We could implement it in our ISKCON way to get everyone into Krishna Consciousness.

20 young boys (of the youth group) were given the target to bring one particular village in kerala into the ‘art of living ‘movement. They did it !!! Do you know how ??!! Please read along :-

The 20 boys picked up one ward of 500 houses. They did not introduce themselves as ‘art of living’movement. They introduced themselves as belonging to a ‘punar-jivi’ group, that they have come to work for the welfare of the village.

So they first started off with a ‘survey’. In the survey, they went from house to house, taking down the details of the family – no of people in the house, age, schooling/working, their income, their monthly expense, their family problems, crisis, … etc. Then they invited all the villagers for a meeting in which they made them aware of how Govt provides funds to the panchayat for the village welfare, but the panchayat heads misutilise it for their own selfish needs. Everyday meetings were held and somehow they made a close relationship with the villagers.

Once a close relationship was established, one day, they suggested to the villagers to decide on ‘organic farming’, explaining them the needs and advantages of self-farming, teaching them to depend on agriculture, depend on themselves for their needs, on how famine could be avoided thru this …. etc… etc. They convinced the villagers that every house will grow a particular crop / vegetable within their own land. Seeds, manure and the required facilities were provided to each house to grow the crop. Every 10 or 20 house would grow one particular crop, the next 20 homes would grow another crop, in this way the seeds were distributed to each and every home. A particular date and time were given to them to sow the seeds. Thus the whole village got into sowing together. These boys kept constant watch on whether they are taking proper care of the crops by meeting them and talking with them every day.

Every weekend they would have some village-programs being conducted for entertainment. They also provided them with some counsellings, free medical camps were organised… etc. In this way, they developed a faith in the villagerS upon this team that – yes, these people have come to do good for us.

After a few months, they called upon a ‘Harvest Day’. Each villager had to bring his own-grown crop for sale to the rest of the villagers. Every one enthusiastically brought their particular crop / vegetables/ flowers … etc whatever was cultivated and they had a big sale. It was a grand success. The villagers enjoyed this event. Then in the next meeting they decided that the crops grown in the village will be sold to the people in the village only and not to the next village/outside.

Meanwhile, they also formed children’s club, youth club, ladies club, conducted personality development programs, solving the family/social problems ,how to avoid tensions in exams … etc.

In this way, they have won over the villagers by taking care of their basic needs and demands and problems. Now they have started introducing the ‘art of living’ courses to the people, by getting the villagers to gather every evening for a satsang in which they do kirtans followed by classes on sanatana dharma. Explaining to them that this is the traditional way of indian life, to gather every evening for satsangs. They explain the scientific importance of every traditional culture, like why one should wear a bindi or tilak, why sindoor is put by married women, why ornaments are worn, what is the effect of all these on our body and mind, how it affects the flow of energies in our body, and why each culture is practised …. etc. By this, even the christians and muslims have started appreciating and respecting these traditional cultures of india. They also like to practise them.

They also provide jobs to people, but for that there is one condition – that the person has to do the ‘art of living’ course.

The muslims in kerala have challenged that by the year 2020 there will be no woman wearing a bindi in kerala. Mass conversion going on all around India. Fighting against this, the ‘Art of living ‘movement is striving to spread the ‘sanatana dharma’. They are doing the ground work for ISKCON’s next generation . But, today we in ISKCON, could adopt some of their themes to acheive self-farming and a Krishna conscious world, to please Srila Prabhupada and Lord Gauranga.

Please distribute this news to everyone in iskcon. If someone, somewhere, in some part of the world, would try this out and be successfull, that will be an impetus for the rest of the iskcon movements to follow.

By Bhaktin Sindhu Rakesh

Here’s an article on how the ‘Art Of Living’ movement have brought a WHOLE VILLAGE completely into their movement in 6 months !!
