By Iskcon Mayapur<\/strong><\/p>\n jaya jaya \u015br\u012bv\u0101s\u0101di gaura-bhakta-ga\u1e47a What is the significance of \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura to devotees in the line of \u015ar\u012b Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu? \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura is one of the five Pa\u00f1ca-tattva, and worshipable to all aspiring servants of the Lord. \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura is the leader of all the devotees of Lord Caitanya; the general of Mah\u0101prabhu\u2019s army. <\/p>\n He is the leader because he represents the perfection of devotional service to the Lord manifested in j\u012bva-tattva. Of the five Pa\u00f1ca-tattva, it is \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura alone who is j\u012bva-tattva, or a manifestation of the marginal energy of the Lord. Thus, in terms of tattva, he is of the same category as all the souls in this world. But because he eternally engages in the worship of the Supreme Lord, he is described by \u015ar\u012bla\u00a0Prabhup\u0101da as being worshipable and in the same category as the other four Pa\u00f1ca-tattva.<\/p>\n \u201cLord \u015ar\u012b Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu is the Supreme Lord, and Nity\u0101nanda Prabhu and Advaita Prabhu are manifestations of the Supreme Lord. All of Them are\u00a0vi\u1e63\u1e47u-tattva,\u00a0the Supreme, and are therefore worshipable by the living entities. Although the other two\u00a0tattvas within the category of Pa\u00f1ca-tattva \u2014 namely,\u00a0\u015bakti-tattva\u00a0and\u00a0j\u012bva-tattva,\u00a0represented by Gad\u0101dhara and \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u2014 are worshipers of the Supreme Lord, they are in the same category because they eternally engage in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.\u201d (\u015ar\u012b Caitanya-carit\u0101m\u1e5bta, \u0100di 7.15, Purport)<\/p>\n If \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura, as the perfect devotee, is the leader of all the followers of Lord Caitanya, then how should devotees look to him as their leader? One way \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura performs his role as a general in Mah\u0101prabhu\u2019s army is by providing an example of how devotees should fight against m\u0101y\u0101. <\/p>\n \u015ar\u012bla\u00a0Prabhup\u0101da describes in his purport to \u015ar\u012bmad-Bh\u0101gavatam 4.11.1: \u201c\u015ar\u012b Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu has also given us a nice weapon for this age, as stated in the Bh\u0101gavatam: s\u0101\u1e45gop\u0101\u1e45g\u0101stra\u2014in this age, the n\u0101r\u0101ya\u1e47\u0101stra, or weapon to drive away m\u0101y\u0101, is the chanting of the Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a mantra in pursuance of the associates of Lord Caitanya, such as Advaita Prabhu, Nity\u0101nanda, Gad\u0101dhara and \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa.\u201d<\/p>\n This weapon of the holy name was utilized perfectly by \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura. He took complete shelter of the holy names of the Lord. It is described by \u015ar\u012bla V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana\u00a0d\u0101sa\u00a0\u1e6ch\u0101kura that \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura and his brothers were constantly absorbed in singing the names of Lord K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. It was in the home of \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura that \u015ar\u012b Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu performed His most intimate sa\u1e45k\u012brtana pastimes. Those nocturnal k\u012brtanas are compared to the r\u0101sa-l\u012bl\u0101s of Lord K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, for they are the topmost and most ecstatic of the Lord\u2019s pastimes. <\/p>\n \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura also exemplifies complete faith in and surrender to the Lord. \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa and his brothers are described thus: \u201cThese four brothers and their family members fully engaged in the service of Lord Caitanya. They knew no other god or goddess.\u201d (\u015ar\u012b Caitanya-carit\u0101m\u1e5bta, \u0100di 10.11). \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura and his family did not engage in anything other than the service of the Lord and His holy names. Day and night, they would simply chant. In fact, they did nothing to maintain themselves. <\/p>\n Lord Caitanya once asked \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa how he maintained his family, and \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa merely clapped his hands three times. The Lord asked him to explain the meaning of this clap, and \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura explained that if for three days no food came to his family, he would drown himself in the Ganges. Lord Caitanya became agitated and reminded \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s promise in Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101\u00a0that for those who worship Him with exclusive devotion, He will preserve what they have and carry what they lack. Lord Caitanya asserted that \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura would never be lacking \u2013 even if the goddess of fortune herself became poverty-stricken, the house of \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa would never lack anything, because He, \u015ar\u012b Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu, would personally provide whatever was needed. <\/p>\n \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura had such faith in the Lord that the Lord Himself promised to personally care for him and his family. This cannot be imitated, as faith and surrender cannot be falsely manufactured, but it demonstrates the greatness and devotion of \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura.<\/p>\n Honoring \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura on his appearance day is important to all who are or are aspiring to be gaura-bhaktas.
