In the middle of the Ardennes Mountains, amidst extremely beautiful forests and mighty rivers, in an ancient castle that dates back to the knights\u2019 era, stands the largest Hindu center Radhadesh \u2013 a place of pilgrimage for Krishna lovers. Actually, any curious traveler is encouraged to visit this place at least once in a lifetime. In the green heart of the Belgian Ardenne Mountains (that are not very tall), within a five-<\/span>minute drive from Durbuy (the smallest city in the world), hides a medieval castle called <\/span>Ch\u00e2teau <\/span>de Petite Somme. The castle was built in the 11<\/span>th<\/span> century and up until WWI it <\/span>was<\/span> populated by noble families. From the beginning of WWI and until the end of WWII, the castle served as a hospital for wounded soldiers, but it stood empty up until the end of 1970s. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
A drastic change in the fate of the castle happened in 1979 \u2013 the year <\/span>when <\/span>it became<\/span> a home for members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. The place took an \u201cinitiation\u201d and was renamed into Radhadesh \u2013 the abode of Radha. After many years of thorough renovations the castle was turned by the<\/span> new tenants<\/span> into an oasis of the Vaisnava culture and philosophy<\/span>. Today, Radhadesh is a spiritual center for the entire Benelux community, the main office for GBC\u2019s <\/span>representatives in Europe<\/span><\/span>, and an official sightseeing location in Belgium that welcomes dozens of tourists everyday.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Places to see in Radhadesh<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
The castle<\/span><\/strong> \nDuring the tour, you will learn about the unique philosophy of Vaisnavism, watch a documentary <\/span>on<\/span> the history of the castle and local community, visit a magnificent alter room that is decorated with light marble<\/span>, stop by the room of Srila Prabhupada, and, finally, get to see the tower that <\/span>offers <\/span>an observation dec<\/span>k. Rumor has it that this<\/span> tower is still haunted with ghosts!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
The Museum of Sacred Art (MOSA)<\/strong> \n<\/span>When at the museum, you will see the <\/span>works that resemble classical Indian art as well as<\/span> the modern pieces that are inspired by various religions and philosophies. You will also be able to enjoy kirtan and a classical Indian dance when touring the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n
Bhaktivedanta College \n<\/strong>This is a unique college that offers an undergraduate degree in theology (accredi<\/span>ted by Chester University, UK) and <\/span>an MBA <\/span>(Alfred Ford Management Program, accredited by several prestigious French universities). The college also offers Bhakti-Sastri courses, Bhakti-Vaibhava courses, the ISKCON Disciple course, and many more topic-specific courses that are designed around kirtan and yoga.<\/span><\/p>\n
Govinda\u2019s Restaurant and Cafeteria \n<\/strong>The classical Indian Thali, pizza, veggie burgers, scrumptious cakes, and a delightful Italian ice cream (carob and pistachio options are available!) are just some of the items that create a paradise for prasadarians, vegetarians, and vegans!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
The bakery<\/strong> \n<\/span>Since 1989, this family-run bakery has been supplying the community with freshly baked bread, rolls, cookies, and jams. You must try their crusty and savory olive bread, amazing flan, <\/span>delicate marzipan, and t<\/span>he coconu<\/span>t cookies, which have become a delicious symbol of Radhadesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
<\/span>The bookstore<\/strong> \n<\/span>Forget about leaving this place without a purchase. The bookstore is a <\/span>true <\/span>Mecca for those who appreciate philosophy and rare books. Here you <\/span>will <\/span>find a variety of books published by the BBT, classical Vaisnava texts, and also the newest devotional books. Make sure to check the <\/span>clearance<\/span> shelf!<\/span><\/p>\n
The boutique<\/strong> \n<\/span>It offers a wide selection of items from India that <\/span>were<\/span> carefully <\/span>picked <\/span>by <\/span>experienced<\/span> buyers. The farm<\/strong> \n<\/span>There are a few cows that live in Radhadesh and are being taken care of by the members of the community. You are welcome to get involved in the organic farming by helping th<\/span>e farmers milk their cows or <\/span>by <\/span>weeding the gardens.<\/span><\/p>\n
Tulasi\u2019s house<\/strong> \n<\/span>The first shrubs of Tulasi (holy basil \u2013 one of the most auspicious plants in Ayurveda) were brought to Radhadesh in<\/span> 1980. Ever since that time, this special<\/span> plant has grown<\/span> to the point that it now occupies an entire shed that looks like a green house. <\/span><\/p>\n
<\/span>Forest and garden<\/strong> \n<\/span>The Ardenne Mountains were glorified by the great Shakespeare! <\/span>Among the things visitors enjoy most <\/span>when visiting Radhadesh are hiking in the enchanted forest and <\/span>taking walks <\/span>in the castle\u2019s well-kept garden.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Radhadesh G<\/span>uest House, which is a stand-alone building located nearby the castle, offers 15 cozy rooms that are equipped with everything you need. You <\/span>can also <\/span>choose to stay at the temple\u2019s ashram (located inside the castle) if you prefer a more economical and ascetic stay.<\/span><\/p>\n
