Mother earth was burdened, laden with grief,
\nwhen all the gods gathered to pray for relief.
\nFrom high in the universe their descent was grand,
\nas the Lord’s pastimes were about to expand.<\/p>\n
When Vasudeva rode with his new bride
\non a chariot bedecked with gold,
\nThere was heard a voice vibrating in the sky,
\nand the future was thus fortold.<\/p>\n
\u201cO weak hearted Kamsa your know not what your do,
\nescorting your sister away.
\nHer eighth son will be the death of you,
\nno matter how hard you pray.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lord, would appear as Vasudeva’s son,
\nthis prediction was made at his birth,
\nAnd transfer Himself from His father’s heart,
\nto protect the devotees, and save Mother earth.<\/p>\n
Cruel Kamsa could not bear to think of his death
\nso to save himself from trepidation,
\nHe imprisioned his sister and brother-in-law
\nTo fulfill Vasudeva’s foreboding stipulation.<\/p>\n
A moment of kindness touched the demon’s heart
\ndeclaring \u201cthis boy’s not the eighth son.\u201d
\nBut then changed his mind as evil played its part
\nAnd declared, \u201ckill them all!\u201d it could be any one.<\/p>\n
In Devaki’s womb, the Lord chose to reside,
\nthrough lifetimes of penance it became purified.
\nAnanta Deva made ready this sacred place,
\nFor Krsna to rest in all of His grace.<\/p>\n
Devaki sat in a grim prison cell,
\nwhen the gods came to offer prayers to the Lord,
\nBut as her beauty cast a radiant spell
\nKamsa marched in with his sword…<\/p>\n
Twas the night of Janamastami and all through the jail
\nThe guards were asleep wrapped Yogamaya’s veil.
\nOnly Kamsa lay awake in anxiety and dread
\nFor when Krsna was born he soon would be dead.<\/p>\n
Vasudeva and Devaki effulgent and bright,
\n their chains and bolted doors dismantled to their delight.
\nThe Lord became visible to His devotees sweet sight
\nAs they beheld their divine son who appeared that blessed night.<\/p>\n
In his mind Vasudeva gave thousands of cows,
\nhis heart was overwhelmed with joy,
\nTo celebrate that auspicious occasion,
\nthe birth of his all-mighty boy.<\/p>\n
With helmet and four arms and jeweled necklace clad
\nThe Lord baby Visnu implored, \u201cPlease don’t be sad.
\nLife times before you prayed for the Supreme as your son,
\nWho has now come to save you, His lila begun.\u201d<\/p>\n
As natural affection arose in their hearts
\nThe parents of God begged Him to hide,
\nBefore the hours of night time departs
\nAnd Kamsa approaches in his deadly stride.<\/p>\n
Within an instant the Lord changed His form,
\nThen bid his father go into the storm,
\nAnd carry Him to Braja in a basket on his head,
\nAcross the raging Yamuna by moonlight be led.
\nProtected by Sesa Naga with hoods fully spread,
\nAnd deliver Him to Yasoda in her maturnity bed.<\/p>\n
On the next morn Yasoda awoke
\nbeholding the babe at her side.
\nHe is the shelter of her motherly love
\nand the source of her transcendental pride.<\/p>\n
Whomever understands the deep meaning of the Lord’s divine birth,
\nand appreciates it recitation,
\nWill know the pure love as it’s practiced above,
\nthis realm of Maya’s flirtation.<\/p>\n
