Peter Cosgrove: Governor General, Lieutennat General, Chief of Army, Commander, Royal Australian Regiment.<\/p>\n

Due to the arrival of the Australian royalty in an entourage of 4 cars and a Mercedes limo, the main thorough fare (Rajadhirsen Marga) adjacent to R\u0101dh\u0101 Parth-sarathi Mandir, was blocked off. Sir Peter Cosgrove, along with his wife, Lady Cosgrove, was the first ever Governor General of Australia to visit an Iskcon center, accompanied by such dignitaries as Her excellency Ms. Harinder Kaur Sidhu, the Honorable High Commissioner of Australia to India and a team of nearly 15 Australian High Commission officials, guarded by security agents, wearing dark suits, sunglasses and communication earpieces. Also, 100 Indian security personnel and police officers were on hand.<\/p>\n

Representing Iskcon was a team of senior devotees: HH Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaja, the governing body commissioner of Iskcon, HH. Bhaktisiddhanta Swami, resident sanny\u0101s\u012b, \u015ar\u012b Vrajendranandan d\u0101sa, the National Communication Director of Iskcon India, Ramanroop d\u0101sa, Minister of Foreign affairs, Mohan Rupa, the President of Iskcon New Delhi, and \u015ar\u012b Raghava Pandit d\u0101sa, Vice-president.<\/p>\n

In this grand reception, colorful garlands were offered, with umbrellas to ward off the hot sun, surrounded by new recruit brahmac\u0101r\u012bs (locally known as bumble bees), who led a joyful kirtan (His excellency quipped, \u2018Who are those happy personalities in the hot sun?\u2019) for the pleasure the newly arrived royalty, and supportive temple managerial brass. As we walked up to the temple, His Holiness Gopal K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a Goswami stood and met the Governor with another garland; now a complete welcome indeed.<\/p>\n

He was a very softhearted gentleman that carried a very authoritarian demeanor as a Governor, General, and Military commander. His wife, being very soft spoken, introduced herself and shook hands with all around. They both were seated, removed their shoes, washed hands, entered the temple, garlanded the murti of Srila Prabhupada, and posed with His Holiness for photos before His Divine Grace. Then the couple went to the Gaura Nitai altar, received another garland, and satari (lotus feet) of the deities. Next was the large deity of N\u1e5bsi\u1e41hadeva with Hira\u1e47yaka\u015bipu, sporting a ripped stomach of scattered intestinal entrails (I was thinking, \u2018Oh no what will be the Governor\u2019s first impression be?!\u2019). HH. Gopal K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a explained simply, \u2018That this was a form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who has just killed a demon!\u2019 Then his excellency replied (being a military man), \u2018Well he certainly must have deserved it! A very impressive and comical response.<\/p>\n

He was not judgmental, but very broadminded, quite exemplary for a man in his position. We then went R\u0101dha-P\u0101rthas\u0101rathi\u2019s altar, where both husband and wife performed a ghee plate arotik to their Lordships with the complimentary satari, then we went to Sita-R\u0101ma\u2019s altar and took dar\u015bana. In the circumambulation corridor behind the Lordships, were many paintings and photos of Iskcon deities around the world. He asked many questions about the paintings like, \u2018Are these originals and are these paintings duplicated in other parts of the world?\u2019<\/p>\n

A secret service agent kept nudging me saying, \u2018Please tell Guruji to move more quickly, all the while prodding us forward due to our slow pace and a tight schedule. After relaying the message, His Holiness responded with a smirk said, \u2018Ah not to worry.\u2019 Yes, why disturb the most important event of this man\u2019s life?<\/p>\n

His Holiness pointed to a picture of \u015ar\u012b \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101-Giridhari (Who is very rotund due to some excellent cooking) presiding at our Auckland farm, the General turned back to his wife with an appreciation of a K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a close to Home, \u2018Hey these are the deities from Auckland, New Zealand.\u2019 After the parikrama, and partaking of carin\u0101m\u1e5bita, we exited the temple, at this point his excellency wore 3 thick garlands (at least 2 kilos worth) but preferred not to take them off, but accept the offering and first of a lifetime, flower fashions, never experienced before.<\/p>\n

After again washing hands and putting on shoes, we then went to the VIP room for discussion and exchanges. HH. Holiness Gopal K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a first presented an informative folder with regard our centers and projects in Australia, which was graciously received, then a Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101, describing it as \u2018An ancient book of wisdom,\u2019 a framed photo of the deities, followed by the large \u2018Dar\u015ban Book\u2019 with all the pictures from our Iskcon centers around the world. Gopal Krsna Mah\u0101r\u0101j said, \u2018Keep it in your home, it will bring good luck.\u2019 Then Peter said, \u2018Oh I can read this on the plane, no really I will actually place it in my office where many can look at it.\u2019<\/p>\n

Drinks and rich fattening cake snacks decorated the table before us, the Governor General commented that he was on a strict diet, His Holiness Gopal Krsna replied, \u2018There is a Bengali saying \u2018You dress to please others and and you eat to please your stomach,\u2019 and jested pointing to the snacks, \u2018These are calorie free.\u2019 The General replied, \u2018Yeh\u2026I have heard that before but that does not work for me\u2019(laughter).<\/p>\n

The Governor General then gave a gift. In his humility he said, \u2018Though it is not much, this is the Governor medallion, and looking at the medal, added, \u2018Well I think if they ask the story of that medallion, you could say, it came from a very grateful man who represents people who we hope who are very tolerant and embrace society. I look forward when I can see your co-religionists in Australia, and can tell them that I have met you here.\u2019<\/p>\n

(This medallion has been placed in glass exhibit in the VIP lounge.)<\/p>\n

In the closing moments, because of a tight schedule of the Governor, His Holiness concluded, \u2018We are glad you came and we hope that the Lord blesses you and gives you good health and strength to lead your country and the rest of the world, the Lord has placed you in a very important position; you have an army background, and it does not happen by chance. There is something known as the law of karma, you have piety in your background, the Lord gave you that responsible position.\u2019 Peter replied, \u2018I am probably in some ways one of the best sort of Governors General to have, the last thing that I would ever want is to see my country at war, I would never want to see an Australian go through that experience.\u2019<\/p>\n

The entire party went back to the cars, the Governor general, whole heartedly thanked us for his visit. And looking at His Holiness Gopal Krsna Goswami thanked him for the kind hospitality.<\/p>\n

For Sir Peter Cosgrove, the visit, the most important 37 minutes of his life was over; for us, a good fortune of another day in seva; but surely K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, for such a pious, kind-hearted leader, would allow him to cross paths with us again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
