And what an amazing success the launch of the book Gavopanishad (In Telugu) and Adopt a Village program was! The event happened on the 11th May, 2014 at the NTR Auditorium, Public Gardens, Hyderabad, AP. It was attended by an enthusiastic crowd of cow lovers of over 400. The event was covered by press from various papers and channels.

The Chief Guest of the event was His Holiness R.P. Bhakti Raghava Swami Maharaj (Minister, Iskcon Daiva Varnashrama Ministry, IDVM (India)). The guests of honor were Shri Dharam Raj ji Ranka (well known activist crusading for the protection of Mother Cow and its progeny) and Dr.G. Rajender Reddy (Noted Gandhian and disciple of Acharya Vinoba Bhave). The guest speakers on the occasion were Prof. K. Purushottam Reddy (Eminent Environmentalist, Academician, Development Activist), H.G. Hari Kirtan Das (Village Development Director, AP Co-ordinator for IDVM(India)) and H.G. Anandamay Das (BBT Manager for ISKCON, Hyderabad).

The program was compered by Bhaktin Nithika who moderated the event very competently. It started with her inviting the distinguished guests onto the Dias giving a short speech on each of their role in the protection of Mother Cow. It was followed by a beautiful rendition of the Gomata Stuthi by children and devotees and then by the lighting of the lamp by H.H.R.P. Bhakti Raghava Swami Maharaj. This was followed by the release of the book “Gavopanishad” and the launching of the brochure “Adopt a Village”. The next was the felicitation of H.G. Brahma Hari Das who took time to painstakingly translate the Gavopanishad into Telugu. He and the author of Gavopanishad, Gangagati DD (Geetha Reddy) were felicitated by H.H.R.P. Bhakti Raghava Swami Maharaj at this point.

This was followed by a short speech by the author of “Gavopanishad” Gangagati DD about the book and then started the speeches by the honorable speakers on the Dias. The first speaker of the day was Prof. K. Purushottam Reddy who is a noted environmentalist. In 1990, he launched a struggle against two export oriented mechanized slaughter houses in Medak District, with the slogan – “Save Cattle – Save Nation”. He popularized dictums such as Sustainable Development, Think Globally Act Locally etc. In his speech Prof. Purushottam Reddy emphasized on the fact that Mother Cow is indeed one of our 7 mothers. He mentioned that it was a wonderful co-incidence that the event was being conducted on the International Mother’s Day because Mother Cow provides for us more than our own biological mother and hence deserves to be protected and taken care of in all circumstances. He mentioned the importance of protecting the complete environment in general which he said would be impossible without protecting mother cow to begin with. Her protection is vital to the well being of the entire environment of this planet he mentioned. His speech was very engrossing.

The next speaker of the day was H.G. Hari Kirtan Das who is presently working as Village Development Director and AP Co-ordinator for Iskcon Daiva Varnashrama Ministry(India). He spoke in Telugu and explained to the audience the initiative launched on the day of “Adopt a Village” beautifully assisted by a slide show. The slide show educated the audience about the ancient Vedic techniques and tools that were used in our day to day life which worked in tandem with nature without destructing it. The slides showed the various tools and techniques being implemented such as Oil Ghani, Irrigating devices, etc. in the pilot project at Sahyadri Shri Krishna Balarama Kshetra in Hebri, Karnataka. It was an extremely fascinating presentation and educative speech which urged everyone to get back in touch with our roots by going back to villages. He explained the importance of sustainable methods of life especially for today’s generation and how by being cut off from our villages we are only working towards destruction.

The next speaker of the day H.G.Anandmay Das who has been working tirelessly with BBT for over 15 years now and has been actively involved in facilitating translation of Srila Prabhupada’s books into the Telugu language. He spoke in simple and beautiful words about the wonderful nature of mother cow and her importance. In regards to Adopt a Village initiative, he said that he has always been a city dweller and would first want the mercy to be adopted by a village. It was a beautiful speech enjoyed by all present.

This was followed by the speech by the guest of honor Dr.G.Rajender Reddy who had the audience in splits with his witty remarks about how the so called science which is supposed to help mankind is in fact being used to destroy it. He said that science is to be used within the limitations of it being beneficial and has to be discarded in instances where the risks far outweigh the benefits. He mentioned how today’s generation is blindly following science and running towards devastation at an alarming rate. He said that just a few decades back, we were leading a happy life with the centre of our life being mother cow and today by ignoring that basic principle; we are walking the path of destruction. The audience cheered for the speaker and his anecdotal references and was enthralled by the speech.

The next speaker was guest of honor Dharam Raj Ji Ranka who established Satyam Shivam Sundaram (SSS) Gau Nivas with a mission to protect India’s most revered animal ‘Cow’. He has fully dedicated his life for the cause of Cow Protection and has spearheaded the “Al Kabeer Hatao’ andolan (movement). He spoke very humbly requesting everyone present in the audience to keep up the spirit of loving Mother Cow and how if everyone just spared even one hour in a month or every 15 days to go to villages and educate farmers about the same, we might take a major step in protecting Mother Cow. He asked everyone to educate village people to not partake or sell the cows for any reason. His was a very inspiring speech and motivated everyone to take up this mission looking at his commitment to Mother Cow at his age of 70 years.

The most anticipated speech of the evening was that of HH RP Bhakti Raghava Swami Maharaj. He started with a verse from the Bhagavatam emphasizing on the importance of Mother Cow by stating that The Supreme Lord takes birth as a cow herd to engage in the service of cows. Lord Krishna is always referred to as “Go Brahmana Hitayacha”, one who is most eager to please cows and brahmanas. He stated that protection of cows is the fundamental issue that needs to be addressed not just in India but all over the world and that protecting cows is vital to ensure sustainability of the planet. He said cow protection is a science just as is living in harmony with nature. Therefore we all should learn to protect cows and live in harmony all over the world. He mentioned that this is not about religion. He said it is “Dharma” which is the natural quality of each person. We are in a very precarious and critical condition as of now and he said that anyone who believes in God, regardless of their denomination must come together to understand Dharma and Dharma begins with cows. The pillars of Dharma begin with cow protection.

He went on to elaborate the four enemies of Dharma which are Chemical Fertilizers, Chemical Pesticides, Mechanization and Hybrid Seeds. He stated that we are rushing towards urbanization and leaving our traditions thereby selling cows and land which is forbidden in our shastras. He said getting back in touch with our natural roots, serving mother cow and protecting her is the answer to a happy society. He said that villages cannot exist without cows and cows cannot exist without villages.

He also mentioned the importance of trees and forests by stating a beautiful example. He said that recently in Cambodia he came across a book written hundreds of years ago by a saintly person. The book was named “Vrikshayurveda” (The science of plants). He mentioned that there was a part in the book where they described that 10 wells equal one pond, 10 ponds equal one lake, 10 lakes equal one son and 10 sons equal one tree! This should enlighten us how important forests are and that cows always take shelter in forests. He said the supreme lord and Lord Balarama came as cowherds and were always engaged in the activities of taking the cows out to graze in the thousands of forests of Vrindavana thereby edifying us on the importance of forests. His was an enlightening speech enjoyed by one and all.

The speeches thus finished and this was followed by the vote of thanks by Srimati Nalla Sangeetha Reddy (Manasaganga Devi Dasi) who then invited everyone to join the “Go Puja” outside the auditorium which was to be followed by delicious prasadam. The Go Puja was enjoyed tremendously by all present and the devotees had a wonderful time dancing for the kirtan during the puja. All were hungry by this time and proceeded for prasadam which was scrumptious and was enjoyed fervently by one and all. The event was applauded by everyone present and everyone mentioned how much they enjoyed the function and were thankful for the insight they received on the subject of cow protection and village life. On the whole, the event was a tremendous success thanks to the blessings of Mother Cow!
