{"id":6590,"date":"2008-10-18T06:02:26","date_gmt":"2008-10-18T05:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/?p=6590"},"modified":"2008-10-18T06:02:26","modified_gmt":"2008-10-18T05:02:26","slug":"the-pastimes-of-sri-damodara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dandavats.com\/?p=6590","title":{"rendered":"The pastimes of Sri Damodara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Payonidhi das:<br \/>\nThere is a wonderful pastime of Krsna staling butter from Garga Samhita from the 1<br \/>\ncanto chapter 17 of this book ,I like to share it as this is the month we meditate<br \/>\non Krsna as the butterthief:<\/p>\n<p>Chapter Seventeen<\/p>\n<p>Description of the Yogurt Theft<\/p>\n<p>Text 1<\/p>\n<p>Sri N\u00e4rada said: With Their pastimes the two handsome fair and dark boys, Krsna<br \/>\nand Balar\u00e4ma, made Nanda\\\u2019s palace beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Text 2<\/p>\n<p>  O king of Mithil\u00e4, They crawled on Their hands and knees and soon They were<br \/>\nspeaking sweet words in Vraja.<\/p>\n<p>Text 3<\/p>\n<p> Yasod\u00e4 and Rohini fed, fondled and caressed the two boys. When did the boys<br \/>\nleave their laps? To whose lap did They go?<\/p>\n<p>Text 4<\/p>\n<p>  Tinkling Their anklets and small bells, They enchanted the three worlds as They<br \/>\nwent here and there. By the influence of Their Yogam\u00e4y\u00e4 potency They manifested the<br \/>\nforms of two small boys. <\/p>\n<p>Text 5<\/p>\n<p>When her son\\\u2019s limbs were dark, anointed with dust by playing in the courtyard<br \/>\nwith the boys of Vraja, Yasod\u00e4 took Him and bathed Him with great care.<\/p>\n<p>Text 6<\/p>\n<p> On His hands and knees crawling first to the courtyard and then to His mother\\\u2019s<br \/>\nlap, Krsna was like a lion cub splendidly playing in Vraja. <\/p>\n<p>Text 7<\/p>\n<p>Gazing at her son dressed in yellow garments decorated with gold and splendid<br \/>\nwith a crown of jewels, Yasod\u00e4 became happy.<\/p>\n<p>Text 8<\/p>\n<p>Forgetting their homes, leaving them behind and coming to King Nanda\\\u2019s cowherd<br \/>\nvillage, all the gopis gazed at the charming and playful child Mukunda and became<br \/>\nvery happy.<\/p>\n<p>Text 9<\/p>\n<p>When infant Krsna saw the statue of a lion at the entrance to King Nanda\\\u2019s home,<br \/>\nHe became frightened and began to cry. The gopis took Him inside and compassionately<br \/>\nspoke to Yasod\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p>Text 10<\/p>\n<p> The gopis said: O beautiful one, don\\\u2019t take this restless and playful boy<br \/>\ndecorated with crows\\\u2019 feathers and the milk still in His mouth out of the courtyard<br \/>\nto play. <\/p>\n<p>Text 11<\/p>\n<p> O Yasod\u00e4, your son\\\u2019s two front teeth have now appeared. Now his maternal uncle<br \/>\nshould perform a ceremony to ward off inauspiciousness, but your son has no maternal<br \/>\nuncle.<\/p>\n<p>Text 12<\/p>\n<p> .Therefore, to destroy all obstacles you should give charity, chant Vedic<br \/>\nprayers, and worship the cows, br\u00e4hmanas, demigods, and saintly devotees.<\/p>\n<p>Text 13<\/p>\n<p> Then, to bring auspiciousness to their sons, Yasod\u00e4 and Rohini regularly gave<br \/>\ngarments, jewels, and new grains in charity.<\/p>\n<p>Text 14<\/p>\n<p> . Now walking on their two feet among the gopas\\\u2019s homes, and their glances like<br \/>\nthose of a lion\\\u2019s cub, Krsna and Balar\u00e4ma grew in the village of Vraja.<\/p>\n<p>Text 15<\/p>\n<p> With the boys of Vraja, Their friends headed by Srid\u00e4m\u00e4 and Subala, They played<br \/>\non the Yamun\u00e4\\\u2019s sandy shore.<\/p>\n<p>Text 16<\/p>\n<p>   In the Yamun\u00e4\\\u2019s forests opulent with kadamba groves and sturdy black tam\u00e4la<br \/>\ntrees, Krsna and Balar\u00e4ma walked.<\/p>\n<p>Text 17<\/p>\n<p> .Delighting the gopas and gop\u00e9s with His childhood pastimes, with His friends<br \/>\nLord Hari stole butter and ghee.<\/p>\n<p>Text 18<\/p>\n<p> One day Prabh\u00e4vati-gopi, who was Upananda\\\u2019s wife, came to Nanda\\\u2019s palace and<br \/>\nspoke to Yasod\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p>Text 19<\/p>\n<p> .Sri Prabh\u00e4vati said: O Yasod\u00e4, for the two of us there is no separate property<br \/>\nin butter, ghee, milk, yogurt, and buttermilk. By your kindness yours is also<br \/>\nmine.<\/p>\n<p>Text 20<\/p>\n<p>  I don\\\u2019t say you taught Him to steal. You didn\\\u2019t teach Him. Your son steals<br \/>\nbutter on His own.<\/p>\n<p>Text 21<\/p>\n<p> When I try to give Him good instruction, Your arrogant son gives me bad words<br \/>\nand runs from my courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>Text 22<\/p>\n<p> He is the son of Vraja\\\u2019s king. He should not steal. O Yasod\u00e4, there are some<br \/>\nother things also that, out of respect for you, I have not told.<\/p>\n<p>Text 23<\/p>\n<p>Sri N\u00e4rada said: After hearing Prabh\u00e4vati\\\u2019s words, Yasod\u00e4, the wife of Nanda,<br \/>\nrebuked her son, and with great love gently spoke to Prabh\u00e4vati.<\/p>\n<p>Text 24<\/p>\n<p> Sri Yasod\u00e4 said: I have ten million cows. There is so much yogurt in the house I<br \/>\ncannot move. I do not know why my little boy never drinks any of the yogurt<br \/>\nhere.<\/p>\n<p>Text 25<\/p>\n<p> Bring this yogurt-thief to me. O Prabh\u00e4vati, there is no difference between your<br \/>\nson and my son.<\/p>\n<p>Text 26<\/p>\n<p> You bring that boy here with butter in His mouth and I will give Him a lesson. I<br \/>\nwill scold Him and tie Him up.<\/p>\n<p>Text 27<\/p>\n<p>Sri N\u00e4rada Muni  said: Hearing these words, the gopi became happy and went home.<br \/>\nThen one day Krsna went to her home to steal yogurt.<\/p>\n<p>Text 28<\/p>\n<p> Grasping it with one hand after another, Krsna and His boy friends gradually<br \/>\nscaled the outer wall and entered the courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>Text 29<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the yogurt was in a jug hanging on ropes beyond His hand\\\u2019s reach, by<br \/>\narranging a footstool, a grinding mortar, and the gopa boys, Lord Hari climbed up to<br \/>\nit.<\/p>\n<p>Text 30<\/p>\n<p>  When even from that height the yogurt-jar hanging from ropes could not be<br \/>\nreached, Sridama and Subala hit the jar with sticks.<\/p>\n<p>Text 31<\/p>\n<p> As all the beautiful yogurt flowed from the broken jug to the ground, Krsna,<br \/>\nSubala, the boys, and some monkeys, all ate it.<\/p>\n<p>Text 32<\/p>\n<p> Hearing the sound of the jug breaking, the gopi Prabh\u00e4vati came. As the boys<br \/>\nfled, she grabbed Lord Hari\\\u2019s beautiful hand.<\/p>\n<p>note; Krsna is allowing Prabhavati to catch him <\/p>\n<p>Text 33<\/p>\n<p>As frightened Krsna shed false tears, she brought Him to Nanda\\\u2019s palace. Seeing<br \/>\nNanda standing there, she covered Krsna\\\u2019s face with the edge of His garment.<\/p>\n<p>Text 34<\/p>\n<p>  Lord Hari thought, \\\u201dMy mother will hit Me with a stick.\\\u201d The Supreme<br \/>\nPersonality of Godhead, who can do whatever He likes, then manifested the form of<br \/>\nPrabh\u00e4vati\\\u2019s son.<\/p>\n<p>Text 35<\/p>\n<p>Yasod\u00e4 quickly came. The angry gopi said, \\\u201dHe broke a jug and stole all the<br \/>\nyogurt in it.\\\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Text 36<\/p>\n<p>   Seeing Her son, Yasod\u00e4 smiled and said to the gopi, \u201cO gopi, take the edge of<br \/>\nthe garment from His face and tell the mischief He has done.<\/p>\n<p>note:seeing Prabhavatis own son instead of Krsna , Mother Yasoda is getting<br \/>\nangry:<\/p>\n<p>Text 37<\/p>\n<p> \\\u201dWhen it may be said my son has done mischief you may throw Him out of my<br \/>\nhouse. Your son did the theft you say my son did.\\\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Text 38<\/p>\n<p>Ashamed of what people might think, she took the cloth from His face. Seeing her<br \/>\nown son, she was surprised at heart and said:<\/p>\n<p>Text 39<\/p>\n<p>  \\\u201dHow did you come here without walking? I have the treasure of Vraja in my<br \/>\nhand!\\\u201d Saying this, and taking him with her, she left Nanda\\\u2019s palace.<\/p>\n<p>note :Prabhavati Gopi is obviously confused how her own son was there ,when she<br \/>\nhad actually brought Krsna with her.<\/p>\n<p>Text 40<\/p>\n<p>Yasod\u00e4, Rohini, Nanda, Balar\u00e4ma, and the gopas and gopis laughed, saying, \\\u201dToday<br \/>\nwe saw a great injustice in Vraja.\\\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Text 41<\/p>\n<p>On the path outside again becoming Nanda\\\u2019s son, the Supreme Personality of<br \/>\nGodhead, smiling, confident, and His eyes restless, spoke to the gopi<br \/>\nPrabh\u00e4vati.<\/p>\n<p>Text 42<\/p>\n<p> The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O gopi, if you capture Me again, I will<br \/>\ntake the form of your husband. There is no doubt of it.<\/p>\n<p>Text 43<\/p>\n<p>O king of Mithil\u00e4, when she heard this, the astonished gopi went home.
