Who is a bonafide Guru?
\nSrila Prabhupada: The qualification of a spiritual master is that he must have realized the conclusions of the scriptures by deliberation and arguments and thus be able to convince others of these conclusions. Such great personalities who have taken shelter of the Supreme Godhead, leaving aside all material considerations, are to be understood as bona fide spiritual masters. \u2014 NOD Ch. 7

A<\/strong> Ready<\/strong> Reckoner<\/strong> from<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c7r\u00e9la<\/strong> Bhaktisiddh\u00e4nta<\/strong> Sarasvat\u00e9<\/strong> \u00d6h\u00e4kura<\/strong><\/p>\n

pr\u00e4k\u00e5ta-rasera \u00e7ik\u00f1\u00e4-bhik\u00f1\u00e4 \u00e7i\u00f1ye c\u00e4ya n\u00e4<\/strong>
\nrati bin\u00e4 jei rasa t\u00e4h\u00e4 guru deya n\u00e4<\/strong><\/p>\n

The true disciples never desire to ask their spiritual master for instructions regarding material mellows. The genuine spiritual master never gives his disciples any such material mellows, which are devoid of rati<\/em>, transcendental loving attachment to the Lord. (2)<\/p>\n

nija-bhogya k\u00e4me bhakta \u2018prema\u2019 kabhu bole n\u00e4<\/strong>
\n\u2018rase \u00f2agamaga acho\u2019 \u00e7i\u00f1ye guru bole n\u00e4<\/strong><\/p>\n

Selfish enjoyment of one\u2019s own senses in mundane lust is never called prema<\/em> (love of Godhead) by the genuine devotee. A bonafide spiritual master never tells his disciple, \u201cYou are absorbed in the mellows of divine rasa<\/em>.\u201d (8)<\/p>\n

\u2018rase \u00f2agamaga \u00e4mi\u2019 kabhu guru bole n\u00e4<\/strong>
\nja\u00f2\u00e9ya rasera kath\u00e4 \u00e7i\u00f1ye guru bole n\u00e4<\/strong><\/p>\n

The genuine spiritual master never claims, \u201cI am absorbed in the mellows of divine rasa<\/em>.\u201d The guru never talks idly with his disciples on subjects of gross worldly mellows. (9)<\/p>\n

n\u00e4me-rase bheda \u00e4che, guru \u00e7ik\u00f1\u00e4 deya n\u00e4<\/strong>
\nrasa l\u00e4bha kori\u2019 \u00e7e\u00f1e s\u00e4dhana to\u2019 haya n\u00e4<\/strong><\/p>\n

The bonafide spiritual master never teaches that there is a difference between the Holy Name of K\u00e5\u00f1\u00eba and rasa<\/em>. Even after attaining actual rasa<\/em>, the regulative principles of devotional service are never concluded. (12)<\/p>\n

\ns\u00e4dhanete rati rasa guru kabhu bole n\u00e4<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pure devotee of K\u00e5\u00f1\u00eba never speaks of anything other than rasa<\/em>, transcendental mellow, that is endowed with rati<\/em>, loving attachment. The guru never claims that rati<\/em> and rasa<\/em> are present within the practice of preliminary devotion (s\u00e4dhana<\/em> bhakti<\/em>). (15)<\/p>\n

The genuine spiritual master never asserts that the revelation of the Lord\u2019s Holy Name is separate from His form. The genuine spiritual master never claims that the revelation of the Lord\u2019s Holy Name is separate from His qualities. (32)<\/p>\n

rasa \u00e4ge, rati p\u00e4che, r\u00fcp\u00e4nug\u00e4 bole n\u00e4<\/strong>
\nrasa \u00e4ge, \u00e7raddh\u00e4 p\u00e4che, guru kabhu bole n\u00e4<\/strong><\/p>\n

The true followers of \u00c7r\u00e9la R\u00fcpa Gosv\u00e4m\u00e9 never say that the stage of realizing transcendental mellows (rasa<\/em>) precedes the development of loving devotional attachment (rati<\/em>). The bonafide spiritual master will never profess that the realization of such mellows precedes the development of pure faith (\u00e7raddh\u00e4<\/em>). (34)<\/p>\n

guru-mah\u00e4jana-v\u00e4kye bheda kabhu haya n\u00e4<\/strong>
\ns\u00e4dhanera pathe k\u00e4\u00ec\u00f6\u00e4 sad-guru deya n\u00e4<\/strong><\/p>\n

There can never be any difference between the explanations of the bonafide spiritual master and the teachings of the great devotees (mah\u00e4janas<\/em>). The pure spiritual master never puts thorn-like deterrents on the path of one\u2019s execution of practical devotional service (s\u00e4dhana<\/em>). (54)<\/p>\n
