{"id":17825,"date":"2015-06-10T03:48:41","date_gmt":"2015-06-10T03:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/?p=17825"},"modified":"2015-06-10T03:48:41","modified_gmt":"2015-06-10T03:48:41","slug":"prabhupadas-family-bonds-at-15th-festival-of-inspiration-in-new-vrindaban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/?p=17825","title":{"rendered":"Prabhupada\u2019s Family Bonds At 15th Festival of Inspiration in New Vrindaban"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article_byline\">By Madhava Smullen<\/div>\n<div id=\"article_image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" data-reveal-id=\"zoomPhoto\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<!--Click to see larger image <br \/>--><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" ilo-full-src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/imgvers\/pod1_large.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/imgvers\/pod1_large.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"photo_credits\">Photo Credits: Laksman Poddar<\/div>\n<div class=\"photo_caption\">\n<p><em>The temple room is beautifully decorated with strings of balloons for Festival of Inspiration&#8217;s 15th anniversary<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div id=\"article_body\">\n<p>Six hundred devotees from all over North America may have attended the 15<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Festival of Inspiration at New Vrindaban, West Virginia over the May Mother\u2019s Day Weekend.<\/p>\n<p>But every single one this reporter spoke to described it as having an intimate, comfortable family mood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were just like good friends spending quality time with each other in a holy place,\u201d says participant Purnamasi Dasi, who hails from Toronto. \u201cAnd with so many Prabhupada disciples there, there was this powerful sense that Prabhupada is the spiritual father of all of us, and we were just there to be part of his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2000, Festival of Inspiration kicked off the \u201cspiritual retreat holiday\u201d template that is so common throughout ISKCON today, and with its packed roster of seminars on a broad range of topics, it remains one of the most popular and unique.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" ilo-full-src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod2.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"497\" width=\"750\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Deena Bandhu Das leads Govardhana Parikrama<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Each day of the three-day festival, from May 8<sup>th<\/sup> to 10<sup>th<\/sup>, began with the traditional temple morning program including a special hour-and-a-half long Srimad-Bhagavatam class by three distinguished speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Ravindra Svarupa Dasa and Jayadvaita Swami gave scholarly and incisive talks on Friday and Saturday, while Urmila Dasi\u2019s Mother\u2019s Day class connected every stage of a mother\u2019s life to Krishna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, she said that Krishna nourishes and sustains us, giving us food, water and air even though we don\u2019t recognize He\u2019s there, just like the baby in the mother\u2019s womb,\u201d says participant Haripriya Dasi, a second generation devotee. \u201cIt was incredible. It made me realize how every aspect of our lives can be connected to Krishna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each day then continued with four sessions of seminars, each session containing two to three concurrent seminars that partipants could choose from, for a total of sixteen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" ilo-full-src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod3.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod3.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"497\" width=\"750\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Govardhana Parikrama passes Kusum Sarovara<\/em><\/p>\n<p>ISKCON Communication Minister Anuttama Dasa\u2019s Appreciating Vaishnavas: The First Step in Devotee Care was one standout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt one point he had us all stand up, approach each other with folded hands and express our appreciation for each other\u2019s good qualities,\u201d says Haripriya. \u201cIt was life changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere Varshana Swami\u2019s \u201cOx Power, Dharma and the Golden Age\u201d on getting closer to nature and the simple life was all the more inspiring because the New Vrindaban resident lives what he preaches. Jayadvaita Swami\u2019s \u201cAnything Goes: Questions and Answers About Krishna Consciousness\u201d made short work of any doubt or query.<\/p>\n<p>And Deena Bandhu\u2019s Braja Lila seminar took devotees through the holy places of Vrindavana, India \u2013 followed by a Friday evening \u201cGovardhana Parikrama\u201d in which he physically led everyone on a tour of recreated holy places from Lord Krishna\u2019s pastimes along with his delightfully told stories.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" ilo-full-src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod4.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod4.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"756\" width=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Kamsa fears Krishna&#8217;s arrival in Bhaktimarga Swami&#8217;s play &#8216;Blue Mystic&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other seminars included \u201cKrishna Yoga: Be Fit to Serve Krishna\u201d by Gauranataraj Dasa; \u201cImproving Vaishnava Relationships\u201d by Kalakantha Dasa; \u201cGaudiya Vaishnavism: The Perfect Balance of Head and Heart\u201d by Dravida Dasa; \u201cPrabhupada is With Us\u201d by Gurudas, and more.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday evening, no less than fifty Srila Prabhupada disciples gathered in ISKCON New Vrindaban\u2019s temple room \u2013 decorated with strings of balloons for the Festival\u2019s 15<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary \u2013 to share their memories of their beloved guru.<\/p>\n<p>The guest of honor was Sally Agarwal, the lady who sponsored Srila Prabhupada\u2019s passage to America along with her husband Gopal and took him into her home in Butler, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Sweet, heartfelt, loving and effortlessly funny, her talk was described by many as the high point of the Festival. She spoke honestly about how at first she was afraid to have him stay in her house; how he took \u201cabout seven baths a day;\u201d and then how she cried when he left because she was afraid for him as he ventured into New York alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I guess he did alright,\u201d she said, guesturing around at the palacial temple room.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" ilo-full-src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod5.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod5.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"500\" width=\"750\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Sally Aggarwal, who hosted Srila Prabhupada in the U.S. speaks with Malati<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other devotees like Malati Dasi, Gurudas, Jayadvaita Swami, Bhaktimarga Swami, Navayogendra Swami, Agnideva Dasa, Ravindra Svarupa Dasa, Sudamani Dasi, Chintamani Dasi, Gopalasyapriya Dasi, Jayasri Dasi and many more all then shared their memories of Prabhupada \u2013 commenting on how merciful, forgiving, and personal he was with each devotee; how he understood their hearts and gave them what they needed.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout all these seminars, a Kids\u2019 Camp run by longtime New Vrindaban teacher Lilasuka Dasi and ISKCON New Vrindaban Board member Ananga Manjari Dasi engaged kids aged 4 to 15 so that their parents could freely attend the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith kirtan, storytelling, facepainting, and arts and crafts, they had a great time!\u201d says Festival coordinator Gauranga Prasad Dasa.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile three sumptuous prasadam meals a day kept energy levels up and devotees feeling cared for.&nbsp; Served in a giant white tent on New Vrindaban\u2019s bright green lawns, and honored at picnic tables against a backdrop of rolling hills, they were prepared by skilled devotional chefs like Shanka Das, Brihat Kirtan Das, and Radha Dasi.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" ilo-full-src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod6.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod6.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"500\" width=\"750\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Happily serving out prasadam<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Breakfasts had a choice of Granola with yoghurt and fruit, or kichari or upma with chutney, along with chai. Lunch included koftas, samosas, puris, halava and healthier options like mint rice, cucumber raita, and green bean and brussel sprout subji, along with mango lassi. And dinner featured options like bread, corn soup, lasagna, apple crepes and tea or hot milk.<\/p>\n<p>During the evenings, devotees socialized or attended kirtans with such kirtan legends as Agnideva Dasa, Havi Dasa, and Karanamrita Dasi.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday morning, after Urmila Dasi\u2019s Mother\u2019s Day themed Bhagavatam class, devotees surprised her with a huge five by three foot Mother\u2019s Day cake for her 60<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. Hundreds of devotees chanted \u201cHappy birthday\u201d in unison to the accompaniment of Ekalavya Dasa\u2019s trumpet \u2013 just one of the many delightful moments of Festival of Inspiration\u2019s 15<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>After a short day of seminars, devotees rushed to grab seats in the Community Hall for the festival\u2019s grande finale of spiritual entertainment at 12:30pm. First off, Bhaktimarga Swami\u2019s play \u201cBlue Mystic,\u201d about Lord Krishna\u2019s childhood pastimes killing demons in Vrindavana, gripped the audience. The cast of a dozen actors and puppeteers delivered knockout performances, expressive dance, and giant demons including a moving Aghasura with fearsome glowing red eyes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" ilo-full-src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod7.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/iskconnews.org\/media\/images\/pod7.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"500\" width=\"750\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Malati Dasi and Urmila Dasi cut the giant Mother&#8217;s Day cake<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Professional New York comic Yadhunath Das with Krishna Das and Bhaktin Megan followed with several pieces. In one skit, cops grilled a criminal in ISKCON vernacular, pushing him to finally admit, \u201cI did it! I was the one who wasn\u2019t sitting properly!\u201d In another, Yadunath recited a poem about someone who is inspired to chant by eating prasadam in the zany poetry style of Dr. Seuss. And in another, he switched tacks to deliver an extremely moving monologue about devotee care that moved many to tears.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone then tucked into a feast that had to be tasted to be believed, with rice, dahl, eggplant subji, matar paneer, puris, kachoris, pineapple chutney, gulabjamuns, mango sweet rice, and strawberry lemonade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prasadam was excellent, the entertainment was first class, and it was just wonderful meeting with all the devotees at Festival of Inspiration,\u201d said Urmila Dasi after attending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of the festival \u2013 that you get to meet old friends and make new ones,\u201d added early ISKCON pioneer Gurudas. \u201cIt had a wonderfully intimate feeling.
