{"id":29758,"date":"2016-07-22T06:49:33","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T04:49:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dandavats.tumblr.com\/post\/147782561181"},"modified":"2017-01-26T18:34:14","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T17:34:14","slug":"krishna-lunch-begins-serving-its-own-organic-produce-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/?p=29758","title":{"rendered":"Krishna Lunch begins serving its own organic produce. \nMonday&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38352\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/wp-content\/uploads6\/tumblr_oap9elYNrx1sbj0vuo1_500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tumblr_oap9elYNrx1sbj0vuo1_500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tumblr_oap9elYNrx1sbj0vuo1_500-249x187.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Krishna Lunch begins serving its own organic produce. <br \/>\nMonday through Friday, hundreds of people gather on the Plaza of the Americas to stand in line for Krishna Lunch.<br \/>\nKrishna Lunch has begun featuring foods grown organically in a local garden, maintained by the group\u2019s members.<br \/>\nIn mid-Spring, Krishna devotees began planting a garden about 20 minutes north of UF\u2019s campus, said Dhristadyumna \u201cDennis\u201d Das, the 34-year-old temple commander for the Gainesville Krishna House.<br \/>\nThe garden, located at 13700 U.S. Highway 441, had been empty for about eight years until the owner offered the land to Gainesville\u2019s Hare Krishnas, Das said.<br \/>\nDas is known for serving beverages at Krishna Lunch, calling out the names of those who pass by.<br \/>\nUsing the property, about three-fourths of an acre in size, the group has planted lettuce, kale, okra, zucchini, cucumber, eggplant and more, Das said.<br \/>\n\u201cMost people don\u2019t know where their food comes from,\u201d Das said. \u201cThis is local and fresh.\u201d<br \/>\nFor a few weeks during Summer A, 70 to 90 percent of the lettuce served at Krishna Lunch was grown in the garden, Das said.<br \/>\nHe said organic eggplants will soon be ready to be served with lunches every Tuesday until November.<br \/>\nDiners may not know where Krishna Lunch currently gets its produce, but that has not stopped some students.<br \/>\n\u201cI trust them enough to know they have good ingredients,\u201d said Aria Nguyen, an 18-year-old UF dietetics sophomore who said she eats Krishna Lunch every Wednesday.<br \/>\nNguyen said she loves the healthy food options at Krishna Lunch, but that\u2019s not why she enjoys the experience so much.<br \/>\n\u201cThe food is the whole reason I came, and I stayed for the people,\u201d Nguyen said.<br \/>\nShe said she hopes the garden expands and produces more fresh ingredients, as more students would be likely to eat Krishna Lunch.<br \/>\n\u201cKrishna changed me,\u201d she said. \u201cI have a different view on food, the environment and animals now.\u201d<br \/>\nCurrently, the ingredients are delivered by Cheney Brothers and Taylor Farms, Das said.<br \/>\nHe said the garden will not raise the price of Krishna Lunch.
