{"id":26055,"date":"2016-04-02T15:25:10","date_gmt":"2016-04-02T13:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/?p=26055"},"modified":"2016-04-02T15:29:14","modified_gmt":"2016-04-02T13:29:14","slug":"the-validity-of-dandavata-parikrama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/?p=26055","title":{"rendered":"The Validity of Dandavata Parikrama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/IU9V6B8.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Hari Parshad Das<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>The term <b><i><span>parikram\u0101 <\/span><\/i><\/b>is a synonym for the term <b><i><span>pradak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Both terms are used synonymously.<\/p>\n<p>For example, while performing <i><span>parikram\u0101 <\/span><\/i>of <i>tulas\u012b-dev\u012b<\/i>, we call it a <i><span>pradak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101<\/span><span> <\/span><\/i>\u2014 \u201c<i>t\u0101ni t\u0101ni pra\u1e47a\u015byanti <b><span>pradak\u1e63i\u1e47a\u1e25<\/span> <\/b>pade pade<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Parikram\u0101 <\/span><\/i><\/b>means \u2014 To completely (<i><span>pari<\/span><\/i>) travel around (<i><span>krama<\/span><\/i>).<\/p>\n<p><i><b><span>Pradak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101<\/span><span> <\/span><\/b><\/i>means \u2014 To walk around completely (<i><span>pra<\/span><\/i>) while keeping the deity to the right (<i><span>dak\u1e63i\u1e47a<\/span><\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>The <b><i><span>Hari-bhakti-vil\u0101sa<\/span><\/i><\/b> (8.393) specifies the method for performing <i><span>Parikram\u0101\/Pradak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101<\/span><\/i> of any deity of the Lord:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><span><b><i>tata\u1e25 pradak\u1e63in\u0101\u1e41 kury\u0101d<\/i><\/b><\/span><br \/><span><b><i>bhakty\u0101 bhagavato hare\u1e25<\/i><\/b><\/span><br \/><span><b><i>n\u0101m\u0101ni k\u012brtayan \u015baktau<\/i><\/b><\/span><br \/><span><b><i>t\u0101\u1e41 ca s\u0101\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga-vandan\u0101m<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><b><span>Translation<\/span><\/b>: Thus, one must perform <i><span>Pradak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101 <\/span><\/i>of the Lord with devotion, while chanting his names. If one has the required strength, one should perform it with <i><span>a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga-pra\u1e47\u0101mas<\/span><\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><b><span>Commentary by Srila Sanatana Goswami<\/span><\/b>: <i><span>\u015baktau saty\u0101\u00f1ca t\u0101\u1e41 pradak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101m a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45gena vandanena pra\u1e47\u0101mena sahit\u0101\u1e41 kury\u0101t<\/span><br \/><\/i><br \/><b><span>Translation of Commentary<\/span><\/b>: If one has the required strength then the same <i><span>pradak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101 <\/span><\/i>should be performed with <i><span>a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga-pra\u1e47\u0101mas<\/span><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b><span>Definition of A\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga-pra\u1e47\u0101ma (from <\/span><span>Hari-bhakti-vil\u0101sa<\/span><\/b><span><b> 8.162)<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><i><b><span>dorbhy\u0101\u1e41 p\u0101dbhy\u0101\u1e41 ca j\u0101nubhy\u0101m<\/span><br \/><span>uras\u0101 \u015biras\u0101 d\u1e5b\u015b\u0101<\/span><br \/><span>manas\u0101 vacas\u0101 ceti<\/span><br \/><span>pra\u1e47\u0101mo\u2019\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga \u012brita\u1e25<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<p><span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><b>Translation<\/b>:<\/span> The <i>pra\u1e47\u0101ma <\/i>which is performed using the (1) two hands, (2) the two legs, (3) two knees, (4) chest, (5) head, (6) eyes, (7) mind and (8) words is known as <b><i>a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga-pra\u1e47\u0101ma<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b><span>Note of caution for ladies performing <\/span><i><span>a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga-pra\u1e47\u0101ma<\/span><\/i><span> (From the <\/span><span><i>Skanda-pur\u0101\u1e47a, V\u0101sudeva-m\u0101h\u0101tmya<\/i> <\/span><span>section, Chapter 29, Verse 27)<\/span><\/b>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><i><b><span>a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga\u1e41 v\u0101 &#8216;pi pa\u00f1c\u0101\u1e45ga\u1e41<\/span><\/b><\/i><br \/><i><b><span>pra\u1e47\u0101ma\u1e41 puru\u1e63as caret<\/span><\/b><\/i><br \/><i><b><span>pa\u00f1c\u0101\u1e45gam eva n\u0101r\u012b tu<\/span><\/b><\/i><br \/><i><b><span>n\u0101nyath\u0101 muni-sattam<\/span>a<\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<p><b>Translation<\/b>: The  men may perform <i><span>a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga <\/span><\/i>or <i><span>pa\u00f1c\u0101\u1e45ga pra\u1e47\u0101mas<\/span><\/i> (according to their  capacity). However the women should perform <i><span>pa\u00f1c\u0101\u1e45ga <\/span><\/i>only and not otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><b><span>Being non-judgmental about <\/span><span>Govardhana-parikram\u0101<\/span><\/b>: Sometimes devotees think that barefoot <i><span>parikram\u0101 <\/span><\/i>of Govardhana is superior to wearing shoes, or that walking is superior to taking a vehicle. One should not consider one type of <i><span>parikram\u0101 <\/span><\/i>as superior to another. Srila Jiva Goswami says in the <i><b><span>Gop\u0101la-camp\u016b<\/span><\/b><span><\/span><\/i><span> <\/span>(<span><\/span><i><span><\/span><b><span>P\u016brva<\/span><\/b><\/i>, 15):<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><i><b><span>n\u0101tr\u0101py a\u1e45ghri-kr\u0101mit\u0101va\u015byakatva\u1e41<\/span><br \/><span>svacchandatv\u0101d y\u0101nam apy atra di\u1e63\u1e6dam<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<p><b><span>Translation<\/span><\/b>: It is not required that the <i><span>parikram\u0101 <\/span><\/i>should be performed by foot.
