Reducing Climate Change<\/font><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

After the history-making climate change <\/font><\/font><\/span>talks in Paris in December, ISKCON <\/font><\/font><\/span>is looking to increasing it's part in <\/font><\/font><\/span>addressing climate change. <\/font><\/font><\/span>During the talks, French president <\/font><\/font><\/span>Francois Hollande met with the leaders <\/font><\/font><\/span>of twenty faith-based groups at Elysee <\/font><\/font><\/span>Palace, where they presented him with <\/font><\/font><\/span>1.8 million signatures supporting a fair <\/font><\/font><\/span>climate change agreement.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The leaders included ISKCON <\/font><\/font><\/span>devotee Gopal-Lila das, who was <\/font><\/font><\/span>there representing the multi-faith <\/font><\/font><\/span>environmental organisation GreenFaith. <\/font><\/font><\/span>ISKCON is signed up to the Hindu <\/font><\/font><\/span>Declaration on Climate Change put <\/font><\/font><\/span>together by the Bhumi Project at the <\/font><\/font><\/span>Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, both <\/font><\/font><\/span>of which count devotees amongst their <\/font><\/font><\/span>staff.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

A major contribution of ISKCON to <\/font><\/font><\/span>the environment is its promotion of <\/font><\/font><\/span>vegetarianism. “Going vegetarian is <\/font><\/font><\/span>one of the quickest and best things an <\/font><\/font><\/span>individual can do to reduce their carbon <\/font><\/font><\/span>emissions,” explained Gopal-Lila das to <\/font><\/font><\/span>those he met in Paris.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

National Communications Day<\/font><\/strong><\/span>
\nThe special guest at this years National <\/font><\/font>Communications Day was Rev George <\/font><\/font>Pitcher, a journalist, public relations <\/font><\/font>pioneer and Anglican Priest. From <\/font><\/font>personal experience of dealing with <\/font><\/font>the media, he explained that expressing <\/font><\/font>honesty and humility are far more <\/font><\/font>productive than speaking dogma. <\/font><\/font>Devotees from across the UK descended <\/font><\/font>on the Manor that day. Mina Sharma, <\/font><\/font>the Head of ISKCON National <\/font><\/font>Communications, coordinated media <\/font><\/font>training workshops, focusing on both <\/font><\/font>traditional and social media. Devaki <\/font><\/font>dasi, the UK National Coordinator <\/font><\/font>of ISKCON 50 emphasised the <\/font><\/font>significance of this year’s celebrations <\/font><\/font>and encouraged everyone to do more <\/font><\/font>within their communities.<\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Rukmini Ramana das retires after 30 years of service<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\nAfter serving in the Manor’s Treasury <\/font><\/font>for nearly 30 years, Rukmini Ramana <\/font><\/font>das has is now retiring from his daily <\/font><\/font>duties. <\/font><\/font>He received initiation from Srila <\/font><\/font>Prabhupada in 1977, and whether at <\/font><\/font>the Manor or Caitanya College in <\/font><\/font>Worcestershire, he excelled in all the <\/font><\/font>services he took on: book distribution, <\/font><\/font>Temple Commander and various types <\/font><\/font>of administration. <\/font><\/font>“Rukmini Ramana prabhu was very <\/font><\/font>devoted to Srila Prabhupada and his <\/font><\/font>mission” explained fellow Treasurer <\/font><\/font>Nabaswati dasi. “He was philosophically <\/font><\/font>very sound and one of the most <\/font><\/font>equipoised and steady devotees I know.” <\/font><\/font>We wish him the very best for the future.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Remembering a friendship with George Harrison<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\nThe George Harrison Evening had a <\/font><\/font>very special guest who shared a variety <\/font><\/font>of fond memories. Gurudas was <\/font><\/font>amongst the small group of pioneer <\/font><\/font>devotees who became close friends <\/font><\/font>with George Harrison and his Beatles <\/font><\/font>bandmate John Lennon. When George <\/font><\/font>produced "The Radha Krishna Temple”, <\/font><\/font>an album of devotional music released <\/font><\/font>in 1971, Gurudas played and sang with <\/font><\/font>the other devotees. Dhananjaya das, who <\/font><\/font>recommended to George Harrison the <\/font><\/font>purchase of the Manor, was also present.<\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Touching many hearts:<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Acaryavan Das<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

January 1956 – December 2015<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

Acaryavan das came from a Berber <\/font><\/font>family residing in the mountains of <\/font><\/font>northeast Morocco, near the Algerian <\/font><\/font>border. He first came to know of <\/font><\/font>ISKCON and devotees after tasting some <\/font><\/font>mangal-arati sweets, and eventually <\/font><\/font>joined the temple in Paris during the <\/font><\/font>80’s. He quickly developed a reputation <\/font><\/font>for his culinary talent – particularly in <\/font><\/font>the art of cooking authentic, homemade <\/font><\/font>Moroccan couscous. He quickly <\/font><\/font>developed very close, lasting friendships <\/font><\/font>and relationships during his devotional <\/font><\/font>life. To his family, he remained a dear <\/font><\/font>father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and <\/font><\/font>nephew.<\/font><\/font>
\nIn gratitude to his homeland, he shared <\/font><\/font>the non-sectarian teachings of Krishna <\/font><\/font>consciousness in Morocco, Algeria and <\/font><\/font>Tunisia.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Building the Vedic Social Structure<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nHis Holiness Sivarama Swami has begun <\/font><\/font>a long-term project to build a template <\/font><\/font>for social structure in the ISKCON farm <\/font><\/font>community in Hungary, based on the <\/font><\/font>ancient varnasrama system.<\/font><\/font>During a two part seminar on the subject <\/font><\/font>delivered at the Manor, Maharaja <\/font><\/font>described in no uncertain terms about <\/font><\/font>how Srila Prabhupada had wanted <\/font><\/font>the development of varnasrama, the <\/font><\/font>backbone of a practical society that <\/font><\/font>complements the process of devotional <\/font><\/font>service.<\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

ISKCON Leicester Renovation<\/font><\/strong><\/span>
\nTo mark the 50th anniversary, ISKCON <\/font><\/font>Leicester have started some long <\/font><\/font>awaited renovation work in their new <\/font><\/font>building. The renovation will include <\/font><\/font>creating accommodation for 16 devotees <\/font><\/font>on the second floor, while on the first <\/font><\/font>floor a functional hall, offices, a small <\/font><\/font>kitchen and classrooms. The work will <\/font><\/font>be completed by May 2016. <\/font><\/font>Bhaktivedanta Manor are keenly <\/font><\/font>supporting this renovation and working <\/font><\/font>closely with the local ISKCON Leicester <\/font><\/font>team. Pranabandhu das, Rameshvar das <\/font><\/font>and Prashun Popat have made many visits <\/font><\/font>to Leicester to ensure that all parts of the <\/font><\/font>renovation, including the appointment <\/font><\/font>of contractors and design is all in place. <\/font><\/font>The total project cost of the two floors is <\/font><\/font>£350,000 and Bhaktivedanta Manor are <\/font><\/font>making a donation of £180,000 towards <\/font><\/font>this cost and encouraging the additional <\/font><\/font>fund raising.<\/font><\/font>

The Marathon Miracle<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/strong>
\nThe annual Book Marathon is always <\/font><\/font><\/span>a very special time, but last December <\/font><\/font><\/span>was extraordinary! In celebration of the <\/font><\/font><\/span>50th Anniversary since the incorporation <\/font><\/font><\/span>of the International Society for Krishna <\/font><\/font><\/span>Consciousness (ISKCON), the aim of <\/font><\/font><\/span>the Manor devotees was to distribute <\/font><\/font><\/span>100,000 of Srila Prabhupada’s book in <\/font><\/font><\/span>just one month!<\/font><\/font><\/span>
\nAfter a tremendous effort by more than 350 devotees <\/font><\/font><\/span>of all types, 131,340 books were distributed across <\/font><\/font><\/span>the UK, the largest Marathon score outside of India <\/font><\/font><\/span>and the most successful in over 20 years!<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The incredible efforts of many devotees, the <\/font><\/font><\/span>miraculous stories of books being distributed, <\/font><\/font><\/span>and the feeling of being intimately under Srila <\/font><\/font><\/span>Prabhupada’s direct shelter and care, remind us of <\/font><\/font><\/span>the all-auspicious nature of distributing his books <\/font><\/font><\/span>to the public. <\/font><\/font><\/span>Record numbers were involved: over fifteen sanga <\/font><\/font><\/span>teams, the Pandava Sena youth group, Sivarama <\/font><\/font><\/span>Swami’s team, Manor School alumni, travelling <\/font><\/font><\/span>ashram teams, fulltime householder distributors, <\/font><\/font><\/span>and many more. This effort was a very much <\/font><\/font><\/span>united community-wide achievement. The National <\/font><\/font><\/span>Sankirtan festival was held at the Manor in early <\/font><\/font><\/span>January, organised by Vishvambhara das the National <\/font><\/font><\/span>Coordinator for Sankirtana. Special guests included <\/font><\/font><\/span>Sivarama Swami, Praghosa das, Dayananda Swami <\/font><\/font><\/span>and Dhananjaya das .<\/font><\/font><\/span>
\nFour of the top five individual street distributors <\/font><\/font><\/span>were from the Manor. Second place nationally was <\/font><\/font><\/span>Ananda Caitanya das, third was Bhakta Ganesh, <\/font><\/font><\/span>fourth Janakinath das and fifth place and the top <\/font><\/font><\/span>lady distributor was Guru Shakti dasi. The winners <\/font><\/font><\/span>of the Team contact’ category was once again the <\/font><\/font><\/span>Manor’s Bhakti Vriksha group!<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Cross-Faith Meeting<\/font><\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\nOn a visit to Sheffield, Kripamoya das <\/font><\/font>presented Reverend Dr. John Vincent <\/font><\/font>with a copy of his The Guru & Disciple <\/font><\/font>Book. The Ashram Community Trust <\/font><\/font>is a Christian organisation in Sheffield, <\/font><\/font>Yorkshire which was founded in 1965. <\/font><\/font>The group runs welfare, educational, <\/font><\/font>and health food projects in the city. Its <\/font><\/font>founder, the Reverend Dr. John Vincent, <\/font><\/font>former head of the Methodist Church, <\/font><\/font>has made a lifetime study of the theology <\/font><\/font>of discipleship according to the Bible.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

50 new frontiers for the Holy Name<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\nThe Manor's weekend Harinama team <\/font><\/font>has taken ISKCON’s 50th Anniversary <\/font><\/font>to heart. The team aims to perform <\/font><\/font>harinama street processions in no <\/font><\/font>less than 50 towns that have never <\/font><\/font>experienced it before!<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

"It is an exciting project,” Ananta <\/font><\/font>Purusottama das explained, “We started <\/font><\/font>last September during the Holy Name <\/font><\/font>week. So far we have already covered <\/font><\/font>32 new frontiers! Every Saturday we <\/font><\/font>meet at 11am in the Manor's main car <\/font><\/font>park. The last Saturday of each month <\/font><\/font>up to the summer we will leave at 10am <\/font><\/font>to set off on a longer expedition. Come <\/font><\/font>and join us and experience the joy of <\/font><\/font>harinam!"<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

Soul Expressions – Warming the Winter<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Soul Expressions is a monthly event <\/font><\/font>which makes devotional music <\/font><\/font>accessible to everyone and especially <\/font><\/font>aimed at those unfamiliar with Krishna <\/font><\/font>consciousness.<\/font><\/font>
\nOver 70 newcomers attended a special <\/font><\/font>winter party organised by the Krishna <\/font><\/font>Wisdom team. The documentary is an <\/font><\/font>unconventional biography about the <\/font><\/font>Swami who brought yoga and meditation <\/font><\/font>to the West in the 1920s.
