Is submissive hearing the same as submissive reading?
\nCintamani Dhama-dasi: I have a 40 page document of Acarya-vani on this tattva. The conclusion is that submissive reading from the self-realized person is THE SAME as submissive hearing from the self-realized person \u2026 but that submissive hearing is still MORE EFFECTIVE than reading. It\u2019s NOT a question of either \/ or. It\u2019s a matter of perfect & more perfect. If we are reading submissively (not academically), we will apply what we read and we will hanker and cry for more association with self-realized souls. And just because we are getting mercy by \u201creading\u201d Sri Guru doesn\u2019t mean we can dodge having to formally surrender to Sri Guru when he appears in the body of the instructor or initiator. Don\u2019t be \u201csatisfied\u201d with the book alone. But don\u2019t underestimate the mercy of the book.
\nSRILA PRABHUPADA\u2019s letter to: Punjabi Premanand: Bombay, 16 April, 1976:
\n\u201cReading or hearing from the realized person there is no difference, but hearing the sound vibration from the realized soul is still more effective, better.\u201d

\n\u201cThere are two categories of hearing from elevated devotees \u2013 to hear literature composed by a great devotee, and to hear literature recited by a great devotee.\u201d

\n\u201cTo hear about the names, forms, qualities, pastimes and associates of the Lord is supremely auspicious. Superior to this is to hear the essays written by elevated devotees, and when such compositions are sung by a great devotee, the benefit is greater still. To hear Srimad-bhagavatam is superior even to this, and better yet when sung by a great devotee. [\u2026] if one does not have the fortune to hear directly what is sung by a great devotee, one should personally sing the same topics of the Lord on one\u2019s own, because hearing is a primary process. [\u2026] Sridhara Swami comments: If a speaker is present, the sadhus will hear the names of the Lord recited by her or him; if an audience is present, the sadhus will recite these names for their benefit; and if neither speaker nor audience is present, the sadhus will sing themselves.\u201d

\nSRILA BHAKTISIDDHANTA SARASVATI THAKURA:
\n\u201cBy always reading spiritual magazines and studying the literature written by the mahjanas while constantly begging for Sri Guru-Gauranga\u2019s mercy, we can attain the result of hearing krsna-katha from the mouths of the devotees. Although in this material world we cannot always meet with devotees from the spiritual world, the pastimes and conversations of the devotees who were contemporaries of Mahaprabhu have been permanently recorded in books. Therefore there is no need for disappointment. If we live somewhere and discuss krsna-katha, we will certainly attain auspiciousness and nothing can harm us.\u201d
\n\u201cIn order to test us, the Supreme Lord is always present behind what we can see.[\u2026] If we wish to pass the test, we must hear krsna-katha from the pure devotees.
