The appearance of the wonderful and gigantic incarnation of Visnu as the mountainlike boar did not fill them with any kind of fear, although the Lord’s resounding voice was tumultuous and echoed horribly in all directions as an open threat to all demons who might challenge His omnipotency.

(invocatory prayers)

Candramauli Swami: Today we are continuing the unfolding of this really amazing pastime of the Lord. One thing that is a prerequisite for understanding these pastimes is that we cannot understand. They are acintya. This is confirmed by Srila Jiva Goswami who explains that unless one accepts the acintya nature of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one cannot practice devotional service because the nature of the Lord is inconceivable, but it becomes understood according to a devotee’s degree of surrender in devotional service. Krsna reveals himself accordingly. Srila Prabhupada states in this section of purports, by sincere devotion and affection, he emphasizes these things, by affectionate devotion, Krsna gradually reveals himself.

These pastimes of the Lord are really amazing. Why does he perform these pastimes? Krsna explains in Bhagavad-gita why he does:

yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srjamy aham

paritranaya sadhunam vinsaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge

Whenever there is a rise in irreligion, a rise of the demons within the world, the Lord descends. But as we heard from the previous speakers and classes, especially yesterday in the class, it was explained how the Lord does not need to descend to kill the demons. He can do it simply by his will. He doesn’t have to come to this material world. Or he can create a cataclysm and destroy all the demons.

Krsna’s power is inconceivable. In a lecture Prabhupada explains that Krsna is so powerful that he can change day into night and night into day. How to conceive such an impossible? We cannot even conceive of how that can happen, what to speak of when it happens. This is the nature of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is inconceivable.

But he comes in these incarnations especially to give pleasure to his devotees. It is mentioned here that the Lord roared. When he roared that gave assurance to Lord Brahma and to the sages in the higher planets that this was actually the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When the form of the Lord appeared, everyone was bewildered, especially Lord Brahma. Although he has the greatest intelligence, still he could not understand what this was. How is it possible to understand that the Lord would take an incarnation as a boar?

Prabhupada explains that the boar is one of the most abominable creatures. If you had to give votes to animals as far as popularity, the boar wouldn’t get too many votes. It would probably get nothing. But the Lord is not a boar, although he assumes that form, he does that in order to give pleasure to his devotees. It is perfectly arranged for the particular type of pastime that he wants to perform.

What was that? The earth had fallen down into the Garbhodaka Ocean. This had disturbed the entire creation of Brahma. All the living entities were also in danger. So the Lord performed this particular pastime by incarnating as a boar. It says that he dove into the water and then he rescued the earth.

Then, when he had rescued the earth, he shook himself off because he had water all over him. The water sprinkled on the residents of the higher planets and they felt blessed. It is explained that if a boar, especially if he is wet and he shakes his body and the water falls on you, you wouldn’t be so happy. But because it was the Supreme Personality of Godhead and each one of those drops was like cintamani upon the bodies of the residents of the higher planets, they felt enlivened by that.

And the Lord was enlivened by their prayers. It says he roared twice. The first time he roared it gave everyone assurance that this was the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When he came, the residents of the higher planets started offering beautiful prayers to the Lord. You can read as we go on in this chapter, beautiful prayers offered the residents of the higher planets, especially Tapoloka, Janaloka, and Satyaloka. Then the second roar was to give thanks or appreciation to the devotees for their beautiful prayers. In other words, he acknowledged their prayers upon his appearance. The Lord wanted to reciprocate with his devotees.

The devotees find great happiness in hearing about these pastimes, although the demons, even the non-devotees, cannot understand, even if one has great intellectual ability. We find today in universities people study these particular aspects of Vedic culture. They take up these studies. They become academicians. Then they conjecture, they hypothesize, they give some conclusion, but because there is no devotion, they cannot understand anything.

Krsna explains in Bhagavad-gita only by undivided devotional service can I be known as I am. He is speaking to Arjuna: “Stand before me and thus be seen directly, only in this way can you enter into the mystery of my pastimes.”

We may read these pastimes and get an understanding, but Krsna reveals his nature to the devotee as the devotee surrenders more and more in devotional service. That is the key to understanding. How is that understood? How does Krsna reveal that? That spiritual knowledge is not philosophical. It is philosophical, but beyond that, it is realized knowledge.

We might use an example. You are sitting in front of a big plate of food. You are about to take food and someone is explaining to you what it is, how it is cooked, what are the ingredients, who cooked it, so may things, even glorifying it, but still, you can only get a little understanding. You actually have to taste it to become satisfied by it. That is the realization. In the same way, these pastimes are understood in that way.

When the Lord touched the earth, the earth became pregnant by the touch of the Lord. One son of the Lord came. His name was Naraka. Later on he became Narakasura, the demon. He also had another name, Bhaumasura. He was actually the son of the earth. The Lord, as explained in the tenth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, he killed him. He killed his own son. You might think, “Wow, how is that possible? How could a father kill his son?” But in this case, the person is a demon. So Krsna is impartial. He shows no partialities:

samo ‘ham sarva-bhutesu na me dvesyo ‘sti na priyah

He says, “I envy no one. I am partial to no one, but anyone who renders devotional service to me, I become a friend and one becomes a friend to me also.”

So if one is favorable to render devotional service to the Lord, the Lord favors them. If one becomes a demon, the Lord favors them by killing them. Who was Hiranyaksa? He was actually Vijaya. It was Jaya and Vijaya, the two gatekeepers from Vaikuntha who are personal servants of the Lord in the spiritual world. They had somehow or other committed offense to great sages, the four Kumaras. Because of that offense, they were forced to take up these three manifestations of demons: Hiranyaksa, Hiranyakasipu; Ravana, Kumbhakarna; Dantavakra, and Sisupala.

It was arranged in such a way that this was the Lord’s will. The Lord likes to fight. He likes to fight. The fighting propensity we see within the conditioned soul, becomes a form of misery, the propensity is there in the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So Krsna likes to fight. In the spiritual world he cannot because everyone is a devotee, so he comes to the material world. These demons are actually doing a great service to the Lord by facilitating the Lord’s desire to engage in fighting spirit. When they get killed by the Lord, they actually get the supreme mercy of the Lord. This is the Lord’s mercy.

But it is seen here that Hiranyaksa was disturbing the earth in such a way that the earth actually lost its balance. This disturbance was caused by exploiting gold from the earth. Hiranyaksa, he is the manifestation of the principle of greed. Each of the six demons have a particular outstanding anartha. Hiranyaksa was the manifestation of greed. He was so greedy. He did not consider anyone else but his own selfishness. He took so much gold of the earth that it lost its balance and fell into the Garbhodaka Ocean.

Today Prabhupada makes that comparison in the modern day they are also exploiting the earth. For what? For oil. So much so that it is causing so many difficulties within the environment. I was just listening to a lecture by Gopal Krsna Maharaja. Actually we were together giving a lecture in Pune. He was giving some statistics which were quite astonishing that the scientists today, respectable scientists, who are considered to be respectable within the scientific community, are saying that the calamities happening within the earth are one hundred and fifty years ahead of time.

In other words, these things should be happening a hundred and fifty years from now, but because of today’s modern lifestyle that is based on supreme exploitation of the earth, there are so many material calamities within society, so many. Actually the statistics are alarming: earthquakes, tidal waves, volcanoes, droughts, pestilence, so many wars. These are all due to the sinful activities of the living entities. Modern day leaders, who are in guise of leadership, are like little Hiranyaksas, more or less exploiting the earth for as much natural resources as possible, especially oil. That is the cause of all these different calamities.

Krsna has come again in the form of his Holy Name as the incarnation in this age to push back the demoniac influence in this world. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he is the manifestation of all incarnations. In fact, he is not an incarnation. He is called avatari. He is the source of all avataras. When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was here, he exhibited his pastimes. In his exhibition of pastimes, he revealed himself as various incarnations.

In the house of Murari Gupta, the Lord performed this particular pastime as we read here in the Srimad Bhagavatam. In order to show his love, happiness for his devotee Murari Gupta, he performed this wonderful pastime. He incarnated, presented himself as the form of the boar. He took Murari Gupta’s little water pot, placed it on his head as if he was taking the earth out of the Garbhodaka Ocean.

Lord Caitanya also performed many of these pastimes of the other incarnations. He also performed the pastime of manifesting his lila as Lord Nrsimhadeva when Srivasa Thakur was fearful of the Chand Kazi, that he would come and destroy the sankirtan movement. He had already broken the drum. Now he was threatening to kill everyone in the villages that performed sankirtan. Srivasa was in his house praying to his Deity Lord Nrsimahdeva.

Lord Caitanya, when he was coming by the house, he understood the prayers of Srivasa Thakur. He broke down Srivasa Thakur’s door, came into the house and said, “Srivasa, there is nothing to fear when I am here. What can this Kazi do?” Then he went on to explain that ultimately there is no difference between me and Lord Nrsimhadeva. He started manifesting his mood as Lord Nrismhadeva, he was angry. Lord Caitanya performed many of these pastimes.

All the forms of the Lord are transcendental. There is no material consideration, although he appears in various forms. The Lord appears in actually all the eight million forms within creation. He appears in every species of life simply to attract that species towards him. That way they elevate themselves on the evolutionary chain. How merciful is the Lord! We cannot understand how merciful. When we speak of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, we understand that he is the supreme manifestation of all mercy. His mercy cannot be even calculated. Even Krsna and his other manifestations and other forms, how merciful!

There is that beautiful story in Srimad-Bhagavatam how he killed Putana witch. When Uddhava was remembering the pastimes of the Lord, when he was approached by Maitreya and asked about the Lord, he went into an ecstasy remembering the pastimes of the Lord. He recited a beautiful verse from the third canto: aho baki yam stana-kala-kutam, the first line, who else is more merciful, who else can I possibly think to take shelter than one who gave the position of his mother to Putana witch? He is overwhelmed with ecstasy thinking how kind Krsna is. This witch came simply to kill him and the Lord accepted her as his mother and gave her liberation.

How merciful Krsna is. He simply comes to kill the demons and to give them, ultimately, his supreme mercy because when the Lord kills the demons, the demons are benefited. The Lord is equal in all sense. The demons actually, in one sense, please Krsna, but they don’t get bhakti. How do they please Krsna? In two ways. In this case, Hiranyaksa is fighting, so the Lord is exhibiting his fighting spirit. He is pleased with that. Another reason is that the demons cause havoc to the devotees. What do the devotees do, a real devotee, when they are in trouble? They take shelter of Krsna. The demons facilitate the devotees’ dependence on the Lord.

Right? When we are in a difficult situation, we become more Krsna conscious? Yes? It is usually like that. When things are going nicely, apparently according to our plans, the urgency and the emergency to take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not so prominent. But Krsna’s mercy is there. Sometimes he does that.

Brahma became bewildered. The supreme CEO within the universe, he is in charge of the entire universe. He has the intelligence to create the manifestation where all living entities are placed within their karmic situations and he became bewildered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. What did he do? He went into deep thought and by his deep thought upon the Lord, the Lord actually appeared.

This is very significant. We should not wait for difficulties to come because difficulties are always there. This is the material world. Padam padam yad vipadam, at every step there is danger. What is the greatest danger? It is not death, actually, because the soul never dies. The soul is immortal. The body is never alive. We say sometimes that we die, but there is no such thing as death. That is simply the feature of the ending of the activities of this body. The body is never alive. The soul is never not alive, or eternal. When the soul leaves the body, the body stops functioning. When the soul is there, the body is working, but the body is simply a combination of material ingredients. Death is not the worst thing.

The Visnu Purana gives what is the worst thing, what is the greatest calamity, what is the greatest misfortune, what is the greatest mistake? To forget the Supreme Personality of Godhead for one moment. I am thinking if I remember, that’s good, but the verse is actually saying if you forget, that is the worse thing.

In Mayapur we are here to come together to associate with devotees, to chant the Holy Names of the Lord, to take wonderful darshan of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. There are so many opportunities to remember the Lord. We should take advantage of that, especially the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord.

It is said that in Vrindavan dham, Krsna’s personal abode, one can achieve the mercy of love of God simply by the dust of Vrindavan. Dust of Vrindavan is non-different than Krsna. When one rolls in the dust of Vrindavan, it is directly the mercy of the Lord. One can achieve prema-bhakti through this cintamani. In Mayapur dham that same feature is given through the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord:

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

In Jagannath Puri, is the Lord is more merciful in Puri? You simply take his prasad and you get love of Godhead. [Haribol!] It is easy to take prasad. In fact, devotees are expert at that. [Laughter] It is one of the qualities of a Vaisnava, especially in ISKCON. But prasad is non-different. Jagannath prasad is so wonderful. So these features of the different dhams are placed there to help us achieve the ultimate principle of life, which is pure love of God.

So take time, and as much as possible, absorb ourselves in the chanting the Holy Names of the Lord. Then Krsna, through his mercy, he reveals himself. It is said that as one chants the Holy Names of the Lord, through the power of the Lord’s Holy Name, one can realize Krsna as being non-different from his name. As one develops the process of purifying oneself of the offenses and anarthas, then one can realize Krsna in his forms, then his qualities, and ultimately, his pastimes. All this is orchestrated by the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord. The Holy Names of the Lord are the essence of all spiritual progress.

Srila Prabhupada said, “Out of all my instructions to my devotees, the most important instruction is that every day devotees should chant sixteen rounds on beads without fail.” We all know, in the scriptures there is so much emphasis on the glories of the Holy Name.

Here in Sri Mayapur dham, the personal abode of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, how much more potency that Holy Name gives simply by absorption in the Holy Names of the Lord and hearing the glories of the Lord. Sravanam kirtanam krsna smaranam, the more we hear the glories of the Lord, the more we chant the glories of the Lord, the more we remember the glories of the Lord. Through remembrance once achieves the perfection of life.

To always remember and Krsna and never forget Krsna. That one beautiful verse is mentioned in the Caitanya-caritamrta, all the regulative principles follow these two regulative principles, to always remember and Krsna and never forget Krsna. Through the chanting of the Holy Name, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Srila Prabhupada have us given this wonderful process. So take advantage of that and chant:

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Prabhupada used to say, chant and be happy. And you know there is a purport to that? Simple purport, but it is a powerful purport that if you are looking for happiness somewhere else, you cannot chant and be happy. You have to understand that all happiness we are looking for is found in Krsna’s Holy Name:

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Srila Prabhupada ki jai! Hare Krsna. Any questions, comments? Do we have a microphone?

Vasudeva Das: The verse is mentioning the roaring voice of Lord Boar. This roaring voice brings illumination to the brahmanas and twice-born. Maybe you can remind us of the roaring voice of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada?

Candramauli Swami: You want me to roar? Anukarana, anusarana, I am not going to imitate Prabhupada. The roaring voice of Srila Prabhupada is, in Prabhupada’s roaring voice, “Stop all your nonsense and chant Hare Krsna!” Why waste your time speaking about so many other things, this-that, this-that. There are so many topics to talk about. That is one part of Prabhupada’s roar.

Prabhupada was talking. He was in Mayapur. He said, “You are here in Mayapur. Just chant Hare Krsna and take prasadam. That’s all.” He was speaking about the glories of Mayapur.

Another time Prabhupada was comparing the austerities of the great sages to the austerities we have now in our practice of Krsna consciousness. He was talking about Visvamitra Muni. He was a ksatriya and he wanted to become a brahmana. He wanted to have brahma-tejas. Having been defeated by Vasistha Muni, he understood that brahmana power is greater than ksatriya power. So he sat in the middle of seven fires right under the blazing hot sun. In the winter time, he immersed himself in cold water up to his neck and he would meditate.

Prabhupada said, “You cannot perform any of those austerities, nor is it necessary to perform those austerities. Your austerity is to chant Hare Krsna and you cannot even do that.” That is what Prabhupada said, “You cannot even do that.” There is no hope. So that is a little bit of the roar of Prabhupada.

We have to see that in this age, Lord Caitanya has made it easy, but how do we develop attraction for chanting the Holy Names of the Lord? This is understood:

susrusoh sraddadhanasya vasudeva-katha-rucih
syan mahat-sevaya viprah punya-tirtha-nisevanat

By serving great souls, one gets attraction for hearing and chanting. We are trying to serve the Vaisnavas. We serve the spiritual master, we serve the Vaisnavas, that desire to hear and chant increases by the mercy of the Lord.

Is that enough roaring? Any more questions, comments?

Navakishore Das: Maharaja you mentioned that chanting Hare Krsna in Mayapur helps develop love of God. So many devotees come here [unclear].

Candramauli Swami: By being in the dham, how can we develop a stronger taste for chanting the Holy Name? By serving devotees. The more we serve the Vaisnavas, the more we develop that taste for chanting because Krsna is plased when we serve the devotees. The more we serve the Vaisnavas the more we are actually serving Krsna. Krsna says one who is my devotee is not my devotee but one who says he is devotee of my devotee is actually my devotee. Prabhupada emphasizes this point by saying, “one hundred times removed”. The more we are in the mood of serving the Vaisnavas, the more we get attraction for chanting the Holy Names of the Lord. Krsna is pleased.

Visala Prabhu: Prabhupada said material world means envy and spiritual world means non-envy. He said you can tell you are in the material world if you are envious. If you are in the spiritual world, you would actually be non-envious. I think I read in Bhagavatam that the material world [unclear] the mahat-tattva is in the spiritual world. Could you comment in that?

Candramauli Swami: The part about envy or the mahat-tattva?

Visala Prabhu: The material energy, there is no material energy in the spiritual world.

Candramauli Swami: No, it is based on our consciousness. If our consciousness is in material consciousness, we are in the material world. It depends on your consciousness. The more you become Krsna conscious, the more you push out the material energy. The dham facilitates that. The dham is above all the material energy, but can we really enter into the dham by being physically in the dham? Being physically in the dham does not mean you are in the dham. It means you are getting there. The dham is a consciousness. As we attain that consciousness, then we can actually enter into the spiritual world.

Visala Prabhu: You mentioned consciousness. Is that wherever you are is Vrindavan? It does not necessarily have to be. It can be in Miami, Florida or Germany, some hellish place. Is it the consciousness and not the place according to if one is actually non-envious he is in the spiritual world wherever he may be?

Candramauli Swami: Yes, you can be here and be in maya. You can be out somewhere in the material energy in a very difficult situation and be in the spiritual world. It is all based on consciousness. But the dham facilitates the consciousness. That is why we are here. The dham facilitates it to a large degree. It is easier here because of the mercy.

OK, thank you very much. Srila Prabhupada ki jai!
