Around eight hundred enthusiastic devotees gathered from all over Bangladesh for the second annual Hare Krishna convention held in the beautiful and peaceful rural setting of the holy Dhama of Rupa Sanatan Smrithi Tirtha in the district of Jessore. HH Bhakti Purusottama Swami was the host of the event, and as special guests we welcomed HH Bhakti Bringha Govinda Maharaja, HH Bhakti Vinoda Maharaja and HG Devamrta Prabhu, who will be accepting the renounced order on the
\n24th of March.<\/p>\n

This year the event was named ‘The Festival of Humility’, in order to help us cultivate this most beautiful jewel-like decoration of a Vaisnava – the quality of humility. During the opening we set the theme by remembering the definition of humility which Srila Prabhupada is giving in BG 13.8-12: “Humility means that one should not be anxious to have the satisfaction of being honoured by others.” And in the NOD Prabhupada further states: “Anyone who has any desire or aspiration for satisfying his senses by becoming more and more important, either in the material sense or in the spiritual sense, cannot actually relish the really sweet taste of devotional service.”<\/p>\n

For three days devotees were absorbed in sravanam kirtanam, attending various seminars throughout the day which were connecting to the theme of humility. And during the evenings HH BB Govinda Maharaja and his three musicians were leading us in melodious kirtans, deepening our meditation on the Holy Name through slow and repeated chanting of the same sweet melodies. Various Bengali musicians joined the kirtan party with their instruments, and the saxophone highlighted the kirtan with it’s skillful solo’s. Devotees were charmed and happily joined into the chanting and dancing with blissful smiles in their faces.<\/p>\n

The fourth day was dedicated to Bhakti Vrksa and Nama Hatta preaching, and HH Bhakti Purusottama Swami and various senior devotees from Mayapur were inspiring the devotees in their preaching activities. And during the following two days our preachers of ISKCON Youth Forum (IYF) sceduled the first annual Youth Festival: around two hundred students who have started to practice Krsna consciousness regularly came together in order to absorb themselves in sravanam throughout the day, and in the evenings they relished BB Govinda Swami’s ecstatic kirtans. Especially for these students such festivals have a very bonding and uplifting effect, since such joyful events fill the mind with transcendental experiences and strengthen the determination for spiritual practice.<\/p>\n

Since this was BB Govinda Maharaja’s first visit to Bangladesh he took the opportunity to visit in a small group of devotees the nearby holy place of Benapole where Haridas Thakur converted the prostitute.<\/p>\n

As last year the entire convention was an unforgettable experience, deepening our taste and attachement for hearing about Krsna’s pastimes and instructions and chanting His Holy Names, in the association of wonderful devotees.<\/p>\n

And we are already planning for the next year’s event…..<\/p>\n
