L. Sethiji, one of Srila Prabhupada’s beloved servants departed from this material world on 16 February 2009. He was 88 years old.

Sethiji was a building contractor and one of the first persons in Mumbai who came forward to assist Srila Prabhupada in his mission to acquire Hare Krishna Land in Juhu and thereafter build a temple.

Sethiji met Srila Prabhupada in 1971 at Aakash Ganga, one of the first places where Srila Prabhupada resided with his disciples after returning to India from USA, and realized that he had met a great personality. He became a life-member and a staunch and loyal servant of Srila Prabhupada. When the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and people who opposed Srila Prabhupada’s mission tried to destroy his attempts to build a temple for Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari, Sethiji stood as a main soldier to protect the construction of the temple and the devotees.

Later when after much struggle Srila Prabhupada acquired Hare Krishna Land at Juhu, he requested Sethiji to build some room for the devotees. Srila Prabhupada mentioned to him “Just as you are building rooms for the devotees, Krishna is building room for you in Goloka dhama.”

Sethji would unfailingly attend Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasa Puja celebration at Hare Krishna Land, Juhu. Whenever he spoke about Prabhupada, he shed tears of love for him. He continued to engage all his assets and his family members in Srila Prabhupada’s mission throughout his life. His greatest joy was to invite devotees to him house and serve them.

During his last days, Sethiji uttered only the words: “Radha Krishna!” and “Srila Prabhupada!” All other communication had stopped.

On 15 February, Brajhari prabhu, President – ISKCON Juhu visited his home. Sethiji was in an almost unconscious state and didn’t speak or move. Braj Hari prabhu along with his family members decided to arrange for him to take darshan of the Deities at ISKCON Juhu. Amidst kirtan Sethiji was taken on a stretcher for darshan of Srila Prabhupada, Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari and Sri Sri Sita Rama Laxman Hanuman. When he faced Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari, he lifted his hands and clapped.

His last words to his family were what Srila Prabhupada had told him: In a few days his room in Goloka Dham will be ready. Finally when it became evident that Sethiji was reaching the end of his stay in this material world, the devotees of Sri Sri Radha Rasabihariji temple assembled in his house and performed twenty-four hour sankirtan. It was in the presence of all the devotees, singing sweet kirtana that Sethiji peacefully left this world, having completed all his duties.

P L Sethiji is survived by five sons and one daughter. Reflecting his personality all his family members, including grandchildren, are ever enthusiastic to serve Srila Prabhupada and the devotees.

Parijata devi dasi – ISKCON Communications: Sethiji met Srila Prabhupada in 1971 at Aakash Ganga, one of the first places where Srila Prabhupada resided with his disciples after returning to India from USA, and realized that he had met a great personality.
