Transforming it into reality, Srila Prabhupada, at the age of seventy, travelled across mighty oceans with a sole purpose to deliver us all with the holy name, which further grew into a big family worldwide trying to accomplish this purpose. Now, fifty years after his arrival, the holy name is slowly spreading all over the world. We have walked a few meters but we have much more miles to walk still. And this can only be accomplished if all of us, in our own respective areas, pledge to take the mission forward and through this, show our gratitude towards Srila Prabhupada for giving us the most valuable gift – Krishna Prema.

In the material world, many a times behind every action of ours, is our hidden ulterior selfish motive. That is also precisely why we never find real happiness within the material world. The spiritual world, however, does not harbor any such emotions. Spiritual life is about giving everything in service and receiving unlimited bliss through the mercy of Lord Krishna. Srila Prabhupada built a spiritual world in the material world where we could all perform services and a manifestation of his desire to spread the holy name around the world is the World Holy Name Week (WHNW). This week is specifically dedicated to bring together people of all faiths, irrespective of any belonging, cast or creed, to chant the holy names of Krishna and spread happiness throughout.

“Harer nama harer nama harer nama eva kevalam…” was quoted by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, instructing that there is no other deliverer than the holy name in this age of kali. While in Bengal, He spread the holy name Himself everywhere and bestowed everyone with Krishna prema. However, after He left, the responsibility to spread the holy name and to chant it’s glories was handed over to His disciples. Following the lineage, this became a mission for Srila Prabhupada, which brought him all the way to U.S. to engage everyone in the congregational chanting of the holy name. Coinciding with his arrival into the US, in 1996, ISKCON’s GBC decided to commemorate the day by marking it as the World Holy Name Day. With the increasing popularity of the event, this day was prolonged into a week, which we celebrate now. This year, the week will begin on September 24th, with the appearance day of Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur and concludes with the day Srila Prabhupada arrived in the U.S. Making this event more special, this year marks the 50th Anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s arrival into the U.S, thereby giving us more reasons to celebrate the occasion with enthusiasm and glee.

Let’s vow to make this week special this year. There are heaps of activities we all can perform in order to spread the holy name across every town and village, just what Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had predicted. From nagar sankirtans, to japa workshops, to retreats, the WHNW provides us with different avenues wherein each of us can utilize our potential and skills to creatively contribute to this event. If nothing, we can all, at least, pledge to chant extra rounds ourselves, thereby internally purifying ourselves. Each of our efforts count because Krishna does not see the results, he sees the efforts involved. Every action of ours to spread his name will please Him more and more.

For more information on different activities you can do during the World Holy Name Week, please log into www.worldholynameweek.com

Here’s wishing everyone a devotionally blissful WHNW.

Your Servant
Diksha

By Bhaktin Diksa

Let’s vow to make this week special this year.
