetta, sei \u2018guru\u2019 haya<\/i>: \u2018Anyone who knows the science of Krsna, he\u2019s guru.\u2019 And what is the guru\u2019s business? Yare dekha, tare kaha \u2018krsna\u2019-upadesa<\/i>\u2014\u2018Whomever you meet, just try to impress upon him the instruction of Krsna, sarva-dharman parityaja<\/i>.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this way, if you take it up very seriously\u2014\u2018This is my duty\u2019\u2014then you are a sannyasi<\/i>. That\u2019s all. Krsna certifies, sa sannyasi<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n
